Strike King kvd models, arashis, Mann's

Yeah, that Strike King KVD model neon bluegill is hard to beat. Love it. It tracks true and looks awesome. Honestly that is one of my favorites.
I still have 4 Bagley fat cats too that I love, but cannot bring myself to use them because I never see them anymore. I guess they are something from my young days that I cannot let go of and just want to keep lol
Strike King 1.5 and 1.0, H2O, Berkley Pitbull, Luck-E-Strike
Strike Kind KVD 1.5 (I also use the 1.0's and 2.5's) Favorite color is chart/black back, followed by any of the shad colors.
I've used a bunch and they all work well from cheap to expensive. My favorites are the Storm Arashi, Xcalibur XCS 100 and 200, Yo-Zuri 3DB Square bill, and the Mann's Baby X. Honorable mentions go to the Rapala DT Fat 3, the Bagley Balsa B and the Bagley Rattling Kill 'R B, the Bomber Square A, Cotton Cordell Big-O, and the Norman Fat Boy. Anyone of those baits will give me confidence and I'll add that I too like the KVD 1.5 and 2.5 baits myself but everyone lists them so I gave you my alternatives for those but they are just as good as the rest.
Norman Fat Boy and Bomber Square A
Rick clunn square bill by lucky strike

My favorites are a Combat crank, and Aska, but I use a KVD 1.5, H2O, Bandit, Daiwa, and others quite a bit (pun intended). There is no best action. Fish will react differently at times. When they are shallow, I can usually get them to eat a square bill. If they are hitting short I'll work on the action, if that doesn't work, I'll try something different. When I'm getting them mostly on the front hook I know I'm close. When I need to reach way down with the needle nose, that's the one.
I'm still trying to find my favorite . Theres an old plug that is my all time best but they are no longer made . The Rick Clunn baits by Luck E Strike have done well for me .
I K.I.S.S. with squarebills. SK KVD's, in the 1.5 and 2.5 size in 4 colors
Natural Bream
Orange belly craw
Chartreuse sexy shad
Chartreuse with black back
I do also have some Storm Arashis, and like them just fine, but 99% of the time if I am throwing a squarebill, it's a SK kvd.
I like a lot of different square bills but am not a fan of teh KVD models, for some reason they don't produce well for me. I like the rapala squuare bills of various flavors, the rick clunn and my recent favorite are the sebile baits that i picked up o na whim cause they were havign that buy one get one free sale.
I think there are a lot out there that are good performers.
I have a few of the rick clunns from lucky craft. haven't tried the lucky strike version, and probably won't anytime soon.
the kvd's work just fine and are sold in my local wal mart soooooooooooooooooooo
My favorite is the Xcalibur XCS100 and XCS200 unfortunately they don't make them anymore though.
I like H20 from academy and XPS from BPS

Yea that neon bluegill is becoming a sure bet for me, it was the only bait I even had some bites on yesterday. That's the one square bill I try to always keep a few of with me and always have one tied on because of the success I had on it early this year, the bass and stripers were nailing it.
I use alot of old school baits....The Luhr Jensen Speed Trap, Wordens Timber Tiger, Cordell Big O, but I like pretty much every crankbait from the Academy brand to Strike King and Rapala...I would say my favorite is the flat sided Spro Lil John which come in some awesome colors, and I also like the Shallow Shad Rap on spinning tackle and light line since it has an action that is different.
The Timber Tiger is the most weedless imo around wood and light weeds, it has a design that allows it to back out of trouble after ripping it free from weeds or after deflecting from wood. It is ugly, comes in a few different sizes, but it is a tank that can take a beating and will keep running true. If you look on Tackle Warehouse, I am not sure a negative review exists for them which is rare....Hard to beat at $6 for someone like me who loses alot of cranks and is hardly an expert at cranking...

Those speed traps caught my eye after watching the bassmasters tournament this year, I believe every one of Aaron Martens fish came on the speed trap.
KVD's and storm arashi's
The XPS BP square bills usually do it for me. I also throw the SK 1.5s as well. I have some Arashis but have yet to land anything on them.
xcalibur xcs 200 or jackall aska sr
xcalibur,bandit,xcite baits
While I throw different brands of square bills from time to time, more often than not I throw a Timber Tiger. IMO no square bill I've ever used comes through brush better. They tend to run true as well.
The sk 1.5 black n chartreuse for some reason this works for me in clear and dirty water. The arashi produce for me to.
I have 3 - well 4 really.
Three standards and a new comer . . .

TW doesn't carry it, you know what that means...
The 6th sense is a great plastic bait..In balsa, I like Dave's and Black Label..

I've only seen the L7 offered on the 6th Sense site ~ even there it's pretty low key.

KVD 1.0 and 1.5 (1.5 90% of the time). Chart/black back, Sexy Sunfish, and Gizzard Shad are the best producers for me.
I have a bunch of brands but the one I always end up tying on is the KVD 1.0-2.5 size squarebill. That erratic swimming action used to describe the bait in the water is very accurate and has me convinced it draws more strikes, as opposed to other squarebills that swim in a fairly straight line.
What's so special about the kvd 1.5 chartreuse/black back?

It catches fish. I don't know why, but it just flat out kicks butt in murky water. Pretty sure thats what KVD won a classic on in murky water.

How does it do in clearer (3-5') visibility?

That's when I throw the sexy sunfish or shad depending on forage. I don't think I've ever thrown the chart/blk in that clear of water so what do I know... could be the best thing out there.
For the KVD cranks the Natural Shad works well anywhere! I also have success with Sexy Shad or Chartreuse Sexy Shad. But really, color is probably pretty low on the reasons why a bass will react to a square bill. Pick a couple of confidence colors and just keep throwing it out there!

KVD Cataouatche Special is what he won the Classic on. Pretty similar to the standard chart/black back, just more chartreuse.

It still works, but it's more situational than a standard in clearer water. Green Gizzard Shad is one of my go to colors in clearer water.
My go to would have to be:
Strikeking 1.5:
sexy shad, bluegill, and natural shad.
Spro little John:
Rootbeer
Outlet has Bandits in two colors for less than two bucks a piece at the moment....in case the monkey has been off your back lately
I have a lot of confidence using a SK 1.5 and 2.5. And to be honest I too have not seen that much of a difference in the strikes I get from the color I am using. Most of my bites are right after i bump something so i really believe that is the key. However I caught 4 different species of fish using the orange craw one day (largemouth, striper, crappie and a muskie). I have Arashi and Lucky Strike models, just haven't used them yet because of the SK success.

Hey A-Jay what do you think about the 6th Sense 50x square bill?

I'll admit that at 3/8 ounce it's a little small for my liking.
Doesn't mean It doesn't catch bass - just means I prefer a 1/2 or 5/8 ounce bait.

I just bought one today for one of our lakes that the smallmouth love little squarebills on. Not sure when I'll fish it next, but I'll try to remember to post when I do.

Solid answer...
For some reason the discontinued Xcalibur xcs100 always stood out as my favorite. I caught my first bass over five pounds on one in fire-tiger years ago and ever since then when I couldn't catch a fish that crank did. Before they went out of business I actually went to every tackle store around town and bought every one I could find. Still have five or six left.
Strike king 1.5s. and the price isnt bad!
I've been using megabass cyclones and really like them but there coffin billed other than that kvd squarebill 1.5
KVD's. They produce!!!
