Anyone Superstitious? 2024

fishing user avatarSeaCrow reply :

Does anyone have any fishing superstitions? How about a lucky lure or favorite hat?  For instance, I won't fish on a Sunday. It's  bad luck for me..So what say you?

fishing user avatarMN Fisher reply :

Superstitions are...superstitious.

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

None.  Everything is based on science and mathematical probability.  If that info isn't available I fly by the seat of my pants - logic and experience.

fishing user avatarHarold Scoggins reply :

I only believe in science.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Not superstitious, just a little stitious. (Michael Scott)

Just kidding. I'm not such a person who has to wear

the same underwear during the entire football season

after my team wins. :D

fishing user avatarSeaCrow reply :

No lucky underwear??...no lucky lure?...somebody has to be slightly superstitious..lol..

fishing user avatarschplurg reply :

You seriously don't fish on one of the seven days we have because of "bad luck"?

Who dishes out this luck and why did they pick Sunday for you to be unlucky? I wonder if you can file an appeal, maybe change it to Tuesday or something. Then again I stay away on weekends sometimes due to crowds.

Maybe if you wear two different colored socks you could fish on Sundays.

I have no superstitions. I'll fish on Friday the 13th and I'll walk under a ladder indoors with an open umbrella to get there if I must. I even bring bananas sometimes so I guess you could call me a bit reckless ;)

I could see having a lucky shirt, but to not go at all - F that.

fishing user avatarSeaCrow reply :

I'm not too surprised that y'all aren't superstitious,  I did think some of y'all might have a lucky hat or something like that

I'm thinking of filing an appeal to the wonderful wizard of oz,, see what he can do for me. Honestly, I just take Sunday off usually.

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

I am about some things, but nothing about fishing.  My main one is that I *have* to get a haircut/beard trim the morning of or the day before I start a new gig.  Even when it's nothing client-facing and I am just monkeying around a warehouse I feel like I cannot focus and get started without a bald dome and neat beard.

fishing user avatarSeaCrow reply :

I just thought some fishers here would like have a lucky lure or something..

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

I am superstitious. I know if the sky is clear and there is no wind, my chances of a great day are non-existent. If it's overcast and windy, I could possibly have my best outing of the year.

All kidding aside, if I'm in a funk and need a good confidence building outing, I'll grab my favorite lure, rod/reel, a new Red Sox cap and I'll leave momma at home. There's some superstition and some logic mixed in there, but it's mostly confidence in myself, my gear and the fact that the wife isn't there to upstage me. The new Sox cap is just an excuse to get a new one.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Yep.

Cajun grandmother taught me to be superstitious since I was a young child.

When I am watching a sporting event and my team is doing well, I will not move or change positions until they screw up.  Used to get dressed for high school sports in a certain manner.  Had to touch home plate when I played on church's softball team going in and out of the field. Have to have certain brand name items for specific bodies of water including rods, reels, baits and presentations.

Crazy?  Yes. Does it work?  Every time.  Will I keep doing it?  Of course.

Now, do you want to discuss the ghost that haunts my house?????? Just ask my wife and she will tell you what it was doing to her as she quilted. ;)

The first cast catch curse is real. I don't care what anyone says. I never have a good outing when that happens. Had it happen 5 times this season alone. Sometimes I'll make a cast into land just to prevent the curse from happening.

Same brother always rock me some HUK headware out there especially on those windy spinnerbait days

fishing user avatarKoz reply :

I don't have any fishing or any other superstitions at this time. But I used to have a few.

I played hockey on college (goalie) and in the locker room I never let my sticks cross. On game days I was always the first one on the ice and the last one off the ice. I went on a 2 year undefeated streak and wore the same undershirt every single game, although I did wash it once at the end of that first season. We lost in the playoffs in year two and I tossed the shirt away.

I also pitched for my college baseball team and never, ever stepped on the baseline when going to the mound or dugout. It didn't help, though. I got rocked more often than not.

fishing user avatarMobasser reply :

I have no superstitions with fishing. When I was iny teens, I boxed in the Kansas City Golden Gloves for 3yrs. My thing was this: I always had my dad touch my gloves before a fight. He did this for me, and I think he said a quick prayer. He did this in 1973, on the final night of the Golden Gloves for me. I won the the novice division championship that night by 3rd round TKO. I weighed 119lbs. My dad did this for me for the rest of my fights.I think it helped

fishing user avatarJediAmoeba reply :

I have a lot of superstitions...

fishing user avatar813basstard reply :

“Very superstitious..writin’s on the wall..”

Nah, if you fish a lot you’ll get past all those.

My favorite bait is the one that’s working. I’ll throw a butter knife on a bobber if it gets bit.

Superstitions is a placebo which does effect outcome on a short term basis.

Anyone superstitious about their marriage?

Don’t think so.

fishing user avatarjbsoonerfan reply :

I prefer to fish in a white TW shirt like in my profile pic since I was wearing one both times I beat my PB. But I will fish in any shirt. I will NEVER step on a chalk line on a baseball/softball field though. That started when I was mabe 12 or 13 and I played through college and have coached for 14 years and I still won't step on the lines.

Seriously though, I do wear my fishing shirt/hat/sunshield as appropriate for the weather, but that's why I bought them, so I'm not sure it counts.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

I'm not superstitious at all except  when the owls start hooting .  Ir seems to me  that whenever the owls  start hooting  fishing picks up  even if its in the middle of a bright sunny day .

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

I do have a lucky hat that I always wear fishing and have gone back for it if I forget it.  (Happened once).  I think it's held together with sweat and slime at this point.  I'm guessing it will require a burial at sea next season.  I gotta figure out how to transfer it's mojo to a new hat.  It is actually disconcerting to me that it is on it's last legs, which I know is silly but still......

I have one like this.  I always use an anti-slip glove on my left hand because my grip strength is not great from some nerve damage and because I don't want to submit a fish to sunscreen.  I NEVER put it on when I first go out.  It doesn't go on until the first fish is in the boat.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

And one I just thought about:  I do not want to catch a bass on my first cast of the day.

If so, it will bring me bad luck for the rest of the day.

Very next cast, right into a tree, LOL. And to be honest,

Not superstitious. But I wear a lucky green thong backwards and inside out. Started as a convenience of one less layer to relieve myself during the colder months but it brought the luck year round. fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

Am superstitious when comes to fishing? ......  A little.

When I was a kid (1970s) my dad and his fishing buddies had some weird ones.....  they were convinced that when the fishing sucked that there was an Omen in the lake that kept them from catching fish, my dad had a lucky hat and a lucky rod and in general any rod that was white was just plain bad luck.

The only thing that I still go with is the lucky hat and I sort of believe in the white rod theory.

fishing user avatarkeagbassr reply :

I usually spend the first 5-6weeks of the season tracking which hat and or shirt I'm wearing when I have a good or bad day to see if any have some good 'mojo'. Also back before smartphones when I had a camera on a tripod i like @Pickle_Power would never catch anything if I had it at the ready. Was always fun trying to set it up with one hand while holding a bass in the other.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

I'm not superstitious, but I'll bet that there is someone (or a few?) here that:

-Don't fill the livewell before they've caught a fish

-Don't get the scale and/or measuring board out before they've caught a fish

-Don't make a meaningful first cast

-I've talked to a number of guys that claim not to be superstitious, but wouldn't have a banana in the boat

-More than a couple talk to or kiss one of the early catches of the day

When I take a jon boat fishing i get out the measuring board ,a marker buoy , fish   grip and rig the camera with a tripod   before making my first cast. I want  to  be prepared , dont want to hook myself ,want to mark the spot while fighting the fish and get a picture a of a big one as quickly as possible .

At the risk of angering Chango, I'll just say that the Mojo hand is normally used to "fix" one's lover, as to make them not wander. The trick is to get a real Mojo hand, as there are very very few around, but I've said too much. Now I gotta go find a vela and a panuelo de seda, or maybe I'll just go rabbitt hunting and amputate him at the knees. Folks are going to believe, what folks are going to believe, it's all valid, and it's all not, just depends on one's perspective. Now where did I leave my Tarrot deck, oh yeah, on the pew...

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

I don't think I am superstitious, but there is two things I do.

#1. I have a lucky penny I found at the ramp on my boat's maiden voyage.  The penny has been up front on the deck of that boat for over twenty years.

#2. I do everything I possibly can, to not catch a fish on the first cast.  I will throw out and reel in fast. You can't believe how many times, I have caught on the first cast and then the bite just died.  This new technique has worked out pretty good for me.  Makes no sense but I like it!

I had a pitcher explain to me how unlucky this was to do.

So I did just the opposite. I always stepped on the line on the way out and on the way in.

I told him I'd do it, so all the bad luck came my way and he could concentrate on pitching.

(of all positions on a diamond the pitcher is the one with the greatest possibility of being a head case)

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

There isn't anything wrong about being superstitious, it's not a sign of weakness or ignorance.

If you believe a specific idiosyncratic act brings you good luck or bad luck I believe you are normal. Lots of people don't believe in luck or religion, I feel sorry them.

I have more quirks then most being analytical to a fault, focused at times blocking out everything around me and more then a few superstitions.

We had horse shoe nailed up over the garage door, a rabbit hanging for good luck at our home. Friday the 13th was observed as a day of bad luck.

Any sport I was envolved in had superstitions and always gave them credence. Why upset the balance, I learned the hard way when you do. There is usually a good reason behind most superstitions and they make life more interesting.

fishing user avatarTennessee Boy reply :

So a guy goes fishing with a new hat and a new lure.  He has a great day.  Was it because the new hat is lucky?  Was it because the new lure is the best lure ever?   or was it just a good day?

It's probably a bigger mistake to give too much credit to the lure than it is to give any credit to the hat.  It's human nature to try to explain what are largely random events both good and bad.   That's the nature of superstition.  Being able to interpret everything that happens on the water and put it in its proper context is a critical fishing skill.

You do need a hat to keep the sun out of your eyes so it might as well be the lucky hat. ????

Superstition, good and bad karma, voodoo, etc. I have a relationship with them all.

I fell while bank fishing twice last season while fishing with a certain rod and reel. Same rod and reel went flying from my hands on a cast and crashed onto some rocks. Never happened before, my hand just opened at the end of the cast. I lost the same combo over the side of my kayak. I was able to get it back but it was the first rod I lost overboard.

Too much coincidence not to make me think it wasn’t cursed.

I've heard many theories on this, but the one that seems the most plausible, is about shipping in the 1800's.  Ships would bring bananas from the tropics to America. Often those bananas had poisonous spiders hidden in the bunches which, in turn, would kill several of the deckhands before they could reach port.

Soon it became "legend" that bananas on boats were "bad luck".

I'm not sure how accurate that is - or true - but it seems plausible.

I actually have to throw one on there every once in while just to remind myself how ridiculous being superstitious is for me personally though. I do respect other peoples though, and get a kick out of some of the classics : IE bananas, first cast, lucky hat, lure, etc. To each their own if someone is though.

Never catch a fish on the first cast. If I get bit on the first cast, I won’t set the hook.

Well, thinking like that sure should cure that superstition! Haha.

Having superstitions is unlucky.

fishing user avatarTriStateBassin106 reply :

Snagging a lure after catching a fish on it will result in a terrible day of fishing.

Happened twice this season. Lost two good cranks after pulling in a decent bass and the bite shutdown right after on both trips.

I am not superstitious in the conventional sense, however, I always make a tobacco offerings and silently say a prayer of thanks and that any fish caught can be released without injury....

To the best of my knowledge that's where it came from. Spiders in the bananas caused alot of deckhands and harvesters to die.

fishing user avatarstepup reply :

Not really superstitious but I wont make a good cast on the first cast of the day.  I usually flip my bait out into the middle of the lake and reel it in superfast to make sure I dont  catch a fish onto he first cast.  My net stays put up until the first fish is on.  I will only fill my livewells when I catch the first fish to go in. If I have a big fish I dont weigh it before weigh in.  When I cull I always throw the fish off the opposite side of the boat I am fishing. I wont quit using a worm after it has caught a fish until it is totally unusable. If I have a really good day on the water my rods stay on deck until the next time I go fishing.  I don't want to put the rods up if the have just been used to hammer them.  If I have a bad day.  Anything I fish with gets cut off and re tied.  I have a special color I have more confidence in because I won a couple tournaments on it on tough days when I know that the color wasn't the deciding factor but I still feel it is kind of lucky.  I dont think I am that superstitious though.

I don't necessarily do all I can to prevent it, but daggumit - catching a fish on the 1st cast seems to ruin the rest of the day......almost like the fish are superstitious.....it's happened to me before, but I don't place a lot of belief in it, but it IS weird.

Many, many times My dad and I would catch one each early and comment that it was a good sign, only to have the fish get lockjaw right after. get lockjaw. My dad would always say we just hit the tail end of a feeding time. I don't believe that now. No matter what the solunar table says, morning is the best time when the water's warm, followed by late evening. Then there are occasional bursts of activity during the day.

I used to think it was a jinx to remember the net and/or the scale.

fishing user avatarShimano_1 reply :

No superstitions for me. I'm OCD about keeping the boat clean and organized.  Nothing takes my head out of it like the boat being all cluttered up

fishing user avatarDeeGee68 reply :

The funny thing is I am not a superstitious person but we bought a new boat and they called and said I could either pick it up Friday or Saturday so I was stoked then my wife said we cant get it Friday, its the 13th!

I was like and???? but a few other people said they agreed!

So I got it the 14th instead!

Off topic, but have to share - My sister once got a bunch of green grapes from Wal Mart.  Once arriving at home, she put the whole bag in the sink to rinse them off.  Out comes a black widow spider.  Mind you, we live in Iowa, where there are definitely no black widows.

She called the Wal Mart to complain, and they gave her a $150 gift card.

I've only heard of the Banana Curse thing. Never heard of the others like the First Cast thing so they obviously can't affect me ;)

fishing user avatarDanielG reply :

I never go fishing the first time during a new season. I only go the second time. Going the first time is a jinx thing waiting to happen.

????

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Yes, I am superstitious, and proud of it.

It started with my Cajun grandmother who helped raise me in south Louisiana and continued through middle and high school and then through college.

Carried superstitions with me in the Army and Vietnam and still have them to this day.

Not going into my bass fishing superstitions, alebet one,  but I do things a certain way everytime I go fishing. The one I will share is that I never, never, never want to catch anything on my first cast. So I throw out my buzzbait and reel it back fast to prevent any bass from hitting it.

I believe that should you catch a bass on your first cast of the day you will have a lousy day fishing.

True?  Give it a try and let us know. :stupid:

fishing user avatarCrankFate reply :

I’m not superstitious. Though, I’ve been catching less fish since I broke my lucky knife removing an old kitchen backsplash. That said, I only use Aveeno sunblock, because it does not affect fishing. And when I’m fishing alone on a concrete platform pier, with the water up to my ankles and there's a shark bigger than me 3 feet away checking me out, I go home and don’t look back.

Lol! I intentionally and habitually make a random cast in a very unlikely area as soon as I get on the water to dismiss the first cast superstition. This was passed on to me by my father when I was a child.
