Your biggest fish. 2024

fishing user avatarangler1 reply :

What lure, whether it was artifical or live bait, have you caught your largest fish on. Give a good description of what you used if it was an artifical. We are all from different places on the map so a little detail would not give away your "secret lure or color". How wuch did it weigh.

Mine was a 4lb 14oz largemouth caught on a 3/8 oz. Chatterbait with a black and blue skirt with a black 4" Mr. Twister split double tail grub trailer.

fishing user avatarDock Master reply :

Mine would be a 7.4 LMB. Didn't post it on here because I hit the "END" button on my phone before I saved the picture!!! (I think I won the dummy of the year award for doing that!!)

Anyway, I caught it on a Lucky Craft G-Splash in ghost blue shad color fishing the edge of some matted grass in about 4' of water.

fishing user avatarguitarkid reply :

It was the last cast of the day, I just made a random cast from the shore across this big flat with a chartreuse and white shad looking booyah spinnerbait and pulled in a 23" largemouth bass. I have since retired the lure and have it hanging off of a thumbtack on my wall.

I replay it in mind often :D

February 3rd 2007 was a nasty cold morning with Northwest winds at 15-20 mph, a slight misty rain falling, and temperatures in the middle 30's. After having launched out of Jack's 944 Marina I made the short (2 minutes) run to the mouth of Bull creek trying to stay out of the wind and some what warm. Having rounded the corner I dropped the trolling motor, picked up my Rat-L-Trap rod again with the thought in mind of keeping moving and staying warm. My third cast was into the mouth a cut leading to a boat shed which I knew had stumps on the west side, after turning the handle 4 or 5 times my trap stopped solid, I tell Pat d**n to close to the stumps so I push the trolling motor handle towards the mouth of the cut while stepping on the switch. At the exact same instance my line starts zinging towards deeper water rod all bowed up & drag slipping; I immediately scream at Pat get the net. By now the boat is moving off to my left the bass is moving off to my right and I'm nearly on my knees in front of the console with the upper third of the rod in the water. Pat net in hand is now on the front deck killed the trolling motor and with a swift motion netted the hawg; which ends up weighing in at 12 pounds 8 ounces.

Nice story Catt.

Mine is much less dramatic.

5 lb 8 oz caught on a watermelon/red Horny Toad.

Man I love a good topwater bite.

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

Speaking of a good topwater bite, mine came on a Rage Tail Shad, in green pumpkin/chartreuse, rigged on a 5/0 owner Twistlock hook, 12 lb mono line. I was fishing this little pond near my house early in the morning (this was just 8 weeks ago). Fishing out of my jon boat, and 4th cast of the morning landed my personal best of 7lbs, 10oz. Awesome day! Pretty exciting fighting a huge fish in a little tin boat in the dark!

fishing user avatarD4u2s0t reply :

My biggest of the year was a tad under 5 lbs caught deadsticking a smokin rooster in about 3-4 feet of water.  That's a pretty big fish for my area.  Got a pickerel a tad over 2.5 feet on a spinnerbait, but it was skinny.  Ripped a huge hole in it's mouth, so didn't weigh it.  Got it off the bait and immediately put it back in, didn't even take it out of the water fully. i'm not familiar enough with pickerel to even try to estimate weight so i'm not going to.

fishing user avatarFishbone reply :

This probably doesn't count, but I caught a 28 pound, 44 inch Striped Bass in the Jersey surf on a large chunk of Bunker on a number 10/0 circle hook. It was like my first buck.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

13.86 lbs. Rapala Shad Rap SR7SD.

14-4 on a prototype 3:16 1-Up swimbait. I lost my cell phone in the process of trying to snap a picture. Drove around the lake for a few minutes with the fish in my livewell trying to find someone with a camera with no luck. Ended up releasing the fish after not being able to find a camera. I was even offering one of my reels to someone that could take a picture and send it to me. That fish ended up costing me over $200 lol

Largest fish I have a picture of is 13-2 caught on a 3:16 10.5" Wake Bait.

fishing user avatarBig Mike in Fl reply :

Apprx 11lbs. Caught april 2008, in a 10 acre pond, using a 5" smoke shad Tiki stick. Was throwing along a reed line, when she picked it up, subtly, she ran right at the boat, so I had no idea how big she was until she surfaced, and my mouth hit the floor of the jon boat. she shook her head a couple of times at the surface and then dove. fought her for about 5 minutes before I got her to the boat, my cousin lipped her.

now, for the rest of the story; I had no scale, and no camera, so I got on the phone...first to my fishing buddy, no answer. next to my mother, who drove 15 miles, with my grandparents to take a picture of her. mean while, we put her on a stringer and tied her to the back cleat of the boat, where she proceeded to pull around 600lbs worth of men in a 12' jon boat.

when my mother arrived, I took some pictures, measurements and back into the water she went. what a belly on her, as she was ready to burst with eggs. Funny thing is, while we'd caught tons fo dinks in that pond, she was the only good size fish we've caught in there, ever!

<--------- Thats here, right there.

7lb 10oz on a Zoom u-tail watermelon seed

was invited to a private pond at a housing development.... the u-tail was what i had tied on from my last outing so i tried it..... 3rd cast!!!  on light spinning gear with 8lb test mono trilene.

the person who invited me had some good luck that day too.....but he only fishes about 4 times a year.. and he hasn't fished since...  :'(

i keep tellin him we gotta go again but he has 3 kids and never gets the chance....and i won't ruin a good thing and go without him.  just waiting for the day he wants to go again.  we caught at least 6 over 5lbs that day.  some on black jitterbug at dusk... now thats heartstopping!!!

fishing user avatarUncle Leo reply :

6lb 14oz LM caught on a T-Rig Lizard. My top 10 have either come on a Jig or T-Rig Plastic.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I'll stick to bass for this one, LOL.  7-2 on a 10" black berkley Power Worm, 1/2 oz. TT weight, 15# CXX.  Was fishing a deep weedline that ended at about 17 FOW, with a ledge down to about 70 FOW.  Fish hit it on a deadstick in about 35 FOW.  Other than thinking it was a big drum, and staying down, the fight was uneventful.

fishing user avatarHuntFishAK reply :

My best was approx. 6 lbs, caught from shore on a Matzuo Hunting Dawg.  The bite was real subtle for a topwater strike.  More of a slurp.  I didn't even see it since I was watching some guys on a boat messing around with the engine.  I heard the slurp then I just felt weight.  I ended up getting wet for this fish.  The bank I was undercut, and I wasn't about to horse this one up.  So I got in the water and landed it.  By this time, the guys in the boat were watching me.  I hoisted that fish up to give them a good look.  They weren't to thirlled.  ;D

fishing user avatarFishing Rhino reply :

My biggest fish, caught on a line was a basking shark.  No bait or lure was needed.

At the time I was a commercial lobsterman.  What happens is the line between the traps on a trawl floats off the bottom.

The sharks feed on plankton and krill.  They swim through the water with their mouth wide open filtering their food from the water.

Some, unfortunately get the line in their mouths.  Then they thrash and get tangled up in the line, and making a mess of the trawl.

I've hauled them up all wrapped in line with four or five lobster traps against their bodies.

"The largest specimen accurately measured was trapped in a herring net in the Bay of Fundy, Canada in 1851. Its total length was 12.27 metres (40.3 ft), and it weighed an estimated 19 tons."  (from wikipedia)

The largest one I have caught was over thirty feet.

The worst was hauling gear about fifty miles south of Westport, MA in 30 to 35 fathoms of water.  We had six of the creatures entangle in our trawls.  Two of them in the same trawl.

It's a bloody nightmare of a mess.  The worst one took nearly three hours to clear.  The easiest took about fifteen minutes.

We did have a sea turtle entangled in our ground line.  Fortunately for the turtle, it must have just happened.  He was still alive when we brought it to the surface, and we were able to free it without harm.

Now, federal regs require the use of sinking line.  That's a big problem when fishing rocky bottom.  Hangup after hangup.  Those regs went into effect after I got out of lobstering.

As for finfish.

Largest largemouth.  Just over ten pounds on a chatterfrog.

Largest smallmouth.  Just over five pounds on a Mepps plain spinner, gold blade, #2 if I remember correctly.  That was over forty years ago.

Largest pickerel 36" on an inline spinner with a small treble hook and an inch and a half length of teardrop shaped pickerel belly meat.

That was nearly fifty years ago.

Largest bluefish just over fifteen pounds on a mackerel Rebel plug, medium size.  Nearly forty years ago off Nauset Beach hanging in the shade of a floating telephone pole, and  rockweed, when we lived on Cape Cod.

Largest striper 42 pounds on a flourescent pink Hoochie or Hootchie Troll in Cape Cod bay near Billingsgate Shoals.  That about forty years ago also.  They stopped making those baits.  RoLo is one of our members who remembers them.  They resemble a squid.

They were a hot bait among the charter fleets in Cape Cod Bay.  Don't know why they quit making them.  Wasn't from lack of demand.  Not back then anyway.

This is the closest thing I have seen to the old Hootchie Trolls.  http://www.cabelas.com/p-0003477.shtml

The largest hootchies of the seventies were nearly a foot long, if memory serves.  The head was lead, and the 7/0 hook was at the end of a bead chain that went through the lead head.  There was also a shorter version of seven or eight inches, but the larger were more popular.

Fastest action, also  when we lived on the Cape.  1971, Cape Cod bay west of Jeremy Point, Wellfleet.  Seventeen bass and seventeen bluefish in less than two hours of frantic fishing, during a "blitz".  The stripers ranged from 8 to 17 pounds and the Blues averaged about 8 pounds.  Also caught a couple of sea gulls that I had to unhook and release.  All those on a mackerel Rebel.

The water around my skiff was boiling with fish.  Never seen the likes of it before or since.

I opted not to chime in as I thought this was LMB only, of which I've caught a number over 10#.

Few months back I caught a tarpon off the surf with light spinning with a poppa dog, went apx 80#.

Just a memorable catch of my youth......Cobia, spinning gear, 1975 age 30, sold that fish to a chef at the Pier House hotel in Key west.

fishing user avatarkikstand454 reply :

my biggest largemouth was caught waist deep in the water in a little pond. i was wading with my brother, throwing 1/16oz. black/ yellow stripe beetlespins and we were catching some good dinks. we got towards the deep corner of the pond and my line went slack and i set the hook and it felt like i had a truck. we had no way to measure or weigh or take a pic, so i conservatively guess it between 8.5 and 9.5. i like to think it went ten though.... it was as long as my torso.

my largest smallmouth ironically came much the same way... though we were wading Greenbriar river in w.va. and we came to a cut where anthony's creek empties into it and there in the wash was a boulder top... we both threw our 2" floating rapala minnows (mine in that perch color and his in black and gold.) at it... a fish swirled on his and he missed it and i threw back in before he could and landed a smallie approx 4lbs.

it was awesome... we ran it back up stream... stopping in pools to let her breathe... and showed my parents. there was another couple there that we didnt know and they took a pic and my addresss and said theyd send the pic. i never heard from them :'(

ive caught some good sharks..around 6ft. and my biggest red was 28in on a cajunspin in electric chicken color. ive caught a good deal of 25 in. reds like in my avatar though.

fishing user avataryamisoez reply :

My largest was 35 years ago in Georgia. I went fishing on a stream, under a bridge. I had just arrived in Ga and was to meet some friends to fish during the shad run. I used a really light wright and Mcgill spinning rod, and a yellow doll fly. 2nd cast and low and behold I hooked into a 9 lb 1oz largemouth sow. She was so big that with my light gear I had to walk backward and essentially drag her onto the bank. Wow, what a rush! I've since spent well over $50,000 on bass boats and gear but she's still the biggest... Go figure.

Oh, she was 27 1/2 inches long with a girth of 25 inches. Had her mounted. Now that I'm older I would surely release her.

fishing user avatarCRFisher reply :

I haven't had anything much over 4lbs, but I'm in the Northeast, boatless, and only recently got back into fishing.  Of my the six or seven largest I've caught, over half have been on spoons (1 oz Red and White Daredevl and 1 oz blue and silver Kastmaster), the rest on white yum tubes andgreen pumpkin trick worms.  Every time I throw larger baits (besides spoons) I end up catching dinks.

fishing user avatarBass Junkie reply :

Ok, here ya go. Summer evening, right at dusk. Fishin' with my dad and grandpa. Hadn't caught much, my grandpa two twelve inchers and he missed a nice 'un. My dad had missed one and I didn't have a bite. I make a long cast onto the pads with my Stanley Ribbit Frog in Baby Bass. My dad says somethin' 'bout this bein a last cast, and all of a sunden I get a hit. I just casually set the hook, as this was far from my first toad fish and I have gotten somewhat used to the strikes. Then everything goes nutty. The fish rips to the right, pullin' drag. I fight the thing up to the boat, but now its so dark we can't see. The fish rolls around quite a bit before we net it. So we meausure this thing and its 22.5'', and right AROUND 7 1/2LBS!!! There ya go. Whole story.

WHAT A FISH!!!

fishing user avatarBassin_Fin@tic reply :

^That fish is broad and looks to be about that size. ;)

My biggest was on a chart purple back rapala glass fat rap in the small size believe it or not. 27 inch length and 20.5 girth. No scale,do the math on it.The amazing thing was it was kind of a fluke of a catch. It was post frontal and very cold that day and I wasn't getting bit by anything. Was getting pretty frustrated trying to position my jonboat on a grassline with the 20 mph north winds. I kept dragging grass with my bait then got mad and threw the lure as hard as I could out into the open water and started burning it back like a crazyman just to relieve some frustration, then she hit.It felt like a sack of potatoes and the bait just stopped dead in it's tracks.First thing I thought was it's a catfish so I got a little mad again and just started horsing like crazy. Then she jumped and my heart stopped. I had not yet witnessed in person at that point in my life a fish any larger than probably 7 pounds or so and I was trying to come to grips that that was actually a bass on my line.I never seen anything so huge and was living a dream for a moment.I woke up and I loosened the drag and played her very carefully since I was using braid line and found her just barely hooked in the rubbery part in the corner of her mouth by one single hook which was half straightened out, whew!,that was a close call.I was by myself and in a back pond off the freeway and held onto the fish for a little while in the hopes of seeing another soul who could witness the greatest moment in my fishing life and would have gladly paid anyone to take my picture, but never seen anyone else. It is my worst regret that I will probably never get a hold of another fish even close to as big as that one again in my life and I got no picture or nothing. I'm not big on pictures or bragging rights but every fisherman needs to have some sort of momento of their biggest catch. :-/

My second biggest is in my avatar and was 10.5 also on a rapala crankbait. Dt flat 7 purple back.

All of my biggest fish from around here have been on cranks coincidentally, not large plastics or jigs.

fishing user avatarbroncoboxer reply :

My personal best is the one you see me holding in my avatar.  She weighed in at around 4 pounds on an old spring scale (I didn't have a digital scale at the time).  I caught her with a Zoom Super Fluke.

The fluke's color was watermelon seed.  I had T-Rigged that baby weightless and weedless using a Gamakatsu EWG hook (I think it was 4/0 but I could be wrong).

It was caught in a friend's pond (1 acre or so).  That pond was absolutely choked with weeds.

Myself and a guy I went to school with decided to become partners for a upcoming tournament on East Lake Toho in Fla. Neither one of us had ever fished together and we decided to go fishing on Buck Lake to size each other up. Both of us talked a big game and it was put up or shut up. Mark was a big fan of FLW worms and in the beginning of the day would catch a fish and in a taunting voice say "look Chris FLW baby". As he continued catching these peanut fish and growing his ego we pulled around to a group of docks. One of the docks had a boat cover on it. Mark was in the front of the boat messing with his depth finder. I asked him how deep was it and he said 10 ft deep. I go into my tackle box and pull out a Berkley Frenzy and tie it on. In front of the dock was a lane and on the left was a wall of hydrilla. I made a cast up against the dock along the edge that the owner's boat cut out the weed growth. Mark said " Your not going to catch anything your using the wrong bait." Still ranting his FLW propaganda and still messing with his depth finder the boat drifted and spun. I made my cast to the left ran my bait down about 10 ft from where the weedline ended left of the covered dock and my bait stopped. I said "Mark there's one" Mark was like yeah whatever I said "Mark I got a fish!" about that time Mark looked up and 10 lbs of bass jumped out of the water in front of the boat. Mark said " you didn't tell me you had a pig" .....(Me) " I said I had a fish what did you think I was talking about." After I grabbed the fish I looked up at Mark who was shocked and said "Berkley Frenzy Baby! Screw that FLW crap." priceless..This isn't my largest bass but it meant a lot to me. ;)

My biggest LMB is shown in my avatar - 26" - 7lb 12oz (skinny guy) - caught just last month on a 3/8 oz Roostertail inline spinner thrown on a 6.5' baitcaster with 12lb mono. Pure luck - fishing off the bank and just tossing the spinner blind along the bank - must have conked him on the head and ticked him off and got a reaction bite !

Speaking of luck and inline spinners, I got a 20lb channel cat on a 1/4 oz Roostertail the month before that (September). It was a fun fish because I was using a 5.5' spinning rod with 6lb mono. It was clear water with no cover or other chance of a break-off so I just loosened the drag and let him take line - about 15 minutes to get him on the bank. Between that cat and this bass, I think I've just about used up all my fishing luck for quite a while. But Roostertails (of all things) are certainly now my "confidence baits" !

Biggest LMB was a 10lb 2oz back three years ago pulled out of a local pond on a red and white chatterbait with a red trailer. I was messing around with my buddy chucked it out there on his rod, he reels right hand i reel lefty, and played a trick on him making him think i lost the bait. He failed to fall for it, and i started reeling it in only to feel it snagged on something. I thought d*** there goes a couple bucks, but it then started moving and after an awkward fight reeling with my right hand, i brought a 10lb 2oz up to the dock!

Biggest Cat was a 30lb flathead pulled out of the james river on some cut up bluegill

I caught a 9lb,14oz Largemouth on Sam Rayburn a couple years back on a 5" Senko in color 236. I caught it on August 30th in 8ft of water on the end of a Hydrilla point. I thought it was a bluegill bite a first till I felt it swimming away and when I set the hook, oh lord the fight was on!
