My Walmart's Fishing Section Has Really Gone To $%&# 2024

fishing user avatarNeil McCauley reply :

I don't shop for tackle there anymore really so I was a little surprised...

-Tackle/lure section now cut to 1 aisle instead of 2

-Pitiful little row of crankbaits, all tiny and in the worst colors

-No shad raps, no skitter pops, not even a jitterbug.

-no senkos....NO SENKOS!? :confused2:

For some reason I don't remember it being like this.

fishing user avatarmackroper reply :

Same way in Texas, and the only place within 50 miles to get tackle. Really discouraging

fishing user avatarIhatedirtbikes reply :

You can always try online. Some great deals in the forums here, craigslist, ebay, dealers, and retail online. More competition, options, and better prices. Walmart makes too much money anyways, support small businesses :)

fishing user avatarww3869 reply :

Mine is terrible. 50million packs of zoom plastics and very few of anything else. Tons of shad colored crankbaits even though we have no shad. NO bluegill colored crankbaits even though that's the primary forage. Swimbait hooks in only 1 size and weight.

fishing user avatarAdamsEye reply :

I live 11 miles from the shore in Jersey, so I get mainly off shore stuff at walmart. Even my local dickssports has a poor selection that is poorly organized. I even tried to get a job at the dicks working nights, trying to restore order to the fishing department but they don't like that kind.

Walmarts inventory control is relentless, they don't want items sitting on the shelves. If it don't sell they won't stock it that simple.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

Yep. Only thing I've bought there in the last few years is Zoom Craws. I would buy Trick Worms there, but they're always out of bubble gum color. Academy has become my go-to.

Dick's doesn't seem to know what people in our area fish for. They don't seem to try.

Walmart is the worst. I flat out refuse to go there except to remind myself how lucky I am to be me.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

With more than 41% of the state of Michigan covered by lakes, rivers & streams, Senko's are sold a most every little hole in the wall road side establishment. - Even The Two Track Inn . . .

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

Ours have decent selections, including some good yum and Luck E Strike plastics kits.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

There only fully stocked up on freshwater tackle in the springtime. As the stuff runs low it's clearances for room for hunting stuff.

The space becomes costly. I was shopping there in Jan to march grabbing clearances on tackle, plastics, cranks, etc. I shop online mostly now.

We have a local mom n pop bait shop with marked down tackle from the last century. I give it to the kids. Brannans bass shop in Texas is good.

Before I moved the local deli even sold fishing stuff. Bait too.

fishing user avatarJosh Smith reply :

I go there to stock up on Zoom and Yum plastics that are in the clearance bin, but that's really about it.

I did buy my (surprisingly!) favorite rod there, a Cherrywood I've found to be excellent for thick brush and veggie fishing with worms and jigs, but that is an exception.

Can't never ever have enough bubble gum trick worms, I guarantee. I never leave home without them!

fishing user avatarHoosierHawgs reply :

I rarely go in there, for tackle anyways. I may go in there to get a few things here or there, but never tackle. DSG around here is 10x better this year then in years past, so I go in there when I take a lunch and pick up whatever on sale, usually something is... I'll buy something that I NEED to have that day I buy at Gander Mountain. My big tackle purchases, and any rods, reels, or line, are bought at local shops... Honey Creek Tackle, The Outdoorsman, or Mooresville Tackle Service Center. I also make a trip to BPS every 8 months or so, and buy online from then when they have free shipping no minimum. Really just no reason to go into Walmart. I feel bad for the dude who has to shop at Wally World because its the only place in 50 miles.... That sucks :(

fishing user avatarABW reply :

Walmart is the only place I can go if I need something immediately. I went in today to get some fluorocarbon. It was either Red Label or Vicious Fluoro. I went with Vicious because why not. It was alright, but I wish they had some better lines.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

My local Wal-Mart is a joke to say the least.  The fishing selection is a waste of time and the prices are better at Dick's, Gander Mountain, you name it.  Also, I don't know if they still care these but they use to carry Zoom, Yum and GYCB in smaller quantity packages at the same price or more than it would cost for a full pack any retail bait shop.

I will not shop there unless I have to.

It's been several years ago but I lived in Paducah, Ky for about 2 years.  The Sunday evening entertainment was to go to Wal-Mart with my neighbor and sit in the parking lot and watch the crazy people go in and out.  I hate to admit it but it was fun and we were not the only ones there.  When we started to add beer and portable grill, we might have gone too far.

fishing user avatarjtharris3 reply :

Hey guys, remember, it's Walmart we're talking about here. You all who have been disappointed by their selection are setting your expectations way too high!

Exactly. With most places offering free shipping on orders over $50 anymore, why go to Wal-Mart for fishing tackle?

The one by me does have some great new hooks from Eagle Claw. Some short shank, EWG, black nickel trebles that are really nice and come in a 15pk for less than $5. Also have some EWG, heavy duty black nickel worm hooks that come in a 12 or 15 pack for less than $5. Other than that, I have 2 BPS, a Cabela's, 2 Academy Sports, 3 or 4 DSG, Roger's, Mondotackle, and Scheel's all within a hours drive from me, I have no reason to shop Wal Mart for fishing tackle.

I went into the one by Chong's and the mall today to get 1 stinking item and it's ridiculous. I'm not one to dress up just to go to the store but those people in there had no self respect. I could smell people from 10ft away. People with their underwear hanging out of holes in their sweatpants. Parents swearing at their toddler-age kids. One woman was back by the paint eating a bag of chips and I heard her snort. They say southside out near Reidland is worse.

I did swing by the fishing stuff and they inly carry Trick Worms, Flukes, Brush Hogs, and Lizards in Zoom. Similar in other brands. But if you're looking for junk fishing line, $20 combos, and panfish jigs, they have a whole wall of it. Dick's is about as bad and Gander is overpriced. When I went to school at Murray they had better stuff. Benton may be better too. It just boggles my mind that the stores near Kentucky Lake don't have a good selection.

I hear good things out of The Cabin in Eddyville and Bass and Gas and Fishermans HQ in Benton though.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

The Walmarts have gone down hill since I moved to South Florida, it used to be pretty fair.  I still can buy what I need to catch both fresh and saltwater fish, just a smaller selection.  I was in Yuma Arizona last week, the Walmart there was terrible.  I had my own reel and salt water lures with me but I needed a rod, couldn't find anything decent, Sports Authority was even worse.  I did buy at Walmart an Ugly stick  6' med/hvy $40 and went freshwater striper fishing, sold it to a guy on the bank for 20 bucks.

fishing user avatarChrisD46 reply :

WM has very strict buying procedures now - as Adamseye said: " if it doesn't sell quickly then they don't stock it " .

DSG has buying decisions made six states away - they don't care about local buying habits or needs for the fishing dept .

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

My Walmart is typical - one aisle, with the usual stuff. Not a big selection of any one thing but enough to go fishing.  Like most of us, I purchase quantity items on-line but have to use Walmart for items that I need immediately. For me, it's the only tackle outlet within about 40  miles (there are pros and cons of living in the sticks... ;) )

My Walmart rarely has any clearance items, and when  it does, it's like only .50 cents off.  Also, with all of Walmart's purchasing power, they seem to sell many items, espescially crankbaits, at full list price with no discounting.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

Mine is pretty awesome.....great selection, lots of deals, and a big clearance section. I rarely walk out without a purchase.

My buddy told me if you put things in your cart online but don't order, they, BPS and Cabela's will email you offering free shipping. I haven't tried yet. I get what I can off Amazon because we have PRIME (no shipping charges ever). You pay a small fee once a year. $25 I think. The wife paid it because that's how we do most shopping for gifts.

Just like Big Lots...you can find something you want there. But you can't go there with a shopping list.

fishing user avatarjdl2425 reply :

There is a trout stream that runs behind the Walmart I go to, so the fishing section caters more to trout anglers than bass. But I've been to ones in NY and NC that have a large selection of bass gear. But Walmart is having a price war with Amazon right now. Unfortunately it seems like the fishing stuff is not being affected by it.

I get $20 off coupons from BPS all the time.  Just log in, add items to your cart and dont buy them.  After a day or two you'll start getting the $20 coupons emailed to you.

also, Amazon prime is $99 per year unless you are a student, then it is $49.  anybody can get a student email by signing up at their local community college even if you never take a class.  it also gives you free 2 day shipping.  overnight shipping you still have to pay extra for.

I wonder if it's also cheaper for a teacher. The wife's an educator. You'd be surprised the discounts out there for them.

My local Wal-Mart is stale. They have the usual 300 pegs of Zoom stuff that apparently no one buys since it's always in stock, then the Yum and SK stuff is always out and never re-stocked. The selection is always the same....always

I could've really stuck it to their policy of items being priced right....there were 4 Lews Speed Stick Carbon rods all in the wrong section....marked at $34.99

I just played it honest and let the mgr know he was about to have a bad time if someone less honest than me took advantage of their mistake

However....I went back last week and they're all still there....oh what to do...a moral dilemma  :Idontknow:

Buy them. He doesn't care. He's the problem, not you. I worked at Wally World for a year when I was a teen. My buddy worked in the sporting goods/automotive dept before the days of the Super Walmarts. He always had a list of what was going on clearance. I would ask him to take the rods I wanted off the rack when he put them on clearance and put them with the damaged goods. Since I had to wait for payday, I couldn't just go get them. I got three nice ones on clearance minus my employee discount that way and used them for years. Still have one and just sold 2 5'6" pistol grip "96% graphite" rods at a yard sale.

To be clear, I wasn't asking him to make them damaged to cheat the company. I just had him hide them for me until I could buy them.

My local Walmart stopped carrying bass hooks a few years ago.  When I got into fishign three years ago they carried Gamakatsu and Eagle Claw, extra wide gap hooks and other bass hooks.  But the last two years they got rid of the Gamakatsu and extra wide gap hooks.   Also had Z-Man soft plastics three years ago but the last two years no Z-Man products.  The big super Walmart has a good selection though.

I agree. My advice is to go to a Walmart in the ghetto where you won't find alot of avid fisherman. There was a drive by on a drug dealers car six houses up from me where they shot almost thirty rounds of .223 two weeks ago and a guy was killed behind my house last night. The Walmart a mile from my house always has my zoom bubblegum worms and my favorite old school rapalas.

fishing user avatarWeld's Largemouth reply :

In the northeast walmart carries barely any fishing stuff. The walmarts here on Long Island don't carry anything except a few combo rods. You need to go down south to Florida walmarts to get some lures.

You can order from Walmart too and get free shipping after a certain price.

Yes you can in South Florida.  If Walmart was the only place to shop here there is enough stock to catch fish.  A small selection yes but I can buy xraps, bomber lures, mirrorlure, spoons, bucktails, plastics and jig heads.  Power pro and decent enough rods and reels.

fishing user avatarstkbassn reply :

My Walmart isn't the greatest either but they do carry War Eagle spinnerbaits and they have good prices on plastics. Dicks here isn't great but I always leave with something when I go. I just go to Sportsmans Warehouse 90% of the time or order online.
