I had to find out for myself after reading several posts on here if TW did have the best prices. So i decided to put TW up against 4 BR sponsors. I have ordered from all of the companies i choose to compare TW to(including TW) and have never had a problem with any of them, so for me customer service was the same throughout. The sheet is nothing spectacular but seeing comparisons side by side really helps me out a lot. I compared price on 5 different items including a popular soft bait, hard bait, rod, reel and line. After all was said and done i added up the total cost and added shipping(if there was any) to get my final results.
I must include some things that swayed my decisions while comparing sites. The thing i found out first was that search engines are VERY important. The site i feel had the best search function was Bass Tackle Depot. Everything i typed into their search function came up immediately with no further searching needed. TW was a close second but i still had to do a little manual searching on a couple of items. Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, and American Bass Outlet were all about the same with some manual searching and a few "item not found" coming back from the search (which after a while gets very frustrating).
Another thing i noticed was clearance items section. BPS seemed to have the most items with American Bass Outlet, TW and Bass Tackle Depot having the best deals. Cabela's really didn't seem to stand out when browsing through there bargain bin.
The last thing i will mention is after i had all the numbers in place i decided to put a section for whether or not they were a BR sponsor( obviously TW is the only one not a sponsor). When i saw it on paper, it really hit me how much of a deciding factor it was. I kept asking myself "with all else being equal why would I not choose to use a company that supports a site that i love to be a part of?"
This is in no way meant to bad mouth TW or try and convince anyone that another company is better. I simply did it to satisfy my own curiosity and thought i would share my results and opinions with all of you.
Thanks for reading!!
to each their own...I think the TW is the best hands down! no comparison for me. amazing customer service, incredible selection, and fast shipping (free for most orders).

I disagree. I've got great deals in Cabela's Bargain Bin in the past. One example was a Pflueger Supreme XT for $70 that was normally $130. They were clearing out that model to make room for the newest XT. Also got a tackle bag for a substantial discount.
I agree at times the pickings are slim, you have to browse a few times a week to find the gems when they pop up, then act quickly as the good stuff goes fast.
After dealing with TW, I dont order from anybody else. Great customer service, good price, cheap shipping...what else can you ask for.
I buy too much tackle, not sure if anyone else here has that problem The main thing for me is selection, that is do they have what I want ? Many of the items found at BPS & Cabela's other than house brand items are found at local tackle shops by my house who I try to support. What I purchase from the likes Bass Tackle Depot & Tackle Whse are a lot of premium items such as Japanese lures & swimbaits that are harder to find at some of these other stores. I look at both as being pretty compararable but I try use BTD more because they are a site sponsor and will go with Tackle Whse if there is something I want that BTD doesn't carry. All of these places have made a nice dent in my wallet.
I have always been a supporter of BPS (mainly because of me living near one) but I have started to buy more and more from TW and less from BPS. Prices are great and customer service is perfect at TW. They only difference though between TW and BPS is that you can actually go in store at Bass Pro. You can't at *** which is a weekness because it is easier to look around in store.
Just thought I put my 2 cents.
If TW and Bass Tackle Depot are the same but BTD helps make BassResource Free for you, why would you still buy from TW?
Like usual, some suppliers have stuff that others don 't, so it 's a matter of shopping around, there 's stuff I can only find at TW, there 's stuff that I can only find in BTD, there 's stuff that I can only find in BPS, Cabela 's ? normally I don 't shop at Cabela 's , I still check what they have every now and then and I have purchased from them, actually one of the best deals I 've found in recent years was at Cabela 's, that 's from where I got 4 TDZs.
I have bought from all but tackle warehouse.
Upon reading this thread, I went to the tackle warehouse site and now am $120 dollars poorer..... thanks a lot guys.
The deal were great though.... got a carrot stick for basically $100 dollars off.

x2. I go where it gives me the lowest price.
Raul has it right, every place is different so I shop around. I buy and sell a lot on ebay, and have found many awesome deals on ebay. I have a visa card sponsored by BPS so I spend my points there, and have bought from Cabela's and TW as well as BTD and many others. I have a family so my money is better off with me than a tackle company so I shop around.

;D That store will bankrupt your bank account.
Raul nailed it...every store is different. TW and BTD are among my favorite stores to browse around in though. Those two are usually the first I buy from.
For me, it's a matter of what they have in their inventory. BTD and TW have LESS stuff than BPS but it's all GOOD stuff. Most of the stuff at BPS is garbage.
Between TW and BTD, it comes down to the website for me. TW's website is better.

TW's website is definitely easier to surf around. Nothing against BTD, but they need to re-do the site. And you can't beat 5 dollars for 2 days shipping, where BTD charges anywhere between 20 to 28 bucks.

Living 15-20 minutes form BPS, I tend to buy most of my lures there. There's no reason for me to order Rapala cranks or Berkley soft plastics online and wait 4 days to get them when I can pick them up in person.
I buy most of my reels on Ebay, though. I haven't found an online or brick-and-mortar store that can beat the prices.
I usually buy at least one batch of lures from TW a year, but that's about it. I have so much stuff already that I rarely need enough to break the $50 mark on an order, and I really hate paying for shipping.
It can be the best at certain times, but not all the time.
Great responses guys and like soccplayer stated to start us off "to each his own".. but a lot of the reasons most of you give IMO is matched or beaten by sponsors of this site. If you go for price then ABO is your place to go. Customer service will always be a matter of opinion. Fast shipping, cant get any faster than walking in a store and buying it (plus no shipping charges, even on a $3 item). And that was the whole reason i wanted to do a sheet like this. So I could choose based not on word of mouth, but actually see side by side comparison of different companies and choose the best one for me.
Fluke nailed it on the head with his statement . That is the same conclusion that I drew from my comparison sheet when all was said and done. TW is a great company ,no doubt, but on paper and in my personal experience they are no better than those that sponsor this site. In essence the BR sponsor column was my "kicker fish". Just somethin to think about.
TW will meet/match any advertised price on the internet, provided A: They can verify it (will do that online while U wait); and B: the place doing the advertising has the product in stock. I spent a lot with TW this year, including a Fortrex TM, several rods, reels, and other odds and ends. Free shipping, and I get out of the almost 10% sales tax I'd have to pay around here for the same articles.
As for Cabelas, I love their outdoor clothing, but the last time I was going to order from them it was for a spool of Yellow PowerPro as I couldn't find it around here, and TW is rather blase' about colored lines. Was set to submit the order when I saw that shipping was $14 for one spool of line . I'll go without.
I wasn't aware of Tackle Warehouse until about a month ago from rave reveiws on this site. They have a great website and I will without a doubt be ordering from there from now on instead of BPS. I have always ordered online from BPS because local bait shops around here don't have decent selections of anything that has to do with bass fishing. I have always thought they were a tad overpriced and the shipping is ridiculous IMO. Although they do have a good selection.
I like both TW and BTD. If you call TW they will price match so their price is always going to be at least tied with the other stores so your price sheet is incorrect. They also do have a walk in store. BTD also has a store and I think they will price match if you call. Soo the deciding factor would be selection and personal opinion such as being a sponsor.
TW may have price match but i quoted the prices as listed, which is what most consumers are going to pay. Also note that i put walk in stores(plural) meaning they have a national chain that the majority of people can visit pretty quickly.
BTD also has price match so long as there is proof.
I go with TW based on selection. Especially when I'm looking to restock a bunch of hooks. In my past experiences TW keeps me from having to buy a couple of things from this site and a couple from another site because they usually have it all to where others don't. I don't remember the specifics but I can recall a couple of instances where this has happened to me.
QuoteIf TW and Bass Tackle Depot are the same but BTD helps make BassResource Free for you, why would you still buy from TW?
A reason to buy from TW rather than BTD would be selection. There's just some things that BTD does not have that TW has. However, it's also the other way around where BTD has something that I want that TW does not.
BTD I believe is going to catch up to the selection that TW has and when they get there I can see alot of folks on this site going there instead of TW.
QuoteTW may have price match but i quoted the prices as listed, which is what most consumers are going to pay. Also note that i put walk in stores(plural) meaning they have a national chain that the majority of people can visit pretty quickly.
Price matching makes price irrelevant weather the price is on their site or not. IMO the other stores got nothing on TW or BTD. Its all about selection. Both those places ship super fast and free over $50. All things being equal (which they usualy arent) its good to support a sponsor. Everytime I decide which store to buy from I always look in the clearnce section and add a few items. The clearance section if a real factor, especialy if the other stores dont have those items to price match.
To show how important selection is, American Bass Outlet listed 22 total swimbaits of the low end.
BTD has 97 total swimbaits with high and low end.
TW has 61 BRANDS and I wasnt going to count individual baits it might be over 1000.
Of course I am partial to swimbaits so I used them as an example.
Bass pro and Cabelas are handicaped by their massive overhead. I think their actual stores are whats keeping them in the game. Plus they cater to fisherman and hunters.
In the past BPS and Cabelas had control but in the last couple years TW has been the best place for online shopping with BTD closing the gap.
I remember when TW was small, they grew by stocking hard to get items on top of their free shipping and price matching. Those hard to get items make it very hard for the big box stores to compete with them. If you wish to support a sponsor of this site (recomended) then BTD is a good place to start.
I always shop around, but find myself ordering from TW or BTD. Free shipping on $50 or more is hard to beat. The shipping charges at Cabelas and Bass Pro make me cringe. And to top it off it seems when there is something at BPS or Cabelas that I need and they are the only ones to have it, when I go to order they are out of stock of the color or size I want. And then if you backorder it they want you to buy a certain quantity. TW will let you backorder stuff with no limitations and will ship it free if you had bought enough for free shipping on the order.
QuoteIf TW and Bass Tackle Depot are the same but BTD helps make BassResource Free for you, why would you still buy from TW?
Free over night shipping that delivers at 9am the very next morning ;D The selection is also another key factor.
I think one huge thing that was briefly mentioned is the walk in store factor.
When it comes to colors I have not already owned, different hook sizes, a a new weight I have not used much..... I want to be able to handle the product and size it up for myself.
Your local store or a BPS or Cabelas really provides that huge ability to actually really look at something and judge if it will work for you.
Sometimes I really want to see and feel something before I buy it. Sometimes I want the best deal. When it is all even, I will go with a local, private individual store or an online dealer that supports this site.... gotta support those that support you.
I used to buy from TW, then The Hooked Up Tackle. If I need to order from the Net then its THUT for me. To be honest, I support my local tackle shop as they provide things the others dont, personal service and a smile. Id rather keep the money local then send it somewhere else. Besides I get better prices there then either TW or BTD and I get to bring it home now. If they dont have something I want, they get it for me. 7.49 for a bag of Senko's is absurd!

Bassresource.com is a great resource for all of us in the bass community. They offer a place for bass fishermen to chat, learn and tell fish stories.
They have been a great resource for AmericanBassOutlet.com (ABO) as well. We have had great success as a startup company with the support of BR.
Many of you might not realize, but ABO is only 9 months old. We started with the idea that we could compete with the big guys by offering better prices by keeping our overhead low. We shop every day to find the best deals and offer them to our customers. Since day one we've said - we won't carry everything but we will have great prices.
We are honored that www.AmericanBassOutlet.com is mentioned with the established stores. We look forward to continuing to grow with you and offer the best prices to our friends in the BR community.
ABO encourages you to shop with ALL the BR advertisers, they make this forum work.

Great post Jim.
I just made an order yesterday for two Curados at what was a fantastic price..... I saved $76 on that order, and I will be using that savings plus more on my next visit to ABO.
Thanks for supporting this place!

Great Post!!
Jim, i was very surprised at your prices when i started comparing all the stores. I also did not realize that you were such a young company. To be quite honest i never really gave ABO a look until i wanted to do this sheet. Having said that, ABO will be one of the first stores i check when its time to re-up on tackle and equipment.
Jim please dont take my previous post as negative. I was simply stating why sombody would choose one store over another. You are on the right track. When TW started , they made their name by seeking out hard to get custom products and even having some products custom made for thier site. This is a big advantage because if a customer wants that particular item they have to get it there.
I have some suggestions/ideas for you.
#1 free shipping over $50 this works and most customers will spend the extra to get over $50
#2 talk to your vendors and ask them if they have any items that are not selling and see if they will sell them to you at pennies on the dollar. Most companies have these products laying around and you could get them at a steal, mark them up a little and still be WAY cheap. This will keep customers checking your site just to see if you got any new close outs in stock.
#3 post on the message boards that you sponsor. Let the guys know your out there. I had never heard of your store before until this post but I will be checking it out.
#4 do what TW did. find some hard to get stuff. Have some custom colors made. I am sure there are a bunch of small time vendors who would love to get their products on a REAL online site. Many of the garrage guys would even do consignment.
You can also look into some high end stuff. Maybe you can find a good source of high end Japanese stuff or some wierd Japanese soft plastics.
#5 Ship stuff FAST!
Good luck I hope you make your place in the market
I think that TW offers a lot of different bass baits that you can not find in the larger retailers, but larger retailers such as Bass Pro and Cabelas may have better pricing due to their heavier purchasing power...just my opinion
Snook, do a price comparison on what is in your tackle bag. I mean part for part inventory, current state with current prices. You'll find the results surprising.
QuoteI think that TW offers a lot of different bass baits that you can not find in the larger retailers, but larger retailers such as Bass Pro and Cabelas may have better pricing due to their heavier purchasing power...just my opinion
I assume prices vary by regions, but the closest one to me is at the high end of the pricing range. Im talking the name brand stuff. The BPS branded stuff is very reasonable.

I am not sure what you mean by this...
Take out a tackle box, and price out its contents on each of the stores listed.
QuoteTake out a tackle box, and price out its contents on each of the stores listed.
I think you misread what I was saying. I favor stores like Tackle Warehouse because they offer many different types of baits that you can not find in large retailers. I also stated that retailers such as Bass Pro or Cabelas MAY have better pricing due to mass purchasing...which may not always be the case. Yes, Lake Fork Trophy Lures worms are cheaper at Tackle Warehouse then at Bass Pro, but then again I was simply just giving my opinion. There are so many different variables when dealing with situations like this, such as shipping costs, online only sales, etc.
I'm quite sure BPS and Cabela's are getting much better pricing from manufacturers due to volume purchasing, but in my experience, they rarely pass these savings on to the consumer.

No dude, what I'm saying is that you need to look at what you use, and buy most often, and comparison shop those items. Then add shipping. Bass Pro is always more expensive for my stuff, day in and day out. And they don't generally have all that I need.
QuoteI'm quite sure BPS and Cabela's are getting much better pricing from manufacturers due to volume purchasing, but in my experience, they rarely pass these savings on to the consumer.
Unless you buy directly in the store, you will pay more at bps or cabela. Need to take shipping cost into consideration.
Whether a large retailer gets a better volume discount from their wholesaler is really only important if that discount is reflected in the shelf price. If they still sell the product at MSRP, then they're not passing the savings on to the customer.
Smaller retailers may or may not get volume discounts, but may operate on a lower margin to win customers with their pricing.
