Ok, here is how we do this...There are 3 divisions..
Division 1 - California VS StickMarsh Farm 13
Division 2 - Florida (minus the Farm) Vs Al, GA, SC, MS, LA, TX
Division 3 - Everyone Else VS Everyone Else
These Divisions were made in an attempt to make the playing field as even as possible (you poor frozen saps up north don't have to compete with the Farm, ect..)
March 1st to April 15th - Largest documented fish (photos and weighed) in each division wins. Any questionable photos to be verified by a moderator.
Entry fee - you have to declare your intention to compete on or before Feb 28 on this topic including the division you intend to compete in, and post your best Avid look a like photo..(Ray Charles glasses or shadowy self portrait or just plain fuzzy pic) I will post the "official list of competitiors on March 1st or whenever I can get around to it.
Prizes - 1st place in each Division will receive a bag of handpoured soft plastics by Family Secret Bait Co. (josh and taylors) These baits are still in R@D so there is no telling what you might get. But wait, there's more - You will also receive the admiration of the entire BR family (not really) But wait, Yes there is more. Ok, we will come up with something else by then, maybe even something of real value.
If Georgia's in it then we will bring in our ringer Randall with the backup ringer Doghouse both fishing on Lake Varner. ;D
I'm in. D-2
im callin WV out, you readin this Aaron lol ;D
I'm in D-1. WHen I was playing ball in high school, I always wanted to go Division I, bout time!
Man the guys in Canada don't stand a chance against those in Mexico. :
im in D-3 :-/ lol
CJ, not sure if Canada and Mexico are included, the title of this was "state VS state" maybe FishinDaddy will make an international division.
see, my dad takes my fishin photos, and he would think i was stoopit if i tried to take an Avid photo lol!
Does Puerto Rico count?
Count me in i guess D-2 right here representing the Ga. boys.
Representing Florida here. Just bring it.
In an effort not to be exclusionary, the State vs State rules are hereby modified.
Division 4 - Who ever is left that wants to play (not in the 50 states.) Special exemption to our Canadian flappy headed brothern. Any species you can drag through a hole in the ice no greater than nine inches with a rod no longer than 3 ft.
************Tournament Directors Note*************
No Avid picture, No entry, Period.
Artificial bait only.
****Special rules for D-1*****
Avid cannot use Stevep's fish
Stevep cannot use fish caught on Mondays
George can ONLY use fish caught while fishing with his son
Fourbizz cannot enter until his blood pressure drops below 150/110
dang the artificial only just killed my chances of winning well i can try a swimbait
I'm IN D-1. No pictures to post, BUT with the great bass lakes in the area, WHY not give it a shot:o) Another reason to justify to the wifey why I NEED to FISH:o) Hey, what happens IF I catch a monster THIS coming weekend??
There should be a smallmouth and largemouth division too.
I'll play.
D2 as primary
D1 also, cuz SteveP will host me out there from time to time.
Of course I'm in. Div. 2. Them other states can't be serious about going up against us FLORIDA boys...That's just plain
Quoteim callin WV out, you readin this Aaron lol ;D
Aaron might not be but I am. I feel a strong 8+ coming in about 2-3 weeks. 8-)
5 beers later. I'm at about 110/90. All is well. If I am only going up against part of avid, I like my chances ;D ;D
SteveP and GW have been disqualified on the grounds of......something
QuoteDoes Puerto Rico count? Is PR a state in your atlas?
If Georgia gets Randall & Doghouse both fishing on Lake Varner, then Texas gets Tom Redington
QuoteIf Georgia gets Randall & Doghouse both fishing on Lake Varner, then Texas gets Tom Redington
Ok, then I get Muddy on our team.....oh, wait, that doesnt soudn like such a good deal.... :-[
Just kiddin Mud
I think the fairest way to do a state vs state contest is not by largest fish. Rather, the fish that by percentage comes closest to the state record of the state in which it was caught.
I'm in for Ky.
It will be fun to see the results.
You Florida boys better not count you little chicky's before they hatch.Georgia boys around here are pretty solid.

That's a good idea.
ok, at the suggestion of "he who shall remain nameless" there will also be a smallmouth catagory in all four divisions.
As for the percentage of state records.
No, absolutely not, way to much math involved. This is not a calculus class. It is a friendly fishing contest where wining states will gloat and become generally intolerable to everyone else on this site. Gloating will only be allowed until the end of April......
keep the suggestions coming, final rules will be consolidated and posted with the list of entrants on or about Mar 1.
What about those of us who are already generally intolerable? ;D
If it requires another entry to be in the smallmouth competetion, then I am in as well. At this point I have already won that one, unless SteveP can find a monster smallie in the Stick Marsh, LOL!
Hey..
It's probably answered but I didn't read all three pages..
How are the guys from the North handicapped (other than we live in the North Ha! Ha!)

I almost forgot.
Percentage of state record is the only way for this to even being CLOSE to something relatively fair.
Glenn- would it be tough to make a calculator for this? (Plug in "weight", then "state" = percentage)
If we can get it done this way, I'm in. Every division, I'll be travelling alot this year

run your fun little contest any way you see fit...if you try to take all the well meaning suggestions this will turn into a major project.

Personally I think this stuff is alot of fun and I would enter any and every contest on the board.
I suppose I will jump into the race and declare Iowa is in the competition. Hopefully the ice is gone by April 15th :
I'm with LBH. Great idea, let's just keep it as fair as possible. HUGE bragging rights up for grabs here!!!!

I hear that. I can bet Ice out on some of the northern lakes could be later than 4/15. Count me in for Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, as I fish all 3 states. This pic is from 4/22 last year.
Unless you take LBHs advice and create some kind of a handicap, you have pretty much excluded all of us in the Northeastern USA. There are only 4 states in the country that have a smaller state record than where I live and they are all in the NE. JMHO

The more forethought, the better the chance for longevity
Actually I gave this quite a lot of forethought. But if you guys want to go head to head with Fl, fine. FYI the Fl state record is only 17.27 lbs and the farm is producing 10 -12 lbers every day with Kissimmee, Toho and Harris about to start doing the same thing. So if you think yall can get within 75% of your respective state records, then it's on.
Only 2 Divisions - Artificial Bait only
Largemouth Division - % of state record
Smallmouth Division - % of state record
May the best state win
Ours is 10.6 and my pb is 9.2,....it's all relevant.
I wasn't trying to bully in on anything, just offering my advice after having started and completed many campaigns of this type of nature here. I'm always sure I thought of everything till I run it by the other mods and sure enough, their suggestions usually make it one step better.
Just trying to help.
There was a thread on your pb vs your state record within the last yr. I think that you'll find that 75% is common for a few guys here with quite a few surpassing it. (hopefully , I'll be one of them,l )
On your mark,.....get set,......FISH!!!
(yes, the frozen in crew will give the southerner's a head start..... ;D)

you said EXACTLY what i was thinking. Its the only fair way to do it. If we do it like that them im in.
Also, is private waters in?
OK, with the new rules. I'm in. LOL Here's my entry fee.........
Representing NJ and maybe NY. I edited this post to declare that I am competing in the LARGEMOUTH division according to the revised rules.
Ronnie
LBH - I have no doubt that there are many guys here who can get 75% of their states record, but can you expect to do that in March? I had it set so that the gulf coast states were going against each other trying to give the northern guys, who have not seen liquid water for some time, a chance.
Any way, the formula should be something like the following example:
fish weight = 10.5 lbs (my pb)
state record Fl = 17.27 lbs
FW / SR x 100 = your score
10.5/17.27x100 = 60.80 rounded to 2 decimals
What do you think of that?
and btw, you have not posted your complete entry fee.
I revoke my entry due to all of the lame backseat driving.
Geez, sorry,....just trying to help. knock yourself out, I'm out of it.

This is why I avoid all competition when fishing. I fish to get away from all the stress and toils that life brings.
Slowly I'm starting to feel the same way Mudster. I figured all the drama and complaining would be in the WBT. :
Muddy, can I have some of your popcorn?
QuoteThis is why I avoid all competition when fishing. I fish to get away from all the strss and toils that life brings.
You know I'm starting to see why you feel this way, Muddy. I feel the same regarding fishing. It is my way to unwind. Initially, this contest really didn't sound stressful to me. You know what I mean. I go out and catch whatever I catch and don't worry about it. If the fish is big enough to put me in contention, fair enough. If not, so what. It's really no skin off my nose. It's just fun to fish and if I catch a nice hawg, that would be fun to post whether it wins or not.
PDBs original suggestion that LBH has followed up is a great way to run the contest. It is objective and fair. Let's do it and have some fun. Who cares who wins as long as it is fair?
I can fish competitively with friends and still relax
I see no stress. I am gona fish just like normal and report back on April 15 what my biggest catch was. You guys can do what you want with the rules.
My point was is that the dude was trying to put something together. He had already figured out how HE wanted to do it. Nowhere did he ask for suggestions. I don't understand why people think that it should be one great big democracy sometimes. It was his competetion, he should be allowed to run it as he saw fit.
I mean you can't spend 30 minutes giving the clerk at the gas station suggestions on what the rules are for the Lotto. Play or don't.

Would it make any sense to pit a heavyweight boxer against a featherweight?

how about this fellow Lee, better known as Fishin Daddy.

Great to have the rules clarified. My avatar qualifies as an Avid look-alike, although I am so much better looking. I'm live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I will be fishing Caney Creek Reservoir in Louisiana the first weekend in March; Lake Fork, Texas the second weekend: Guntersville. Alabama the third weekend: and Grand Lake, Oklahoma the first weekend in April.
So, if I catch a LM in Texas, can I compare it against the Oklahoma state record?
No, no and no....
State record of the state in which the fish was actually caught.
and if you have to clarify that you are better looking that Avid, well.....
What if I declare my boat to be part of VA proper and line the deck with VA dirt, then go to Bammer and haul in a pig?
I'm gonna be saying it was caught in VA.
Well, er, Burley, this is just a friendly competition. I was just trying to clarify the rules. As you well know, once the rules are established, bass fishermen never cheat or lie.
If you ain't chea...er, fishin, you ain't tryin.

oh and in the rare case that someone BREAKS their state record, what happens? do they get a special prize?
QuoteSo what happens if you can't enter??? I'll still be looking at ice in most places March 1st
It was Lee's iniative that kicked off the BR Shootout, so Lee calls the shots.
All the same, I have a suggestion in the interest of fairness that might beef-up the participation.
It would be nice if everyone could get a piece of the best month for big fish in their region.
For example, the best month in Florida is arguably "March",
but in Rhode Island's I'm sure the best month is no earlier than "May".
It might be fairer if the fish-off ran from say March 15 to May 15.
That way we'd all get a piece of the best action without centering on any one region. Waddaya think?
Roger
Quoteoh and in the rare case that someone BREAKS their state record, what happens? do they get a special prize?
If they are registered with the IGFA, they get the record,....that's not enough???
Doesn't matter up here anyway, we can't play.
NEVER live your life by the "What ifs??" You'll waste a ton of time thinking but never doing. Go out and do!!!!!
If we here in the North/Northeast can enter and play we will. If not, will follow you guys on the forum and revel in your successes!!!!
Fish on!!!!

Here's my best Avid submission photo, fish cut in half and all.
Mark me down for the largemouth competition. It's on!!!!
I would agree, Roger. I'm thinking Mar 1 through May 15 gives most of the northern guys a chance to play and lets us southern boys play before the water temp hits 90. And as LBH said earlier, forethought leads to longevity. This is something that is beginning to look repeatable.
