Fishing on a budget sucks. Honestly. I am a high school student so I only get a yearly allowance of 50$ to spend on fishing gear, excluding holidays and my birthday. I will be going to ma local Dick's to check out their clearance deals, hope I can get something good. What are some good fishing stores for those on a extremely tight budget??
Get a part time job if you can. That's where I get my spending money. I wouldn't say there are great stores for a budget, but rather, great brands for budgets. Store brand quality has really gone up, and the Cabela's, BPS, and Academy house brands of great value/quality for the price. Also, I'd recommend BIG Bite Baits soft plastics. They are extremely well priced and of high quality. As for rods, the Berkley rods (Cherrywood, Lightning, Shock, Amp, EMotion) are all extremely solid rods for the price. I fish currently all Berkley rods, as they are the most cost effective option for me. Good luck, it gets tough trying to get everything you want w/limited spending money!
Use craiglist and be a hustler ... With your head on a swivel ... That's what Id do .. And get some money some way or another .... Bust your ass bro !

How are the E-motion and Shock rods?? Would they be good for cranking or jigging?
Having a budget sucks in general, not just for fishing...Wait til you get older .
Like the above poster said...Work! When I was in high school (which was not that long ago) I fed my fishing habit by working as much as I could... I actually bought my first bass boat (17' BassTracker) when I was 16, plus all the tackle to go in it. It was hard work, but I really loved fishing and wanted a boat so I made it happen...I sort of took it to the extreme though, working every night after school so I could rack up hours and kept the weekends mostly free for fishing.
If you've got free time, especially in the winter...You can turn that directly into tackle .

I just shovel snow the entire winter to supplement my budget. It actually works pretty well. Whenever there is a big snowstorm, I make around 60$ in a day by shoveling drivedays.

That's a good start. I mowed yards, shoveled snow, put up hay, cut firewood etc when I was young.
Dad pounded working and budgeting into my head very early on. From 12 on it's been 10% church, 20% savings. Pay bills from there and what's left is left.

If I were you I'd save up on money and make a yearly purchase from TW on Black Friday, with some small purchases of essentials here and there.

The shock is great for jig fishing w/braid. The EMotion has a few different cranking specific models with cool blank actions. For pure value, the Shock is a great rod at $50.

I do the 20% savings thing... I think its a good budgeting idea. Ot can be used to fund big stuff, or if an emergency ever arises.

Yup. Just started my 5 year old on an allowance. She sets 10% aside for church, and 20% aside for savings. The rest is hers to do with as she so pleases.
im in college right now and I'm always broke, saving change helps me a lot lol but what helped me out a lot was berkley coming out with the havoc and now (first time I'm seeing it) yum is coming out with a lot of baits that are $2.99 but when it comes to rods and reels i don't like to buy too cheap, denali rods are great rods for the price with a lifetime warranty and for me the best reels have always been lews
One suggestion I would make for anyone on a budget is to learn to distinguish need from want. You need certain equipment and even on a limited budget, you can fill those needs. What you want and your decision to purchase it is what can become a stumbling block reguardless of you income.
If you can learn that simple lesson it will carry over into all the purchases you make in your life.

Get a medium action baitcaster or spinning combo, spool it with 10-12lb mono, and go from there. Specialized rods help but you can still get it done with one setup. Get a few basic baits, squarebill, topwater, spinnerbait, and t-rig stuff. If you're really into it, the bday and holiday $ will go straight to fishing
Pen, watch for the upcoming sales.
And I am sending you a PM on a discounted outlet for fishing gear and tackle.

This - 100%
Put forth a great deal of effort in distinguishing "need" from "want." Try to establish consistencies in what works most/least/not at all. Stick with what works while shying away from the mentality of doing too much of "Trying this and trying that."
Avoid being one of those guys who only really uses 10% of their gear.

I sent you a PM Penguino. Hope it helps. I try to fish on a budget as well, I'm what some people would call cheap, or frugal. I don't believe in paying 15 dollars for a lure, and I sure don't believe in paying 8 for a bag of plastics.

At best, I might pay $15 for a lure, IF its design offers something truly unique. Other than that - No.
Boy, you could buy some spinnerbaits and senkos and not have to buy much else all year long if you knew how to work em
Thats pretty cheap there..
50 bucks doesn't go a long way even buying sale items. I might stay away from plastics, those are always being replenished, in the long run they may be more expensive.
Forget what I buy it's what I use, during the present bass season I'm in right now I'm usually catching at least 10 bass every morning. I've used only a Storm chug a bug, roostertails (only item that I regularly replace, mepps will last longer), hard jerkbait and spoon. I don't always stay with a limited number of baits, but this year I am and doing it for less than $50.
The budget doesn't limit the number of fish you can catch, your ability is the controlling factor.

Well Senkos can become costly like SirSnookalot said. They are great, but they do tend to fall apart rather fast and at 8 bucks a bag he is going to be going to Bass Pro a heck of a lot.
I would have to agree with SirSnook. Its best if he sticks to things that don't need to be replenished often.
Also using braid will save $$$ on line.. You won't have to change out as often

well tackle warehouse has big bite baits senkos for $6 for 25 and there the same as any other senko and idk if he's a bank fisherman or not but i am and i try to stay away from some hard baits often because its a lot easier to get hung up fishing from bank and more than likely your not gonna get it back

Yea I sent him a pm with a ton of sites that I buy my stuff from. One is tackle warehouse. I hear you he doesnt need to get Gary Yamamoto Senko's. There are other stick baits out there. I use Yum Dingers, and I've used a few other brands too that are cheaper. Heck he can even go to Bass Pro and buy the box of assorted colors for stick baits. The bass pro brand tournament series.
Buy a Spinnerbait, a Buzzbait, and a Chatterbait.
Then buy a single pack of 5" curly grubs of the same color, use them as trailers.
Why?
> Inexpensive (great bang for your buck)
> Easy to store and carry
> Your plastics wont be torn up nearly as much, if at all.
> You will appeal to all of the fish's senses
> this can cover the entire depth of the water column
> If you want to finesse it - swim the grubs by themselves
> Unless you lose them, or some hawg bangs em up, they will last you a very long time.
Then, get a pack of worms, and some split shot.
$50 is a slim budget any way it's looked at, even saving a couple bucks on a bag of plastics that 50 number will easily be reached.
I'd also look at the other side of the equation, make your sure line is in good shape, knots tied properly and fish water where you are less likely to get hung up. You may not catch as many fish, but you are fishing. I would buy local instead of paying shipping charges if possible. Can always catch your own bait, nightcrawlers in the backyard are free.
I spend a whole lot more $50 on freshwater lures and tackle, but what I use to actually catch fish every day comes in way under that mark. When I first started tieing jigs I didn't have a vice, stuck the jig head into a cardboard box and use it as vice. Of course it didn't work as well but it did work and caught fish, so don't be afraid to improvise.

You could buy a 50 pack of Stik-O's at BPS Spring Classic and use O rings... That would save you quite a bit..

On a budget? Berkley Havoc soft plastics are your friends. $2.99 a bag, and they have everything covered. they work and they work as good as any other brand. I do "ok" with them LOL.
Send me a Pm man with address and stuff. I'll send ya some soft plastics and lures and stuff. Ok. I know what it's like.
And try ebay for deals. Sometimes they have bulk deals with soft plastics. Fishing flea markets are a good way to cash in on some really cheap gear. You pay a door fee around 3 bucks then people have tables setup selling stuff like a giant fishing yard sale. Just recently I picked up 4 packs of hooks and a popper plug for 3 bucks. My dad picked up a spinning rod for 7 bucks. Check your local newspaper to see if you have any flea markets in your area
Go to Walmart they got spinnerbaits and buzz baits for a dollar and always have a couple discount bins filled with lures plastics hooks

Yah this is where I get the majority of my lures. In Jersey, there are no "dedicated" fishing department stores like BPS or Gander so I usually end up going to Dick's or Wally World to get my lures. I think the last time I bought lures and baits was back in August when my local Walmart had a soft plastic clearance. I bought 3 packs of senkos and another 3 packs of ribbontails and I'm still going strong on those worms!
Walmart does not have a large selection, but large enough to catch any kind of fish any place. Those $1 spinnerbaits work, so do the inexpensive hard lures, Zoom flukes are very reasonably priced as well as other soft plastics. They carry decent spoons and bucktails too, not a bad place to shop for the budget minded person.
High 5's to RW.
Havocs are a good price! I hear yum may be coming out with more stuff in that range as well. Also, my Gander Mountian has Big Bite Baits Cane Sticks for .99 a pack for 10-12 worms. On 1/31/2015 at 8:03 AM, ww2farmer said:On a budget? I just drew a name out of the hat and you won...PM me and tell me where to send it.
like others mentioned, store brands (like gander mountain senko imitations), Berkeley havoc, big bite baits are some of the cheapest and can cover most of what you need.

How do the cheaper store brands compare to name brands (berkly, yum, zoom etc.)?
stop watching the marketing/flashy sponsored item mentioned every 30 seconds youtube videos and start watching the DIY/make ur own tackle videos. no loud music w/ adreneline shots of drag screaming bass but you'll learn a ton about how guys all over the country make their own tackle while on a budget
On 2/1/2015 at 2:39 AM, Penguino said:How do the cheaper store brands compare to name brands (berkly, yum, zoom etc.)?
Honestly I have used "cheaper" brands and have really liked some of them like gander mountain stuff (they have a lot of types of soft plastics) even though the selection can be slim at certain stores. Its soft plastics are actually similar to yum in my opinion and have nice scent. The key to their value is that for the same price you can get 1.5 to 2 times the number of baits. Berkley havoc is name brand and also budget which is awesome. BPS has some good store brand baits. Best way is to just try some of them and see. For example:
gander mountain 4'' finesse worm - $3.99 for 20 ct
gander mountain 5'' trick stick worm - $9.99 for 40 ct
they have a good color selection online at least and really good reviews.
The key is understanding that though not the price/"quality" of some higher end baits, some brands are more than sufficient for your needs. I have used yamamoto senkos because my dad has some, not only were different brands of stick worms cheaper and sufficient, I honestly preferred them.

I actually thought about it myself... I know at Dick's you'd have to be 18.... Maybe if I could get hired I could clean up their outdoors section, and maybe it wouldn't be such a bust every time I went!
Trust me and save your money, you don't need to buy ANY soft plastics right now.
