What lure or style are you going to teach yourself or improve your skills with this year?
This year I'm going to teach myself how to shaky head this year. Last year it was the Senko which added more fish to my livewell. In 2010 I tried but failed to teach myself to jig fish. After a few trips to the lake and drawing a blank with the jig it became painful. The Senko eased the pain.
What are some good shaky head lures?
Why did the jig fail? thats an all year round tool.
I'm learning the jig, and deep 20+ cranks.
I am going to keep trying the A-rig. I've had some success and seen first hand success by others, but I'm not completely confident in it just yet.

You've got me. I don't know if I was fishing to fast, wrong technique/place, or what. Bites just didn't seem to happen for me. After a few trips I think maybe I would get frustrated to fast and switch to some other technique such as crankbaits, c-rig, fluke, spinner, t-rig, etc. I tried it this past weekend at Stonewall, no luck. Switched to Senko and bam, started catching fish.
Cranks, for sure!

Not sure what size head you were using, but maybe they wanted a lighter jig. I'm thinking they may have liked the slow fall of the senko as opposed to the drop of the shakeyhead. In all types of jig fishing, rate of fall is big consideration.
swimbaits
This summer it will surely be jig fishing...

The ones that catch more fish than everybody else.
It's the "Year of the Jig."
Don't know why, but I have never really used them before (probably the fault of those doggone Senkos).
Two weeks ago I dragged a 1/2 ounce Watermelon-Red Boo Jig with a Zoom Super Chunk watermelon trailer through the grass from the shore for about an hour just before dusk. I got 3 bites but could not hook the fish. Then the last 20 minutes before dark I landed 3 largemouth with the largest one being 4 #, which is pretty good for my lake.
Gonna be lots of jiggin' this weekend.
Swimming Senkos
Swimbaits and going to throw the C- rig alot more,
Deep Cranks, Shakey Head, Drop Shot, and Topwater. They need polishing.
Tubes and drop shotting
Crankbaits, Bought an Okuma Crankbait rod and filled a box full of bandit 100 200 and 300 and dont care if they are all gone by end of year just wanna know how to catch fish with em before the year is over.
Chatterbaits- Already working well, caught all of my bass on it so far this year
Swim Jigs
Spinnerbaits
Jigs
I guess there's not much to learn, but I haven't have much luck or patience with Senkos and would like to try and change that this year.

I did the exact same thing! dobyns glass rod and a box full of little johns! sounds like this could get expensive
Ive got Senkos down,Ive had some success with Spinnerbaits,Ive caught plenty on a Trigged Baby Brush Hog,I think I have mastered the Dropshot (Its my go to when I just wanna catch "something",even dinks) Ive been on the lake 3 times this year and thrown Crankbaits(Rapala DT6 and DT10) and have caught "some" fish. Last year I killed em on a Rapala X Rap...
So lately for some reason I have been stocking up on Spoons. Ive seen videos where people are haulin in real nice fish from the depths with them, and I cant remember the last time I hooked into even a 3# fish. So I have my arsenal of spoons ready(Jigging,Fluttering, casting ect),but im betting the farm that if they dont produce, ill hit the ol Dropshot again.
Note to self: Your doubting yourself, put the "Dropshot" thought out of your mind...Spoons WILL produce!
I have 2 that I really want to learn to fish this year. One being a jig.. always have one tied on but have never caught anything on one. The other one being a deep diving crankbait. I am generally a bank beater, but want to learn how to find and fish deeper water this year.
call me crazy, but Im going to make the jump to even larger swimbaits. If 8" is good, 10" is great... right

Or buy one of these and let me know if you catch any fishOn 4/20/2012 at 12:23 PM, North Ga Hillbilly said:call me crazy, but Im going to make the jump to even larger swimbaits. If 8" is good, 10" is great... right

Bull shad is a good bait, check out some of the videos on youtube and their sight. I'd love to own one but just don't have that kind of coin to drop on a bait.
I really need to get better at deep cranking. It's just so much easier for me to pick up a jig and pick cover apart instead of covering water like you have to do sometimes. Want to get better at swimbaiting too. I'd probably be better at both if I had a little more specialized gear for them but that's going to have to wait for now.

yeah I've seen all the videos on it plus the action video, it swims really well, I'd like to see if anyone on here has it and gets a lot of fish with it, I have no problem spending 50 bucks on a lure if it brings a nice fish every cast or 2 like in the youtube videos
Like others have posted I need to bid farewell to the banks and get out my deep cranks and c rig.

Stonewall river is really not known for big bass, max I would see is about 4 lbs, LMB or SMB, same for the Shennandoah in my area.
Down size your jig, green's and browns mixed together work pretty good over here, a rage tail craw works great as a trailer in either bama or green pumpkin.
Jigs and C rigs for me this year with a splash of chatterbait.
I need to break my habit of going with the use of crankbaits, topwater lures, inline spinnerbaits and spinnerbaits all the time and get more into frogs, and plastics this year..
I need to go with deeper running lures, jig n pig, I have them all but i'm using what works for now and i need to change my ways.
Now fish wise i need to target northern pike, small mouth bass, trout and salmon more too.
Spinnerbaits for me.

I use to have a bull shad, it was a nice numbers swimbait. You wont catch one every two casts, those were hybrids in the video on the bull shad site, but they def will catch fish.

Jigs. I say that almost every year.

Same here.
Learning jigs more.
Senkos and Dropshot minnows. Not so easy to do on a medium-speed river, but I've seen it done and just HAVE to try it this year.
Jerk Baits...again. I catch the heck out of fish with these when inshore fishing but never a Bass.
Though it's not a specific lure or a technique, I want to focus more on using my drag properly, especially on my baitcasters..
I have a tendency to horse fish in.
Swimjigs - Already off to a good start with these type of lures.
Swimbaits- Not off to a good start so far this year. It's hard to put down the jig, swimjig, and spinnerbait when they produce so many already larger fish for me.

What baits are you going to use?

I spend 99% of my time with a Hudd, but I just got a 10" Trout from Joe at Real Prey that I have put some time in with. I put in about 3 hours today, but got agitated and switched to the hudd and managed to stick a slob. But in time I'll get one on the Real Prey, its got it all goin right, as far as swim and all goes. Going to get a new rod that will handle it better then put some serious time in with it.

larger swimbaits... I recently got a bull shad...waiting on it now and plan to fish it next week. also going to work on the drop shot technique this year.
frogs and buzzbaits. I also "invented" a new (to my knowledge at least, I've never see or heard of anyone else doing it before) way to rig a senko that I'm itching to try out.
I guess I need to re-learn every thing. I can't catch a bass right now to save my life. Worst slump I have ever been in, March was ok....heck it was March, we were fishing in boats insted of standing on ice, and catching fish, so it was all good. April has been terrible. I am not sure I have a limit of keeper bass yet for the month. And it's not for lack of trying either. Jerkbaits, tubes, dropshot, lip-less and shallow cranks, jigs, shakey heads,senkos.............I might as well be throwing bare hooks, at least I might snag somthing on accident.
I would like to learn to effectively flip a jig into cover and work it at various depths.
Also, not so much a lure but trying to having patience and slowing down. Last year at KY lake I caught a bass on the 15th cast into some cover. The only reason I continued to cast to it is becasue the guy in the back off the boat was hung up in a tree and trying to get loose.
Jigs and Jerkbaits. When summer is in full swing, deep diving crankbaits.
Mainly jigs. I've been trying to learn crankbaits for the past couple of years, so I'll still be going on that a lot too.
plan on trying swim baits this weekend and probably senkos this summer
im gonna try to catch fish. anything that does it will be mastered.
Probably the Pop-R type baits, can't catch a fish on them to save my life. I have no confidence with them.
Mike
More time with swimbaits for sure.
cranks earlyand late in the season- or when im on my boat
A-rig and C-rig when on the boat
otherwise im pretty confident with jigs, t-rigs, weightless plastics, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits and topwaters..
... oh buzzbaits, I have a hard time gettin hit on buzzers.
And Swimbaits!! ..i need to spend a lot of time on the water!
same thing as last year, and the year before. The jig.
-gk
Deep cranks and jigs
Jerk baits and spoons
Fishing jigs at various depths, drop shot, jerkbaits
Lizards work well on a Shakey Head. I am going to learn the Senko
I really want to catch something with a spinnerbait
Crankbaits and jigs. I am nearly useless with a crankbait, unless its lipless which is one of my confidence lures. Jigs i have never given a fair shot at so i plan on doing so.
I'm gonna learn to use a senko too.
