Just wondering if any of yall still fish the original ribbon tail,or c tail, u tail ect... worms? What is the best time of year to throw them?
My go-to t-rig is a 7" ribbon-tail worm, Culprit, Power Bait, Yum, etc. Brand doesn't seem to make much difference.
Tom
Ya, i fish them
Curl tail, ribbon tail, straight tail, boot tail, Rage Tail, I throw em all
Not many fishing days go by where I don't use one... Learning to fish a true Texas rigged ribbon tail is a good idea for any bass fisherman.
On the same note... They are not usually the hottest lure of the day for me.. but sometimes save me from a skunk and I have caught some nice ones with ribbon tails. Definitely have a place in my box.
10 inch berkley power worms!
Heck yeah I really like the powerworms!! Tequila sunrise is my favorite!

all my life, any time
I use them in finesse presentations. I probably have 20lbs of Yamamoto Pro-Senkos, Kut-Tail worms and curl tail worms, in my boat at all times. I use them on a shakeyhead and dropshot.
I do/will fish 'em on a TX rig, or smaller ribbon tails
on a mojo rig. But TBH I don't fish them too often
anymore. Might should get back into them this year...
Yep. 7", 10", and 12". Its the basic staple of tex rig for me.
Yes, I will fish them anywhere, anytime. Usually weighted:
-7"-10" ribbon tails on a regular texas rig.
-4"-6" curly tails on shakyheads, sliders and other finesse heads, like this owner bullet ultrahead:
I even still fish the 4-6" ones on an open hook jighead occasionally (the classic "jigworm") when the cover is limited to vegetation that isn't too heavy (cabbage especially), ripping them out of the weeds.
A 7.5" Culprit is almost always going to be tied on and ready to go. Very rare is the day when I won't throw that at some point. Last year, my #1 day in terms of number of fish caught were on that rig.
I love fishing curly tail worms! They work well for me early in the year especially. It's one of the first lures I use when I hit my local lake. It's almost cheater once the bass have moved up into the shallower water aND are around cover.
I usually tie on a 3/0 hook with a tungsten bullet weight and either use a 7" Berkley Power Worm or a 6" Big Bite Baits Kreit tail worm.
As for colors, I keep it simple. Watermelon red or green pumpkin always workeep. Sometimes I try other colors for fun too.

I've happily fished both. The Mr Twister Phenom was a GoTo for me years ago, either swum or fished on the fall.
Then there's the ribbontails... That lower photo says it all! Man, my heart is thumping just looking at it. I fish a ribbontail as a swimming worm often. I swim it by cover and ambush spots and inside weed edges and... come to think of it outside weed edges too. I fish them for peri-spawn females, and for post-spawn females, and... gosh, I fish a swimming worm a LOT. It's simply a GoTo. I most often fish it T-rigged with light weight (Brewer Slider Head Pro, or 1/16oz bullet), high in the water column -not bottom-crawling, although they'll work there too like any other worm. Swimming a ribbontail is a big fish producer too, and it doesn't need to be a big worm. I actually like the Mr Twister 6" "grub" -it's actually a worm. See that lower picture? Killer.
@Paul Roberts I'll swim a worm before I'll swim a jig!
A Culprit 10" ribbon tail is one of my favorite summer baits.
@Catt, I'll fish either. I bet I fish a swim-jig and swimming worm more than anything else, all told. Since most of my waters are shallow I often fish a swimming retrieve first, and up high, asking fish to come to me, to see how aggressive they are. If no go, I go deeper (more weight), often still swimming. If no go, I go "reaction". If no go, I start to go vertical.
Another important piece: You gotta boil the tails of those worms. They have to writhe at very slow speed.
Hmmm... dunno how that @ thing works.

Don't forget Cut Tail!
10" ribbon tail worm texas rigged on deep weed edges is probably my #1 producer on hot summer dog days. especialy once the sun comes up and the shallow weed bite dies.
My personal best fish came on a 10" Powerworm.
6 inch Manns Jelly Wigglers . I use to buy them in 100 bags . 1983 , I was at the Manns store at Eufala and bought 6 100 count bags . I dont know if they make them anymore .
Black Grape , Blue and Motor oil . I love to have a bag of motor oil now .

Mann's Jelly Worm was the first worm and only worm I had for years when I first started fishing back in the 70s. I still use them today.

git r done
gambler, culprit, mister twister. all of em are good. and anytime of the year. it's always sunny in florida.
When you think back 30 years or so it's amazing what has happened to plastics in terms of variations, companies etc.. Mann's and Culprit were about all I remember. Now I go into BPS and it's aisle after aisle after aisle.
Like others I've been fishing them my whole life. Various tail versions. A handful of mfg's. Power Worm, Robo Worm, Culprit, Mr. Twister, Manns, BPS and I'm sure others. No one time better for me. I switch up worms much like I do crankbaits. Just try to give them a different look while out.

I've bought 100 bags of the Mr. Twister. Still make them though.
It goes without saying, I love straight-tail worms, ribbon-tail worms,
sickle-tail worms, paddle-tail worms and stick worms.
Most would agree that the plastic worm is a year-round lure
that shine their brightest throughout the summer

Oddly, Manns Jelly Worm was temporarily discontinued, then by popular demand I suppose it's back in production.
A couple years ago I bought a 100-count bag of Jelly Worms in watermelon chartreuse.
In hindsight, it's kind of a washed-out color and I'm sorry I didn't order Black Grape

Watermelon chartreuse has been good for me .
I opt for a curly tail worm when the water gets warm, and a little color to it. From late spring to early fall, if I am throwing a curly tail worm, it's usually a 7" Berkley power worm most days, the 10"er when I am fishing deeper off shore stuff, and a 4"er when the bite is tuff.
I go back to straight tailed worms in colder water, or really clear water.
Mister Twister curl tail worms was my first followed by Flutter Craft worms and still use them. So here is the question of the day; curl tail rigged up or down?
Tom
Zoom Mag II and Dead Ringer worms in the summer.
You can still buy Jelly worms, they can back about 4 or 5 years ago. Bit i like the Netbait C Mac worms-alot more tail and less body for more action!
Zoom Ol' Monsters in black grape and watermelon red candy, or a Netbait C Mac in black grape, redbug, or Okeechobee craw. I mainly fish them when the water gets hot in the summer. I'll also fish little 4" ring worms when I need finesse presentation.
3'' grubs, 5'' grubs, 8'' ribbontails, and 10'' ribbontails all make up a large part of my anywhere, anytime arsenal. We are in the era of senkos and flapping craws, so these ribbon/curly tails don't quite get the attention they deserve!

Bar none, the Ditto Gator Tail was the hottest worm back in the Larry Nixon era,
a time when Stanley Jigs also ruled the roost. I have a hunch that during that same era

Roger
I mostly fish Zoom baits today but back In the day these were my favorites:
1. Rebel Ringworms
2. Bill Norman Snatrix
3. Yum Yum worms; A little history here. Doug Parker started Rable Rouser bait company and as an aside he poured these worms. He eventually sold out the plastic worm division to Yum bait company. They dropped one of the Yum's from yum yum and the rest Is history.
For you Mann's guys and nostalgia:

Yes, I know
Did anyone use auger tails? That's all I used when I started fishing in the 80s. They always caught fish
Power worms and those old mister twister phenom worms in some of the Blues and pinks drive river smallies bat crap crazy.
My all time favourite bass fishing lure. Just thinking about fishing a curly tail worm brings back some awesome boyhood fishing memories.
I will throw a 7" tequilla sunrise on a jig rig occasionally.
I drag a 10-12" worm constantly in the summer.
I still have Black Mann worms from years back too. I throw them but not nearly as much as I use to. I like Culprit too.
The Texas Rig works best with Mann's Jelly Worms.
I need to order more. I'll nearly out.
Josh
Gator Tail has no equal!
Zoom's is nice but not the same "denseness ", if that's the word I'm looking for.
Rebel Ringworm in blue is what I caught my first bass & first limit of bass on Toledo Bend...still throw ringworms today.
Lonnie Stanley what can you say other than legendary!
First to use skirt bands, first to make multi-colored skirts, teamed up with Don Link to invent the silicone and metal flake skirts.

Rolo, I just ordered and received an order from Mann's couple days ago--took the 8" black Augertails and 8" Black Grape Jelly worms with me to fish Big Crooked yesterday and had a very good day using them. Really like the Gambler 7" and Culprit 7.5" worms but I really love the Mann's worms--augertails and jelly worms both--always have good results with both

Catt you are so right-was sad to see the Gator Tail stop being made. Zoom does make a similar worm but it is just not the same as the old Gator Tails
i cant seem to get the zoom gatortail to run true.. always trys to roll over and twist my line.
I just bought 25 more 4" Culprit worms. I just love the action.
