How Do You Store Soft Plastics? 2024

fishing user avatarEccs reply :

Well I have purchased a bunch of Berkley Havoc Craws, and a few D Bomb's  for this upcoming season. Is this a good way to store them? I find it more organized then the bags and I can see the colour and style better, but will I have any problems with storing them like this?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

You'll be fine storing them like that. I prefer to leave mine in the original package and store them in binders or Ziplocks.

X2. I put mine in gallon ziplock bags in original packages and label them by type or brand. Works really well.
fishing user avatarBasshunterJGH reply :

I also have some plastics in Plano boxes though too. Storing them in that will work.

fishing user avataribobpeb reply :

I keep mine in original packaging inside pencil bags. I then keep the pencil bags together using carabiners.

fishing user avatarBaitMonkey1984 reply :

I see one major issue that I am surprised no one else noticed...you have an empty section so go buy more bait! Then go buy another 3700 and repeat the process again and again. Works for me.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

That will work. I keep my most heavily used baits in boxes, and those I use less frequently I in the original packaging in ziplock bags. I'll label those normally by bait type.

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

That's what I do also.

Ideally I would leave them in thier original package if I owned a boat and sift through them, but as a co angler I have to bring what I need.

I have mine labeled and separated by.. Stick, Swim, Frogs, Jig/trailers, Creature...

Mike

i have a fairly large sterilite container i got at walmart and keep em in original bags in there. ill take a cpl packs of worms ,creatures and whatever and put in that little bassmaster tackle bag or a book bag to bring with me for the day

i store mine in origional bag in a labled gallon ziplock. Organized by type - craws, jig chunks, worms etc.

I do keep one bag in top of my favorites, hot now, or confidence plastics. If i go with someone else i usually take only that ziplock to save space. 90% of my plastics fishing comes out of that bag.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

As a bank fisherman this is something struggle with. I occasionaly make it out on a buddy's boat and im building my canoe now. But my soft plastics are always disorganized. I'm gonna try a Plano box for my common go to baits I believe I'm glad Ya posted this.

fishing user avatarBrnnoser6983 reply :

I have a 3600 style soft bag for when I go out. When I leave to go out fishing I just pick out my plastics for the day from my home storage.

At home I have 3 boxes. Two are the Plano pro latch utility storage 3731. These work great for your normal size bags (Havocs, zooms and so on)

My other box I use is a Flambeau 4150 terminal tackle file. This works okay for over sized badge such as 7, 8in and larger worms. I wish there was a better option for the larger, but it works, plus I can add odd packages such add Basstrix with no problem.

When my son wakes up I can take a pick or two.

You can find the above at TW.

fishing user avatardoyle8218 reply :

I store all my plastics in Plano's and make a day box of what I am going to fish that day. I don't carry everything on a trip - just a day box of baits and a few other items.

so I just choose from these and put it in my Bassmaster bag. that way I'm not taking everything.
fishing user avatarMIbassangler30 reply :

I try and store mine in the original packaging. The free bag you get with a bassmaster subscription works perfect. I can fit 30+ packs in it easliy, which is plenty for a day out. Since I primarily bank fish, the bag fits easily into a back pack. One side note; I've really been drawn too the Zman elaztech baits because of their buoyancy, action, and durability. You cannot store these baits loose in a box and/or with other soft plastics or you'll have a big glob of nothing within a couple days.

Same here...i usually take a few packs out to keep handy in my go to deck box

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Do you guys even worry about the scent issue when using a Plano box?

fishing user avatarColdSVT reply :

Guys have been doing it for years with out worring about plano scent

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Oh yeah I honestly don't worry about thwT kinda scent or slime they throw in the bag it's hen ver affected me catching the lil fish I do lol. Maybe I'll give a Plano box a try for quick organized bank fishing

fishing user avatarAlpha Male reply :

I have 2 deep 3700's with all my plastics in the original bag.  will keeping them in the plano directly hurt them ?...No but I like the original bags to keep the scents and juices.

Plano 3731.. works great

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Thanks for model number I'll pick one up and try it!!

fishing user avatarBrnnoser6983 reply :

Yeah. Normal size soft plastics will fit two rows. I have about 26 ish packs per box. Great for stacking, and if you have a lot you can always label the boxes.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Such a great idea I keep mine in the bottom of my back pack. If I grab one of them boxes I can just pull the box out fast and not dig through bags until I find what I want lol

fishing user avatarDocNsanE reply :

I currently keep all my plastics in their original bags and zip tie them together and label the zip tie. But I have over 50 packs of plastics now and it's getting messy. I was thinking of making the switch to plano boxes, possibly the water tight ones with the seals.

I know someone mentioned the zman plastics shouldn't leave the bag, are there any others I should worry about?

you want the 3731 its 3.25" deep. or the 3707 its 2" deep.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Thanks so much the 3707 would probably be perfect for my small back pack then

fishing user avatarA KGB Operative reply :

I've been storing my plastics just like you do for 25 years with no problems.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

I have a 3-ring worm binder that weighs north of five pounds.  I have a field pack that WAS a bank-bag, but is now pretty much all soft plastics.  I have some 'never-out' plastics (Rage Bugs, Senkos, Flukes, etc.) in tackle box and a few more in gear-duffle.  I have rubbermaid drawers and tubs full in the basement.

This is how I roll. One of the bags has craws and creature baits, one has swimbaits and flukes, and the other has my worms.

The box will sometimes bend your plastics if you are keeping them in a compartment that is shorter than they are, but for now I'll take the organization.

fishing user avatarAlpha Male reply :

I have one 3731 full of worms and fluke style baits, the second is craws and creatures (frogs, lizards, and tubes). I also have a 3607 with all of my true finesse baits like vol flasher minnow, miki finesse miki, owner shivertail worm, and squirreltail worms. It might take an extra second to get a bait out but they're organized and I know right where they are. I would guess that between the 3 boxes I have 75+ bags. A plastic for every occasion.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

That's my goal is to get my bank bag trimmed down to productivity and organization

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I store them in there original package till there used. I put the used one in a zip loc bag to be reused. I even save the broken plastics too if they can be used as a trailer. Save those little senkos halves too.

They still work.

I'm not cheap I'm frugal.

Don't mix used plastics with new plastics.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

I usually take a lighter and attempt re melting torn plastics lol

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

Large freezer bags labeled by type/use with original package. Then stuffed in a Flambeau storage box.

Some original packages make it tough to fit like keitech and rage baits

fishing user avatarcurtis9 reply :

I use the Plano speed bags. I keep plastics in the original packages stored in plastic totes. I pull out what I need and put into a bag for the day. Each bag holds about 20 packs. Occasionally I'll take 2 bags.

fishing user avatarAlpha Male reply :

I feel its worth mentioning that I fish from a 16" boat and bring almost all the tackle I have with me. I have a cabelas advanced angler tackle bag size magnum. It holds 16" worth of 3700 series plans and 4 3600 series boxes. There are 6 3771's that are 1.38" thick, i have one 3750 that is 2" thick and 2 of the 3731 that are 3.25" thick. So I use over 1/3rd of my space for plastics. If I were fishing from the bank or even from a kayak i would cut that back to 1/4 of all of it.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

I load the canoe down pretty good but I'm working on scaling back my bank set up big time this has been a great thread

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

I really like these plano 4700 double decker boxes. Six of them get me through a week vacation trip. I do have some extra baits in bags that I store in a larger storage tote with a homemade duct tape divider.

Yeah that post by Master Bait'R made me thoughtful, and I started taking out the stuff I don't use. I managed to fit my soft plastics into three bags instead of four, put 8 or 9 hardbaits into temporary storage, and fit everything into a smaller backpack. My back thanks me!

I've had it work on culprit and jethro ribbon tail worms no problem. Gets me at least the beginning of another trip out of them. I try to be as money conscious as possible I love fishing but I'm borderline cheap due To having a family and Such.

Never thought of this but thats a good idea!

Keep the ones you use most often stocked and loaded in a box but less frequent in the bags

Good idea!

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Well I bought a Plano box today and messed around with my baits some. I just couldn't get them how I wanted to be organized lol. That and the stink of gambler baits not in the sealed bags stunk my garage up instantly lol. So I'm gonna kiss ( keep it simple stupid) and put my bags in a freezer bag in my back pack lol

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

One thing I like about putting baits in a box vs leaving the in bags is that they don't get bent out of shape to the point you need to boil them.  Some baits are more prone to this then others, surprisingly have had issues with zoom finesse worms in the past and some creature baits.  The better grubs also have issues with this.

That said it is time consuming to set them nicely in the box, but for me it is worth it.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

See I ran Into the sliding in the compartments and bunching up when I put the box in my back pack. That's why I'm playing with the freezer bag for the original bag set up im still not satisfied lol. A lot of my creature and beaver baits bunch up bad since I store the box in my pack vertically

Thanks, I just got tired always digging through the bags trying to find the pack I was looking for. When I did find it I'd usually pull it out and tuck it in a in a speed bag so I could find it again easily, but then I'd forget where I put it by the next time I went fishing and I'd be back to digging all over again. This way I know where they are, and I know what I've got and what I need to get and they all stay within reach when I need them.

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

I store mine in plastics planos as well. I find it much more organized. I used to them in boxes but always was digging around looking for a certain bag . Now its oh I need a 10 inch ribbon tail??n  bam there's that box pick my color and we're off!

I store mine vertically as well. the sliding issue can be resolved by putting MORE bags in there  :eyebrows:

I put most of them in a 4 corners system and there is usually some room in the middle for the smaller bags like robo worms.

For those of us who bring bags...

Regarless of the style of bag you have, top or side loading, get the boxes with the horizontal or vertical dividers.

They will lay flat and not bunch up on the end of the divider.

Mike

This was today's attempt. The second I vertically slide it into my back pack everything bunches up bad
