Who is your favorite tackle retailer and why? 2024

fishing user avatarShadcranker reply :

Curious to see who likes what and why?

fishing user avatartkite16 reply :

I'm a big fan of bass pro shops.  Maybe because I'm from Missouri but also because I've never had a problem with them .  I  like cabelas too but Bass Pro always has what I need .   Plus the new Bass Pro opens this Thursday 10 minutes from my house.

My wife and i already made a deal . WE go to Bass Pro every friday night and then I go with her to get groceries. ;)

fishing user avatarDavis reply :

Don't really have any ma and pop stores around me.

Dicks SG is about 45 minutes away from me but it is so much easier to order online and not have to waste the gas.

fishing user avatarba7ss3in reply :

A combination of Tackle Warehouse ( you can see how many is in stock and when a new shipment should arrive)and Bass Pro

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

I tend to favor online retailers the most.

Honestly i don't have any problems with local stores,BPS or cabela's.Usually when i do go to big retailer stores i try to make it a day.I can't seem to walk in and out of the place so easy.

fishing user avatarDean reply :

Cabela's, because of their customer service.

8-)

fishing user avatarPencil Pusher reply :

I voted Bass Pro because I probably buy more from them lately since there is one a few minutes from my house. However, I'm lucky in that Within 30 - 40 minutes I have two Bass Pro's, several Academy's, two good locals (Barlows and Southwestern Parts) and a couple of Dicks. There is also a Cabela's about an hour away. The bait monkey gets a lot of choices around here!!!

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

BPS because of their in-store customer service - not Cabellas for the same reason

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

Cabelas is my favorite.

fishing user avatarGummybear reply :

Cabela's is my favorite but not by choice. I have never been to BPS. :'(

And the trip to cabela's means mall hopping around St.louis for the old lady, because I can not justify a trip just for cabela's. I mean it is a 2hr drive at the least from my house.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

I Voted BPS, but really it's a dead heat btwn BPS and Cabelas.  I've never had the customer service problems others report at BPS, plus I like their name brand baits better than Cabelas name brands...

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Cabelas; I want to get a little more into fishing the fish found in our natural Lakes like Northerns etc. and Cabelas has more of a selection for non bass species. Plus they have a huge  store 38 miles from here

fishing user avatarBassFishingMachine reply :

***, for a few reasons. First there customer service is great, if you have a problem you just call them, and theyll call you back as soon as possible and work it through with you.

Secondly, they ship to you extremely fast, I wait literally 5-7 days and the purchase is at my house, they let you track it and give you a estimate of when its going to arrive that for me has always been correct.

Thirdly, when viewing their products on the website, you can see clearly all the colors, and how they look on each bait, I went to other websites where they show a small color chart that you can barely make out, or the pictures are just so small you can barely see them, or they just have the name of the color listed and nothing more.

Fourth, all their products are organized perfectly for fisherman, softjerk baits, craws, trailers, worms, jigs etc. Its just so easy to find what your looking for.

Fifth, they post videos on their new products, in which they talk about the action of the product what hook to use with it, and just tons of useful information about it, what other tackle website does that.

Sixth, they have great sales daily and not on just products that no one buys like most places, you can get some great deals on your favorite baits, just keep checking the daily sale and you'll see what I mean.

And finally, seventh, *** just seems to have pretty much everything you can think of, yes there are a few baits they don't have, but they have more to offer then most other sites I see.

And for those reasons I love that site, and will only order from other sites if they have a sale thats too good to turn down, or if *** doesn't have the product (which isn't common).

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

No one beats Tackle Warehouse.

fishing user avatarwarmer reply :

my local shop is the place... big fish outfitters lakeland, fl represent... fo sho'

;)

local guys you can call and order bulk and usually will cut you a better deal than any of the other retailers. and even if they couldnt... its hard to beat the personal service.

fishing user avatarBallpark Frank reply :

My local shop, West End Outdoors/BassBuckandDuck, is the best in North Alabama. They carry G.Loomis, Shimano, and Daiwa rods and reels. They have one of the largest selections of Zoom, Yum, Reaction Innovations, Sebile, Booyah, any many others, that I have ever seen. You can also grab refreshments and gas. I stop by every morning on my way to work for a cup of coffee, conversation, and stare at the gear.

I feel you my friend. West End and Waterfront @ Guntersville are two of my three favorites (other one @ Lake Barkley). That's why I voted for "local" shops.

Anyone traveling down I-65 b/w Nashville and B'ham, should make the quick 15 minute detour down 72 to the shop. It's a great one.

fishing user avatarflechero reply :

Sportsman's Warehouse for me.  I live in a small town- 20 minutes to Academy and 40 minutes to Sportsman's.

My 'local' Sportsman's Warehouse has a great fishing section and are almost never out of stuff I want/need.  Except for minor odds and ends, I don't have to buy from another source.  I do get stuff at Academy since they are close but I like to get to SW regularly enough to buy most of my stuff at one big stop.

fishing user avataralger319 reply :

i voted local(im bias of course) because i used to work there and he sponsors me. And he can get me anything from BPS and more for cheaper. 8-)

fishing user avatarbpm2000 reply :

tackle warehouse by a LONGshot is the finest on-line retailer for fishing gear I have come across when considering all factors like selection, information, customer service, etc.

fishing user avatarMALTESE FALCON reply :

I voted BPS because they always have what I want. I would go to the local shop that's less than a mile from my house, but he is a jerk. I've asked him to order things for me and he says it's too much trouble to order small amounts.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

We are fortunate in the greater Richmond, Virginia as we have Green Top just up north from Richmond; Castaways (excellent selection of Zoom products) down south in Chester; and Dance's way down south in Colonial Heights.

Among the three you can probably find what you are looking for.

Then again, we have Gander Mountain up north in just south of Ashland and the new Bass Pro Shop being constructed on I-95 just north of Richmond and Gander Mountain.

I don't care for Peckers although there is one in my back yard at the Stony Point Fashion Park that I walk to or take the neighbor's dog for her walk.  She loves the perfume section of Dillards.

fishing user avatararmesjr reply :

I am lucky enough to be in the same situation as Sam.  Greentop is the one i frequent the most out of the 3.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I voted local for the local tackleshop.

I tend to buy a lot of my stuff at Dicks Sporting Goods but if I want service and basically anything I can't get at Dicks, I go to my local tackleshop.  I'm lucky though.  The shop I go to has just about anything you can imagine.  They have reels from a Barbie rod upto say a Daiwa Steez, rods it's the same thing, and for lures they have more Zoom than BPS, GYCB, Lucky Craft, Megabass, etc. ;)

fishing user avatarJake. reply :

The K & J Bait and Tackle

8-)

fishing user avatarnorm2525 reply :

I wish that we could pick more than one because I like bass pro and I like the local stores too. I like bass pro because when we go up to springfield it like a holiday. It is always the first place we go and my wife likes it as much as I do. The only negative I have about BPS is I will never make another online purchase with them. It was a disaster. Cabelas was a lot better in that regard. Also, more impressed with their catalogs lately than BPS. Lastly, I like the mom and pop places to hang out and pick something up when I am in a pinch.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

Bass Pro Shop, they have the best selection around my area.  They usually have every thing in stock that I am looking for.

fishing user avatargarry77 reply :

BPS because I don't have to con the wife into letting me go because she likes it too. She'll get some shirts or little knick knacks and I'll get my fishing gear.

I get my hunting stuff from cabelas mostly though.Hmmmm.Weird.

fishing user avatarTpayneful reply :

If you are within 50 miles of Richmond Virginia, you HAVE to vote local!  Greentops has the best selection of lures, terminal tackle and tackle around.

Last fall they opened a Gander Mountain close to Greentops and they are building a BPS just a few miles away.  Richmond is going to be in Bait Monkey heaven!

My wife could only find one positive thing to say about the new BPS is..."At least I will get time to myself when you and the boys spend all your time shoping at Bass Pro!"

fishing user avatarcajun1977. reply :

sugi's, located in fukuoka japan

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

Capra's Sporting Goods, Blaine MN.  It's a place you feel welcome in rather than like a statistic.  They have everything I want/need and their customer service is KING.

Yeah, sure I enjoy the trips to Cabela's (my 6 yr old LOVES the place) but I prefer to support the independant with my money.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Tackle Warehouse

fishing user avatarCrankhead reply :

Northern Bass Supply. They are fantastic to work with. They usually have what I want & get it to me very fast.

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

About 25 miles away is a U.S. Bass tackle shop that carries a lot of good stuff.  14 miles away is a small tackle shop that is affiliated with BPS and will order anything you want from their catalog at the same price with no shipping charges ;)  Then there's the satellite shop of the Great Outdoor Store that just opened up down the road from the BPS  affiliate.......life is good.

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

If you have to touch it before you buy it, hands down it would be Greentop Sporting goods for me. It is a hour and a half drive to get to it, but well worth it. Online, Tackle Warehouse has the others beat by a long shot. No B.S to sell, just the good stuff and thats the way I like it!

fishing user avatarCujo reply :

Cabela's because I get a HUGE discount there!  ;)

I use to live near Nashville and went to the BPS often and I really liked that store as well.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

Tackle Warehouse hands down. Free shipping, great selection.

fishing user avatarTin reply :

My local tackle guy.

I had a $600 order from ***.com that contained almost a hundred Terminator Pro Top Secret Jigs. And all came with regular sillicone skirts not the Air Alive skirts like EVERY OTHER terminator jig comes with.  I sent an email and never got a response. >;)

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

I picked Bass Pro Shops because I've had great experiences with them.  Prices are good, shipping is quick, and even when I had a problem with an order getting lost in the mail that WASN'T their fault (federal government mail system's fault actually), they did everything they could to cancel the previous order and ship out another one immediately even before the first one was returned back to them.  Top notch customer service if you ask me.  Plus their products are really nice and they carry a large selection of merchandise.  Only thing I don't like is their brand of spinning rods, the reel locking system is not to my taste.

The others listed to vote on, I have no problems with, just BPS has been the one I have the most experience with.

fishing user avatarcootertom reply :

Simmons Sporting Goods followed by BPS. Nice people at Simmon's and have always treated me nice. Either online or in person.

fishing user avatarshimanogloomis man reply :

cabelas due to the fact of great customer service plus i have a cabelas credit card and u get points which in return is free merchandice.

Close second would be *** because fast delivery and u can see the color of the products better...

bps last two times i ordered from them they didnt have lures or colors i wanted in stock so thats the end of them

fishing user avatarmaxke01 reply :

Ive spent over $500 on Cabelas in the past week. VERY fast shipping and EXCELLENT customer service. Cabelas as a favorite hands down

fishing user avatarBranuss04 reply :

If I don't need it right away, i'll go with tackle warehouse or USACproshop, but if I need it right now, i'll usually head to Sportsmens warehouse which is 5 minutes from my house.

fishing user avatarJKLOCK reply :

Tackle Warehouse is my favorite.  They have free shipping on orders over $50.00, their service is excellent and they have the fastest turn-around on mail orders.  I don't have any local outlets for fishing supplies other than Sportsman's Warehouse;  therefore, most of my purchases are via the internet.

fishing user avatarbass wrangler569 reply :

BPS is my favorite by far. The employees are always knowledgable and helpful.

fishing user avatarFish Man reply :

gander mtn ,well run and has great customer service(at least around here) also its nearby unlike all the other major retailers and unfortunatly there arent many local small shops that are into bass fishing, everything around here is saltwater  ;)

fishing user avatarGitRDoneIke23 reply :

Glad you put Academy up there!!! Usually it get's left out!!! Academy is where I buy 85% of my the other 10% is a store on the way to Galveston....Fishing Tackle Unlimited. the other 5% is split between Cabela's BPS and Gander MTN. Academy get's 85% because they have GREAT prices and are all over the place!!! Also we have one like 15 mins. away from my house!!!

;)

fishing user avatarfourbizz reply :

none of the above. nobody carries everything i need. when someone does, they will be my favorite.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I voted Bass Pro.  I live about 10 minutes from one and I don't like to buy stuff online unless I absolutely cannot find it somewhere else.

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

Local-Dick's, Not the greatest selection but good for the basics. A couple of knowledgeable folks, but what I like best is that I know this young cutie that works the register and she always greets me when I come in.

Online-I just ordered from tackle warehouse. EXTREMELY fast, and I save about $20 on shipping a 7'11" rod. Great service.

fishing user avatarjrhennecke reply :

Locally the Sportsman's Warehouse.  Bass Pro Shops Online and even though they are not a "retailer" you can find good stuff on ebay.

fishing user avatarYakAttack reply :

99% of my stuff comes from online.

Nothing really local that suits my needs or wants.

fishing user avatarHesterIsGod reply :

A combo between BPS, ebay, and a local retailer

fishing user avatarctbassmaster2008 reply :

cabelas because its close to my house 8-)

fishing user avatartritz18 reply :

BPS because they usually have a great selection and decent customer service, but cabelas customer service is better

fishing user avatarrfrazier reply :

*** most def, free shipping and takes two days to arrive.

fishing user avatarbassmaster911 reply :

Local, Dicks, or walmart. I just look around for cheap deals. I can get a Rapal crankbait at my local walmert for under $2. You can also buy generic spinnerbaits for $1 at walmart that work just as well. Dicks somtimes has some cheap lures too.  ;)

fishing user avatarmichbass reply :

As much as I hate to admit it due to some of  the fishing employees lack of knowledge and customer service at local store it is BPS. You can't beat the selection and only 15min away makes a huge difference. Other locals like Gander, Sportmans, and Dicks have a small bass fishing section. At least the ones around here. Cabelas is nice also but closer to an hour away. Long drive, jk. There are several online I like. Not to many local shops around me due to BPS.

fishing user avatarjohnkook73 reply :

Bass Pro... Just love the atmosphere. Cant wait till the one on Hanover, Va opens. It will be about a 30 minute drive.  ;)

fishing user avatarWIII-60 reply :

Reading everyone else's responses made me feel lucky.

I live within 30 minutes from two BPS and a cabelas. Less than 10 from two dick's stores. One a former galyan's.

Ironically, my bank is 45 minutes away.

Hope you are not married.lol It's not too bad mine is pretty understanding as long as she don't see more than one bag or box in a week. :;)

fishing user avatarGummybear reply :

Now I voted for cabela's, only because it is the only place with a good selection that is sorta close.

But I just used tackle warehouse for the first time and I am very happy with my purchase.  I picked up a hybrid terminator and a series 5 sexy shad from strike king. The prices were not to bad either. Just thought I would put that two cents in.

fishing user avatarMark J reply :

I used to order and drive to BPS all the time and Bassbuckandduck as well. Now I order 90% from TW for the best selection.

fishing user avatarBackofHisSkeeter reply :

I voted the local guy Fun-N-Sun Hurst, Texas, they have the best helping attitude and selection- they host tackle shows and Hold Classes and are really knowledgeable. They are the best I have ever seen in a local tackle shop, but if I had to vote for one of the big guys it would be Cabellas.. Just for the amazing customer service I have received ther. The bargain cave is awesome.
