Senko replacement 2024

fishing user avatarDavisb reply :

I'm much more of a finesse fisherman than a power fisherman for bass (mainly because 90% of the bass I have caught have been on UL spinning gear) and I got some fluorocarbon for a bigger spinning reel so I can try some techniques I haven't tried like dropshotting. Which means I will be going through lots of worms. Lately I have been trying different types of worms but all of the stick baits I have tried except the super $$$$$ senkos fall incredibly slow. Does anyone know any better worms? I'm about to try out the ZMan ZinkerZ and the Yum Dingers. Do these work as well as the senkos?

fishing user avatar2tall79 reply :

I have gone to Mister Twister Comida worms for the reasons you just mentioned.  About 1/2 the price and catch just as many fish, IMHO.

I've been using these for wacky rigging.  I can catch multiple fish on the same bait.

fishing user avatarmllrtm79 reply :

I have found that the Yum Dingers seem to fall slower than the Senkos.

Cabela's brand "go-to" (I think) had a decent fall rate, but I only tried one bag of them, since I haven't made the trek back up there since last July.

fishing user avatarPoolshark reply :

The gambler ace and the bass pro stick o are excellent choices.

I've also learned to throw wacky rigged senkos on an o ring. They last ALOT longer

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

I use Bass Pro Stick-Os most of the time for wacky,

but not often for drop shot. And I never use o rings

for wacky...

For drop shot I like Yamamoto Shad Shape Worms

how does the fall rate compare to senkos? I was thinking about getting a 50ct pack when I go past bps in a couple weeks.

Very similar. I started with Senkos, tried many others

and "stuck" with the Stick-O (still use Senkos, too) as

best/closest IMO.

fishing user avatarFryDog62 reply :

I used the iconic Yamasenkos for years... got tired of $8/bag and so tried every other Senko brand known to mankind.  Found better prices but nothing that caught as many fish, or had a similar sink rate, etc.  Until I tried Kalin's Wac-O-Worm.  Similar sink rate as GYCB, more garlic scent and although very soft, last twice as long.  And almost half the price...

I consider myself more of a finesse fisherman also.  You have to learn to drop-shot.  Yamamoto shad shaped worms as @Darren. mentioned, Roboworms, Jackal Cross-Tail shad.  Those 3 will give you a nice selection of baits to try for drop shotting.

I've seen some videos where the BPS Sticko is about the closest to the Senko and a couple dollars cheaper. I use them and I love em. Just bought 9 packs cause BPS has em buy 2 get 1 free. That should last me a bit.

Haven't had much success with Roboworms, some, but

not nearly on par with the Shad Shape Worms. And not

yet tried the Cross-Tail shad. Plan on trying some new

minnow baits this year, though hard to when the SSWs

work so darn well for me.

Get some Poor Boy's Erie Darters, go with the 4".  I bet those fish haven't seen alot of those where you're at.  They are big in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.

I don't know what the heck they are supposed to represent, they work though.

fishing user avatarcottny27 reply :

I guess I call all of those stick baits a "senko".  I like the BPS brand.  They seem to be just a bit heavier than the other brands and a lot cheaper.  The soft Yamas rip up way too easy imo.

They look good. Plenty of colors.

I might just be ordering some soon...

Thanks for the tip!

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Nothing works like the original.  Some house brands are downright terrible.  I won't mention names since someone will be offended by which ones I think stink.  A couple brands I've use that work well are SK Ocho, and the Yum version.

fishing user avatarMosster47 reply :

I have posted this a couple time before, but Big Bite Baits, boil them, 5/0 EWG. It is identical to the real thing and way more durable and about twenty five cents a piece.

I'm with you on the stick-o's.  I've got a few friends that were hooked on the Yamamotos switch to the Stick-o's.  Half the cost and are more durable.

fishing user avatarcottny27 reply :

Have you all tried the Pocket Rockets from Reaction Inno.?  Found em on clearance at Academy and caught quite a few bass on just one on Sunday.  They are heavy almost a 1/2oz.

fishing user avataroffsidewing reply :

I keep coming back to senkos when I try a diffrrent brand.  As for drop shotting, I've found myself drop shotting less and Ned Rigging more in all water depths.  But the Yamamoto Shad shape worm is what I caught my PB on.

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

I've used a dump truck load of both Senkos and Stick-os. I agree that Senkos are the best. When the bite is good, a stick-o will do fine. If money or pride is on the line I will go with the original.

fishing user avatarBaitFinesse reply :

If you're wacky rigging a stick-o and would like a fall rate that matches the senko you can always opt for a 'flick shake' type jig head.  The increase in fall rate has the added bonus of elicting more action from the bait.

fishing user avatarCTBassin860 reply :

Try it out sometime.  I've been using them now with 2/0 and 3/0 mesquito hooks and I've eliminated the occasional fling off/backlash and my senkos last many more fish. It's saved me money and it makes for an effortless hookset

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

The 'Gambler Ace' is virtually indistinguishable from a Yamamoto Senko (in all respects)

That may sound like a brash overstatement, but I've put both stickworms through the paces.

I've tried, and I've also tried other methods, but I simply

prefer the simplicity of hooking perpendicular through the

bait itself with no additional gadgetry.

Now that doesn't mean I wont try again!! ^_^

fishing user avatarJDNKC reply :

Yamamotos are just better.  I will spring a few extra bucks for the good stuff.  Fishing time is limited.  Make the most of it.

I use the Yamamoto Senko a lot but like RoLo have found the Gambler Ace and Fat Ace to be a very good substitute for the Senko and is considerably cheaper.  Really like Gambler products and the Ace and Fat Ace are always in the boat when I go out

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The Fat Ika is not a replacement, but another VERY good option.

I usually do it for around 15 seconds. You don't want them to get hot enough to permanently change form, you just want to soften them up.

fishing user avatarPhilo Beddoe reply :

When fun fishing I'll go with a dinger or stik-o, but when money is on the line then it is a yamamoto for me.

the erie darters are deadly on a drop shot. also Darren your a finesse fisherman don't be afraid to put them on a light weedless jighead like the zman power shroomz and swim the slowly around cover. somethimg different... and deadly.

Why 'very salty'?   Especially since salt content and sink rate seem to be more or less directly proportional...or at least related.

These will sink even more slowly as the ZMan products typically float, or are of neutral buoyancy.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Just to add something to the brand discussion: size.

I looked up some suggestions above, e.g., Gambler Ace,

and see they start at 5", which does seem to be the most

popular size for some reason....

But I have way more success with 4" than 5" (still use 5").

So when I look for a brand, I want to know there are

at least 4 and 5" sizes. Therefore, GYCB, Stik-O are my

go-to (yes, YUM and others offer 4, but just don't dig

'em as much).

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

For drop shot rigs I prefer the Yamamoto Shad shaped worm over the regular senko. If I drop shot a senko I will use the 3" size.

Yum Sharp Shooter or Warning Shots are great cost effective drop shot baits.

I don't quite understand your curiosity over the fall rate for drop shot baits. The fall rate for these baits don't count as your drop shot sinker is going to get them to the bottom fast.

Not always true.  Let's say senkos are getting bit at 15 - 20 FOW.  They get nailed the last 18" or so of the decent.  Tie up a drop shot rig with a 24" dropper line, and expedite the first 12-18 FOW useless water. When the sinker hits the bottom, give it slack to get a natural fall the last couple feet.  I can't be the only one that does this to save time wating for the bait to get into the zone.

OG GYCB Senkos have a faster fall rate than most other brands I've compared them to.

You learn something new everyday. I will have to try that, thanks.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I quit using and buying GYCB senkos quite a few years ago now and switched to Yum dingers. I still catch as many, and as big of fish as I ever did, and regularly beat people in tournaments who say "senkos work better" with my yum dingers. What makes yum dingers the perfect stick bait IMHO is there lack of salt.......just the opposite of GYCB, yet they still have the "wiggle". The lack of salt lets me fish them uber slow weightless, to adding weight to get the rate of fall I (and the fish want).

I did an experiment a couple years ago on fall rates between 5" Yum Dingers and Senkos.

A weightless Senko falls faster and with more "wiggle" than a weightless Yum dinger.

A Dinger with a 1/16th oz wacky jig falls at the same rate, and with just as a pronounced "wiggle" as a weightless senko

A dinger with an 1/8th oz wacky jig falls slightly faster than a senko w/a 1/16th oz wacky jig, wiggle was the same.

My conclusions...............since I fish with wacky jigs 99% of the time, I go with dingers to save money, and have as little more room to play with rate of fall.

Other  stick baits I have tried that are great:

SK Ocho's

SK Zero's

Havoc Flat Dawgs

Havoc Money Makers

Big Bite Baits Cane Sticks

Z-man Zinkers

These are baits I don't care for:

BPS Stick-O's

Gander Mtn brand

Cabela's brand

Big Bite Baits Trick Stick

Wave Worms Tiki Stick

SK Shimmy sticks

Berkley Gulp Sinking minnow

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

Let me just say it is totally refreshing to see a Senko discussion not turn into a "my bait is better than your bait" argument or flat out bashing Senkos.  I can't really post a reply without my bias showing but I will tell a story.  I had a close friend (RIP) who owned a tackle store on she shores of Late St Clair, where a group of us have gathered for the last 13 years straight.  He knew my affiliation with GYCB and we had a longstanding bet of a 5th of Jack Daniels on the line.  His challenge was to find a bait that matched the Senko fall rate and action.  It was a test performed in his swimming pool.  In the 11 years we had the competition, I got a lot of free JD and never had to buy a bottle.  ;)

I will say, I do not like to Wacky Rig but I know it works.  I will also say I have had 4 inch fish bite a 5 inch Senko and finally, I do not dropshot a Senko.  That's why they make the Shad Shape Worm and the Pro Senko.  The important thing is to have confidence in whatever brand you throw.  When I guided a lot of tournament anglers, they used the knock-offs for practice and real Senkos for tournament day.
