From what I've read, people either really love Mepps spinners or hate them. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Mepps, and if so, what are your thoughts?
I just ordered a couple of them from Cabelas.
Wayne
Love them and use them all the time!!
Not sure why anyone would hate them. Except that river smallmouth are so good at jumping and throwing them back at me. I use plain #5’s for pike and plain 4’s for smallies. The squirrel tail versions don’t get me any more bites, but they do take a bigger bite out of my wallet.
I use ‘em up in the mountains for trout.
#1 & #2 Mepps Comets are a mainstay for me on my UL or ML rigs for panfish. #3 and #4 for 'eatin-size' bass.
#4 Comet Minnow /Shad is a good fall seasonal bass lure over looked by most anglers.

I've used Aglias for 35+ years for pike (#5), bass (#5 and #3) and crappie (#2). I also use the Aglia Long, because it seems to do the same thing as a Roostertail but starts spinning easier.
The only people I've ever seen hate them are people who stubbornly refuse to use a good b-b swivel with them .... or any other in-line spinner .... or who drop them down slow over cover and then get upset when they snag up.
Simply put, they catch fish. "Nuff said. jj

Blue Fox minnows - 5 colors but max out at #2 (1/4 oz)
Mepps Comet - only 4 colors but go to #5 (1/2 oz).
For me - advantage Mepps
Everyone loves Mepps. Super classic lure. All sizes and models are excellent.
Hadn't thrown one in a long time but recently broke them out to toss in creeks to catch whatever would bite. Remembering how fun they are to fish, especially when I get to watch my son get a hold of something like this on one.
I love a gold inline mepps, undressed, #3-4. My only issue is the line twist they can cause, so I use a swivel with them.
Inline spinners are great multispecies baits. I troll with them in gravel pits and you never know what you'll be reeling in next.
Love a good in-line spinner. Mepps is one of my favorite brands up there with Panther Martin and Blue Fox.

Panther Martin caught me lots of fish when living in Montana

Great lure on the river over the years. I do not fish it as much as I have in the past. River “Classic” in my opinion.
Sort of feel like I cut my teeth on creek and river smallies with Mepps spinners.
I’ve always associated Mepps to bass fishing and Panther Martins and Roostertails to trout. No real truth to that though. Mepps makes some nice trout spinners.
In #’s 3,4 and 5’s the Anglia color patterns seem endless. Majority of mine are dressed.
Geez, I haven't thrown a Mepps since 1967. Maybe I'll give em another try.

Yes you should
This 5 pounder with a Mepps Black Fury on an 8' Avid ML/Mod rod 8# nanofil, awesome rod.
I love Mepps and Rooster tails. They are one of my winter go to baits, and you never know what you will catch on them.

use 'em when the bite is sloooow and the water is clear mostly in open water scenarios ... with spinning gear ...
like the slim profile and will sometimes downsize to 1/8th on 6lb. test mono ...
good fishing ...
I'd love to see anybody step up and say they HATE mepps spinners lol.

Do you hate all in-line spinners or just mepps ? I've personally caught bass, pike, perch, crappie, bluegill AND catfish on mepps spinners. I have never had one other lure catch as many species for me ever. If I could only be stuck with one lure to feed myself I would choose the inline spinner, hands down .
What's to hate ?

You can add trout to that list. I've caught numerous Rainbows on #0 and #1 Dressed-Aglias and Comets.

I mean,i was just stating what I've caught... If we are just gonna tack down every species caught on an in line spinner you can pretty much throw every species on the list.. musky , walleye.. etc

Where I tend to throw them these day is mostly when the river does get clear is at smaller creek mouths that enter the river. Real slow in shallow water. I’ve caught some pretty nice smallies on 3’s, 4’s and 5’s along with dink’s and runts. Muskys show up out of nowhere to chase them down also. 30” plus up muskys on 6 lb. & 8 lb. test you have your hands full. Been there a few time while smallie fishing.

+ 1 on that. They put out a good product.
I believe anything that swims will take one. There was a time (many years ago) I’d throw them exclusively but those were days and days ago.
Primarily for trout i fish Panther Martins and bass is Mepps.
Thanks for all your input. I`m that I purchased some Mepps inline spinners, and can`t wait to receive them.

A way to fish them faster without causing them to burn across the surface is to put a split-shot or two about 8-10" in front of the spinner. That way you can reel them in faster, trigger more reaction bites, and not have them skipping the surface. The split-shots keep the spinner down and being that far in front of it, doesn't affect the action.
I've taken a larger inline spinner, cut off the treble, added a split ring & screw lock weighted hook with a 3.5" plastic, and made an awesome rig for numbers of bass.

Ok so I creeped on your profile because you didn't respond... And you were active 2 hours ago... How can you hate something without reason?
Troll ????

I just couldn't resist... I don't "HATE" any lure. However, I dislike all inline spinners because of the propensity to hang them up every cast. I know they're productive and have used them. But, I would rather catch fish on any other lure than an inline spinner.
What's even funnier is the fact that you're so incensed about my hate you've asked twice why I did, LOL! I truly just couldn't resist the urge throw that Tombstone reference out there. Ultimately, it was a joke..
When I was 13 I threw Mepps spinners and Mister Twisters on ball head jigs and caught tons of bass-then I grew up and got "smart". As most have stated, they are great fish catchers, I should probably dust them off!
@Big Rick Iwas just baffled and very curious about anybodys dislike of the mepps lure. Unfortunately, I'm not old enough to appreciate your tombstone reference. Lol. I'm aware of it but never watched it.
I also don't like your reasoning for not liking them. Because then you would dislike all treble hook lures , any place you're getting a mepps caught up those same places would treat a crankbait the same way..
Cool thing about bass fishing is there are 101 ways to catch em. I don't use mepps anymore for bass for that reason.. it literally may be the best all species lure to exist though.

Not true..... Most treble hook baits FLOAT and don't sink like a rock like Mepps do. Hence my dislike of them. But, I couldn't care less that you don't like my reason for not liking them. I'm sure Mepps is proud to have you as their self appointed ambassador, LOL!!
@Big Rick
Not just mepps , inline spinners in general. I'm not self appointed anything...
And ok most crankbaits float but are still just as prone to snagging when you're working the lure...
I wouldn't fish them where they are prone to being snagged and they don't sink like a rock either they come in all kinds of weights and you're supposed to keep it moving anyway lol.

Good enough. I'm done here. Have a good day.

This......my next trip out will include Comet Minno's
Mepps spinners and rooster tails are great especially for creeks. 1/4 oz is what i use. Usually get smallmouth/pike with them
I like them just fine but they're not very weedless and the squirrel tails shouldn't be put away wet (if you don't want rusted and broken hooks later).
Don't know if they still make 'em or not but I like the Xtra Deeps for suspended crappie.
$4 and #5 are great for Pickerel (they go after anything shiny) as well as Bass and a variety of Panfish, such as Yellow Perch.
I had too many problems with the treble hooks snagging on weeds, so I replaced a bunch with single weedless hooks.
