Talk About A Deceiving Pic... 2024

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

Anyone else see that "11-4" in the Lunker Club pics in the back of the Jan/Feb issue of BassMaster? Caught by Mike Carbone, next to the 11-13 that looks like it could eat the 11-4. I wouldn't think twice if he said it was a 5 1/2 lber. And I'm not calling him out on it. There were some threads about pics, how fish look different in some pics, how to hold for a pic etc... back a couple of months ago and all I'm saying is that this sure is a deceiving pic. I wasn't there and didn't see a scale so I cannot say; but Mike must be 7' tall and tip a scale at about 300...

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Smokinal, the secrets to taking a good photo of you with your bass includes:

1. Nothing in the background to take away from the photo.

2. If the water is shown have the background bank about shoulder high.

3. Hold the bass out in front of you to make it look larger.

4. Lie about its weight.

Simple way to take the photo.

P.S.  Make sure your fly is up if it is a full body photo.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

I know exactly what you're talking about Smokinal. That guys scale was way off. Looking to get published and he did...

I missed that picture, but the magazine was lying right on my kitchen table.

Either that bass weighs around 5 pounds, or Michael has the largest hands of any man in Massachusetts  :laughing7:

fishing user avatarmnbassman23 reply :

If you read the fine print under the photo it says "Caught on April 1st".

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

I saw it as well and recognized the same thing.  There will always be mistakes and/or untruths when it comes to the weight of fish.  This isn't the first one I've seen in Bassmaster.  Time to fish is to short to allow something like that to occupy my time when I could be studying, learning, and getting out on the water to increase the number of lunkers I bring in.  Still . . . . that picture could be an embarrassment for him in the future, if not already.  I hope it was a mistake.

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

My first thought when I saw that was the person that did the layout of that page probably put the photo of the 11-13 right next to the "11-4" on purpose..... ;)

Now, if you saw the photos (no weights listed) of the 11-13 and the 17-0 side by side - which would you call the bigger fish?  Hard to tell.

Photos capture memories,.........................accurate scales capture the weight...

fishing user avatarAK-Jax86 reply :

^ I like that photos capture memories accurate scales capture the weight.

Didn't see the pic that'd be cool if someone could post it here.

But when I catch my double digit that's what I got my gopro for, that and family videos but more so that lol.

The 11-13 looks quite a bit heavier than the 17-0, hands down in my opinion (both great fish nonetheless.) The 6-2 smallie in the photo to the left looks larger than the 11-4. Who knows?

That's too funny, I wondered if I was the only one who noticed that.  It didn't look as big as some of the 6lb smallies.

fishing user avatarbasshole8190 reply :

Id say a solid 8 is a believable weight

fishing user avatarBadBassWV reply :

You guys must have not seen under his picture it said the man holding the fish is "10 feet 7inches tall and Weighs 425lbs.  LOL!!!!! I knew i had caught a double digit,  d**n Scale.

fishing user avatarfishingman88 reply :

Hope he speaks up and clarifies the true weight of the fish...

fishing user avatarB@ssCrzy reply :

There is no way that fish is anywhere near 11 lbs.  The fish in my avatar was between 5 and 6 and it is bigger than that one.  Seems like 4-5 lbs to me.  The magazine editors need to do better than that.

:punch-2:

fishing user avatarbass1980 reply :

IMO that's a 6lber at best.

fishing user avatarced reply :

It's obvious looking at the body structure that fish is not anywhere near 11lbs, I would say half of that.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

In agreement, no way that's any more than 5.5-6 pounds.

My avatar fish weighed in at 6.6 pounds, 22 ¼" long.

fishing user avatarChampfishnva reply :

my guess would have been a SOLID 9 he looks to have the body to show it but that is IMO

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

Body size can affect how big a fish looks in a picture. Being 6'6" myself I can say I've had plenty of big fish look smaller when I hold them vs anyone else. That being said however, there's no way that fish is 11 lbs! Even if he's a 7 footer it's not that big.

fishing user avatarMainebass1984 reply :

No way that bass is anywhere near 11 lbs. I highly doubt the fish was even weighed. He probably guestimated the weight.

A few years ago someone from NY submitted a fish that was at best a 6lber, but claimed it to be 12.............which Bassmaster published. We had quite a laugh over it at NYBass, seems how it was big enough to be the new NY state record and all......LMAO

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

There's always fish like that in the Lunker Club of Bassmaster. If someone wants to lie about the size of their fish (not saying this guy did, I've seen some nice fish look like they'd barely keep and dinks that looked 10lbs in the picture) to get in a magazine, then have at it.

fishing user avatarStlbob reply :

My fish was almost 8 lb.  I'm 5'6, 145-155 depending on the week.  My hands measure 7" from where my palm and wrist meet to the tip of my middle finger.  You can clearly see the weight and fat of the fish bunching up and hanging below my right fingers, and an old basser told me that when they start to do that, they're starting to get big.

Like you all, I call BS on the lunker I quoted.

fishing user avatarFish_Whisperer reply :

fish5.jpg

I don't know the weight of this one.  Remember I am 5'6 , 150 lbs average.  from my waistline(where my belted jeans start) to the top of my shoulders measures 23".  This fish here was held almost to my side and almost touching my chest. Notice the tail fin stretching below the band of the shorts, and the lips a little bit above the shoulders.  You can say that the fish is about 25" long.

I guess that fish to weigh around 4 or 5 lbs.

Googly or bulging eyes has been said to be a sign of age and not size.

Something is fishy there...Your hand in the picture trying to make the bass look big could easily fit in the mouth of that bass, however, on the profile pic, there is no way your hand would even come close to fitting...Regardless if the arm is extended or not, it should make no difference with hand to mouth ratio. Something seems fishy. If you didn't tamper with the photo in any way, than i might be taking crazy pills which is still a viable option.

That is the idea. If she made the hand bigger too, the deception wouldn't work. Yes, the photo was tampered with. That's what I said. Altering the photo (of just the fish) was the whole idea to make the fish look bigger than it really was.

Thanks for clarifying, my point was that even with arm extension pictures, sometimes the hand to mouth ration keeps the weight of the fish honest. Thus the OP about this 11 pound bass could be debunked just by that ration alone. That was a great photo shop job by the way. It's unfortunate that that is possible. Should be a crime (not against you) but to those who do it seriously. Life term sentence.

Yes, I know you can't necessarily trust what you see anymore. Anytime I showed that photo to ANYONE, after a few minutes of oooo"s an ahhhh"s, I would explain what it really was, by showing them the original.

colors on your fish are downright awesome.

Thank you!  What are the odds that my first 12+ came with my wife (who is a semi-pro photographer) and her fancy camera in the boat with me!

I did say it was photoshopped.  The picture of me was taken about 3 or 4 years ago, the fish I had caught was barracuda, I do remember posting it here.  The "new fish" looks to be a good 20#, that fish was really only about 8# and I didn't catch it.  If you look closely at the fish's mouth you will see me holding a barracuda tube.

Unless you are a professional, you only need Photoshop Elements, a "lite" version of the program that will do most of what you want it for and costs less than $100

Hootie, think your wife can photoshop this fish, I want it turned over so the fish is right side up.

Hootie, this is the full photo as far as I know, it lives on photobucket.
