Anybody seen this thing? I wasn't sure how it would work at first but after seeing it in action it looks like it would be a really effective bait. Who hasn't had a fish blast a popper or just follow it to the boat after giving up on a retrieve and cranking it back in? Seems like this might be a great way to get those fish to commit when they're just following or not quite willing to break the surface to eat a bait, or maybe the bait taking off all the sudden triggers a reaction when they think it's making a run for it. I'm thinking it's one I'm going to have to give a try myself.
Interesting. Looking at the diving lip I would've thought it might dive 8" to 1 ft max. Def could be versatile.
Seems like a cool idea. I use a Jackall Binsky - it does not have a lip so it doesn't dive very deep, but it has a blade on the bottom and a rear prop and I have caught fish while just cranking it back at the end of a retrieve like you described above.
I like ice cream, and I like Ketchup®, but....
I like the look of that. I just may have to try one as well.
That looks different enough to try, I sometimes fish a J-7 Rapala like that with a jerky retrieve so the lure is constantly breaking the surface and diving.
Shouldn't they have announced this April 1st...
It's interesting, but not for me. I work poppers very quickly and I think this would dive to much when I wanted a walking popper. Also seems like the cupped mouth would catch weeds badly
And I just got done saying that I was done buying for a while.Looks like I lied to myself again. That thing is going to be killer spring through fall.
Sold. Love the concept. Pop it and crank over the weeds. Should be a killer for the fishing I like to do.
I ordered two of them yesterday, one in Bone and the other in X-Ray. At $10 they are in the middle of the road for pricing and I think I only have a pair of normal poppers in the collection as is.
Great idea. I just built a rod specifically for small poppers, and other small top water baits. Have yet to try it out. This looks like a great bait for my new rod's maiden voyage.
Nope, I ain't buying it. First the whopper plopper, now this. Nope. No more. I'm out. I'll stick to my rubber worms. They may only do one thing but they do it right and they work.

This makes me sad. When you are done playing with those, I've got some straight from Japan Yellow Magics (before the US licensing deal that ruined them) for you to try right after the spawn.
Hah, I would love to take you up on that!
I only started using hard baits, other then spinners, for bass this fall. I would use them for perch and stripers but my casting accuracy was not quite up to the task of throwing them around cover in freshwater. I figured I would start with topwaters and shallow cranks so I can see where I am running them.
dang thing actually looks really good swimming under the surface

Would you be willing to explain your ideal of a rod specifically for this new Prank topwater, I just got one and would like to learn which rod, reel, line etc to use to make this the most effective bait it can be! Your input would be greatly appreciated!
6'6"-6'10" MF rod,7.x:1 baitcaster spooled with 12# Yo-Zuri Hybrid/13# Defier Armilo/or your favorite mono.

To me, lures are just tools to perform a specific job you need done under specific circumstances. Trying to combine a hammer with a saw just doesn't do it for me.
Sure, but the guy who first combined a nail-driver with a nail-puller into one tool was a smart guy!
Last Friday, at the Classic weigh-in, I was fortunate to sit next to the engineer who designed this lure. He was pretty excited about it and mentioned the work that went into it and how he would take Jason Christie's on water evaluation & input to continually refine it. He was hoping that Christie would have a day like Randy Howell did with his new Livingston bait a few Classics back to give the initial offering a kickoff. If that happened, he said he would have to call the manufacturing plant and tell them to get ready and hang on...

Ok then, I'm sold. How do I glue these together...

I think I would attach the crank bait behind the popper, but I'm just spitballing ideas here.
If ever stops raining I'll try the Pranks I bought out tomorrow and try to report back. I suspect the water everywhere will be the consistency of chocolate milk, so I don't think I'm going to have much luck with them.

I was out today for an hour, caught 3, biggest 2 lbs. I brought out some louder and brighter lures than I usually throw, but the water was surprisingly clear. I hate fishing weekends, but I may go somewhere tomorrow.
Friend posted this fishing them, hoping to get out tomorrow to try them myself.
Prank vid
The fat guy looks like Hackney.
In fishing there is a fine line between Gimmick and Innovation, and to me this is 100% Gimmick. I feel like just because you take 2 time tested lures that work, you can't necessarily combine them and make a incredible lure. Wait till next year at the Classic when they debut the Prank2, the buzzbait/crankbait hybrid
I fished one for a bit today. ML/RF GoEmotion rod, sv105hs, 11lb Defiler mono.
All in all I am not super impressed. It was very hard to get the Prank to pop as compared to the Pop-R I was switching it up with. Now, with my lack of experience with poppers I was also having trouble getting the Pop-R to pop, I would not take my lack of success with the Prank as gospel. But, it was much more difficult to get it to pop on the surface and most rod movements sent it diving. As a diving lure, I liked it a lot more. It has a much more aggressive action than a J-7 Rapala when run at the same speeds, but the Prank is far easier to burn just subsurface, which I really did like.
If I can work with it and get more consistent popping, then I think the lure will have a place in my box, if not then it is just an expensive J-7, which is less appealing to me.

My offer still stands, once the water warms up a bit, we'll go popping (splishing actually) .
Got out today, 7 decent pickerel and one dink bass on a Long A and spinerbait. Seeing nests and cleared out areas everywhere. Wind was up and from the wrong direction for my good spot.
Next... a suspending buzzbait
I'm not really feeling that bait. Seems like just somthing they'll try to sell us fisherman.
Zell Roland developed this lure it's going to work!

I would love to take you up on that, I will shoot you a PM when I am back in town.
A lot of folks laughed at the Whopper Plopper too...

So the guy that carved out the bottom lip of the POP-R is now putting a long one on it. SOLD!
I just tried out one of these on the South Branch of the Potomac at the head of a pool just outside the fast water. Had a big bass come up an take a shot three times, I hooked him the third try and was rewarded with a 20 inch smallmouth on a BFS set up. The rod was maxed out and I couldn't move well because of the stream bottom rocks. Quite a brute.
Landed a couple more smallmouth at the bottom end of the pool earlier in the 14 and 16 inch range. I love top water lures.
I can make it pop easily and it swims back great.
Seems to work quite well for me, but maybe I was lucky which I will take over skill any day.
I bought one and am a big fan. I fish a bang o lure a lot since it allows me to fish it topwater, and while reeling in.
This bait gives a good option to work on top near cover, then fish as a shallow crank in the open water
What colors do you guys use? I'm kinda leaning towards the Moonphase Shad and the Summer Gill colors.

I have the X-ray color.
I have crushed bone, bone shiner and summer gill although I don't really know if that makes a difference.

Funny seeing some talk about the lack of innovation on the icast thread and some of the comments here. Some will see innovative as a gimmick until it is proven. Not sure the plopper is the best example since that style of Musky lure has been around for quite a while:), but it is a new thing for bass guys.
For me this thing looks like a good idea, and I would have to believe tha they tested the lure before they shipped it to ensure it does what they claim.
I have had a little more time with this lure and am impressed with it enough to buy a few more.
I still can't get it to pop very well at all, but it has been working great for me as a shallow crank. When I first got it I thought it was too similar to a J-7 Rapala, but after using one for a while I am liking it more and more. Even ripping it back, it stays very shallow and has a very tight wiggle. I have had a few great days on them and will be picking up a few more once the colors I like come back in stock.
