fishing alone or with a partner? 2024

fishing user avatarethan-333 reply :

how many of you prefer to fish alone as to with a friend?

i enjoy the company. but i can focus better and fish my way when im alone and seem to have more successful trips

fishing user avatarchubaka reply :

The company is always worth it, but at the same time I don't mind fishing by myself

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Ethan, it depends.

On some bodies of water I love to fish by myself as the environment is beautiful, peaceful and I don't want to give up my favorite places to fish to someone else.

Selfish? Totally.

Now, after penning the above, I don't mind taking others who do not fish tournaments and hit my favorite spots. I know my locations will be protected since the guys I take out will not hit that body of water again until I take them out again, probably next year.

In tournaments, it can work both ways. Two heads are better than one and to have a partner you can discuss strategy and worldly issues is great. And your partner can take you to his favorite spots and those of others he has fished with in other tournaments.

If I get bored while fishing by myself, I have a transistor radio and I listen to ball games or music while fishing.

It boils down to personal preference.

fishing user avatarfishingfan25 reply :

Most of the time i fish with a partner who's generally a close friend maybe 2 or 3 people. I have the confidence that they won't give up my good spots to anyone else. That being said I also enjoy fishing out of my kayak alone very much, theres something about being up at sunrise catching fish with no one else around thats really special

Truer words have never been spoken. I love fishing alone in the morning (or almost any time) watcing the fish rise, watching the birds, and just enjoying the peace and quiet. Having said that I still fish with a buddy most of the time.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

As a shore guy I like to fish alone.  I move around and trying to coordinate with someone can be a distraction.  If it's a place where shore access is limited and you're mostly confined to similar areas, I don't mind.  But yeah, part of why I like to fish is to be out there without the distractions of people or computers or machines or concrete, just me, the muddy ground, the plants, and the water.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

I fish alone most of the time and am fine
with that arrangement. Suits me best as
with kayaking, if I'm with someone we often
go to our own favorite spots and end up
fishing "alone" anyway.

It's all good.

fishing user avatarroothead1 reply :

I like fishing on lakes or my canoe with company, but if I'm wading a creek or river, I like being by myself and work my way upstream at my own pace.

fishing user avatarblongfishing reply :

I love fishing by myself. I somewhat despise fishing with a partner. Unfortunately for me, High School tournaments almost always require a partner. I enjoy the time alone and time to relax.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

I like to bass fish alone or with my son. We have a system. Panfish or walleyes, my dad's in the boat or a buddy.

fishing user avatarKevin22 reply :

I don't like to fish by myself. I have a creek full of smallies 1/4 mile from my house, I can walk down there and fish any time I want to but just don't care to fish alone. Yeah I can concentrate better, but I'd rather have company.

fishing user avatarS. Sass reply :

I fish usually with a partner but don't mind alone some too. From a safety perspective depending on where and how your fishing having a partner can be a great thing.

fishing user avatarDogfish_Jones reply :

I'm 50/50 on this. Tournaments time usually means I've got a partner alone with me. Just fishing week days, I'm usually by myself. Then when my son comes over for a day during the weekend, it's us.

I do concentrate better by myself. But I never mind a person with me, we can usually figure out how to correct all what's wrong in the world by day's end. Problem is we forget what the  solutions were by the time we get back on dry land.

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

Alone.

fishing user avatarPAPADUDE reply :

I'm retired and we fish 4 or 5 days a week and my best fishing partner is the Boss Lady. Very seldom go without her. She has become as good a bass fisherperson as I have ever fished with. You guys that leave your wife home are missing some quality time with them.

I fish alone a good majority of the time.

fishing user avatarDye99 reply :

I fish out of a kayak.

I take my wife sometimes, and I also take a friend out here or there as well, but I find that I prefer to fish by myself for the most part. That way Im not a guide, or a tackle loaner, Im just out there to catch fish...

fishing user avatarward131 reply :

I am usually the only one fishing but am seldom alone. My wife goes out but does not fish.  I do invite friends to go with me but don't get allot of takers....maybe I am "that guy"

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Both have their perks. If I'm trying something new, I like to fish by myself in case I bomb.

Owning a boat and being able to get on the fish pretty consistently makes it really easy to find people to go with you though.

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

I like the company usually, but I catch more fish when I'm by myself.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

While I ain't opposed to fishing alone there is no greater joy than sharing the outdoors with family & friends!

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I prefer to fish alone.  It does me good to get out by myself for a while.

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

I like it either way.The older I get the more I want to make a difference in someone's life.A great way to do this is fishing.I invite different friends over to fish a lot.And family. My son and me fish a lot.

That being said,I probably fish alone more often, cause my boat is 30 feet from my back door in the lake.I can quickly throw a trip together when I have a little window of time.

fishing user avatarOregon Native reply :

I enjoy fishing with others as I get older but it comes with inconveniences such as their time schedule.  (yup...I prefer mine).  As long as the good Lord lets me go I will enjoy both.  Not to many secrets in the South so I just lift up my day ..... leave an I Love You note to the wife and I'm gone.

fishing user avatar"hamma" reply :

I do like fishing with company, teaching them, and sharing the beauty of the great outdoors,..But ,...there definatly peace and solice of fishing alone,...so i guess its 50/50

fishing user avatarfrogflogger reply :

Either way is fine with me as long as I'm fishing - and I never worry about giving spots or techniques away - I've fished for years, some of them in tournaments and some of them as a guide always shared techniques and locations and have never seen that to have any effect on my success or lack thereof.

fishing user avatarHurricane reply :

I am cool with fishing alone... More relaxing and can concentrate better...

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

I'm more than happy to do either. I'm just happy to be on the water!

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

fishing user avatarcrypt reply :

fishing user avatarJT Bagwell reply :

I fish alone the majority of the time.

I usually try to take my kids a couple of times per week after baseball season is over though.

I showed this post to my wife and she's still laughing.  The idea that my princess bride would touch a fish that hasn't been cooked is a hoot and a half.   I do admire you though brother.  It's great to have that kind of bond with the mrs.

fishing user avatarNitrofreak reply :

It really doesn't matter but, I do enjoy my time alone, none of my girls like to get up early so when we camp at the lake I am always on my first spot by dawn, I get to fish until about 10 when I have to head in and fix brunch ( breakfast for lunch ) those few hours are blissful, I can't deny that, when one can hear the air being split by the whip of the rod and the reel whining as the line is being spoiled off before anyone else is on the water, it's one gripping moment that makes you want it even more, its also one of reflection.

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

I prefer to share the experience with my dad or a friend, but there's nothing like being the only one on a lake in my kayak on a nice day.

fishing user avatarMissourifishin reply :

Both have their advantages. I do a lot of fishing alone though, and kinda wish I had company more often.

fishing user avatarGoldstar225 reply :

Rarely ever get to fish alone.  I would catch heck from my grandson if I went fishing without him.

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

Enjoy it while you can.My grandkids used to love fishing. Now I have to bribe them to get them to go.

fishing user avatarLast_Cast reply :

I like fishing with someone, good company is always a plus.

fishing user avatarJRammit reply :

Alone!... By far!

I only like fishing with people who enjoy it as much as i do... And that list is short!

fishing user avatarwhitwolf reply :

I can fish alone or with others. The older I get the conversation and merely being on thew water Is a great thing. That being said I'll share this; I fished with a friend on mine for years and at the start It was a blast. As the years passed it became Increasingly difficult to fish with him. 3-4 years ago I finally had enough and now fish alone the biggest majority of the time. I have learned to appreciate the solace, take In the beauty of being on the water, me, my thoughts, a few fish, and the keen awareness that I'm In a position to do what I love. The one person that's always welcome and encouraged to come fish Is my wife. She doesn't care what we're catching as long as she's catching fish. This woman agreed to fish on our honeymoon a couple of years ago! It was my single best day on the water as she caught her personal best largemouth three different times that day, how cool Is that?!

The point of the above story Is this; Have FUN! What's the point If you're not enjoying the time on the water? If that means you fish alone do that, If It means taking someone, do that.  If you find a balance or preference, you more than likely will have a great trip, year, and life! :)

fishing user avatarYoungPlug reply :

If I'm pond hopping or doing some type of fishing that I know I'll get bit, then I absolutely prefer a partner. If I'm trying out a new technique or going to a new body of water I prefer fishing alone so I can focus on trying to figure out the bass.

fishing user avataravidone1 reply :

I prefer to fish alone, but will enjoy fishing with the right friend once in a while too.

fishing user avatard-camarena reply :

Ive always been a lone fisherman, bringing people always annoyed me. I recently started fishing with one of my employees. He had never fished before, he is now addicted to fishing and is learning so fast. He really listens to what i tell him and fishes just like i teach him. I dont mind fishing with him.

fishing user avatarbassr95 reply :

My favorite is fishing with my buddy who I grew up fishing with. We always agree on where/how to fish and it's nice being able to try out two baits at the same time to narrow down what's working. I know if he isn't catching them on a senko there's no point in me throwing one. I'ts almost like fishing with two of me on the boat, and that's something I miss when I fish with other people who have different ideas about location and such. Fishing alone on a boat gets lonely for me, but I do bank fish alone fairly often.

fishing user avatarcontium reply :

I usually either fish with my wife or by myself. I occasionally fish with a buddy but I feel too much like a guide when I bring people out on my boat. I feel responsible for them catching fish.

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

I don't have a singe friend who is really interesting in fishing, so most of the time I am alone.  However, I do have a buddy who is very into birding, so we go out hiking together all the time.  Between me stopping at every likely looking spot and him sneaking off after some very exciting duck noise, we usually only manage a mile or three in an 7-8 hour day.

I have a standing offer to all my friends to come with me, I have so much gear from my early "must buy three of everything" phase that I could give away enough to get someone started without even missing it.

fishing user avatarScarborough817 reply :

i definitely don't mind fishing with friends i'm trying to get some friends into fishing so i try to teach a bit. most of the time i am alone though since i mainly bank fish or fish at a family cottage

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

One thing I'll add is that if you fish with someone, try to drive separate if the location allows.  There's a lake in SoCal called Barrett Lake that's a pay-to-fish lake run by the city, where it's difficult to get tickets and not cheap.  It's in the middle of nowhere where people are waking up at 3-4am to make the drive out and get to the gate when it opens. I saw two guys at around 1130am after the morningbite, and one guy was whiny and upset he wasn't catching fish and wanted to pack up and go.  The other guy tried to talk him into staying that it'll get better but the other guy was having none of it.  So they both packed up and left.  I always prefer to drive separate for reasons like this, where if one person needs to cut out early for any reason, the other always has the option to stay and keep fishing.

fishing user avatargimruis reply :

I prefer to fish with someone as long as I'm not "babysitting" them.  As long as they have at least somewhat of an idea of what they're doing I can generally tolerate them.  Plus it usually makes it easier launching the boat and parking.  Sometimes I'll go solo mission but I worry about catching a huge fish and then not being able to get photographic evidence of it.  I almost always take my yellow lab with now.  She doesn't say much and she doesn't do much fishing either, she just kind of sits or lays there and enjoys the trip, and she never complains.

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

Realistically I really don’t have a preference, but when I get in a zone I am not a good conversationalist. It is always tough to find the line of just enough conversation, and it really depends on the bite too. I do like taking people on a body of water I know well and I can teach them some new techniques.

There is one time though that I like to myself. Those early morning trips on the vacation lake when the sun is coming up and I have had loons within 10 ft of the boat doing their assorted calls, the eagles are out and active, Muskies poke their heads out and check you out, and just the peace and quiet because I pretty much have the lake to myself. Those are the moments when you realize how awesome life and nature are.

fishing user avatardallas reply :

Usually alone, it's relaxing ^_^

fishing user avatarDjf3864 reply :

I prefer to fish with someone else, it is usually my brother.  Helps to have two heads working on what the fish are looking for rather than one.

fishing user avatarJeff Bernaeyge reply :

I fish anyway I can

fishing user avatarOklahoma Mike reply :

I fish alone more often than not, but I don't mind a fishing partner at all - so long as he isn't the type to annoy me or wants to pack up and go home after only a short while.

fishing user avatarBucketMouth15 reply :

Both have pros and cons, I like alone because I can try new things (lures, locations) and I won't care if I get skunked. When with someone I feel obligated to get on some fish but its a lot more fun when you're catching nice fish and someone is there to enjoy it with you

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

Normally, I fish with my son or I fish alone. Mostly alone. I'm long since retired, and he doesn't have the luxury of going fishing as often as I do.

fishing user avatarYudo1 reply :

I prefer to be alone in my yak.  I do like being in the back of my buddy's boat, but I don't seem to do as well.

fishing user avatarAndrewJ reply :

100% prefer to fish with someone else.  95% of my fishing is done with my wife and it is some of the only time we get to have with one another.  When I am not fishing with her, I like to fish with buddies, I always seem to learn something new when I go out with someone else.

what he said. I grew up in the city and spent my working life being part of a team on projects. now that I'm retired. I try to get as far away from "civilization" as I can get and be alone with the "wild and dangerous" wilderness.

fishing user avatarjunyer357 reply :

im mixed. When i fish a buddys pond i prefer to be alone. I just plug in my headphones (drowns out 4lane hwy nearby) and forget the rest of the world exists. In the boat i am ok fishing alone but usually prefer someone else to help with loading, unloading, as well as ifi get hung up or a fish on to control boat.

At the same time i also really enjoy fishing with folks better than me. Its how i learn about diffrent techniques,  lures, etc.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

I either fish alone in the kayak, with another kayaker (my buddy or my daughter) or from the back seat of my other buddy's boat.

They're all fine with me because they all have advantages, but I just seem to catch more and bigger fish when I'm alone in the kayak.

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

You know when I fish alone....I prefer to be by myself.

fishing user avatarWurming67 reply :

I fish by myself 75 percent of the time I take my wife out and friend from time to time.I prefer fishing alone I am more focused,I fish alot better, figure out patterns better and it gives me time to get in touch with nature and clear my head.

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

All things even, fishing with passionate guys are enjoyable.  That said, as the years have passed, I find myself content by myself.  My wife believes I prefer fish over 99.9% of the people I know

edit.....I plan on having permanent fishing partners as soon as my grand kids are old enough

edit II....This Summer a couple of us are working with the local legion, and deticating 1 day a week to taking a vet fishing.....really looking forward to that

fishing user avatarHappybeerbuzz reply :

It’s like listening to music.  Alone or with others are both good alternatives but different.

fishing user avatarfrosty reply :

We resurrected an oldie  the only person I’ve fished with was a guy from church, and we only went out once. I asked if he wanted to go, he says he has to finish something up and he’ll be right there. 3 hours later he shows up as I’m getting ready to walk back to the car. That kinda drives me nuts any way, especially when I figure you’re not coming anyway. I do take my 4 year old a lot, he’s usually pretty good, just plays in the dirt and checks out the fish I catch.

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

I fish alone 90% of the time. The 10% with others is enjoyable but I hate when it turns into a competition. I am the quantity over quality type.

My wife and kids tag along sometimes. They make up 20% of my trips with others. The remaining 5% is fishing with a buddy or three from time to time. I'm blessed to have a fishing family. The wife and kids actually go often, but I literally fish every single day from the end of March to the beginning of November, weather permitting. Usually multiple times a day.

Been doing freedive spearfishing, freedive lobstering, freedive wreck diving, freediving in natural freshwater springs, etc for close to 20 years now and agree that it is best to dive with a partner than dive alone. Have done many solo beach dives as well( have done more dives with a partner), but you have to be in excellent health to do these types of beach dives and even then I still would reccomend someone to dive with to be safe.

Yes, I am in no way suggesting, or recommending anyone dive alone. I originally joined the military to dive, and even though that didn't happen, I have had exposure and training with and by professional and combatant divers that gives me a level,of comfort I can live with. Still when the you know what hits the fan, it's an extra level of safety to have a buddy, assuming equal or similar capabilities. Everyone please be safe.

fishing user avatarLionHeart reply :

Alone.  That's one of the best parts.

fishing user avatarflg2010 reply :

I prefer alone.. simply because as I get older I find that finding people with the same interests is impossible.  At some point I hope to get my wife to go out with me.. maybe if I am around in 10 years and contemplating retirement I can get her to join me on a small boat in a lake somewhere.

Right now I Fish the Walkill River system and have given myself the project of catching a state record Rock Bass.  That is a solitary pursuit.

agreed. I don't mind so much with good friends but I fish in a club where we draw partners but each guy is responsible for his own limit. I spend the day trying to catch a limit but also feel responsible for them catching a limit as well.

I don't know 2 years ago I fish with my buddy a lot and sometime I wish I came out by myself. He is one of those never quit type but I'm family come first. This past two years I mostly fish by myself since my buddy had to moved for his work. He did come visit me last year a few times. Now I wish I had some good buddy that I can fish, share the lures the techniques, heck even talk bad about the wifes while fishing.

fishing user avatarMr. Aquarium reply :

depends, with my fishing buddies we have great laughs and its a good time. but some days being out in the woods alone is so amazing. quiet, just the sounds of nature.

fishing user avatarSJex reply :

Nothing gives me more joy than fishing with my son and daughter. Fishing alone allows me to concentrate more on technique. But fishing with my kids is way more fun. Fishing with them leaves me with a great sense of pride, and memories that I will always cherish. Much in the same way as it was fishing with my father. I love fishing alone, but I would rather fish with my friends or family.

fishing user avatarF15HGuy reply :

Since we were children, my fishing partner has been my brother. We are in our forties now, and a few years ago he moved to SAN Diego(from Georgia). We still make time to fish in Ga or Ca at least once a year. Though I do still enjoy fishing alone, there is not much I wouldn't do to have my brother in my boat again on every trip.

fishing user avatarPro Logcatcher reply :

I mostly fish alone but sometimes some conversation is appreciated.

fishing user avatarRpratt reply :

I seem to have much better days when fishing by myself. I don't have the worries of making sure whoever I am fishing with is not having a good time, that my boat is not positioned to where they can't fish etc etc. However, there is nothing much more fun and satisfying then when you have your ultra competitive good buddy out there with ya, and you just nail a nice fish in front of him ????

fishing user avatarMobasser reply :

I often fish 2 smaller lakes alone. But, I like going with my son in laws and enjoy the company too.

fishing user avatareinscodek reply :

When I'm with someone else I am really going to help that person catch fish and enjoy.  I really at that point have low expectations for myself.

When I am after the big un', I take noone with me except a camera.

fishing user avatarWDE reply :

Typically alone. I’m strictly a bank fisherman; and if I don’t get a bite in 10-15 casts while fan casting, I’m on the move and I’ll leave my partner.

My buddy that I will fish with occasionally doesn’t fish as much as I do, so when he sees me catching fish, he gets discouraged/frustrated and will be ready to leave long before I even think about departing. I find it rude to just keep fishing while he throws in the towel and sits there. I have to remind him that sometimes, especially in the Winter, I’ll go days without a single bite.

It’s just easier for me to have my own agenda and not worry about another person and focus solely on fishing and being in the moment.

fishing user avatarMickD reply :

Small water, I prefer alone or with my zealot son.  Big water, Lake St Clair and Saginaw Bay, I don't go alone.  Better to have a partner in case something goes wrong.

I always enjoy fishing with a partner whenever I go out.  I have 5 good fisherman I can call who fish with me often.  They all have different skills and will sometimes get on a pattern before I do.  They don't have boats, and I provide an opportunity to fish places they don't normally fish.  Once on a pattern we will make adjustments from there.  It is always better when you share the experience with a friend..  There are always lots of laughs, and it just makes for a better experience.   Its all about having fun!????

When I fish alone I usually catch a 10lb'r.......  ????

I have no preference as long as I am on the water.  I enjoy fishing with a friend to chat and learn since I am a new boater.

I've just started fish if about 2 years ago, and I've really not had any fishing buddies, not that I havnt tried. 99% of the time it's just me maybe my son who's 8. I'd personally rather have someone else with me for a few reasons. 1 being you never know what could happen and you need someone to drive you to the hospital for whatever reason. 2 I'd likely be throwing somthing different than they are so if one of us starts getting g bites we can find a pattern faster
