What are types of lures that you use but have never caught fish? I'm talking broad categories like crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, etc...
I keep trying to catch fish on my SPRO little john MD's but they just dont seem to work here in the northwest for me. I did ok on them in the north east but nothing here.
Spinnerbaits with a big ole single colorado blade. I've only used them at night, but I've never gotten a bite on one.
For me, I think frogs were the last of the lures
I've got in active rotation that hadn't caught
me fish - until this year.
Of course there are plenty I've not tried...
Buzzbaits
No wait. Belay my previous response.
Buzzbaits and suspending jerk baits have
been no fishy for me.
None that I can think of.....I have not used blade baits (like the silver buddy) much, even though I should. A lot of dudes whack them on blades in cold water around here............BUT I have used them a little and put a few non-target fish in the boat (yellow perch, and northern pike). I don't know that I have ever used a jigging spoon, or a flutter spoon, but I have caught bass on spoons like the old Johnson Silver Minnow, and Dare devil, so in the general category of "spoons" I am not blanked there either.
I've never caught a fish on a jerkbait. So I don't throw them anymore.
Buzzbaits, just don't work for me.
Alabama rig, maybe because I am not in Alabama . I have changed the baits on it multiple times, so I am guessing that the clear water on my home lake combined with no shad as forage may be contributing to my failure. No bass on my home lake has ever seen a shad, much less a school of them, so I am guessing the A-rig looks like a UFO to them. They will eat 3" swimbaits in bass or bluegill colors when fished individually, but ignore the same baits when bunched together.
I know it sounds ridiculous but I can't catch a fish on a hard jerkbait to save my life.
Swap it for a t-rigged soft plastic jerkbait and I fill the boat. I don't get it.
Im with the other guys, hard jerkbaits. I buy them, i dont use them, and i sure as hell dont catch fish with them lol ive thrown them maybe 5 different days.
Have not caught a thing on the following lures: spinner baits, crank baits, crank baits, rattle traps, poppers, frogs, plastic worms, bass jigs. Essentially the only lures I have caught anything on are: Buzzbaits, beetle spins, panfish assassin jigs. In essence, if it requires much skill to present it properly, I haven't caught a thing on it.

Try fishing them in stained water and days w/less sun penetration. Also a good idea to base colors on conditions along w/forage. Most of my spinnerbait fish come on baits w/a single colorado or turtle blades
Chatterbait and poppers have never worked for me.
Buzzbaits. I have got a grand total of 1 bite and 0 hookup on them.
Every summer I give the frogs a dedicated try, and they still aren't producing anything but infrequent and dramatic blowups for me.
Jerkbaits.
Add me to the buzz baits list. Everytime I read a thread on here about how awesome the buzz bait bite has been, I break them out. Cool noise and ripples, but never had a strike.
When are you guys fishing Buzz Baits? I find a black buzz to be one of the best nightime baits there is! I would say I don't really have trouble catching fish on any baits... the only thing I would say I struggle catching fish w/are unscented plastics (Zoom, Havoc) So I spray them w/scent or don't buy them. I do fine w/scented plastics though.
All of my baits fall within your question one time or another.
The least producing bait is the Jerkbait because we have a small window of opportunity in Virginia for this bait as compared to the other baits that work better during the year.

Chop, throw a buzzbait first thing right before and as the sun comes over the horizon.
You can throw the buzzbait anytime during the day or night but in the early morning I have found it to be more attractive to bass.
Use a trailer hook always.
Set up your baitcaster so that you can start your retrieve just as the bait hits or right before the bait hits the water.
Buzzbait fishing can be a lot of fun and the strikes will startle you as you are no expecting them.
Give it a try again this coming summer and I am sure you will love the buzzbait.
Cant seem to get bights on frogs, buzzbaits, or chatterbaits.
Why would you keep fishing with a lure you don't get strikes? Repeating the same mistake is insanity.
Use lures that work for you and try new lures during a good bite.
Tom
I hate to admit this but I have never caught a fish on a jig. Maybe I didn't use them at the right place or time. It's obvious they work but all I've got was snagged or a bunch of salad back. I've seen my buddy and many others nail them on a jig but not me. Tube jigs on the other hand I stay putting fish in the boat.

After plastics, spinnerbaits have always been my most productive baits.
Even big ole single Colorado blades.
Hootie
Spinnerbaits haven't worked for me yet.
Jerkbaits
Would be easier to list the baits I DO catch fish on.
> Spinnerbaits
> Buzzbaits
> Swimjigs
> Chatterbaits
Honorable Mention
> Frogs - Only because I at least get a lot of missed strikes on the frogs, but no hookups yet.
That is all....so far
But Im ok with this, because it helps me to simplify my gear, and thats what I want.
I'm really suprised at all the buzzbait responses! Definitely my favorite bait, especially for river smallmouth.
Buzzbaits - I always seem to do better on a prop bait than with a buzzbait.
Frogs - 100% hookup ratio, just don't get many strikes.
Kinda surprised at the jerkbait responses, they seem to work really well for me.

Maybe the fish in your area are more lethargic? Are you getting bit on the prop bait when you are pausing it? It could also be a profile thing..
Buzzbaits - I always loose these, and only caught one fish on them this season. Lost the one when I was digging out a backlash, the bait got stuck in submerged timber. Then I lost a Cavitron to a freaking goose at night...
Jerkbaits - I used to always use these and catch tons of fish on them when I was younger on spinning gear, now I can't catch anything on them
Deep Cranks. I fish them all the time in the summer but cant seem to catch anything. Do much better with a big jig

Spinnerbaits are one of my most productive baits as well. Pulled this baby out of the Arkansas River today in 45 degree water with a spinnerbait. You know she's a pretty goodun' if she barely fits in the shot from this angle lol. She was about 4 lbs I'd say. She went 20 inches though. I don't carry a scale anymore. Need to get another one. I'm 6'3 with basketball palming size hands if that helps with the size comparison.
I've only thrown the one's with big colorado blades a few times at night. It's the only bait I could think of.

For me, it isn't insanity, rather a case of unbridled optimism sprinkled with Alzeheimers.
There always seems to be a couple of times per year when conditions match the traditional scenarios for A-rigs. I just know the bass are suspended or feeding on schools of small baitfish, so an A-rig just HAS to work. I incorporate it into the days rotation and by the end of the day, wonder if bass can laugh at ones bait selection.
Tom, you have fished many more SoCal resevoirs than I. In your experience, do you see A-rigs being as an effective tool here on the West Coast as they are in the South & Midwest?
It's nice to hear about lures that don't work for folks for a change, rather than the ones that do. Spinnerbaits work really well for me. I would really like my jigs to be productive but have never caught a fish on one.
Buzzbaits and spinner baits have NEVER caught any fish for me!...

Really nice fish. Now, you are in an area where I usually fail. That's water temperatures below 50 degrees.
Hootie
Never caught anything on poppers, though I usually don't use them, so that is the real reason!

Sounds like a good name for a thread lol. "Baits that you use that don't catch fish in water temps below 50 degrees"
Blade baits like the Silver Buddy and flutter spoons. I understand why they work, I have an idea how to work them, I even have areas where I'm confident they'll work, just never been able to connect the dots and make it happen.
Those jointed rapala minnows, I don't get why but that dog won't hunt. At least I got them on sale.
I know that it's sacrilege around here, but I'll say it anyway...spooks and other similar baits. I get the presentation, I can walk them pretty well, but I catch nothing.
Also, anything that's firetiger colored. The bass around here seem to have an aversion to that color.
Tom
The only lures are the lures that I have not bought. I have caught a fish on every lure I have (not color obviously but style frog, lipless, chatterbait, etc). I am the type to only buy what works for me. Obviously I haven't caught a fish on every soft plastic I have because I use about 15% of what I have.
chatterbaits, but i still keep trying.
Lipless cranks. Caught a few fish from time to time. But never consistently. I think I have trouble with depth control and fish them to fast/shallow
Lipless cranks... Not going to say I never caught a fish on one but definitely not a confidence bait for me at all.
In my regular rotation - Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, Frogs, Flukes, Dropshot, Jerkbaits, Crankbaits, Jigs, Wacky rig...I've caught fish. This is my standard rotation. This season I've taken the skunk off my crankbaits.
I tried the to introduce shaky head in my arsenal more this season, I've yet to catch one. So the shaky head at the moment is my goal for 2015.
Swim Senkos. I don't bother anymore. I know you can catch on them. I won't be, because I don't buy them anymore.

I was never convinced of that. They seemed to have such a tiny speed window, at least for me, that they were nearly unfishable. Too fast and they plane or roll; too slow and there was little/no action. I found them to be too much work trying to get them to do what I wanted.
Buzzbaits and hard body jerkbaits
Chatterbaits and spoons. Surprising since I have had a few decent days on a silver buddy and I see spoons and blade baits as being similar lures, but the only thing I ever hook up with on a spoon is a white bass.
Wow, I can't believe some of these responses. For me it has always been beetle spins. I buy a beetle spin bait about once a year. Now I have a ton of them. I think I have caught about 2 fish on them over the years.
I've given up on those big jigs with weed guards. I caught a few bass in 2013 on them but I used them a lot after soft plastics and the I think I only caught two bass on those jigs the whole season. I don't think I used them any at all in 2014. Probably not going to use them in 2015 either.
I never get bit on a buzzbait anymore, I used to love them as a kid, but I never even try anymore....I like double prop topwaters instead, I still try cause they do catch larger fish, but with all the fishing pressure, I am finding success using lures and colors and sounds, modifications to make all my lures look differrent and so far I like the results....My OCD is kicked in and I love dressing treble hooks now, I actually just did a few Long A's with all 3 hooks dressed, but I had a few strikes this evening while I let it sit for 30 seconds with the front hook dressed up and also red....I am also chaning alot of my last treble hooks for willow blades, and making my rattle traps weedless, or more weedless...Oh, I can't catch fish on the Gunfish, but they look awesome in the box...
You got to be kidding me! That is my all time go to bait. If nothing else is working I throw my ul spinning gear with a beetle spin and it ALWAYS produces...On 12/11/2014 at 6:35 AM, Bankbeater said:Wow, I can't believe some of these responses. Funny how thins work for some and not others.
GO CARDS btw.
Buzzbait is what i have tge most confidence in. T rigs and jigs puzzle me

lol yup, the small pond destroyer = beetlespin
Haha, these replies are very interesting and revealing. As most others have said, I am surprised by some of the posts too. Just goes to show there is no cookie cutter approach to fishing!
Spinnerbaits.....nothing but pike and muskie for 10 years and counting.
I've since made up some custom jobs over Thanksgiving break, smaller profile 7/16oz head with thin wire, changed blades to slim #4 and 3.5 double willows painted white/chartreuse, added trailer hooks, custom skirts to match the blades... gonna give them another shot next season. (I'm trying to unlock the "burning" technique for smallies.)
Spinnerbaits have been my weak point, but I have high hopes for the MegaStrikes (double colorado) I just bought. I landed a nice 1 1/2lber last week but it was the first time I used a trailer with it as well. That maybe what I have been missing. Since my chatterbait only get hit with trailers I put on one and it woked. Bass in my pods are really picky.
The spinnerbait comments are surprising to me as they are my strong point. I caught the 8 lb. pass in my picture on a big colorado spinnerbait a few weeks ago. Everyone has what works for them...
I can remember when there was a time when a lot of baits were like this for me.
Didn't have a jig bite til a nice 2.5lber showed me why they work.
I crossed off Spinnerbaits and Lipless cranks the same day when the fish were nailing them.
Chatterbaits this year when the water was murky and the fish hit them hard.
As of today, I can't remember ever catching one on a buzzbait (maybe when I was a kid and learning how maybe), and the A-rig. No fish on them yet, but I will keep trying because I know they can and will catch fish. Well I'll keep trying the A-rig in certain situations. I may have to force myself to pick up a buzzbait because I would MUCH rather throw a frog.
