Your Top 3 Jerkbaits? 2024

fishing user avatarTxHawgs reply :

Jerkbaits are my weakest lure in terms of amount of baits. So I need to place an order and what better way to find out the top producing baits instead of waisting money on one's that appeal to me more than the fish lol. Feal free to list more than 3. Oh and your best producing colors for slightly stained water, visibility 3 to 5ft. Thanks guys!

fishing user avatarKtho reply :

I fish water with about your level of clarity. My top 3 in no particular order would be the Megabass Vision 110, 110jr and Luckycraft 65SP. Any baitfish color I've used has worked so no particularly hot colors. Should be getting some Rick Clunns in today and gonna give them a go this week to see how they compare.

I have not fished those, but since you mentioned it I might pick up a couple and try them out. I don't think I've ever used an Evergreen lure that didn't catch fish.

fishing user avatardwardmba reply :

Bomber Long A in Firetiger if the water is a bit dirty. Inexpensive and has been around a long time.

fishing user avatarCranks4fun reply :

I'll be the weird guy here. I rarely throw my Lucky Craft baits and I can't really remember ever having a stellar day with a LC square bill or pointer or their over-priced, poor performing spinnerbait. I love the looks of the pointer 78 in the ghost shad but I am not sure I ever caught a big fish with it. Going to try again this year with my Lucky Crafts. I have had awesome days with the following:

1. Bomber 14 AP -Pro Suspending Model Long A (shorter one, Blue flash/ orange belly)

2. Cultiva (Owner's hardbaits) Ripping minnow - a translucent, shiner color?

3. Smithwith Pro Suspending Rogue (Mark Menendez signature-white/green back)

In no set order.

Honorable mention goes to the Rapala Shadow Rap but it is still too new for me to put in the list. Another goes to the Luck-E-Strike RC STX and I'll include the Storm Twitch Stick, these would be my value picks, very inexpensive but work extremely well.

fishing user avatarWilliam Rossi reply :

LC Pointer 100and Megabass Vision 110. Pointer goes a lil deeper than Mega.

Deep jerks I like the LC Staysee, River2Sea Fetch, and SK KVD Deep.

fishing user avatarprimetime reply :

I fish mostly Floaters, Slow FLoaters, and really shallow suspenders but I pretty much use the following and I fish them all year, and in places most guys use Frogs or flukes as long as I can find a crease in the weeds, wind blowing the emerging weeds on the surface over, or I will literally pitch them into pockets, but I also steer them around weeds, and I fish Jerkbaits ALOT since they can be a Topwater, Crankbait, Swimbait, Suspending Jerkbait, even  slow sinking models work well at times.

1- Every Angler needs to have a few Original Rapala Balsa Minnows (If you read articles many pro's will state they will outfish live shiners on some days, that is rare but true, They are the Senko of hardbaits imo but you need lighter line for best results with balsa..

-F-9 is a good size to have, F-11 is my favorite, but the F-7 is good to have, I would get a Flat Rap as well for a slower float, colder water, basically the balsa version of the shadow rap...9=9mm. Colors usually only need Silver/Blk-Gold/Blk, Clown or firetiger for stained water. I usually just put chart or pink stripe on sides if stained, you can get it off later by sanding.

Bomber Long A 15 Floater- Best Floater for any water color, casting gear, go heavy, most strikes come on pause but waking the long A can be deadly, tournaments are often won by someone Waking a Long A but Fish have to be active feeding on bigger threadfin shad etc. I always paint the back red or pink nail polish to steer it and see if fish swirl or take it under on long casts.

I love the Smithwick Rattling Rogue for stained water in clown or gold/black, not the cheap looking ones, the ones that look like the Mcstick

For suspenders- I fish the husky Jerk, Xrap-Pointer-Rogue-timmy Horton Pro Long A suspender, Countdown rapala sinking version.

Line and action and how you work it matter more than brand imo. Suspenders are much different but floaters work in Florida all year round, or you can get them to slowly float or suspend anyway with adjustments. In Winter lures that sink slowly can work well, so can a slow retrieve, you don't have to always jerk a jerkbait, I learned that a few years ago, fishiing it with a pull, pause or slow roll can work well...

I would invest in some minnow baits for sure. Make sure you have good hooks, and if possible add some tail dressing for more strikes on the pause.

Hope that helps. There are so many good lures available now that there is really not a wrong answer but I think the fact KVD throws Rogues in the cold over his own Jerkbait even though one time it was a 1960's version says Smithwick is pretty good.

I hav so many jerkbaits, but there is one particular bait I turn to, an old JDM Flashminnow115 in MS Am. Shad.  The thing gets bit, and I've never been able to find another.  It was given to me by a friend many years ago.

Flash Pointer comes in a 115 but not the FlashMinnow, the closest would be the 110 in the Minnow.

Explain that to my FlashMinnow 115.  It's over a decade old, and predates the FlashPointer.  The best we could figure out (@Maico1 and I) was it's a JDM, or a Euro DM only.  It's unlike ANY of my locally purchased Flashminnows.

I used to have a Flash minnow that was awesome and I now use a Rapala Max Rap which is similar in depth it runs & action but I think they are hard to find as they stopped making them. I think it was hard for Rapala to get $18 for a Jerkbait.

I think I had the 115, I have been looking for a similar Lucky craft but even on their worldwide webiste I can't seem to figure out which one is similar. Hard to find even on Ebay.

The Max Rap only dives maybe 2-3' but you can run it shallow & it suspends & has similar action. Just a thought.

Update on previous comments above. I said I would give the Lucky Craft pointer more time... I did. I went out to the Elk River (in SW Mo) and fished a 20-25 stretch of rock over gin-clear water about 14 ft deep moving very slowly. I fished for two hours. I saw several smallies under 12 inches and caught just one fish about 14 inches long on that Lucky craft pointer in the ghost shad color. Tried a little drop shot fishing and running some flat cranks but the water was cold and the fish were just not in the mood. I actually put a 2-inch swim bait just inches in front of two different 12 inch bass and jiggled it and they gave no reaction at all. SOOO. A good day with the Lucky Craft I guess. I'm still not selling my other jerkbaits off though. They may have accomplished the same thing. Gonna work with the LC some more though.
