How many people buy there tackleand lures at Walmart and if so what you usually buy?
I'll usually stroll through looking for clearance stuff. Bought about 2 dozen bags of Strike King Rodents for $2 a bag this winter doing that.
Sometimes my Walmart has some really good deals. A few years back they had Cordell 1/2 ounce Super Spots on sale for a dollar a piece. I had the guy behind the counter check the price for me to make sure it was correct.
I check everytime I'm in the store to see if they have any clearance lures. I got probably 20 or 30 different bags of zoom lures in all colors. For 98 cents apiece. And I buy my Gary Yamamoto crankbaits there. They are 2 to 3 dollars cheaper than places like acedemy and gander mountain.
Just bought a spool of Big Game there yesterday .
My local WM is always pretty picked over. I went to a location far from any bodies of water and in a neighborhood where there normally wouldn't be many fishermen and scored a great deal on chatterbaits. Both Strike King and Zman. Filled a plano 3700 with them for $40.
I buy my jitterbugs there. They have the large black with a rattle. That's what my pb came on.
I always check every time that I go to Wally World... I always buy $20.00 or more each time that I go, most are sale items... They make great Christmas gifts for my fishing friends...
I always check for clearance items as well. last fall I got Gami worm hooks that they were clearing out for $1 a pkg
Like Bluebasser86 said their clearance section is fantastic to stock up on baits and tackle at certain times of year.
My Walmart actually has Z-Man Shroomz Jigheads and TRDS so I buy them there.
Other fishing stuff I buy there regularly are:
Yum Dingers
Zoom Flukes
Strike King Ochos
Berkley Trilene XL line
Stren line
Gamakatsu hooks
Eagle Claw hooks
Water Gremlin drop shot sinkers
Arkie jigheads
Johnson Beetlespins
Booyah spinnerbaits
I don't go to walmart specifically to buy baits and lures unless I know they carry something in particular.
I do buy my powerpro braid there, so when I go in for line, I check the baits and lures. If I am at Walmart for any reason I always go check wht they have going on. Sometimes they have the baits and colors I throw, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they have stuff on sale. Mine usually has a bunch of YUM brand baits on clearance. With them being cheap to begin with sometimes you can get bags of of YUM stuff dirt cheap.
Also great prices on Zoom products.
I usually scan the fishing aisle if I'm in Walmart to see if anything I need (or might need) is on sale. In fact, yesterday I picked up a Strike King Jig, Berkley Chigger Craws, and Zoom Lizards for a lot cheaper than I would have paid in Dick's or Bass Pro.
Big box discount stores like Walmart operate on inventory that turns over, if the product is on the self too long it is discounted to clear it out regardless of brands.
I don't shop at Walmart because they eliminate the mom & pop stores that can't compete with the big box stores buying power. So I drive further and pay more so the mom & pop store services and stocks the state of the art type of tackle I like to use.

Wally world has much better prices on GY senkos along with most of the Flukes I use.
I live in a small, community and they employ the "unemployable " and retired vets that could never get a job on mainstreet.
I usually don't buy from Wal-Mart but when we are there I will browse through the bargain bin, sometimes they have packs of Yum craws, dingers and creature baits for $1
I try not to shop at Walmart, but I have to go in occasionally. They're the only place locally that I can find the right filters for my industrial Bunn-o-matic coffee maker. I'll stop the outdoors dept., but I rarely see anything of interest or use.
Regardless of which big box store I enter, I always head over to check out the fishing tackle.
i like those dollar spinners.
ive caught some decent bass on them.
My Wal Mart doesn't have a big selection, but they have the best prices around on Senkos, Ochos, and Zoom plastics.
although i am purchasing more on line these days, i do shop the walmart tackle section whenever i am in there. i also buy my 2 stroke oil and other stuff for the boat from there. there was a time when we had some local tackle shops around here, and i live 10 minutes from the lake, but those days are pretty much gone. walmart carries my zoom worms, i bought 4 shock rods on sale for what bps charges for one. spools of big game and my renegade polarized bifocals came from there too.
I check Walmart first. If they don't have what I want, I head to Field and Stream. My Walmart carries Booyah pad crashers, Field and Stream doesn't for some reason.
I always check, buy Senkos and occasionally spools of Power Pro.

Sounds like competition to me. You value something other than strictly price and your mom and pop fills that role. Free market my friend.
Make sure you compare the number of baits in the soft plastic bags because they have bags that come with less than normal amount so it looks like a great deal when in reality it isn't.

The problem is the mom & pop tackle stores can't compete with big box stores on everyday tackle needs and go out of business losing the value they offered. I use custom hand poured local soft plastics and hand made low production lures like swimbaits for example. Without the mom & pop tackle stores those products dissapear before they can grow into mainstream lures. It is a free market system trying to compete with low cost imported products. Another comparison is brick and motar trying to compete with online, we all end up with mass produced products and lose enovation. All I can do is slow down the process by supporting small business.

Our Wally World has less tackle than I have in one tackle box!
Walmart use to sell Renegade lures which were very productive. Their 6" curl tail worm in black with silver "dust" glitter was deadly at night.

The Renegade craw was a favorite of mine .

^ dis guy is impostter. me real bait monkee. you buyz them nice stuff from reel storz.
The Wal-Mart where I live tackle selection is a joke period.
I do all my tackle shopping at the lil bait shop in zwolle or I go to Toledo town tackle, I can always find what I want at those two places.
I have shooed for stuff at Wal-Mart but that is mostly at the end of winter when they put all the zoom plastics on sale for .50 cents a bag, it hit them up and clear out the worms, lizards and brush hogs in the sizes and colors I use.
The only thing I have bought in the last several years at Walmart are Rebel bait company related baits or ball caps. I buy all my tackle at a local marine and tackle shop. I might pay a little more but those guys will get me anything I want and or need and are good salt of the Earth folks. They get ALL my business except for jigs and shakeyheads.
They have a ok selection of senkos and other plastic worms.
Usually I just walk through and see what they have that's new.
They have all the good basic things to get u started.
I bought a ton of clearance terminal tackle and zoom soft plastic during the sell off, but that's about all they have that I'm interested in. There's only a DSG within half an hour of me, 1 nice tackle store and academy is an hour away. I do most of my buying online unless we are going to be somewhere near one of the stores.
Every time I check my local WalMart I am disappointed. They have a sparse stock of tackle to begin with, and the clearance prices aren't much less than regular. I've pretty much given up on that place.
Lately haven't bought anything due to funds. And been busy with family. Hopefully I can find some time to go fishing
In my neck of the woods Wal-Mart was a good place to get some good stuff from rods to plastics back in the nineties. Berkley Lighting rods were sold with a great demand for them. Caught many a bass on the Renegade Tequila Sunrise twirl tail worm 6 inches. Academy came to town and things changed. Small guys are gone. Last time I was in a Wal-Mart fishing section it was in disarray & disorganized with a lousy selection. Things change. And the beat goes on...
I buy most my stuff at walmart. They have everything i use. Senkos, christie craws and zoom lizards and pad crashers. 90% of my fishing consists of these lures. Only thing i dont buy there is terminal tackle
Where I live near Atlanta there are few alternatives within easy driving distance.
A couple of small tackle retailers and some big box stores that specialize in outdoors sports, but urban and suburban traffic make getting there a special mission based on the patterns I travel.
There are countless Walmarts and Dicks Sporting Goods in our area. Whatever you might feel about these stores, frankly they are the only practical options given time constraints. On the positive side, they carry many of the "standard" baits that enthusiast anglers like me use, at good prices. For example, senkos and dingers, gama hooks, and Rapala minnows. Some stores are well-stocked and tailored to the needs of the community. Some are poorly stocked and get little turnover. On the other hand, these stores may have excellent finds, one of them carries a full selection of War Eagle Spinnerbaits. They have very good prices during their frequent clearance sales.
A bit of a plug for sponsor Yum: Walmart stores often have Yum bait boxes on the bottom shelf. They sell partial packs of Yum lures of various types at standard $1.98 pricing. This is a good way to try something new if you like Yum baits. Occasionally these go on sale and are deeply discounted. They sometimes contain full, regular retail bags of their lures labeled for the bait boxes; this season I have picked up various craws and dingers in that category. The selection ranges from absolutely standard (green pumpkin dingers) to relatively rare but excellent baits (vibra king tubes and mighty bugs).
Any store I walk into, it is in the back of my mind to notice if there is any fishing tackle or gear there. I'm getting to the place where I can't drive by a pawn shop without going in and looking at available fishing gear. In my spawn shop experiences, guys very seldom pawn quality fishing gear - I haven't found any decent gear that I'd consider buying, but that isn't any reason to stop looking.
Back to Walmart, I'm in Walmart for one reason or another at least once per week. I'm gonna stroll through the fishing department, " just to see". Currently, the Walmart in Excelsior Springs & Richmond have the 3600 size Plano boxes for $@.88 each. I have a modest supply of back up boxes now and over time I will get rid of the old style latches and change over to the "pro style" latches. On another front, in their jig head rack look for Arkie DeD Stand up finesse jig heads. 1/16 oz Mushroom head with a bait keeper and the correct size hook for Ned Rigs. Roughly 60 cents per jig head. Not exactly cheap, but more or less affordable.

Probably won't ever get your money's worth out of it. Unless the pawn shop guys fish, for all the know they can go down to Walmart and buy a St.Croix or whatever, unless a guy fishes and is into it beyond thinking all rods and reels are the same they probably just won't know.
I do shop for tackle at Walmart if I am already there.
If I am going just to buy tackle, I will go to Cabelas or Bass Pro.
the service and selection is usually much better and the prices are not that much different.
Wal-Mart sells Zoom Grubs and they are only 98 cents. It's the only place in town that sells em and they have such wicked tail action
Many moons ago the walmart in Killeen Texas had a sporting goods manager who actually listened to the local guys and stocked stuff they could sell. Back then Allstar rods were one of the top of the line sellers. Shimano reels, plastics, hard baits. You name it they had it. Now days, as many have mentioned, the selection is crap but do occasionally have some deals.
Considering I live within 10 miles of 3 Academy stores and Bass Pro is only 6 miles away, I don't spend much there at all.
I grew up in a small town without a Walmart. The local Mom and Pop stores carried worms, minnows, Zebco, Eagle Claw hooks and crappie jigs. Not much in Bass lures except occasional packs of worms. Walmart came and went. The Walmart where I live now has PowerPro line, Seagar, Spiderwire, Pfluger and Lews reels, albeit lower end, Abu Garcia, Mitchell , as well as Gammy, Eagle Claw and Trokar, plus Yum, Zoom, Rebeland Arbogast. Wide variety. Even some Rage Tail. Yeah, I shop there, and Dicks, Academy and BPS. I shop there while we buy groceries and supplies.

I was shocked when I saw Rage Tail at my local Walmart. I had to do a double take.

caught my pb on a 6" Renegade curl tail, in fall pumpkin pepper, in September of '98.
If I have a mom and pop option, I would go there first. Big boxes are a last resort for anything, for me. Same goes eating out. Always local for me, I wont even consider a chain.
I buy senkos, SK rodents, and a lot of zoom soft plactics.
I live really close to a BPS, Cabelas, and Academy Sports, and Dicks, so Walmart is far down on the list. If I'm ever in there for groceries with the wife I usually head to the fishing aisle and pick up some soft plastics on sale.
There's no reason why a bag of Zoom soft plastics from Walmart would be any different than the same bag at Bass Pro IMO....

I agree. To be on the safe side though check the amount of bait in each bag. I have seen shorts a few times as some like to take a few out of one bag and add them to the bag they are buying.
I scored a Veritas 2.0 rod for $14.99 and a Skeet Reese rod for $9.96 they clearanced them out but put the wrong stickers on them. I also bought all my Zman chatterbaits and Palmetto Bugz for $1.49 each for all of them. I always check my local Wal-Mart when I go in.

That little worm was deadly. ?
Called it my do nothing worm!
Nothing fancy just caught fish...big fish!

This was a topic in my last club meeting. It seemed like when Wal-Mart first became the main sponsor of FLW they overhauled their fishing selction and stocked the stuff anglers wanted. I purchased a few Revo SX reel from there. The Wal-Mart by me would even show FLW events on their display TVs. But as time went on the tackle dwindled and is back to next to nothing unless you wanna drown some worms.
I was going to each town that had a Walmart to look for discounted fishing stuff. Every Walmart stocks different fishing stuff. The Best Buy's follow the holidays in January to when they restock for springtime. Just stay looking.
Hank Parker story,,
it was February and I'm watching Hank fish that big lake in NH. He's using a manns baby 1 crankbait in brown craw. It was snowing out but I was destined to buy that lure it worked so well for smallies on the show. I went down to Walmart and bought the whole rack of them. I found this lure was just as hot for me too. I gave one to each family member.
Fishing stuff at Walmarts must not be created equal. The Wally Worlds near me suck for the most part. The only positives of there the last few years have been.
* buying my grandsons different items for trout fishing. The best for them. Do like that selection.
* they had clearance on some Garcia, Berkley and some Sheakspear rods at the end of winter. I bought about a dozen of them and the guys at work sucked them right up. $9.00-$15.00 ea. Ok rods but just not for my liking.
* I've pulled off quite a few Rat-L-Traps and Rattling Spots for $1.00-$2.00. Can never have enough Traps. Great lure.
* I was able to get (2) Falcon Bucoo Rods for $40.00 each. Nice rods.
I buy my live bait and some things at the local tackle but I scrounge deals no matter what or where. Flea markets Ive seen many cabelas, gander mtn, and wally clearance resellers. This year I got braid for 5 flouro for 3 and hank p spin combos for 10 just yesterday.
Walmart here is sort of hit or miss... I've bought a few things there, but they really don't seem to have much of what I look for. I have the Cabela's headquarters store less than an hour away, so maybe they don't feel that there is a market for fishing gear at Wally World.
I buy things like Trilene XL, no game, power pro, spinnerbaits, pop-rs, the occasional frog. I actually like the ewg super line eagle claw worm hooks. They come 12 in a pack for about $4. American made too. Other items include oil for the truck and boat, fishing hat after mine blows out of the boat, polarized sunglasses (Renegade IKE). I'm fishin on a budget what can I say.
