For me it has to be the Fat Ika. I've fished it every which way for three years. Zip. Let the pain begin.
Hey No Way: I fish an Ika Knock off by *** The *; I have a lot of success 'Fishing it the wrong way" I use it on a Evolution 2 jig head, instead of a grub, I had a lot of success fishing it deep this year, the seem to prefer the widder profile on certain days
The other way they work ; Fished ala Road Warrior, bagwards on an EWG hook, next to and dragged across lilly pads, Zel turned me on to this and it works great!
For me : Rattle Trap type baits: I have caught fish with them, I just ain't feeling them! :-/
For me it's the Rapala Original Floater.
Poppers, flukes and suspending jerkbaits.
QuoteFor me it has to be the Fat Ika. I've fished it every which way for three years. Zip. Let the pain begin.
Wow, now thats an unexpected one. The first time I tried the Fat Ika I caught a nice fish on the first cast. It has always produced for me, even when nothing else would. I can't think of a time I tried the Fat Ika and didn't get a fish. It is my 'go-to' bait in the winter especially.
Although- you guys will probably think my 'zero lure' is much more strange. Some of you guys throw them ALL THE TIME, but I have NEVER caught a fish on a lipped crankbait. I finally just took them all out of my tackle box to make room for more jigs and plastics.
I agree with suspending jerkbaits.
I find that lures that don't produce well is usually a result of me not fishing them in the best way, during the best times, or in the best places. I used to feel frogs were useless. Same for jigs, lipless cranks, and shaky heads. Once I was armed with better information and better technique, these tools became top rated weapons along with the rest of the arsenal. My goal lately is to see if I can add chatterbaits to the list. I had decent success with them a few years ago, but now I don't even bother. I'd like to see if I can't change that.
So, to summarize, I guess there isn't anything I think is really "overrated." Maybe Senkos, but I still catch a lot fish on them too.
paddle tail tubes.
I keep my tackle selection to a minimum, so I don't have much stuff that sucks, but......
1. Banjo Minnow (do I need to say more?)
2. Rat-L-Traps
3. Suspending Jerkbaits
Quotepaddle tail tubes.
Paddletail tubes minnows have got to be the #1,along with swim senkos and chatterbaits.
No such thing...
Except the Hover Lure, Flying Lure, Helicopter ect. ect
Chatterbaits...
I actually like the banjo minnow
QuoteFor me it's the Rapala Original Floater.
Plastic worms and the #11 Original Floating Rapala ( silve 01) have been my most productive lures of all time. I caught my first bass on artificals, back in the early 60's on that Rapala and have caught fish on it every since!
For me, chatterbaits.
Falcon
QuoteI agree with suspending jerkbaits.
WHAT!?! Jerkbaits are my go to lures for smallies! Suspending jerkbaits are the only thing I throw in the early spring and fall for smallmouth. If you can't catch em' on jerkbaits you need to pick up a few LC Pointers man!!
as for overated lures, it has to be the chatterbait. Its not that they don't catch fish, but I can't see a single application where they would work any better than a regular spinnerbait
Chatterbaits indeed
Just figuring out how to make them run at first was a challenge, now figuring out where and when to use them is proving to be more of a challenge...
Chatterbaits. Ikas. Gulp. Basstrix-Type Swimbaits.
Pretty much all swimbaits...
For those of you who need to get rid of them now, I will graciously take them off your hands...
GULP!!!!! I have never even seen anyone catch something on this stinky crap. Chatterbaits, swimming Senkos. Also all that gimmick stuff, zip lures, banjo minnows, helicoptor lures, flying lures and the like.
Those that said suspending jerkbaits, PM your address and I will gladly send the shipping fees and take those things off your hands.... To dispose of properly.
Spinnerbaits. I feel like everyone is throwing them and I have never caught a BIG fish on one
QuoteChatterbaits indeedJust figuring out how to make them run at first was a challenge, now figuring out where and when to use them is proving to be more of a challenge...
I thought the same thing at first, didn't catch much at all on chatterbaits. But then I tryed fishing them at dusk/night, black/blue with a black/blue hulagrub trailer. It Worked great. Give the chatterbait another try, buy the original chatterbait in black/blue and use black/blue hulagrubs as a trailer, fish them primarily at dusk/night or in low light conditions. Then see if you still think it doesn't catch. Fish it exactly like you would a spinnerbait.
This thread seems to show that with any lure it's the guy at the end of the line that makes for the success or the failure of a proven lure, 8-)
SENKOS!
burn!
Any infomercial lure aka banjo minnow.
Otherwise my next choices would be chatterbait, jerkbaits, and flukes.
Basstrix Style Swimbaits
Anything I havn't given a fair chance. I find that as soon as I give a bait a fair chance in the correct circumstances, it starts working. Don't give up on those baits talked about before. Except, maybe the banjo and anything with flying in it. ;D :
Tight lines 8-)
Jerkbaits are allways money for me this time of year. But my personal overated lure is senkos probably because I dont work them right.
Huddlestons for sure with the wake jr. a close second!!!!
I wanna say the Paddle Tail/Bass-Trix type baits, but I have gotten so many bites on them, I just can't hook an fish with the darn things!
I would also say the chatterbait, but I haven't fish with it enough to give it a negative review. On my first outing with it, I hooked a fish and the snap connecting the blade to the line broke in half. That to me was a large problem.
Brush Hogs. I can't catch a cold with these things. I'll pop on a GYCB Kreature and wax em!
Muddy is right on. If you think a certain lure sucks, there will be someone here that slays 'em on it! My lure for this catagory would have to be those basstrix-types, but i have never bought or tried them. I wanted to, but just decided not to. How about an overrated color? Sexy shad. If they come out with a sexy shad tube, lizzard, flippin jig, worm, frog, creature, or craw this year i will puke...

I haven't given up yet ;D
I love a good challenge and I will eventually catch fish on it
I am not familiar with a HULA GRUB what is it? where do you get it,is it like a chompers plastic?
1- Lipless cranks- This is odd since I am from Florida...In 18 years of living there I caught one maybe two fish on a rattletrap. I have tried burning them, popping them off of grass, yo-yo ing them, everything, and still can't catch a cold with one.
2- Basstrix style swimbaits. Again, have given them a fair shake on Ketucky lake even when bass are popping schools of shad, and have yet to catch anything on one.
Other than those two evrything else works pretty well for me (especially when I'm not in Iraq )
OH AND I ALMOST FORGOT! Like Senko77 said, the problem with chatterbaits...I have caught a few fish on them and think they are good baits in certain situations BUT I sort of have an aversion to them after having 2 of them break at the clip where you tie it on. They need a better material or stronger wire where you tie on those baits.
QuoteSENKOS!burn!
how not senkos are the perfect bait

Touche'
"Favorite lures" are almost always the best producers. It might have
something to do with time invested in any lure class. I don't care much
for spinnerbaits, but they are Glenn's confidence lures. I know lots of
guys that don't fish jigs...go figure.
I think Muddy summed it up, "it's the guy, not the lure".
8-)

if you like the chatterbait but think its a p.o.s. then get the strike king pure poison. its better built and i think the actions better anyway.
Luck E Strike Bass Magic swimbaits. Just threw a bunch of them in the trash. They stink, and you have to really retrieve the hell out of them to get any sort of action. Big waste of time and money.

If you have any more of these left, send them to me, don't toss away!
They are dynamite up here in the clear weed filled lakes.
Soft jerkbaits also. Send me P.M and we'll work something out.
My least favorite are $30.00 cranks when $5.00 Bombers and Strike King catch just as many fish.
Quotefwiwif you like the chatterbait but think its a p.o.s. then get the strike king pure poison. its better built and i think the actions better anyway.
One of the baits I had snap at the wire was in fact a strike king pure poison. Although I do agree that the action is quite nice on these, I just can't bring myself to use one anymore without the fear of it breaking.
pretty much anything yamamoto besides the senko (my all time favorite soft bait)- the ika, kreature, hula grub, swimming senko- I think are overated for the price, therea re better options in each of those lure classes except for the original senko IMO.
QuoteFor me it's the Rapala Original Floater.
Dude! Let me take you out fishing sometime! The Original Floating Rapala has saved many an otherwise fishless day for me. They may not always produce as well as other lures on any given day but if I were dumped out in the wilderness with only one choice of lures, the floating/diving Rapala would be it.
My most useless lure: Anything out of the 50 cent bargain bin at Walmart. But they do make nice key chains.
I agree, I haven't caught much in the daytime but I don't beleive there is a better nighttime bait, I use a Manns Mosquito Hawk trailer.QuoteQuoteChatterbaits indeedJust figuring out how to make them run at first was a challenge, now figuring out where and when to use them is proving to be more of a challenge...

My bost overrated is a rattletrap.

Try Karu lures Vibrashock, there is no way these things are going to break. They also have a football head jig and the vibration is unreal.
If you guys are having a hard time using chatterbaits and basstrix style swimbaits try using the basstrix bait as a trailer on the chatterbait. It has work wonders for me here in California. For me the most over rated baits are the knock off baits to the Hudds. They just don't swim right at all.
Chatterbaits!!!
Gulp and flukes
Suspending jerkbaits, chatterbaits, and swimbaits.
If I had more confidence in them, I'd use them more often.
I have to agree with Jack, Gulp. I wish I would not have bought that crap.

I've always used Rat-L-Traps in fast moving water and have consistently caught fish on them for years. Not my favorite, but definately a good burner to see if the fish will chase.
My go to bait has always been a 6-8" purple worm for all conditions. Money, baby!
Most overated for me personally has been jigs. But most likely because I'm not working them properly or in the right areas.
I do terribly on jigs, chatterbaits, rattle-traps, and big worms (anything over 7").
Send your suspending jerkbaits my way!
most over rated I have bought and used. Probably have to go with strike king spinnerbaits or ledge busters. Everyone I have had falls apart in no time.
The chatterbait is my go to bait is certain situations. On my annual fishing trip to Alabama me and my cousin catch 10 or more keepers every day over 15 in on a chatterbait. Hold onto your chatterbaits and fish them when you are on a spinnerbait or swim jig bite.
As far as overatted I think its a matter of where you are. I notice most of the selections are picked in places where the conditions are not the best for the lure. Water clarity is a big factor and most of the choices are water clarity related. Jerkbaits, Swimbaits, and several other lures picked require clearer water to work. I can honestly I never had much sucess on a suspending jerkbait because our lakes get muddy in the winter drawdown when the water is cold. Another pick was a rattle trap by someone in California. If you dont fish flatter lowland lakes a rattle trap usually isnt nearly as effective. Lippless cranks excel in flat grassy lakes and you dont fish any then dont use them. Point is most baits are limited by conditions and locations if you only fish one type of lake then you dont need every type of lure there is.
flukes, wiggle warts, sexy shad color
