My favorite fishing technique is probably either crank bait or top water. After fishing something fast it becomes so hard for me to slow things down and use something like a dropshot/texas rig worm. Thus, I get super impatient that I can't cover a whole lot of water in a short amount of time. I suppose if you want to catch fish you gotta do what you gotta do and give em what they want right?
Most favorite: Jig or t-rigged plastic.
Least favorite: Crankbait or topwater (aversion to treble hooks).
HA!!!!!
Swimbait
Carolina Rig
Roger
My favorite technique is what ever I brought with me, expect to catch fish with & actually do.
My least favorite technique is when the above technique does not produce.
So it changes for me - quite a bit.
A-Jay
Most Favorite - Jig, it produces bigger fish for me.
Least Favorite - Jig, detecting strikes can be a pain. We're told to swing if you feel anything different. If I did that I'd set the hook about 10 times per cast on every rock or tree I hit.

Good summation.
You might consider trying a weedless swimbait fished on top of your favorite jig coverts.
Bass often hook themselves on swimbaits, and if there's any difference in mean size it might be upward
Roger
I hate soft plastics and jigs.
I like spinnerbaits n´cranks.
Least productive but immensely fun are top waters.
Least favorite= Junk fishing
If I have 2-3 rods on my deck it was a great day fishing, when I have 6 or more it is not a good day at all.
Favorite changes with time of year, but for year round I guess a big plastic worm texas rigged.
Fav: Topwater Frogs (not my best technique, but the most fun I can have with my clothes on when it's working). Followed by all topwaters and wacky rig. I enjoy the techniques where you don't have to crank on the reel as much due to shoulder issues and using a kayak to fish from.
Least Fav: Well, dropshot, I won't even try. Jigs (I just use T-rigs instead). I don't think I want to spend all day deep cranking anymore.
Fav: Finesse Swimbait
Least: Crankbait ... can't seem to get them working for me.
Favorite is spinner bait buzz bait combo depending on water temp.
Least favorite is drop shotting although it does work and can produce pigs.
My absolute favorite way to catch fish is on a buzzbait.
I really don't have a least favorite. I don't care for cranking, but it produces sometimes and I've caught some good fish on crankbaits. Honestly, I'll throw whatever I need to. I caught my PB dragging a bait like a Carolina rig .
It changes for me periodically, but the hollow body frog is definitely at the top of the list most of the time.
I guess if I had to pick a least favorite, it would be the Carolina rig solely to the fact I never use it.
Favorite: Tie between Jig and a Bladed Jig]
Least Favorite: Punching, to me its boring and tiring

Punching= tiring from catching pigs all day!!! Lol
Most: fly fishing with a popper, 1-2ft water, around fallen shoreline timber.
Least: deep water casting plastics in the weeds.
Favorite is lipless/any jig type
Least fovorite(if theres such a thing) would probably be throwing deep cranks, only because its some work lol!
Favorite- Top-water, flipping... power fishing
Least favorite- C-Rig... If you see I'm throwing a C-rig, I've given up on life....
Favorite: texas-rigged soft plastic
Least favorite: Carolina-rig soft plastic. (the Alabama rig gets honorable mention).
Favorite- Lipless Crank
Least Favorite- Jig (Cant catch a thing on them)

Biggest punching fish I've gotten was barely 2.5lbs. I'm terrible at finding big fish in the thick stuff lol. I just get exhausted catching a 1lb bass and 12lbs of weeds lol.
Favorite by far is a topwater lure in open water, such as a popper or spook-type.
Least favorite: spinnerbaits. Never ever ever ever have even had so much as a strike from a bass. Great pike bait though lol.

Punching is something I want to try. There are mats of lilies in my bud's pond. I've used the frog there, but never tried to punch.
Favorite: Whatever catches bass.
Least Favorite: Whatever doesn't catch bass
Favorite way to fish is buzzbaiting.
Least is finesse fishing . I dont like to throw tiny baits .
Texas Rig
Drop Shot :'(
I enjoy top water -hollow body frogs, and pitching to shallow water cover.

Least fav. What he said^^^.
Favorites are jigs, swimbaits, big worms, anything top water, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and structure spoons.
Least favorite and most productive for numbers are drop shot, slip shot and nail weight worms. Only fish finesse when the bite is off, that is about 1/2 the day time during the summer period.
Tom
PS, should trolling any lure for any fish to the dislike list, except it's a very effective technique and teaching tool.

I need to try that. I've got a few cheap Storms with the exposed hook but they hang too much. What brand do you like? To the OP...not trying to hijack .

I use a T-rigged "Gambler Big EZ", but flank-rig the bait to increase the hook gap, and BURY the hook-point (no Texskinning)
To keep the bait running high (just inches below the surface), I use a small 3/16 oz bullet sinker with a punch stop.
You want a lead or steel 3/16 oz sinker, because tungsten has a smaller diameter which means a smaller weed-shield.
Rigged in this manner you'll be able to sled thru the heaviest spatterdock (bonnets). The more it bounces around the better,
the same as a crankbait deflecting off cover. Bass really slam swimbaits, and it still gives me gooseskin
when they blast it next to the boat
Good Luck

What do you mean when you say, "finesse swimbait"?
Favorite:Power Fishing, all types. Squarebills, Spinnerbaits, Walking Baits. Anything I can cover considerable water with, and catch good numbers and size where I fish.
Least: Carolina Rig. To me its unwieldy, slow, and I have a hard time knowing what's going on beyond the weight.
Most: I can have a good day throwing topwater within an hour of sunrise/sunset and a jig the rest of the day.
Least: I don't know...I really try not to get to prejudiced against any method, because I never know when I'll have to resort to it; and when I do, I know that any presentation will only work for me if I have some confidence to throw it correctly..... -- but, generally, flukes and dropshot mean that I'm starting to feel desperate. I've had good days with them and I hesitate to say that I dislike them...its just that when they come out, it means I've been struggling.

Sounds like Carolina rigs aren't on your favorites list either from another post you've made. Lol. Me as well.

I know how effective this technique is. I have two boxes LC Sammy and Gunfish.
I tried top water several times, but I didn't have any luck with it.
I always push myself to learn it, but delay it for next time. Maybe it's because I do well with t-rig and jig.

This weekend, I'm taking all that I learned from that other post and I'm going to slaughter them with a deep c-rig....
And, to be honest, I've done OK with lightweight c-rig on spinning gear up to about 12 FOW....I do have trouble casting one, but I won't deny it can be effective
Favorite...jerkbait. ( jig and top water get honorable mentions)
Least...senkos...hate em...if i have a senko tied on i am very very desperate and most likely agitated lol
ive owned the same pack of senkos for over 8 years now lol

Lol, I didn't mean to reply above and the post here made no sense. I think made two posts on my phone from my pocket.
Favorite technique- Topwaters and Shallow cranks- Admit it, it's just fun when you can cover water quickly, you can float free of snags, and the fish hook themselves, or you have big blowups on the surface. I like to challenge myself, but I love those days when they just hammer anything that moves.
Least Favorite-- Lipless Crankbaits-- Why do these work so well for everyone else? All I catch are weeds and logs.
Close 2nd (LF)-- Carolina Rigs and Drop-Shot-- I had little use for these when I was fishing 5 acre lakes and ponds from the bank, but now that I have a boat and fish bigger waters, I'm having to learn some new techniques. I'm sure I'll appreciate them when I start catching pigs, but for now it's mostly awkward casts and lost rigs.
Favorite- froggin. Buzz baits ( basically anything top water) and t-rigs
Least favorite- jigs, spinnerbaits, and swim baits ( as I am yet to catch anything but trees using these) ha
Fav-Poppers, walking baits, and frogs. If you don't love topwater explosions, there's something very wrong with you.
Least favorite- dragging plastics deep (t-rigged, c-rigged, drop shot). I'd rather stay home.
My favorite method is fishing a Zara Spook in thin woody water on Table Rock lake, then switching to a Senko as the sun gets up.
My least favorite is power crank bait fishing.
My favorite method is fishing a Zara Spook in thin woody water on Table Rock lake, then switching to a Senko as the sun gets up.

Favorite - texas rigs
Hate - bottom jigs
From favorite to least favorite (in terms of what is productive for me in most situations)
Favorite = jigs in shallowish water
Least Favorite = jigs in deep water
not sure why, but these feel like 2 different types of fishing altogether for me. i also love some topwater, but it is far from my most productive way of fishing....
Favorite by far is a Texas Rigged worm. The hits are always fantastic and I've caught my biggest fish on this. When they won't hit anything else, they'll hit a worm.
Least favorite would have to be dive baits...end up catching either hybrids/stripers or just a lot of sticks...
Favorites: jigs, texas, and A frame spinner baits.
Least favorite: drop shot. It reminds me of junk fishing, but I'll do what it takes to win.
Favorite: Frog
Least favorite: C-rig.
Fav: Wacky Rig
Least Fav: Jerk baits
Favorite: pitching a Texas rig
Least favorite: jerkbaits
I know the A-rig gets a lot of hate on here, but if you are catching them on jerkbaits I'll be wearing them out on that stupid contraption
Favorite: pitching a jig or t-rig
Least favorite: I've never had much success on swimbaits, so probably that.
Most: Any plastic bait on a texas rig.
Least: Buzzbaits. I don't think I've ever caught a fish on a buzzbait. I'm even throwing them more than usual this year, having just bought a couple Cavitrons on the strength of recommendations by folks here. They're nice... but still, nothin'. Can't get a strike. I must be doing something wrong.

Use them around any cover or weed lines you can find. Work them as slow as possible with the blades still keepingn it on top of the water. Stick with white or white/chartreuse during the day. Black in low light conditions. Next time your driving around take your buzz bait and hold out of your vehicles window to make the blades spin. This causes some wear in them that could take hours and hours to achieve a squeal. For me they always seem to attract more fish once they have that squeal. Hope this helps. For me they are one of my favorite most productive baits I use.

What do you do with jerkbaits that have 3 trebles on them? Do you have to take one off to be able to use them?

The rule is no more than two rods with two hooks. Which means you can't have more than two rods in the water with more than two hooks on each rod at one time. But from what a DNR officer told me when I asked him about it was that lures like a jerkbait are technically one bait however an A-rig has several baits.
A lot of Illinois laws are vague and confusing. And thats from someone who lived in California....

I'm sure it done purposely. Make it as vague as they can so if they wanna screw with you they have the ability.
Favorite is a t-rig or a jig worked on the bottom.
Least favorite is a C-rig.
Most favorite: frogs
Least favorite: deep cranking, although it's productive and I do it often, it's not a lazy man's way of fishing, therefore... I hate it.
Favorite right now is anything I can throw/retrieve on my new glass crank rod, least favorite is jig fishing.

The new Alabama Rig is sweeping the nation, raising questions by anglers regarding its legality. The lure, which has five trailing wires to which five lures can be attached, appears to be a school of fish swimming through the water, making it attractive to bass.
The IDNR legal staff, working with the Divisions of Fisheries and Law Enforcement, has determined that the Alabama Rig IS legal in those waters in the state that do NOT have the "2 poles only with no more than 2 hooks or lures per pole" regulation.
Examples of those lakes where the Alabama Rig is legal are:
• Corps of Engineer lakes (Carlyle, Rend and Shelbyville)
• Lake of Egypt and Kinkaid Lake.
The Alabama Rig is also legal on most rivers and streams, including the Mississippi River between Illinois and Missouri, but NOT between Illinois and Iowa. It is also legal on the Ohio River, including Smithland pool. In addition, the Rig is legal on all private waters in the state."

I understand the regulations and what lakes allow the A-rig I was not sure if you were fishing lakes with the 2 rod 2 hook rule and was wondering how you had it rigged with only two hooks because I fish some lakes that an A-rig would kill in but I have yet to find an effective way to rig it with only 2 hooks
On 7/10/2015 at 7:20 AM, Jon G said:I understand the regulations and what lakes allow the A-rig I was not sure if you were fishing lakes with the 2 rod 2 hook rule and was wondering how you had it rigged with only two hooks because I fish some lakes that an A-rig would kill in but I have yet to find an effective way to rig it with only 2 hooks
A 5-arm rig with a spinner blade on one arm and smaller 3" hookless swimbaits on the top 2 arms still has a nice bait ball look to it, and has been fairly successful for me. I always feel like I might be missing some fish that hit the teasers, but it still catches fish. In 3 hook states like Tennessee I usually go 3 baits and 2 teasers, and have had great success with that rig.
My favorite is finessing a weightless soft plastic in clear water with a reaction color. Watching those strikes can be just as exciting as topwater.
I don't really have a least favorite other then live bait. As long as I can fish it, even if it means dead sticking a bait, I find it all rewarding (When it works).
Topwater is my favorite, drop shotting my least favorite.
Weightless plastics and small crankbaits/spinners are my favorite, big lures and heavy rods are my least favorite.
Favorites;
Weightless T-rig senkos, topwaters, prespawn jerkbaits
Least favorites;
Bed fishing
Punching, or fishing in heavy weeds
Deep water.
I like to fish crankbaits and top water as well. Guess I don't have a least favorite. Every lure and bait has there moment...
In love with frogging, can't stand texas rigs and weightless senkos. I know they can be deadly techniques but I just find them incredibly boring. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
Favorites drop shot and jig
Least favorite spinner bait and Carolina rig
Of course I love top water but I'd say my favorite is the fluke on a weightless hook, weighted hook or scrounger head. I just love the thing. Least favorite is drop shot and Carolina.
favorite: Frogs
least favorite: C-rig.
There are definitely baits i enjoy fishing more but that is because they catch fish in an exciting way. Topwater comes to mind specifically. There are not really any techniques I hate but there are some I don't have confidence in or just don't use that often. Drop shot comes to mind of me. I know it produces well but i haven't really used it that much.
^ This.
Favorite: Jigs, yeah definitely Jigs.
I don't think I have a least favorite. I've caught fish on pretty much all the baits I own. I never really tried a Carolina rig though

I would say that this is pretty spot on. I do like to fish moving baits though. I have trouble putting confidence in a Carolina Rig. I know that they catch fish, but it's more I just don't have confidence in my ability to fish a Carolina Rig effectively and catch bass on it.
Favorite: Swimbaits, (NOT your little 4-5" hollow-bellies)

Aren't C-Rigs and Shaky Heads kinda slow and methodical? Just trying to understand what you mean by Anything else slow'
Lately my favorite has been cranking, specifically the Rapala DT-4. It's been producing for me in my club tournaments. I would say frog fishing is my least favorite because of the terrible hookup ratio.
On 7/17/2015 at 9:35 AM, HoosierHawgs said:Aren't C-Rigs and Shaky Heads kinda slow and methodical? Just trying to understand what you mean by Anything else slow'
I fish C-rigs with a bigger weight than most and I guess faster than some with a constant drag across the bottom maintaining contact. Shaky heads aren't that slow if you have a heavy one, hopping it along the bottom. A weightless senco takes.......so......long to sink.
Favorite: Swing impact as a swimbait or on a swimjig. I want to catch fish shallow in cover.
Least Favorite: Drop Shot. It lost its luster after the 10,000th fish I caught on a drop shot. Sad thing about it is that I usually run three drop shot setups and use all three just about every time I go out. Despite my eagerness to avoid it flat out catches fish day in and day out around here of all shapes and sizes.
Favorite:jig
Least:drop shot
Favorite- topwater. Least favorite-Ball and chain!
Dude, I love every technique. I have almost as much fun putting rigs together and customizing cranks and I do actually using them. A big part of the allure of angling for me is the deception involved in getting a bite and seeing just what will be deceiving enough, which rig to fish and how to fish it. It just depends on the situation. And I can tell you that if a certain technique catches bass, it will be my favorite until it doesn't.
However, if I had to answer...
Favorite: Jigs
Least favorite: Buzzbaits
Love punching matts, flipping grass, frogging, walking top water, poppers, jigs, senkos, shallow crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits... least favorite is drop shotting and buzz baits ...
Most favorite: Trap bite in late fall and late winter/ early spring. I also enjoy fishing jigs of all kinds, big Texas rigged plastics and also enjoy deep cranking.
Least favorite: anything finesse, don't have the patience to do it!
My favorite is the wacky rig. I feel like all year long I catch fish.second favorite is top water. It's so much fun. Then come flipping, pitching, and punching...... Pigs
My least favorite is deep cranking. I'm not very good at it yet so I don't catch as many fish usually my partner gets the school turned on then I catch them on a football head jig
I love Senko fishing weightless.... always works. caught my PB's on them.
I hate Senko fishing weightless.... caught my smallest on them too and its freakin boring
Favorite: flipping and pitching (jigs, T-rigs)
Least Favorite: spinnerbait
i cant stand just reeling something in, i like to feel and work the bait
Top water or flipping docks.
Least favorite is worm fishing
My favorite is a tie between dropshotting and jigs..
My least favorite is crankbaits, although I keep buying more of them for some reason..
Favorite-frogs/rats (explosive strikes) Least favorite-frogs/rats (low hookup ratio)
Not much love here for the c-rig or dropshot. I'd have to agree. If I'm using either of those, I've been having a bad day catching. But, I really despise trolling. If I had to troll to catch fish, I'd just a soon stay home.
Fav would be plastics of any kind, as long as it's not a dropshot or c-rig.
