I Am Done Buying New Lures! 2024

fishing user avatarDorado reply :

Said just about everybody on this forum :) Listen, I had a deep realization this morning that I am actually handicapping my progress embarking this exciting new endeavor of being a bass angler. I'm constantly keeping up with the 'Benjamin's'  or convincing myself that this new lure/soft plastic that I read somebody's reviews on (especially soft plastics :/ - thanks Crappies) will be the answer to my riddle. For example, nice try Al Lindner.......you almost had me with the new Storm GT360 yesterday........don't worry, you're still my icon.  What's the irony here?

I said that last week when I picked up some new Reins bubbling shaker. I said that the week before when I almost pulled the trigger on a couple of the 60+ colored cranks Norman offers. The week before that, my insecurity drove me to the extreme of picking up more Z-Man TRDs that I didn't have the color of. Guess what? I have WAY more brand new, never been opened, packages that keep getting piled on with new impulsive buys haha! (spoiler alert: I have yet to use any of those aforementioned products sad huh)

I'm being a little dramatic here, but me cutting myself off from buying any new lures for the rest of this year will force me to: 1) improve on techniques with the unopened toys I already have 2) save $$$ 3) be more grateful of the arsenal of countless combinations I can muster 4) save $$$ again. And who knows.......maybe Woody doesn't have to be replaced by Buzzlightyear every week......what if what's never been opened yet is the golden ticket to all these waters all along?

Sorry marketers, I just ruined your day I know I know. Don't worry though.........plenty other fish in the sea haha.

This was not intended to be a rant, actually sharing a huge personal flaw that I need to curb; but more of a way to get this off my chest and bring some humor to the end of a stressful workday. Tight lines!

fishing user avatarTheRodFather reply :

Best of luck......:)

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

Good luck. I have enough tackle that I could probably fish the rest of my life without buying anything new. What would be the fun of that?:confused-8:

fishing user avatarthebillsman reply :

I tend to agree with you.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

@Dorado ~ Perhaps try this approach.

Once you're caught at least one legal keeper bass on Every Plug & Bait you have in your own personal arsenal, then it may be time to expand.

Other wise, double down and get to fishing.

I will admit that I however did not adhere to that particular mantra - and even if I started to now, and did somehow manage to stick with it faithfully, I still wouldn't be buying anything new for several years, & Years & Years  ..   ..  well, you get the point.

Best of Luck to you though  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..

A-Jay

fishing user avatarYakalong reply :

For lent I will give up buying new lures. (Luckily I was at bps prior to lent) :occasion14:

fishing user avatarwhitwolf reply :

If I had a dollar for everytime I said I wouldn't buy anything new I would have thousands to buy more baits. Just sayin'. :)

fishing user avatarlo n slo reply :

i just ordered 35 bags of lizards

fishing user avatarIndianaFinesse reply :

Good idea, just stay out of the sale thread and tackle purchase thread.  How long do you all think it's going to last?

fishing user avatarwdp reply :

@Dorado Man I hear what you're saying. I got so much unopened tackle that I could open my own tackle store, lol.

How many of us have done this? Browsing the aisles of a local sporting goods store, we go Wow! Look! Zoom super flukes on sale. I need 3 packs of this color. Only to get home and rift thru our baits to see we already got 4 packs of super flukes in said color. Lol! Yeah I'm guilty. ?

The problem is buying new baits & tackle & gear is so much fun.

It sure is fun! It's like a hobby on its own. I just can't tell my wife that adding more shoes to her extensive shoe collection is also a hobby !

Until tomorrow haha. Jk I'm disciplined when I need to.... it's like getting back in shape or a diet ..... do I want to? H{+$ no! But if it's going to make a positive difference than I'm good with the sacrifices.

? Yep. Luckily I got a pretty understanding wife.

fishing user avatarYeajray231 reply :

It's fun catching bass on new things.. that's why I buy them.. others like rapala, I collect.  Maybe my kids will be into fishing and they can inherit my hoard. Or maybe I'll get buried with them.. worst case scenario I pass and they end up in a garage sale/flea market.

But hey. They sure look purdy in my tackle box(es) . I think imma go look at them now.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

I tip my hat to your assertive spirit, you remind me of myself.
On the downside, I've arrived at this same crossroads before it ever crossed your mind.
Trust me when I say, there'll be many more crossroads my friend

fishing user avatarNCbassraider reply :

I've had that talk with myself a hundred times.  Thought about it last week then spent $75 on 3 jerk baits.  Already had one of them but it was covered in teeth marks.

It's a relatively cheap addiction...that's the other thing I tell myself a lot.

Not much fun for an industry designed to take money out of your pocket and put in their bank account for sure! Party pooper!

fishing user avatarpaul. reply :

in honor of your ironclad willpower,  i too will set a new record in FPA (fishing purchase abstinence). starting now.

whew, man that was brutal!  didn't think i'd make it there for a while.

toughest 3 seconds of my life!

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

I've thought this too but it's hard to stop, especially since I think it's good karma to visit a local tackle shop every month or two and spend some money there and keep in touch with the staff.

Now I just look at it as stocking up for retirement, because once I'm on a fixed income I won't have as much to spend on fishing stuff.  Buy now so I have what I need later!

fishing user avatarFun4Me reply :

Quitter :P

fishing user avatarjdz197 reply :

The key to fixing that 'unopened packages of lures' problem is buying even MORE tackleboxes

fishing user avatarBigSkyBasser reply :

I empathize and relate as much as anyone. I just got done buying $150 worth of new jerkbaits....and while organizing found out that I have already about 15 suspending and floating jerkbaits that I have yet to fish and had completely forgotten all about.

I took the same pledge Dorado. Its a shame I broke it days later. Hope it works out better for you than it did for me. Check out the bait monkey thread. Then you'll see just how powerful this addiction is.

Well, I can probably go without buying new lures, but I still need more storage boxes to finish organizing what I already HAVE.

Good luck brother bass fisherman.

I'm doing something the same somewhat.  I promised myself to not buy "new in the market lures".  I went through all my tackle last week and many unopened packages that I realize I probably will never use.  What my plan is from now on is to focus my spending on the tackle I will use daily and not fall for the new shiny things.  ?

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I Am Done Buying New Lures!

Say that every time I walk out a tackle shop ;)

fishing user avatarKyhokie reply :

I totally understand your sentiment, and i felt the same way myself, many times. I sat down and tried to understand why, as a grown man, i could literally not stop myself from buying new fishing lures, rods and reels. I rest much easier now that i realized im not buying lures and tackle because it helps me to catch more fish, i buy all this unnecessary gear, because I enjoy fishing, and ALL it entails.  I also enjoy cooking, but i like eating and buying the groceries almost as much. Buying lures and organizing is a part of fishing. It took me getting outfished by an old timer, tossing a manns manipulator, all day, with a zebco 33 to realize this. Upon leaving the water with my old fishing partner, i really felt sorry for him. I found myself questioning "why feel bad for a guy who just outfished you 3 to 1?" I answered myself when i asked internally, "what does he sit around and organize when hes not fishing? Poor old wretched lol" Now....does anyone know who still sells Manipulators in red shad? I really need my fix this morning LOL!

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

I have enough lures to easily last me the rest of my life .  But I still purchase new lures if  I feel they will fill a niche . Red Eye Shad for example . I have plenty of other lipless baits , but when I read the RES shimmys on the drop I had to try them .This winter its the Berkely Dredger that I had to get .

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

Its called the bait monkey.  He is always on our backs.

I havent been bad lately.  Im pretty well stocked for a couple years.  I sell unused baits and trash rusted jigs spinnerbaits and hooks.  The items I sell go towards buying higher end lures so I buy less and use it more

fishing user avatarking fisher reply :

My therapist- girlfriend, tried  to help me kick the lure buying habit.  I fired them both.  In the end, the person with the most lures wins.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

You are definitely on the right track. Do you want to catch fish, or be a collector? You can certainly be both, but one's just harder than the other.

fishing user avatarWI_Angler1989 reply :

Hear hear! I wish you luck, sir. Personally, I'm one of the lucky few over whom the "Bait Monkey" has little influence. Now don't get me wrong, I still drool and ogle at stuff plenty, but I limit my new lure buying to tax season/late winter. The rest of the year is all about restocking what's hot.

fishing user avatarRobeng reply :

Dorado and all.....I agree.  Same boat, same issues.  I too have sworn off new baits.  May need to replace some tackle, but NO baits.  I want a newer boat and SHE wants the cottage.  A couple more years till retirement so I might have to sell some of the gear to grab some money for a new garden hose.  LOL

I can help you out...take only one type of lure and fish it all year. Next year pick another type and repeat. This is what Mike Iaconelli did when he was young. It'll help you through your addiction, you'll get to know every lure inside and out, save you money, and will for sure make you a pro! J/K he did do this though, I'm not sure I'd have the patience to do it. Maybe that's why he's a pro and I'm nowhere close!

Good luck with that, I've said it many times too, but the bait monkey always finds me. He's just too dang good for me to stop him. Maybe I'll be able to resist some day, ha who am I kidding!?

fishing user avatarUPSmallie reply :

Good luck man.  Just digging through your older lures you might find something special.  Case in point last summer I threw all my proven baits and lures at one of my honey holes for 2 hours and nothing.  Tied on one of those older vintage Little Cleos on that was 2 inches long that I had never fished before.  First cast got me a 31 inch pike and 2nd cast resulted in a 15 inch smallmouth bass.  It turned my day from a skunk into a heck of a fish fry.  Sadly I misplaced the lure somewhere.

fishing user avatarBaitMonkey1984 reply :

I did not renew my MTB Pro Box subscription after  one year. I have run out of room in my two boats, and my garage to store any more baits. As my username alludes to, I have an issue with baits. Two years ago I bought 1000s of TRD baits and jig heads. Since then, I have only rarely purchased baits. I have not purchased anything in two months. First time in 10 years I have gone more than 3 days without buying something off TW. I ran out of room to store them and realize that I really don't need any new lures. The whopper plopper intrigued me for a little bit and I almost bough a Plano 3700 full of them, but I realized that I don't need every bait ever created. Once, I came to that mindset I look at what I have and realistically do not need to buy anything, evenly go to baits, for several years. A friends stepbrother who's about 15 likes to fish, and I take him out a few times a year, I have already decided he's getting a tacklebox or two full of baits  to take home next trip out.

Let's see who can still fish multiple days a week and not buy any new lures. Anyone want in on this challenge?

I'm curious what 1000 bags of TRD baits look like!  Someone should start a bait monkey rehabilitation thread, by posting all of their fishing stuff for everyone to see in full shame.

fishing user avatarFryDog62 reply :

I too am a victim of the bait monkey and have too many things that I won't use.  Part of my problem is the emergence of the online retailers.

I'll order plastics that look great on the web and then receive them from the UPS guy (who I've become best friends with now) and the color is not what I thought.  I end up ordering another color I like better and think I'll eventually use the first order but never do...

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

I am planning on stopping now friends the season, and finders out what I uses and just look at.  Last yr I was very content with a handful of jig, swimmers, cranks and worms.

What doesn't get used this summer will be g vendors to my kids and I will replace what I have confidence in.......really!

Check out those Reins bubbling shakers on a Neko rig. They look amazing.

stay off the fishing forums until winter and fish what you got. my big spending is late fall to early spring. weakness is rods vs lures.

I've got my Shimano Stradic FK 2500 on my St Croix Legend Tournament Bass 610mlxf rod, a 560$ combo, and yet I STILL can't help wanting a Legend Xtreme.... it's a problem.

Also, 560$ seems kinda insane now that I typed it out haha

fishing user avatarBassguytom reply :

I'm right there wth you. I have an addictive personality and have more tackle and lures then I could ever use. I kind of like coming home from work and finding a tackle warehouse box on the counter. It kind of rounds out my day nicely. I keep telling my wife it's better then smoking crack but she is starting to give me the evil eye. She even said it's either me or the tackle. I sure am going to miss her. Lol.

Fly fishing is my other passion and I won't even discuss how many fly boxes I have. And I only fly fish the Southwest too

fishing user avatarsnake95 reply :

My problem is stopping at just one (or two, or any multiple of those numbers...).

I try to mitigate the damage by having a policy of only buying on sale.  But there sure are a lot of sales throughout the year!

Now, when there is a deep discount in a store I try to tell myself that it's not ethical to clear a place out when some other guys will miss out on the same deal and the baits will actually just sit in a box in my attic for a couple of years.  Sometimes that works.

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

Trying new things is great for sure. Never will there be a magic bait as no one presentation is the best in all conditions. I am laying off the lure buying to save up for new sonars. Only will be buying what I lose.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I gave myself that talk just this week then somehow talked myself into ordering $300 worth of big swimbaits! I have no self restraint and i admit it......

fishing user avatarBass fishing is best reply :

Lures are meant to catch fisherman more than fish.

fishing user avatarChrisD46 reply :

Let me introduce you to my little friend ... "The Bait Monkey" !

fishing user avatarstevelbuchanan reply :

If you're not going to cast it on your next trip out, don't buy it.

If you're trying to cast everything thing in your box every trip out, limit your box to 6-7 lures.

Buy plastic worms...buy any color...as long as it's purple ?

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

I gave up lying to myself a long time ago.  Of course I'm going to purchase more fishing stuff, and not just replacements for stuff that I go through.  I just try to exercise some restraint.   Last week I went into Academy just to "look around" at stuff I might need and I came out with . . .nothing.

In a couple of weeks my favorite tackle shop is having their spring sale and the Berkley Trailer will be there and it is unlikely that I will walk away without any purchases.

Last year I got a couple of spinner bait rods that matched my current favorite spinner bait rod.   If I could find another couple of 7'2" Aetos MHxf jig rods I would buy them.

fishing user avatarNcflats reply :

Told myself last week that I was done buying. Now I'm expecting 4 different boxes full of tackle any day now at my front door. It's an addiction...but it could always be much worse. I enjoy playing with tackle just as much as the catching. Ebay does not help the problem and all these new lures popping up in the stores this time of year makes it almost impossible to say no.

fishing user avatarimagine29028 reply :

My first step which I recently came to....only buy baits from a few manufacturers.

As as far as plastics go...is there anything that Zoom or Berkley don't make? Nope...and they are in every single shop/store, so running out isn't a big deal.  Limit the colors to the color water you fish...Green Pumpkin, B&B, Junebug, maybe something red?

Hardbaits...Strike King makes it all...at reasonable price. I don't need a $20 crankbait, that I probably lose.

Hopefully this his method helps me keep $$$ in my wallet and not in my tackle bag.
