Commiting To The Jig This Year.... 2024

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

Well after having minor success with jigs this winter i have decided to go full out and give them the attention they deserve.  I placed my order with Seibert and am looking forward to getting my 8 jigs in 4 colors and all the same 1/2 oz size and all with the grass head with one of each color being a rattle and one the standard wire tie.

Anyways, just thought i would share :)

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Good Luck ~

Having made the commitment myself a while back, I'm betting that you won't regret it.

A-Jay

fishing user avatarkylek reply :

I am doing the same thing this year.  I have no confidence in them but am keeping one tied on at all times. So far I have been out 2 times with no luck but I am not giving up.

Good luck to you!!

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

I just printed off that order a second ago.  Thank you for the order!!

The colors you ordered are my most popular and some of my favorites!!

If you have any questions at all please ask.  Once the jig becomes part of your arsenal you wont be looking back.

fishing user avatarmnbassman23 reply :

You won't regret it! I did the same thing about 7 years ago and each year I throw them more and more. In return the number of big fish I catch each year keeps growing more and more. The past 3 years my PB has gotten bigger as well, and you guessed it, each one has come on a jig.  Enjoy the ride man!

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

Definitely looking forward to it.  The lakes i fish have a ton of grass and lilly pads usually so i figure i will learn to fish shallow first and then work my way deeper.

I do have to say the main reason i am giving these a good try is because of all the posts on this site around jigs, it also doesn't hurt that my biggest bass of the year caught on New Years day was caught on one too :)

fishing user avatarHawghead reply :

I did the same as well a few years ago when I started using my first baitcaster.  Really really like the jig. You wont regret it.  Stay positive and confident.

fishing user avatarBubbaDirt reply :

One thing i like to do in the pads is throw topwater plastics and if i get a blowup i will follow with a jig..

Best of luck,enjoy!!

fishing user avatarHeavyDluxe reply :

I find myself sitting here, as the sleet and ice fall (again!) in New England, staring droolingly at the Plano box of Siebert jigs that I can't wait to try.

But, I have to wait to try them.  :-/

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Those Sieberg jigs are excellent.

What you have to do is make sure you select the right rod, reel and line that you are comfortable.

I like a 7-foot heavy on a 7:1 baitcaster with 20 pound Big Game line.

The lighter the rod the better but you still need the power to set the hook and pull them out of the weeds, grass, pads, wood, etc. So you have to balance the rod's weight and power so you don't exhaust yourself pitching and flipping that jig all day.

And don't jus throw the jig out and fish it like a plastic worm, Throw it in places that hold fish and don't be afraid to get it hung up. Jiggle it up and down. Slow roll it. Raise it up and let it fall. Try to find openings in the weeds, pads and grass and toss it into those open areas. Learn to "swim" a jig. Bounce it to you then drag it then bounce it making sure you leave it sit for five or ten seconds between movements.

And watch your line.  Keep a finger on the line coming off the baitcaster. Sometimes they pick it up and walk away with your jig and other times they slam it.

If you keep the rod tip low to the water you will improve your hook set ratio. I am sure there is a physics formula for this but it works so who cares?

As for your jigs, you can use fast or slow claws or a one or two tail grub.

And when you rig up your pig be sure to take a plastic worm the same color of your pig or darker, cut off a section and rig it onto your jig's hook first and then add the pig. This will keep the pig from balling up.

Have a good time learning and be ready to lose them at your feet or the boat. For some reason it happens with jig fishing.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

Thanks for the advice.  I currently plan on throwing them on a 7'mhf mojo bass that i feel is actually a little heavier than the rating mated up with a 6.5:1 citica and 50lb braid that doubles as my frog rod.  Now if i fall in love with jig fishing, i may just have to get a more specific set up :)

fishing user avatarTeal reply :

Good stuff Fly, what colors did you order?

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

So here is my order

Black and blue with blue flake head

Okechobee with dark green pumpkin head

Bluegill with watermelon head

Falcon Craw with copperhead head

All are 1/2 oz, grass head and i got one each rattle and one no rattle.

I am still amazed at the prices too...8 custom jigs to my door for under $30....can't beat that.

fishing user avatarTeal reply :

4 of my favorites! If you add PB&J then you got me pegged.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

I actually had those in the running too but i figured 8 was enough for now.....I also did an order with stankxbaitco for their hero craw and sidekick trailers too so within a week or so i should be set :)

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

Now ya got me all fired. I just ordered 8 jigs a couple of weeks ago, and I think I'm gonna order another 10, and some Cosmic Craws. I really fell on love with that brush jig. It fits my lake like a glove. Lots of laydowns, brushpiles, and stumps.

Mike, here I come....lol,

Hootie

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

Well, I just placed my order. 10 jigs and 2 packs of Cosmic Craws. The ball's in your court Mike...lol

Hootie

fishing user avatarComfortably Numb reply :

I also have been using jigs this spring. Best time to learn on them I feels as the fish will bite anything so you get confidence and learn what the bite feels like. I have started with 1/4 oz jigs in shallower water. The lighter jig is ALOT easier to learn on IME.

fishing user avatarjignfule reply :

You have choosen........... wisely.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

Well went out today and while I didn't have my jigs I ordered I did catch about 8 on a swim jig with. 3.5" money minnow as a trailer, no size though. I guess that still counts, right :)

fishing user avatarTeal reply :

Good deal. Size doesnt matter too much with new techniques..its a good way to learn the technique and hook set that works for you with that technique.

I looooooove swimming a jig, i call it the stealth spinner bait.

What colors worked for you today and where were you fishin?

fishing user avatarmtaag3 reply :

I think my next try will be a swim jig. I haven't had hardly any luck and I"m not sure if it's color selection, fishing from shore or what.

BTW, I've seen a white jig in the store. What would this be good for?

fishing user avatarTeal reply :

Imitating shad i would guess.

Ive had more luck with natural colors that match up well with pan fish as far as swimming a jig. The cool thing is that these color combos are good crawfish imitators too. Green pumpkin with orange, pb&j, okeechobee craw..ect..dark brown with light brown and orange... all good things to swim a jig with.

fishing user avatarI.rar reply :

pff, i have zero confidence in jigs. every one ive cast, ive lost to a snag. it maybe because im shore bound and almost all the lakes or canals i fish have very steep, rocky drop offs or im just not meant to fish them, but i have had that technique on the back burner for the longest. i really would love to catch a fish on one but the money ive spend on them just to get snagged doesnt sit well with me.

Not sure what types of trailers you like, BUT if you like Rage craws, the Falcon lake craw looks PERFECT matched with the Falcon craw jig.

Okeechobee, Falcon, black & blue and when he comes out with Bama Craw ( hopefully he does) those will be the only 4 colors I will ever need!!

I was fishing a local lake that's around 75 acres. I was using a SK swim jig in bluegill with a pearl money minnow trailer.

These were the first fish I have ever caught on a swim jig and they definitely hit pretty hard and I was also surprised at how well it came through the thick grass I was fishing.

Teal, check this out.

I was emailing back and forth with Mike trying to come up with a natural looking Bream color. He sent me thispost-11113-0-76259300-1365906003_thumb.j

He said it wasnt quite on his site yet but would be soon. I ordered it on his Elite Swim head and trail it with a Rage Tail Menace in GP. Looks KILLER!

This is my favorite swim style jig. From the head design, skirt color and all the way to the trailer. I use this jig to flip anything where I will be swimming the jig out. If im flipping somethin I want to reach bottom i go for the brush head, otherwise this gets the nod.

All in all it has an incredible panfish profile.

Check the last post I qouted Teal on. The Elite Swim head works Great worked through grass and even thicker stuff! I dont go less than a 1/2 oz with these. Excellent jigs!

fishing user avatarDowneaster2010 reply :

I have been fishing rubber worms and jigs for over 25 years, and in reality rubber worms for almost 40.

It seems everyone has a confidence lure, be it worm, jig or plug.  The only way to get more confidence lures

is to leave your most confident lures home, then you must use others to gain confidence.  Of all my lures

worms and jigs are my all time favorites.

To gain confidence in jigs make sure you put a trailer on the hook.  Years past we used to use Uncle Josh

pork rind, but today there are many different combos that are good.  A jig and pig was with the rind, but

often I like to use a jig and eel, which would be a rubber worm or curly tail on the hook.  Now I like the

craws on the hook.  Plugs will catch a lot of fish, worms will catch a lot and generally a little bigger, and

jigs with a trailer will catch the bigger of those mentioned.  Once confidence in the jig is accepted it will

soon be one of your favorites, especially in cabbage or coon tail.   It took a long time but I have confidence

in 10 or more different bait types.  It certainly help to be able to look at the water and know which one to

use in the given situation.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

PB&J is a must.

You just gotta have it.

Add it to your next order and throw it everywhere.

Here are three of the swim jig fish I caught....all were from the same hole and caught within probably 20-30 minutes.

I went shopping for these Boss Hubs after I saw an earlier post by you A-Jay. The heavier punch weights that allow the addiing of skirts are ok for the mats, but I've been looking for something that allows the use of lighter weights for a long time. This setup has turned my creatures into super creatures. You should see it rigged with the Damiki Monster Miki...sick!

It'll be a rewarding choice. While 1/2 oz. is my go-to jig weight, don't hesitate to mix in some different weights as well. The rate of fall is very important sometimes. I don't often use 3/8 oz. jigs, but 3/4 and 1/4 oz. get plenty of use.

fishing user avatarDiggy reply :

Im still committed. My friend was trying to get me to use senkos today as he was. He was catching many fish, probably about 15.

I caught about 10 fish today on the jig, which is the most Ive ever caught. Real good confidence building day. A few near 4lbs

I will also say that the all terrain tackle football jig has been the best football jig that "I've" uses thus far. I usually get snagged at this lake I fish at within 3 casts. I did end up losing one jig today but after many fish, but at another lake I was fishing in the same area.

I have 10-12 jigs coming from Northstar Custom baits shortly. I cant wait to try those out

fishing user avatarA-Rob reply :

You won't regret it!

I always start with a jig on my flipping/pitching stick and will only change it to a straight shank hook/soft plastic combo if the grass is just so thick I'm picking weeds off it ever cast.'

I love feeling the pop of a bass inhaling a jig!

fishing user avatarCPBassFishing reply :

I recently started fishing jigs and I'm addicted for sure. First time fishing a jig got me a 3 pounder out of a river that I used to only catch dinks on senkos out of. Match the head style to your cover and you'll hardly get hung up IMO.

fishing user avatarjerzeeD reply :

I have decided to give jigs a good run this year myself. I just didn't have $ to throw at a lot of jigs and trailers to start with. Unfortunately my love of Huddleston weedless shads and grass minnows drove me to spend over 100 bucks stocking up on them. I also needed to stock up on lizards and worms for T rigging...Then a new Avid and Purist reel for my Huddlestons....Then some live target cranks...and then. O f%&k it...you see where this is going!

Anyway, I picked up 4 Terminator grass jigs in 1/2 oz. 2 are black with blue and purple in the skirts, and the other 2 are pumpkinseed. Both are high success colors for me on T-rigged plastics. I bought some Trigger X aggression 4" twin tail grubs for trailers. Let's see how this goes. I will be throwing them on a 6'6" St. Croix Premier MH/F with a Pflueger Medalist reel with 15. Lb. P-line CX as the line ( I am a all spinning gear guy).

On a side note, has anyone used Trigger X plastics? I usually stick to Zoom 85% of the time with some Berkeley PB plastics sprinkled in. I was just wondering if this company makes good soft plastic baits.

fishing user avatarJig Meister reply :

JIgs are one of the few baits that have tons of action just sitting in the water. The bass can not resist that alive look the skirt gets when the water fluffs it.

fishing user avatarevinrude reply :

Hello Fishermen, First Post on this forum.

I've been a Bass Club Fisherman for the last 35 years and a Jig and Pork is my go to bait.

I make my own jigs and have found that certain color combinations produce far better than others.

In the spring I like black and green. Summer is black and blue and fall is brown and orange.

ALWAYS fish a jig on a fast breaking shore line or Point. That is: where shallow water meets deeper water in a short distance. That's when a Jig is at it's best.

Also, when night fishing I use a Black and red jig. Again on those fast break shore lines.

hope this helps...............evinrude

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

I think I orderd the same time as you, FF.  Except I got Brush Jigs, and a couple OOMOD Swim Jigs.  Had to get Mike to tie up some 1st Gen Mod Storm Series for me as well. ;)

I think I've only caught 2 fish on jigs.  Both THUMPED it.

Good luck on those, hope to see some fat VA greenies!!

fishing user avatarDiggy reply :

I lost 3 jigs in about 30 mins the other day and missed every fish that hit. I wont be fishing the jigs I ordered there, off the shelf for me at certain locations.

bluegill maybe? I lost my beloved 1/2 oz black/blue hack attack the other day thanks to a hookset into a log because a bluegill nibbled at the trailer. (Got the 3 ticks characteristic of a jig bite.)

They were bass, I just had the drag loosened. I always forget to set it on the 1st cast. Then I loosened it again after trying to free a hang up and for got to set it back...repeat process.

I like that hack attack jig also. I have 1 3/8th oz jig that I wont fish in that spot because I dont want to risk losing it. I save it for the grassy bottom spots.

My jigs came in today......talk about a quick turn around time and great looking jigs for sure, almost to pretty to fish with, almost :)

Anyone have any recommendations on what type of rattles for the rattle band jigs or does it even matter....

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

There are several types for those.  I use the mushroom ones that lock in.  They also make one that has a hook on it that hooks into the little collars instead of the mushroom head.

For me, if the water isnt muddy I probably wouldnt mess with it.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

thanks for the info.  I guess next time i am in the tackle shop i will pick up a few just to have on hand in the old jig box in case the water clarity warrants a little more sound.
