Yep it's that time of year again.
2008 I started a contest for the largest bass relative to your State record and it's that time of year again. We are starting early April and going to run through the middle of June.
So if you guys are ready then let's get signed up.
If you want to play, then all you have to do is declare your intention to participate in the "get your but kicked by Dwight," tournament. If you play, you will find out who he is and how bad you suck.
This contest will run from daylight on April 5th through dark on June 15th.
Anyone who has posted to this thread by midnight on April 4th is eligible to play.
Prizes to be determined at a later date.
RULES
1. This is for FUN...
2. There are 3 classes this year. Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Spotted. You must have submitted your entry prior to midnight April 4, 2014.
3. This contest runs from daybreak on April 5th, 2014 to sunset on June 15, 2014.
4. Artificial bait ONLY. If you are sight fishing, the fish must be hooked inside the mouth. All fish must be caught in PUBLIC fishing areas. No private stocked ponds (ie you own the pond and are raising trophies).
5. Scoring of the fish shall be completed as follows:
Example
FW = fish weight = 10.5 lbs
SR = state record Fl = 17.27 lbs
FW / SR x 100 = your score
10.5/17.27x100 = 60.80 rounded to 2 decimals
In order for your fish to count, you must submit a picture, the state record weight for the state the fish was caught in, and an accurate weight of the fish. You can submit fish caught in different States but only your highest score counts. Your fish must be submitted within one week of being caught. (No sandbagging) You may submit as many fish as you want as long as subsequently caught fish score higher. All fish must be submitted before 7 am on June 16th, 2014.
6. You can be disqualified for unsportsmanlike behavior. The definition of "unsportsmanlike" is completely at the discretion of myself and the moderators.
7. Entry Fee - You must post your intention to play on this thread prior to midnight April 14th.
Directors Note-----Have fun, catch fish, and post your results......
Old timer bonus - The first person to post a good "Avid" look alike photo gets 5 bonus points. If you have to ask, you don't qualify for the bonus.

In. But I sure wish it started earlier than April 5th. The Sinaloa state record looms in at 19.10......

Avid is probably my favorite member that I never met. He always kept things interesting. Since you got the reference you get the 5 pt bonus.

When we were living on Lake Walk-in-Water, I was fortunate in meeting Don (avid).
He rode to our house from the Gold Coast, and he & I caught a couple bass on the Walk (miss that boy).
Lee, the next time we're on US-60, I'll drop off that affidavit that you demand.
You know, the one stating that I caught the bass, and not Lois

In as always. Let that old Minnesota magic give me some lovin. It will take a 76ish to be in the top. That's how it has been. Dwight is going down. Even if it takes bribing the moderators to delete his posts of 70 points or better.

Shimmy I thought we were buds. If you can get your PB certified by Lee as a newly caught fish you will win hands down. You will even best Swagkid300.

My camera died so i never could get that picture. And the bystanders happened to forget their camera and scale at home. As i measured it against some rocks i was able to make a mental note of it's size and girth and plugged it onto the online fish calculator and it was around 32 pounds give or take. But, again, i was trying to be conservative on the weight. I know where she is, I'll catch her again this spring. Or how about, she was all spawned out and would have been at least 3 pounds bigger? Or, it was one day before opening season when i caught her so i had to let her go. Lastly, i have caught many in the upper teens lower 20's range and she was easily bigger if not double that size.
On a side note, it would be nice to see somewhere besides northern states have a chance at winning this thing.

Heck yeah I'm in. Spot's are my one chance to not get whipped by Dwight, I dont think spotted bass can live anywhere they dont serve grits with breakfast without actually asking if you want them or not. Gonna have to go find a big Kentucky Bass on the river this spring.
I"ll play

I wouldn't be so skeptical with green fish. I seem to recall finishing within spitting distance of Dwight with a green one, a few years ago. Maybe he was having a bad year, lol.

John, if you don't mind me asking, was that bronzeback from Lake Erie?
Roger
I think that year, my fish was a 7-1 largemouth from a small lake a couple hours away from Erie. It may have also been a 6-8 largemouth from a Finger Lake - can't remember which fish was entered. Both were two of my biggest fish in NY, the past few years. I think Dwight's PA fish were Erie smalliers. My personal best smallie is from Erie, a 5-12, which is a far cry from Dwight's fish.
7-1
5-12
6-8
BEAUTIFUL
I was hoping you'd say Burt Lake (thinking about vacationing there)
Roger
Burt Lake, MI?
On 3/23/2014 at 8:15 AM, J Francho said:Burt Lake, MI?
Yes, in Michigan's uppermost lower peninsula, just south of the Mackinaw Bridge.
Of late, Burt has been producing smallies heavier than Grand Traverse & Sturgeon Bay (rivaling those out of Erie).
Jonathon VanDam has a bronzeback honey-hole in the UP that he refuses to divulge. I'm willing to bet it's Burt Lake.
Roger
JVD would know. You might be right. For big smallies, I have Erie and the eastern mason of Ontario. It's tough with the early season weather though.

Wouldn't that be the 'western' basin?

No, while I live on the southern basin, the biggest concentration and best shot at a big smallmouth from Ontario is the eastern basin.

I'm not playin'! I don't think I have a chance getting anywhere near our state record of 8-15. If I bust 6.5 lbs this year I'll be happy!
RoLo....you miss them nasty north country gators? Really? Slimy, stinkin' bastages! They do provide excitement, I'll give them that but they (and their darn teeth) steal too much of my tackle to hold any credibility with me.
I love northerns. They're my big, stinky, Lucky Craft stealing pets.
Roger, you're close with Conesus on the 6-8. Next door, Canadice. The big 7+ was from a mud puddle in central NY. I don't post about them online. Most have big fish, take your pick and learn them. They aren't easy.

Yes, I do miss them nasty north country gators (not the snot rockets in weedy bays, but 35" up).
When targeting pike & muskies I use titanium wire, so their dentures present no problem.

Canadice,Wow! My next guess would've been Keuka (I blew that one).
We have a couple fishing guides living in our community.
One of them guides in Florida during the winter and guides on Honeoye Lake, NY during the summer.
According to Frank, Honeoye has a lot of bass but is not a good lake for size (nothing like your hippo).

Yes I know Dwight, I've been ogling that picture for years
There's no disputing that Lake Erie is the crowning jewel of world-class bronzebacks.
Oddly enough, Randy's brother Kevin spends a lot of time on Lake St Clair and he also likes Lake Charlevoix
and Lake Leelanau in the upper reaches of Michigan's lower Peninsula. Lately though, Jonathon VanDam
has been the smallmouth force to reckon with, but he refuses to divulge his secret lake in the Traverse City vicinity.
I'm guessing his Lake X is either Burt Lake, MI or Lake Skegemog, MI
Based on the FLW national scoreboard, only Lake Erie prevented Burt Lake from clinching the national smallmouth title.
In the Walmart FLW tourney last year on Burt & Mullet, the winning stringer was 25-14
and the next 23 places all had stringer weights over 20 pounds, where 23rd place weighed 20-10 (That's insane!)

As long as you follow the 7 rules you can use any bait you want unless of course I happen to be in a pissy mood that day and invoke rule #6 in which case you're screwed anyway so go ahead and troll with live bait if you want.
The above sentence structure may only be funny to those who subscribe to Mental Floss or vlogbrothers, which sadly most of you don't.
I thought way back when the rules excluded live bait. Has that changed Lee?

Sorry guys,I guess my sarcasm was not obvious enough. It's been a long day.
If you follow the 7 rules, you cannot, by definition, use live bait. (see rule #4)
So to be clear, who ever CWB is referring to is cheating and should be sacked.

Roger
Let the Florida folks set the bar, then the Northern folk can raise it in a month! At least, that's my plan!
I'm in. Hopefully, the ice is gone by June.
The boat is hooked and ready. Nicole and I are going to Southport in the morning. It's time for a Toho pig to get on the board.
You go, Florida! This is where the Northern guys have a shot. The contest runs right through our pre-spawn fish, where the right person, at the right time, can catch the biggest fish we have to offer for the year. Count on one of my Northern brethren to catch a slobette for the board within the next few weeks. It might just be me!!

Its going to take one heck of a largemouth to beat Dwight. Last year I wasn't able to break 7 lb mark for this contest. Hopefully that will change this year.
You are right about that, Mainebass. It took me my NH PB a couple years ago to beat him. This year, I plan on doing it again.
