Well as the topic states, I was interested in what everyone goes to when everything they seem to be throwing fails them. For me personally I would have to say a 1-2inch white grub on a 1/16 oz jig head. Seems to catch anything and everything.
jointed rapala shad rap...whether the water is 38 degrees (like today) or 70 degrees in the summer, this lure produces when all else fails. For me anyway..
Usually a 4in BPS Stik-o on a 1/16 shaky head. Seems to always produce. Lately though, it's been my Spro Aruku Shad in perch color.
Watermelon seed colored fluke rigged any way that works for the current situations.
Pitching a 3/8 oz. booyah boo jig w/ a berkley chigger craw as a trailer in and around cover. Always produces for me, even in the heat of the summer.
Hrrmm, I'd have to say Husky Jerk (HJ12) in silver. It's a bait I fish year round and can elicit fish into. I guess it just goes along the lines of use what you're confident in.
6 inch purple robo worm.... catches fish no matter how bad the conditions are.
Smokin Shad colored Fluke. 8lb fluoro, swivel, 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG. Catches fish 60% of the time....ALL THE TIME
Stickbait (senko) wacky rigged, any color for the conditions but my favs are watermelon chart flake, Green Pumpkin Gold flake, or salt and pepper!
Drop shot.
Think about what you're asking. If your "go to bait" is what you use when ALL ELSE fails., then why not just start out using it?
Usually a 3/8 green pumkin jig. I think i'm going to start throwing chiggercraws a lot more though.
QuoteThink about what you're asking. If your "go to bait" is what you use when ALL ELSE fails., then why not just start out using it?
What's the fun in that? ;D I wanna catch bass how I wanna catch bass.
A 4.5" straight tail Roboworm, on a shaky jig is my fail-safe.
Texas Rigged Gene Larew 7 ½ Salty Ring Worm Cinnamon Pepper Neon/June Bug Laminated (Camouflage).
Mustad 3/0 Straight Shank Denny Brauer Flipping Hook P/N:32807BLNU32
3/16 oz. Bullet weight (painted black)
Berkley Big Game 15# Mean Green
I don't have one. Have yet to find a bait that works well in all seasons, under all conditions.
Some will only produce well at certain times. Others may produce during more conditions, but I have none that consistently outfish all the other baits I have.
If they did, I'd fish that lure/bait exclusively. I try to find what the fish want, not force feed them the bait I want to use.
I do have a few "favorites". But, there are times I will not even try them.
1/4oz finesse jig, natural color, 3" matching craw trailer
4 or 5 inch straight tailed worm on shakey jig

There is no fun in catching fish one way all the time. I like fishing new ways and learning new things and styles of fishing

who wants to use a senko all the time?
Culprit crawdad worm.
3" Senko or Dinger on a 1/16 oz Mushroomhead jig, great bait for tough conditions.
Zoom Trick Worm.
1. Shaky head Strike King 3X Finesse worm (dirt or black/blue)
2. Weightless 3/0 EWG Gama Strike King 3X Zero (new money/junebug)
a 3/8ths oz spinnerbait with the skirt replaced with a 3 1/2" pearl with chartreuse back money minnow. silver willow gold colorado.
The lakes I fish:
Dropshot
Jigs
Shakeyhead
What I fish 90% of the time:
Jigs
Dropshot
Shakeyhead
The other 10%:
cranks, ripbaits, swimbaits
I have fun trying different lures and techniques, but if I get nothing, I will revert to my younger years and throw a beetlespin. It will almost always produce at least a strike.
if all else fails i go t-rig junebug worm
senko
I'll have some new baits to try this year, including some new custom made cranks that I'm real excited about. I'll try to use what I think will do best under the conditions at hand, but my best producing baits lately on the watersheds I fish are the Zoom mag2 watermellon/red ( 10lb. fluroclear, 1/8oz tru-tungstein, Gama 3/0), Roboworm 71/2" robotail redcrawler or Aarons magic ( same set up), a Bomber 6a or 7a redfire crawdad ( red/chart.)
Go to bait would depend on timeof year:
Early Spring- #5 Shad rap
Mid to late spring- 8" Zoom Lizard on C-Rig
Summer- T-Rigged Ole Monster
Fall- 1/4 oz finesse jig with Craw Papi trailer
Tubes.... No other lure is as versatile as a tube.
1/8 Football Jig - Brown/Orange w/ craw trailer
3/16 Spider Slider Head w/ 4" str. tail worm (either Brewers or Berkley)
Hard Bait = SK Red Eye Shad
Soft Bait = GYCB Fat Ika
Color depends on water conditions.
A watermelon/red flake Zoom finesse worm.
I'm also going with a tube.. it can be fished like a jig, you can swim it or even use it as a topwater. Most versatile lure IMO. I do throw jigs the most though all year long.
T-rigged Zoom Mag II in Junebug color right in the thickest cover.
here lately....stupid senko.
normally....black culprit worm.
when i can't catch em on anything else i go to my finesse rig...
zoom 4" french fry in green pumpkin wacky-rigged on a tru tungsten shakey...
gets em everytime ;D
Everyone says senko, me personally never have as much luck using them as I do a brush hog or lizzard. Whats the best technique for senko in a small lake?

Last year it was a 3/8 jig.
don't have a lure that works 60% of the time, all the time....but I do have a few that I'm always sure to throw, regardless of conditions. One is a shakey head, usually a 6'' Finesse Worm in Watermelon/Purple Swirl or a Roboworm in Martens Magic. The other is an Owner Cultiva rip'n minnow 65sp in Blue Ghost or Black Pearl, caught fish all last year on it.
shaky head with 4" zoom finesse worm, green pumpkin, with the tip of the tail dipped in JJ's Magic chartreuse. my one and only panic bait.
5 inch wacky rigged senko
There are days when I can almost smell impending doom,
days when we find ourselves counting bites instead of bass
One lure in particular though, has often got the skunk out of our boat.
Gambler Big Stick (7.0 Shadow Blue Glitter) <> Owner Type-Z Bullet Head (3/16oz 3/0 Hook)
Slow bottom-drag using double-twitches and pauses.
Roger
The "jig worm" has saved the day many times for me.
Shakey head with somet type of finesse plastic. Also dropshot. 8-)
Definitely a tube jig.
and 3 inch senko rigged weigtless on a medium spinning rod with 10 lb power pro
Castaic Original Hardhead Threadfin Shad
Tarzan.
"Baaaa-BA....Baaaa-Ba...."
4.75 houdini worm on a 1/8 shakey head
4 inch senko or a zoom finesse worm - june bug, watermelon, and/or black. Not necessarily in that order.
a trickworm or something similar to a trickworm, weightless, dropshotted, t-rigged, or shakeyheaded, so many options...plus it will catch a 6-12in bass when i cant get anything else ;D
A Zoom finesse worm
Zoom trick tail worm,watermelon/chart. Texas rigged with a 1/16 oz. worm weight.
A watermelon gold flake or smoke red flake finesse tube on a 1/16 oz tube jig, or a 1/16 oz. jigworm with black 4" curl tail worm.
When all else "fails" I get out my Coors Light- Blue Mnts (Ice cold) , all gets better after that
Rooster Tail. If I can't catch anything on another lure, then I will be satisfied no matter what I catch on a Rooster Tail.
Pearl white or smokin' shad fluke.
zoom u-tail worm in watermelon seed. weightless...
Original Rapala. I have all the sizes I think, some times simple things get the job done.
A zoom 4" dead ringer.....Watermelonseed or pumpkin green.
watermelon senko wacky rigged. any time, all the time always works for me.
I would say that right now my go to baits are a Luck E Strike Hollow Belly Swim bait, the other is a Shakey Head jig and a 5 or six inch finesse worm or a craw fish. My favorite worm is a Zoom finesse worm in watermelon red, as for the craw fish, I like a Zoom Speed Craw.
Although those are my favorites now, I plan on using more techniques this year and I hope that I find a new go to bait/presentaion!
Like others while I'm not sure I have one go-to bait, I always have a few things ready to go.
1. shakeyhead/Trickworm
2. 5 3/8" or 6" Stick-o wackyrigged from weightless up to a 1/8 oz jig
3. t-rigged plastic or a jig/spider grub combo
4. skirted jig/Paca chunk or craw
If nothing else is working, either 1 or 2 will get the most work.
Movarus said a fluke watermelon and he's right !!!!!
You can texas rig it... put it on weighted hook and let it go deep... work it close to the top.. anything you wanna do with it... if they ain't biting that go home !!!
my #1 lure for small lakes.........
Gotta stick a senko in there as well.... it's as deadly as a fluke.......... I like most senkos but now I'm sold on the Shimmey stick only at wal mart $2.99 ... give them a try..........
Weightless 5" Watermelon/Pearl Lamanite Dinger/Trick Stick. This thing has saved the day for me numerous times, and its especially adapt at pullin' in bigger bass.
