I was just thinking today about all the lures I may never try because they are a certain brand name or get a bad rep from a friend, but in reality they might be bass catching machines. What do you guys think are the most underrated lures or brands?
I have found that the Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops brand lures, and plastics generally get a bad rep.
The most underrated lure I think would have to be a beetle spin. My friends will laugh at me when I bass fish with these, but I catch more bass than them.
You'll may not agree with me, but I am curious to hear what you'll think because maybe I could start using lures I thought were bad.
The Slider worm on a Slider Jig fished the way Charlie Brewer intended it to be.
I was taught how to fish on a slider worm, and I haven't used one since, but if it works for ya.
For swimbaits the six inch Storm Kickin' Minnow is way underrated. It catches big bass for me on almost every lake I fish but most who use swimbaits overlook it.
One would have to be Chatterbaits. Seriously, how often do you hear about them..? How many guys do you know that use them regularly..? I've caught more than a few fish on them..
Those silly little pre-rigged Creme worms with the silver spinner blade on them.
Texas Rigged Craw Worms
Curly-Tail Grubs (Though orphaned by anglers, grubs have been spring Killers since Mister Twister)
Johnson Spoon (Incepted in 1920 but still Killer! Always add a trailer for lift, spoon stability & to beef-up profile)
Gambler Big Stick (A high floating shaky worm that never stops moving - Half Worm / Half Tube)
Sizmic Pop'n Toad (May be popped, swam or twitched, and never leaks as do ALL hollow frogs)
Soft Swimbaits (We've caught more bass on soft swimbaits than expensive hard swimbaits)
Owner Sled Head (T-Rig Jig using screw-coil retainer - They're Owner sharp & super weedless)
Owner Type-Z Head (T-Rig Jig using Z-bend offset shank - They're Owner sharp & super weedless)

I've got one of these in my tackle box. Bought it because I thought it would be something a little different. Never got around to using it though. I'm going to have to give it a try. Any secrets to it?

The key is a "Do-Nothing" retrieve, and if you do ANYTHING to the lure, you broke code.
It was originally designed for catching suspended smallmouth bass in Pickwick Lake, AL.

If your life depended on catching a fish:
original Rapala
Not life threatening, but you need to catch a fish:
5" Senko or Fat Ika
If you just want one big fish:
jig & pig or big worm (like a 10" Anaconda)

X2. In my opinion, the Johnson Silver Minnow spoon w/ trailer is WAY underrated.
Tom
All of the "pre-rigged worms". Up here, they're named K&E Worms, but another maker has Kelly's Plow Jockey's. Some are weedless, but most use the open hook variety. They come with a built in bend, and work great when slowly reeled in. Also work when deadsticked without weight, or a simple split shot.
Probably because they work best with a snap swivel to reduce line twist, a lot of tournament fisherman I know avoid them like the plague. But if you walk through the parking lot after a day when the bite was really hard to come by, the guy that has lots of little pieces of weeds all over his carpet is the guy taking home the paycheck.
QuoteThose silly little pre-rigged Creme worms with the silver spinner blade on them.
x2 These things look crazy but it caught me quite a few bass when I first started as well as my first ever bass. Never use them anymore though haha
Focus more on where, when, and why.
the creme worm "refill" package, it is just the worm, no harness.

Johnson Silver minnow with a trailer - always with a trailer
Original Rapala minnow
1/8 oz open jighead with 3 or 4" grub
Heddon Moss Boss
Rebel Buzz'n Frog - looks ridiculous but bass and pike just annihilate it
Here's a few...
4" ringworm, I like this on a Mojo rig great way to get a quick limit.
Ima Flit is in my opinion one of the best suspended jerkbaits out there, another good weapon to add to your arsenal for fans of the Pointer & X Rap.
A nice niche bait for me has been the Sebile Flat shad, a quiet lipless crankbait which is sometimes more effective than the rattling varieties in clear water.
I will also agree with those who brought up prerigged worms, simple but effective. This is a good option for new fisherman.
3" Senko's & Dinger worms impaled on a small 1/16 oz Gopher Tackle mushroom head. This one will bail you out on tough days, great numbers bait and with a small hook more weedless than you would think.
BPS 12" squirmin super worm
Inline spinners.
The Devil's Horse;Crocodile spoon feather Hk,Beetle Spin. And a trusty Hildebrand Yellow colorado, the Norman weedwalker.

Yes, and specifically the Worden's Roostertail in size 1/8 or 1/6 oz. I cannot count the number of times I've pulled in quality bass on a 1/8 oz. Rooster that's more inline with catching bluegills than bass. I never, repeat, NEVER go bass fishing without one tied on and ready to throw.
I've caught more top-water bass on the Heddon Torpedo then everything else in my box combined.
Heddon's X0510 Moss Boss
Creme Lures Little fishy: I swear that it should be up there with grubs in the best fishing lure ever.
Jersey Rig Worms
Blue Fox Vibrax Spinner #3 size
Here you go, Heddon and storm baits.
I think under rated baits tend to be the ones which are not expensive to each persons perception. I would assume most avid anglers in general (this could be a huge assortment) buy quality baits thinking the cheap ones won't produce.
I think any bait can and will catch anything.
Luhr Jensen's Bass Oreno. We have one of the large ones, 5/8 oz., in the frog pattern that, if there's any topwater bite at all, works consistently. It's amazing how such a simple lure can attract big fish.
Oh, I and I agree 100% with everybody who cited the Creme Scoundrel pre-rig. Walmart's ALWAYS got some on the shelf, they never seem to run out.
Little fishie
Mister Twister G grub
Baby Johnny Rattler
Gator Tail worms
Devils horse
CC shad
The walking bait Bandit made spitz
Gay Blade
Rattling Spot Minnow
Most of the G-finish lures
Bagleys spinner shad
Producto paddletail worms
Creme Scoundrel 8" worms
slug-go
Bass assassin's Shad Assassin
Cyberflex flipping Tube
Jerk'n Sam
Salt craw
Rogue
Salad Spoon
Mr.Wiggly
Slap stick

as Chris just said, The Johnny Rattler...that bait was a consistant for me this year, even with a less than ideal topwater season, this bait produced...and not just dinks, I was catching 4 and 5lbers on these, while at the same time I was getting dinks and 1lbers on skinny dippers and senkos. There is something magical about that little lure!
Frog pattern in the J-Rattler is one nasty bait, vicious strikes.
renegade worms

ive caught some of the boggest fish of my life on a beetle spin. in fact my p.b. lmb!
underrated is the hildebrandt snagless sally. if youre not throwing this in tidal water.... why are you there?
The lure I liked was the baby Johnny Rattler in a Jim Pfeffer Florida shiner pattern. Ugly as sin bait that looked like it should be for peacock bass but man it caught fish. Luhr Jensen bought the company and they made some cut backs shame too.
ROOSTERTAIL - These will catch anything anywhere and it's always hidden in my tackle box somewhere.
1/3oz hot orange inline spinner. smallies have no chance!
Mepps Aglia dressed spinners
inline buzzbait
I don't know about underrated everywhere, but around here I am the only person I have seen for the last couple years throwing a jitterbug. I catch fish on it almost every day i go fishing, usually 2-4 fish. I have not seen another angler throwing a jitterbug. I have even had a few comment on my throwing it as they go trolling by; things like, " wow, I haven't seen anyone use a jitterbug for along time" I just smile and wave.
My first jitterbug W/Red never forget it Snagless Sally still owne a few.
I agree 100% with the beetle spin being an underrated lure. I have caught many nice bass with one. I often get laughed at when my buddies see my throwing one.

Iaconelli fishes chatterbaits more than anyone I have ever seen.
Rooster tails
Jitterbug
Tiny torpedo
I have a variety of colors for each. One of favorites to fish with.
wow! great responses. I am still looking up some of the lures I had never heard of or used before (about 80%) ;D thanks for sharing
H&H spinners. Great spinnerbaits with a twin hook.
3" Sassy Shads rigged on an1/4 or 1/8 oz. jighead, superb.
Mann's Augertail worm.
Gene Larew HooDaddys, and Big Bite Baits Kreit Kreatures.
A 3" curly tailed grub on a simple 1/8 oz. jig head. Will catch anything that swims, yet it's been awhile since I've heard anyone talk about using them!

If I had to fish to eat this would be the bait I would choose. They catch just about anything on days when other baits won't work at all. I guess it is just not a challenging bait to use and has never been popular.
BlueStreak I think it's about the latest greatest syndrome, I'm sometimes guilty as charged. I haven't thrown a single tail grub at all the last few years, though they have always been a productive bait in the past. Next year I'm going to back to my roots a bit and fish more of the old school lures.
a personal favorite of mine was the Cabelas Mr. Mean grub.
caught a lot of SMB and walleye with it. wish they still made it!
Hand crafted balsa. Expensive but well worth it.

^^ True. My go to bait is a 3" white curly-tail on a 1/8 oz. hot pink jig head. I've caught everything from Stripers to Crappie with it, including my PB Walleye.

agreed. My fishing partner fishes this a lot. Versatile bait and the price is right. Lose one of these and you are out what, 50 cents?
I would say the Rapala Weedless Spoon. This lure was discontinued a while ago and I find it to be one of the best lures to use on top of the slop.

Was going through my tackle stash today and found several baggies of Mr. Means in both 3" and 4" size. Caught a lot of bass on these back in the 80's, great grub lure. Supposed to imitate a leech I think. Thanks for the reminder. May give 'em a try again on Wednesday.

I too use a curly tailed grub but I pair it with a 1/4 ounce roadrunner head. I use both white and chartruese heads and grubs. Great bait.

Mann's Chug 'N Spit. I've caught quite a few good fish on these. Even had a big catfish hit it once, scared the crap outta me when it hit .

The jitterbug is a far cry from "underrated".
Especially for use after dark, the black J-bug is probably Numero Uno among all surface lures.
Roger
I've fished with and still own most of the lures mentioned, (nice to hear their names again) and would like to add 2 crankbait mfrs. that some of you will remember. Crankbait Corporation's "fingerling series (3/8 to 1.5 oz. deepdivers), and Lazy Ike"s "natural series". Both were made in hard foam and had no rattles. Unfortunately, 1 of about every 3 needed tuning.

Agreed, at least where I am from the first lure someone tells you to put on for topwater is a jitterbug. That bait has been around FOREVER and I don't think it will ever stop catching fish and selling. Definitely not an underrated lure around here, but hey, I don't do much fishing out of state.
