Just curious as to what the first first bait you will throw at the beginning of a new season?
I think I'll go with the ol' trusty spinnerbait!
Or the jerk bait.
Or the jig.
Or the crankbait...
Decisions Decisions! :S
I would imagine that a large majority of the folks here have already made their first cast of the season, but I have been deployed to Kuwait since October, so I have not. I'll be back in the States in a few weeks, and I pick up my new boat as soon as I get back. My first cast of the season should happen in the second week of May.
I can't say for certain what bait it will be, but there's a high probability that it will be a Texas rigged Gene Larew Salt Craw in the Sooner Run color. I say that because it is my confidence bait that I have tied on at all times.
Ordinarily, my season starts in Texas in January or February, and it's usually a safe bet that I'll start with a lipless crankbait in a red craw pattern.
No decision here....Rapala HJ12 was my first cast of the year.
Threw a spinnerbait for the first and caught one on second cast.
So far, have caught them on spinnerbaits, crankbaits and a shaky head.
Will be trying a lot more next week.
as my boat is being re-powered, i have yet to make a cast. and if the guy doing the repower doesnt display some urgency i may never get to cast this year!,...lol,...but im sure it will be a jerkbait
Mine was a zoom super fluke.
First fish was on a road runner.

Thank you for your service
I knew this was going to be a good year, my first cast was a war eagle finesse in the mouse pattern and I caught a 12 inch largemouth on that first cast. First time that has ever happened, usually I get skunked my first trip of the year lol.
I threw a booyah Spinnerbait..
Red eye shad in chili craw
My first cast this year was with a Blade Bait.
My first fish this year was on a flick shake worm.
A jig has taken more fish this year than any other bait.
I throw a lipless crank right after ice out just because I want to crank and wind after a long winter. Then, after having fun casting I drag a T rig craw or a jerk bait to actually catch fish.
Normally I start my day with a spinnerbait.
Very first cast of the year I threw a 1/2oz. Brown Chatterbait and landed the biggest bass I've ever caught on that first cast. I'd say its gonna be a good year!
Ive caught quite a few so far this year throwing that same chatterbait.
False premise really, there is no one bait that goes first. Would depend on when, where and conditions. In my case, I don't see this time of the year as a beginning, but a recurring progression. This year specially we had some very mild weather followed by cold weather followed by mild weather early on. On a given day I'll have 2 or 3 baits that experience tells me should be the thing, and usually are, sometimes fish have different ideas, and INAWF.
Season? What's this season thing you speak of? Like spring, summer, fall and winter? Fish 365 in the dirty south!
Well, for me personally it was a buzzbait and you guessed it... nada! Actually nada for the next 20 casts with the buzzbait. Haha. However, my first trip down to Baja this year resulted in a nice Yellowtail on the first drop of the year with a jig. That thing didn't even hit the bottom before it got slurped! So I got that going for me, which is nice... Haha.
Strike King Red Eye Shad. Sexy shad or any of the chrome variants.
Rat-L-Trap or jerk bait
I like to hook a live shiner on a jig head. Or use a floating jerkbait or shallow running crank baits. A lot of people retrieve too slowly, you should go slower but not so slow that no
action happens
My first cast this year was a wacky rigged bubblegum senko.
Jerk bait , 3 casts later 1st fish
Lipless crank in a red craw color
It will almost certainly be a spinnerbait or a swim jig to cover some water.
Rigged it up last night, swim jig with an anglers choice killshot, now I just have to wait till the first full weekend in May to throw it. 2nd will be a Bill Lewis echo that was kind to me on the last opener.
Threw my first one of this season more than a month ago. It was a black/red Booyah pond magic spinner bait.
if i threw a #4 spinner in my bathtub, does that count?
If I ever get to go, it will be a KVD square bill, a chatterbait, or a red eye shad in a red craw pattern
Strike King KVD Deep Jerkbait ~ Yellow Perch.
A-Jay
LC pointer 78 in ghost minnow, most likely.
First cast was a bladed jig. First catch was on a Super Spot.

My girlfriend threw her first cast of the year this evening (KVD 1.5 Square). 3rd cast and her first LMB.
First fish was on Jan. 1 with a blade bait. Second was on a lipless crankbait
I had 2 baits tied on. A jerkbait and a grub. I threw the jerkbait first. Caught on both.
First cast was a #3 Mepps squirrel tail. First five bass were on a single Colorado blade spinnerbait.
My first cast this year was a Red Lipless Crank,... caught a 15lb Spot as you can see in the picture
J/k
If we can make it we fish New Years Day and I always throw a shaky head that day.
A jig maybe? I don't even know and don't guess it matters. Might have been a slider grub on a 1/16th ounce jighead for crappie. Did catch a 5lb largemouth on 4lb test with that setup the first time I went out this year sometime in January
I don't even remember, first cast of the year was back on January 8th.
It's very unlikely that it'll be anything other than a weightless fluke.
Know what you mean i get mine out today, just having a few minor things done & its been in 3 weeks or longer so i retired & was gonna fish starting with prespawn, ive not even been . So much for making plans .
My first cast of the year was with a silver buddy, the last cast of my last outting was with a football jig. What I have caught fish this year on so far:
Silver buddy
Football jig
Chatterbaits
Lipless crankbait
Suspension jerkbait
A small chartreuse spinnerbait .
Fishing season ends? Not sure how there can be a first cast when there isn't a last

If you live up by me unfortunately it does. The water gets a really dense matt up on top of it and try as I might I can't get a monster 2oz punch weight to get through that matt
First bait tied on this year was a jerkbait. First fish came on said jerkbait within about 10 minutes.
Rapala shadow rap
Strike King Bitsy Bug jig 1/4 with NetBait Paca Chunk both in Green pumkin. I didn't go to catch anything rather just to cast a few and smoke a cigar (Rocky Patel Decade Robusto). Off the bank where I don't think there were any basses in attendance.
I'm planning on launching the SS Minnow this weekend and will probably start off with a shaky head or swim Jig or a jerk bait.
It was a black/blue Strike King Colorado blade spinnerbait and I caught two. But not on the first cast. One was 3.86 lb. I also caught one on a T-rigged craw. It was Jan 2. I keep a log so I can go back and check things like that. Although lately I've gotten lazy about the log. There hasn't been much to write about on my last 2 trips.

True, for areas that get a lasting ice things are a little different
