How often do you lose deep diving crankbaits? 2024

fishing user avatarJunk Fisherman reply :

Just curious- how often do you lose these baits?  Compare it to other baits you throw.  Thanks.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Maybe 1 or 2 a season, if that.

The Plug Knocker is your friend.

If I didn't use a trace of wire leader, I'd most likely lose half the baits I throw - especially the $$$ ones.

fishing user avatarComfortably Numb reply :

Never, but I dont throw them either :)

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

Almost never with a plug knocker.

Only baits I lose anymore are soft plastics and jigs

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

Only a couple as I have been known to strip down and swim for my favorites.

Last Summer I was lucky.  I swam  for one and the first after I dried off, I caught a new PB

fishing user avatarSwbass15 reply :

3-4 a year, but I fish an extremely rocky lake and they hang up something bad. Actually lost a plug knocker too.

Wonder what a plug knocker for a plug knock would have to look like  . . . . .

Same one I got, have lost very few deep diving lures. I put mine on the end of a dog lease.

fishing user avatarOregon Native reply :

My favorite is Bill Dance knocker with the chains....rare day when I leave a crank in the lake.  Also like to pour some 2 oz egg sinkers with a wire on end with a loop that i attach a duolock.  Great for getting back plastics and jigs...not as reliable though....but works well.

fishing user avatarBucky205 reply :

I tend to hang them up a lot because of where I throw them.  Don't lose very many because of a plug knocker.  A lure retriever/plug knocker is the best $4.99 investment I have ever made.

Excluding soft plastics and jigs, I don't think I have lost a single lure in several years.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

Hardly ever, but I use 17lb CXX too so . . . .

fishing user avatarRick Howard reply :

Quite a few to pike.  I don't fish cranks very often but sometimes its just the best tool available.  I lose more jigs than anything else.  Its the nature of jig fishing to me and I fish jigs more than anything else too.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I lose a couple to northerns.  A plug knocker resolves any hang up issues.

fishing user avatarIndianaFinesse reply :

I only lose 2-3 a year, and most of those are to pleasure boaters running over my line on a long cast:angry:.  I would lose a lot more if I didn't use an 18' extendable pole style lure retriever though.

Can you recommend a specific plug knocker?

fishing user avatarMunkin reply :

About one every 5 years thanks to the Bill Dance lure retriever. Actually I break 3 times as many baits bouncing them off the TM head than I lose.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

I have a home made plug knocker/retreiver for about 40 years that is 6 oz lead weight with sash chain similar to the Bill Dance retreiver shown above.

Losing a few crankbaits after hanging up in brush, trees, chain link fences etc happens, usually the retreiver frees them. Night fishing is when I have more lost crankbaits because of poor depth perception casting into trees on the shore I didn't see well or a bass diving through submerged trees or around dock cables and breaking off.

Excellent might have to pick up a few, how does it do?

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I don't think I have lost one this year thanks to the lure retriever, and the plug knocker.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

There are five different models and they dive quickly and stay deep . I've used them a lot this year and have caught fish on all five  from about 6 foot to 22 foot .

I use the one from Academy for $4.99.  I use a 10" piece of old swim noodle to keep my line wrapped on.  Not above throwing it overboard to mark a spot as well.  The secret is to keep your line tight as the knocker slides down your line and give your line slack right when the knocker hits the lure.  The more over the lure you can get the easier it comes loose.

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

I lost two this season, both fishing at night and both were due to toothy critters.  I'm going to loose at least a dozen next year as I'm all but eliminating their use in the future and will be selling them off.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Dang y'all good!

Kinda like jigs, I can fish em all week & not lose one & then lose 3 or 4 in a day with a plug knocker!

I've lost 5-6 this year and I have a knocker. Usually in brush piles I'm not aware of. It sucks but part of it I suppose.

Exact same for me too. The lure retriever was a fantastic investment.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Haven’t lost one in years.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I rarely fish them, so I don't have to worry about losing them :)

Now jigs on the other hand

fishing user avatarGrumpyOlPhartte reply :

Heck, I’ve never lost a plug. I know right where each of them is! Now getting to them ...  (Well, that’s not exactly true. There is one Whopper Plopper that swam off with a nice bass that could be anywhere. Just hope he was able to shake it loose.)

fishing user avatarOutdoors reply :

Rarely ever, but I only throw them around the middle of the lake... with no stumps or anything sticking up. I'm paranoid that if I did, I'd hang a root or something.

fishing user avatarBassNJake reply :

I'm with the majority here that have only lost a couple over the past few years because of the plug knocker.

I got my plug knocker hung up in a tree once so i had to tie it off and went back the next week to use the new one to get the old one back.

Chicken ? ......

fishing user avatarJunk Fisherman reply :

How many of you guys are making constant bottom contact?  Sure, if you are fishing a grass lake and running cranks right above the grass or fishing sandy bottom lakes I understand never losing any.  But what about dredging cranks down ledges, through rock, and through brush?  Do these big lips really let you deflect off brush and laydowns so you won't get hung very often?   Thanks for the replies.

I make sure they are making bottom contact . Not a lot deep of brush  where I fish , Lots of stumps though . No challenge for a plug knocker . Getting tangled in fishing line is what  gets me .

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I used a lure retriever years ago from the low bridge it worked. My problem can be those diving trees they time it right to dive and catch my lures. They can move in front of me at anytime.
