I have had some baits that others rave about but draw blanks for me.
I have a few Strike King baits that fall into this category, the 1.5 and 2.5 square bills and series 1 cranks just draw zeros for me. On the flipside the mini 3, 1.0 SB, and new shallow SB are winners.
Also drew blanks on the xcite SB which really surprised me.
It is weird how this happens, I give them all a fair shake in conditions where they should excel and with many of my baits that have been epic fails, I have tried multiple baits to verify that I didn't have 1 bait that was just a loser.
Is it us or the bait? Maybe some baits just respond better to our fishing styles?
Lol, basically every crank made. No, I do ok with a kvd 1.0 and 1.5, but after that, I may as well throw it in the back yard.
Some older Daiwa cranks and Speed Traps.
Lipless cranks
DD22 or any deep diver. Prob me and not the baits tho
Original Rat L Trap. Other lipless cranks have produced for me, but I've never caught anything with the original. I gave up on them about ten years ago. I opted for the Hot Spot and the Red Eye Shad and haven't looked back.
The KVD crank....For some reason, I dont catch anything on it, while the world raves about em!
DD22, anything in the DT lineup except the DT4 or DT6 although I no longer buy them because of breakage issues, Rapala Rattlin Rap.
I have not done so well with the spro little john md series. I want them to work really bad but only had a few on one of the five i own. The 2.5 sk square bill is a zero for me as well but the 1.0 and 1.5 are good to go.
For me it's a Beetle Spin. I do much better with a small rooster tail spinnerbait.

Same here....add the DT Fat 3 to the that. It caught me tons of fish, but they are fragile..................which is an undesirable quality of a squarebill.
Smithwick Devil Horse. I've got a few and I want to love them. I love the look and the feel of the balsa and the timelessness of them. Never caught a thing on one
Live Target can not catch a fish on anything Live Target.
Any lipless, rattle trap style lipless crankbait.
Any of the truly Deep Diving lures. Manns 20 foot plus and others . The reason is simple. They dive too deep for the lakes I fish .
I have never had a lot of luck on the red eyed Shad. I've fished them alongside the Rattle Trap and the Trap smoked them .
Wiggle Warts. I know they catch fish but I promise you they are over rated when put in comparison with most modern day crankbaits.
I like buying new stuff just to test it.
Those minnows in the bubble, baitball nada.
Rapala DT series nada.
Berkley cranks look good nada.
I won't toss them away I'll still try them they just don't work where I'm fishing.
FACT at one-time or another each lure does catch fish. I purchased those chopper inline spinners for months caught nothing then one day bingo fish on. Never know.
My older style bomber cranks and rebel BIG CLAW crawfish still rocks.
I've never had much success bass fishing with any crank baits deeper than 4'. Jointed minnows and jitterbug are about the only Crankbaits I mess with.
The DD2, and for whatever reason almost any Rapala crankbait. I have absolutely no confidence In any of them.
Second anything LIVE TARGET!!! Looks great but it repels fish. lol
The KVD crankbaits always seem to break on me.
I never seem to have luck with any Rapala DT cranks, also no lipless crankfor me yet has produced, not one.
Any of you who are wanting to get rid of your DT cranks can send them on over to me!
For my I can't seem to catch anything on a crankbait bigger than a Strike King 5xd. I've even fished places like KY lake and still can't catch fish on bigger than a 5xd.
Depps buzzjet. I have read numerous posts raving about them being so good but mine doesn't catch fish. But I love anything rapala

I've caught a good many bass on these. This one excels in the in the dog days on offshore structure in the 12-18' deep range. It's not my experience that they'll run 22' deep on a cast unless maybe you kneel and reel. Loosen your drag. Stripers will take the back hook right off if you hook up with one, which can happen on structure. These cranks are cheaply made.
I think it varies with the color scheme a lot too...especially where the KVD crank baits are concerned. I have a lot of those all different colors: Yellow Perch, Chartreuse Sexy Shad, Black Back Chartreuse, Tomato Craw, Tennessee Shad, Green Gizzard Shad, Sexy Shad. Of all of them the regular Sexy Shad has worked by far the best for me...I've probably caught about 15 bass with it this year and next up would be the Black Back Chartreuse which I've probably caught about 5 fish on but the rest of them i haven't had any luck with. I use all 1.5's.
Any crankbait at all, I just have no confidence in them.
Reading some magazines made me remember one more bait that is supposed to be money for river smallies. The Cordell Big O. I wore out the bill on one without a single hit, would switch to another crank and bring them in.
I guess I liked them because fish set the hook on themselves with cranks. It didn't require a lot of attention span, sensitivity or skill. Just keep cranking and good things will eventually happen. Getting a good hookset with t-rigs was difficult for me when I was a kid. My dad didn't believe in good equipment, so by the time I knew I had a bite on my fiberglass rod, they were usually off-the-hook.
The Rapala X-Raps. I caught nothing with them.
Storm Arashi Squarebills. I whack the bass on KVD 1.5s and 1.0s but I can't catch a darned thing on an arashi.

Me too man idk what it is but I haven't caught a single bass on one of these.
you've broke dt's too? I've lost 2 small mouth cranking rip rap. Reeled in just a broken off bill of a DT 6 both timesOn 8/12/2015 at 1:34 PM, Bluebasser86 said:DD22, anything in the DT lineup except the DT4 or DT6 although I no longer buy them because of breakage issues, Rapala Rattlin Rap.

At least a dozen, mostly DT 6's.
The Sexy shad color has been an epic fail for me.
Warts. I can get bit on Shad Raps or DTs, but Warts are a no go for me.
Red Eye Shads.
Wow this thread is blowing my mind. For me its the Arashi square bills. Not a fish and I have several sizes and colors. But wow some of the posts on here are mind blowing..
Warts catch fish in cold water for me
DT series do break, they are made from balsa wood... Gotta be careful. They do catch fish tho.
Rattle baits are a deadly weapon in the spring on flats and also again in the fall on flats. Favorite bait for big spring bass...
Bait ball baits looked like a gimick to me from the start so i never bought one lol
For me, it's anything that's firetiger color. Never caught a bass on one. I've got a whole bunch of 'em in a box on the shelf, they've all been used but never caught anything.
Tom

I've caught bass (and stripers) on fire tiger at times. Other times I've watched people catch them on shad colors while I couldn't. For a while, I'd buy a crank in chrome/blue or black, natural pattern and fire tiger. I guess they each cover a specific set of conditions: Overcast, sunny and stained water, respectively. We have permanently stained water in most of SC.

Same here. I've never caught anything on firetiger except maybe a few pike. I don't know why, but Firetiger just doesn't work for me. Put on a perch color though, and I'll fill the livewell.
Fascinating thread. Well.. it ain't the lures. Nearly all mentioned have worked for me. Waters? Conditions? Confidence/concentration?
Warts are tricky. The new ones are mediocre.
The pre rapala warts were also hit and miss. You have to find one with just the right tune and sound.
I watched david walker almost puke as he smacked his 20+ year go to wart against his windshield breaking the bill
storm arashi, ratltraps and red eye shad...big goose eggs.
I can't catch fish with anything Rapala makes. It's a shame too, cause I like the looks of their baits, Any other brand, I can catch them, but Rapala never
Any crank that dives over 6 feet
In general, lipless and square bills. I know, I know whats wrong with me right? Although in all fairness its probably more from lack of fishing them more than anything else. I'm a worm dragger at heart so who knows? I have had success with most rounded style cranks, deep divers and shad raps. I love me some jerk baits too. Go figure.
Strike King xd's. Any lipless. But this is mostly user error lol.
I have to change mine. Warts produced two weeks ago for me.
Livingston Lures for me. I bought 8 or 10 different models when they first hit the market and I have yet to catch a single fish on them. Most have had their batteries go dead so now they are just plan crankbaits, lipless baits and topwater with no sound.
Jerkbaits.....3 years = 1 bass. So yeah, jerkbaits. I can catch them on other things but have a dozen jerkbaits that are in a box I can't catch a fish on. Did I mention I hate jerkbait fishing.
Only lure i ever used that loooked really good but only skeered bluegill away was a dancin eel..never ever caught anything with that back in the 80,s.i can say this though i have caught bass with everything i have ever used.except that dancin eel.and of all lures i have ever seen on clearance they was 50 cents i think and i never even bought them lol.

About the same here. I really have not put enough time into crankbait fishing. The swimjigs, spinnerbaits and dragging lizards/worms/creature baits is hard to put down when they work. I am going to make an effort next year to spend some more time with the cranks and see what happens. I did catch some decent ones this past weekend on xd and dt's.
What's crazy with fire tiger is I have caught fish up here in water you can see bottom in 15 fow on a calm sunny day and in water with 6" of visibility. I think it mimics a little bit pumpkinseed and a bit of perch is why it works so well up here. I always make sure to have one either tied on or on the front deck within easy reach. On 8/19/2015 at 9:04 PM, the reel ess said:I've caught bass (and stripers) on fire tiger at times. As far as perch imitations, nobody really gets them right, so that is why I throw fire tiger so much. One of my favorite perch imitation bait is a Rapala minnow in brook trout.
Crankbaits in the 10' and deeper variety. Try as I might I just can't get bit.
I had 2 DT 6 break right behind the line tie in the same day. On fish, not rocks or cement. Rapala did sendme new ones. After I called and complained. On 8/12/2015 at 1:34 PM, Bluebasser86 said:DD22, anything in the DT lineup except the DT4 or DT6 although I no longer buy them because of breakage issues, Rapala Rattlin Rap.

Try it at night
I posted That I've never done well with sexy shad color . Cant say that anymore . A month ago I caught a bunch stacked up on the end of a point about 12 foot deep with a deep diving Strike King bait in Sexy Shad .
