So when does everyone official fishing season start? Here in NY it April 1 and bass season doesn’t open for keep till the third Saturday in June. How much does every one spend to get ready for there upcoming season? I’m already out about $300 and that just the basics, lines, terminal tackle, lures. Might even buy a new rod or reel too.
I stay stocked up throughout the year. I only replenish so rarely do I spend over $100 in tackle at a time. Unless it's a rod or reel. We don't have a season here and this is the first year in 3 years that we had solid ice.
I have a feeling I’m on the lighter end of the spectrum, here. So far $150 on a new rod, $175 on a new reel, and probably $250-300 on tackle/line/etc.
Probably about five grand this year still. I'm still testing rods and lures. All of my confidence baits will set untouched. The orders will still be placed but saved for the bass boat I am buying spring of 2019.
lately a little more than i should be but glide baits are fun
I always try to spend $0 because I have more than enough stuff. Usually end up spending $25 here and there
Southern boy here... season never ends!
Since January 1 maybe $50 & $30 of that was a gift card from Dick's Sporting Goods I got for my birthday.
I've probably spent about $150 from gift cards on new line, replacement hooks, and other small stuff.
The long winters here can wreck havoc on one's disposable income; especially if you're retired & it's fixed !
Let's just say that I may be approaching the National Deficit ~
The Bait Monkey is real.

Another Southern boy here who fishes all year.
Maybe 50.00-75.00.
But Between all the gift cards I get for Christmas and birthday from family and friends, it's been years since I've spent my own money on anything.
Mike
way too much.lol but then ive rebuilt my trailer this year and am replacing 4 stradics that are 10 plus years old with new ones so that gets expensive. as far as lures and such not too much. just restocked what I went through last year. added a few new things to experiment with but not a lot. maybe $200
I've spent about 100 dollars this winter . Unless I find a heck of a clearance deal on a rod or reel I'm probably done .
Bought 2 new spinning rods in bargain cave at Cabelas with x-mas gift cards. Just bought two new bait casting rods (buy on get one free) for $117. That is the only gear so far. In spring it usually costs me $50 to put new line on and about $80 to buy licenses in 2 states. After 13 years with old boat, I bought a new one this year, so I guess you could say A LOT this year.
Don't keep track.
Not really all that much so far. Replenished some Zoom, Roboworm and Charlie Brewer stuff. I have a few jerkbaits coming. I don't really need anything.
I want to put a Tatula or Revo on a Avid X I bought late last season. Not pulling the trigger on that until I get some type of discount promo type thing or something. BPS has a reel trade in thing coming up soon I believe.
I'm doing a trip to Lake Ontario this year. My current trailer tires are fine but something is telling me to put a set of radials on. More of a piece of mind thing. I fly solo for the most part and getting a bit of pressure to get a manual/auto mustang vest. But my current best is fine but wife and friends know I don't wear it all the time.
Trying hard to cut back spending on gear severely.
Some good advice on the forum has been to learn to use what you have, and I have a long way to go to accomplish that.
Its hard to resist the really amazing deals out there over the past couple of winters on standard-issue tackle: shad raps and senko packs for $2.50 each (if you buy 10!), Bandit and Norman lures for $2 at Walmart, etc.
I've gone overboard for the rate of consumption and usage, and my goal for 2018 is to spend less time on tackle and more time on using it.
I don't know what I have spent so far, but I come to agreement with my wife that from now on I'll have 50 bucks to spend each month on fishing gears. If I don't spend this will accumulate to next month. Also this budget not include other stuffs like cloths hat and shoe.
i hope I can keep in the budget.
I am always "that guy" when it comes to not wanting to spend money on fishing. I am always the, it's almost as good as that one and it's 2 bucks cheaper. That being said, I am "gearing up" for a trip this spring and I spent $20 bucks on two spinning combos on clearance at Walmart, not the best, but surprisingly usable. Also, I got a couple of new baits for my birthday. I am also heading to BPS this Monday to grab some of the 5 for $10 Booyah Spinners, and I am finally going to actually buy the actual "rage claw" plastic trailers for my jigs. So I would say all-in-all I usually don't break $100 each year. But that is just the cheapskate in me!!
For this coming season I have purchased a lot of fishing gear (Rods, reels, lines, terminal tackle and lures) between November and now. That's because this will be my first full fishing season where I have a kayak.
I have had to upgrade my arsenal as I found things that work and didn't work fishing from a sit-in. I am a frugal shopper and almost everything I bought was a sale or clearance item. In the end I spent between $400-500 dollars total.
I am around the $1,500 mark. I bought a Helix 10 last month, so that is a huge chunk of it. Other than that I just re stocked on my main baits, and grabbed all my line and hooks. Miscellaneous stuff like non piercing cull tags, megastrike, G Juice, some JJs.
$5 on a clearance lure here and there. This winter I sold a marcum and bought a striker 5 for the boat/ice. Bait monkey only gets me if it's a rod and reel that's super cheap....and even then I can honestly say i have a good control on him. Hasn't always been that way but I spent thousands this summer on fishing stuff. Totally worth it:)
No fishing seasons here but I do have to wait for ice out. So far I'm at about $80 spent on tackle and a reel. Not too bad. Still have some big purchases coming up for my kayak though, like a new lithium battery and a truck bed extender to haul it.
I'm around $300. Most of that (all but like $60) was at Mud Hole. Took the plunge into trying my hand at building my own rods
Very little...maybe $50 since Thanksgiving....mostly blade baits. But, its about to get started. I don't spend much in the off-season. No need - I'm the guy that loses one lure and within a half hour of being home, I've ordered three more....just in case. Had a nice day a few weeks ago and lost two blade baits in one wind-shortened outing. I've gotten no less than six since then...just in case
On actual fishing tackle like lures, line, rods or reels, nothing. I did buy a boat which was over $10,000

You've got "connections." I need to work on that.
I have a 12 year old kiddo whom I indulge with some on-sale items every now and again but not a lot (and he uses his own money too). And I do "hover" around our local Field & Stream for sales but rarely do I buy anything at regular price. I think this winter I've spent 50 or 60 dollars. At this time last year, I probably spent twice that amount so I'm doing pretty good. I DID have an anchor bounce around and break my crankbait rod in my boat last fall so I may have to remedy that.......
I'm like A-Jay, retired and a fixed income. I stocked up well before retirement. I still want one more spinning rod. The remainder will be consumables as needed. Minus the rod, I would be surprised if I spend over a hundred bucks all year.
Since it turned really cold I've only bought 2 reels and have one rod on the way. Oh, and $220 of odds and ends, like replacement spinnerbaits, line, a rod protector, a couple of crankbaits, etc.
Of course, I did save up a little before I bought the Steez sv tws and Metanium MGL and ordered the Conquest casting rod. I've survived 5 years of retirement, so I'm celebrating a little. I hope I don't like this expensive stuff too much.

Bad move! They will multiply, I guarantee it. I thought I was good having chronarchs, until I got a metanium last season. Now I have 3...
Just like every season...too much
Most of my purchases for this season have not been specifically fishing related actually. I stocked up on a bunch of sun gear, some safety gear for my kayak, including a new PFD.
So far, this year - about $40 for some line and a few Panter Martin spinners for a trout fishing trip this summer.
I've got enough bass tackle to last me for the rest of my life.
That's no reason not to buy more, though.
Tom
I've bought a few things like:
-Pfleuger President spinning combo for $50 from Cabela's.
-Power Pro for that setup.
-Two Siebert Outdoors orders for around maybe $70 total including jigs and Ned rig stuff.
-I picked up a couple of the H2O Express jerkbaits.
-Wal-Mart had Rage Craws on clearance so I've picked up a few packs of those.
-A couple of Plano boxes.
-Some tungsten from OM Fishing Sinkers.
So probably less than $200. I've been trying to control myself with plastics because I have plenty. Just going to try to use what I have, for now.
Only $75 so far this year on gear, just a small order to megastrike and a small handful of lures from a brief stopover at BPS on the way back from Chicago. I'll probably do another purchase for line and terminal tackle as I get closer to May, (I don't get to fish much at all before then), but I haven't really felt the itch recently to do any big purchases for lures or rods/reels.
However, i have made some additions to my bass fishing home library for some winter reading. These, plus a few more on the way:
I figure that has to count for "getting ready for the season", too.
Do fishing trips to distant destinations count ?
A-Jay
I used to hunt a lot (still do some) and thought that was expensive. Now I realize it is nowhere near the expense of fishing. Maybe that is because of my lack of self control. Seems I’m always wanting to piddle around with my boat. Had to replace some switches and while doing that was looking for another fish finder. Happened across a gen 1 Helix 10 di from Cabela’s for $539 (they sold out within the day). I couldn’t pass that up. Also got a Tatula sv103 and of course needed a rod to go with it. I now understand the problem with the bait monkey ????.
Not enough
Lets see, in last three months, new Garmin 73cv, 2 new rods, Misc. stuff from TW at Black Friday sale, 300 on boat repair, New steering wheel for boat (yea, I know), just got in an order of $115 worth of crankbaits, 6 reels cleaned, probably some more if I think real hard. That's what a bad winter will do to you.
I don't remember, and if I could I wouldn't say, because it is classified information. I will say the bait monkey has my numbe,. knows where I live, follows me home from work, and I can't prove it, but I'm sure he has hacked into my bank account.
Well the "season" starts for me usually mid April. As soon as the water is safe enough (especially the rivers) I head out.
I'm in about $200 already. Got a new reel and a few new topwaters. Still need a heavy action rod for the reel, line for three of my setups and a bunch of new lures. Basically another $300 is what I'm expecting to spend, so call it $500 all day. This isn't a normal year though. I just wanted a new frog rod/reel

Right with you .... but there’s a reason TW’s free shipping starts at $50.....

They better not. Going on a vacation and finding time to fish, like nine hours a day is different. Right ?
Well in lures about 100....mostly restocking soft plaatics
Nees to replace rod and reel so an extra 300
And getting powerpole micro so 600.
More than i would typically at start of season
Have already spent $150 on lures and line. Another $300 coming up on a rod or two. I'm considering putting a deck on my Sun Dolphin Sportsman and getting a trailer for, so there's another potential $400 or so. Then the typical $20 here and there to restock what I use.

I've never once spent less than $50 at TW, the goal is always free shipping ????

Amen to that ... ????
New custom rod from Mike at DVT. 360 plus shipping. New Chonarch MGL 151 XG for 250. 250 for terminal tackle and line. Now just for a swimbait order and a few plastics.
I spend about $20 a week on live bait. Fat Heads and Sucker minnows are my bait of choice, Having found a pawn shop and a Salvation Army that have been liquidating bait shops for years in Minnesota, and sell new rods and reals for next to nothing. I have $1500.00 of UN-opened tackle that makes Dicks Sporting Goods happy but their $2.99 long billed Gary Yamamoto Chikara Crankbaits have caught me more fish than anything else except live bait.
About 500 this winter for bass gear. Got my first 2 baitcasters, lures, line, terminal tackle, spinnerbait box. But hopefully I'm set for the next 18 months other than maybe a bag or two of soft plastics i may run out of. I'm sure I'll find somethin to buy lol. Now I just got to make sure my crappie gear, catfish gear, white bass and sauger gear Is fully stocked up lol. Gotta love fishing
Too Much !
but I always sell my items first on forums/ebay. Then I start looking for the next good deals
New Ultrex, 4 new Kistler Rods. New GoreTex bibs. Geez, that adds up in a hurry.
I need to stop. Bought a good bit of Crappie stuff, plus about $100 worth of bass lures in the past 2 months. Bought some used rods and reels at a bargain for another $150.
"I've never once spent less than $50 at TW"
This last time I put together an order of things I needed in the shopping cart and the total was $105. A few days went by while I thought about it, celebrated Valentine's Day, etc.
When I got back to it to actually make the order the shopping cart was empty. Okay, I took my time and tried to remember precisely what it was that I needed in the way of replacement baits and line.
This time the total was $220.
so far nothing but gas and oil this year. that's gonna change real soon though.spending 3 weeks on Okeechobee in March.
