How many of you wear buffs, outlaw sashes, neck covers, tubes or what ever they call them protect to your neck ,ears and face from the sun while fishing? I have been thinking about purchasing one. Any suggestion?
During the summer and winter months - all the time!!! They are amazing. Many people think they are only for summer use - not true. I went out on the water a caouple weekends ago to chase some yellow perch with fellow kayak anglers. My Hobie buff kept my face nice and warm and protected from the chilly winds but still was breathable enough that I wasn't sweating under it.
Now, during colder months, there is one drawback and that is your exhaled breath is typically warmer than the outside air, so if you wear one with polarized glasses, the lenses may fog up when you exhale. Small inconvenience, but its worth it in my opinion.
On a side note, the coolest one I have seen is the one that looks like the faces of the Ghosts from Ghost Recon fame - pretty killer if you ask me, but black is not the best color for summer sun.

Likewise, I've been looking into buying one. Haven't felt the need to use one at this point, but interested.
Oh yeah, I wear one. Bassking actually sent me one to try out. Plus, they look pretty cool too.
Why wear a rag on your face when you can wear a cowboy hat?!
Jk. I wear one in the winter months and when its cold. They do make some pretty wicked designs on them now!!
I bought a buff to wear last year but only used it as a neck cover. I forced myself to try it this year in florida. For me it is comfortable over the neck & ears but under my nose since I wear glasses with fitover sun glasses. Over the nose causes my lens to fog up with every breath. Some companies make them with breathing slots for the mouth which would help with the fogging. You can pull it over a ball cap or wear the ball cap over it.
I wear a bandana summer and winter.
In the winter it blocks the wind.
In the summer you occasionally dip it in water to stay cool.
I use them all the time now. I tried these because of the breathing holes, but I'm not sure I can get used to having them pulled up over my nose.

UV will kill you. Get one and sun gloves to boot.
Yes, I use them all the time. In fact, BassResource now has them!
http://www.rayjus.com/bassresource/
Everyone I know who fishes down here in Fla wear's them.
An afternoon in the middle of a lake on a 95 deg day it's allmost mandatory.
Mike
Buffs are the way to go. Don't limit yourself to only using them fishing- I keep a spare one in my hiking backpack. Really came in handy at Yellowstone last summer.
I have a couple and the really work well. I'm going to try mine in winter now you guys mention it. Like RW said, I also do a bandana in summer and dip it in the cooler!
I wear a buff in the winter, with a ski hat and hood, its nice and warm and your keeping the uv rays off your cheeks. In the summer i wear a buff with a really big hat. Also have columbia uv shirts and dr shade gloves.
A Buff offers great sun protection.Another side benefit of using a Buff along with sungloves is for protection from insects, notably No-see-ums.
I wear a buff. Probably one of the best pieces of bass fishing protective gear I own. I did a couple tours overseas and got pretty beat up by the sun over there. Ever since, if I am in the sun, the skin on my lips will burn very quickly. It doesn't matter if I put SPF90 on my lips they get burnt. Then the skin falls off. Weeks of burned cracked lips....Last summer I bought myself a buff. It took a little bit of getting used to, but now I won't leave home with out it. I will probably get a second one for this year. I wear glasses and as long as I keep it below my nose I don't have a problem fogging up. My one fishing partner hates it as it somewhat muffles my voice when I talk.....maybe I should get him one too.
A must have

I have the one with the thermal layer in camo for hunting. I wanted something that I could slip over my face quick if need be. Its perfect for what i need it to do. Not too hot that it cant be used early season either.
I work outside and wear one everyday with gloves and long sleeve shirts. I've tried most and my favorite is the Columbia. The material is softer and stretchier than most. It is also easier to breathe through.

Mine is treated with insect shield, I seldom wear it, it's too hot and my glasses fog up. On a cool morning it does a nice job as a neck scarf.
Finally..............I love it when people start paying attention..........but cover those arms and lather up those legs because there is a lot more skin on you than your face and hands. Very light and vented shirts may be the answer.

It appears the Pro's are starting to get the word, or they need more advertising space - I don't know which. I just saw Ric Clung (?) on Bass Pro TV and he's covering up too, but what's up with the ponytail ? X2 on the coverup,,, unless you have very good medical insurance cause you'll need it; just ask Al Linder.
My sister works at a dermatologist and after hearing about all the horror stories of people having cancer carved off their face you bet I wear one. I also wear long sleeve shirts.
I have been thinking about some gloves does anyone recommend a nice glove that isnt to hot or bulky.
Family history indicates that these are not optional for me, instead I believe a Buff is more along the lines of "Survival Equipment".
So, YES, I wear them.
A-Jay
I have been thinking about some gloves does anyone recommend a nice glove that isnt to hot or bulky.
Use 'em all the time myself. I've got two and want to add to the collection.
Buff brand gloves are fine and seem to be durable. Wish they offered more manly colors though. My neck Buff I gave up on, I only wanted it to protect the back of my neck. Im a big guy and it doesnt stay put, always creeping up and exposing me between the t-shirt hem and the buff. With the gloves you have to give them a little while to get used to them before you give up on them. With casting reels, I felt like I was always going to lose grip as I palmed the reel at time of hookset.
I use a UV Buff mainly for neck cover. It is nice to pull it over my nose and ears though when it's cold and I'm making long runs in the boat.
I wear one pretty much every time I'm on the water. In the winter Ill wear one over my Ski-mask, in the summer I wear one along with a light cap, if it gets really hot I dip it in the water, or pour bottled water over it & it keeps me cool. I keep one with my rain gear & fish gloves, and an extra in my tackle bag. Don't play around with the sun.
yes i wear them all year, infact i have about 4, i also use them when i hunt.
If your looking for gloves, get the dr shade gloves at TW, there great.
wearing a buff is a must on the water in the sun!
Take note of the profile pic!!!!!!!!
Quality of life improves after using a buff collar. I was fed up with my face hurting and the raccoon tan line. I do hate when it fogs up my glasses, but you can pull it under your nose. I think Columbia makes one with vents. I may try it out.
I just picked up the Simms version of the Buff at the Classic Expo. I've worn it twice now, it's lighter than the Buff I wore all last summer, it has breathing holes which, so far at least in the cold air, has eliminated the glasses fogging issue I had with the Buff. It also has front and back neck flaps which eliminate the "neck creep", exposing the lower neck to the sun, which sometimes happens with the Buff.
I have the simms its by far the best one Ive had and Ive had about 6 different brands. The neck flaps are the best part of it.
i too like the Columbia brand in the summer time. Buff brand in the winter.

I have worn a buff and it made my neck break out with basically whiteheads.... Not sure why but It does help with sun...
So then we're all still in agreement....If you don't wear this stuff then you can get skin cancer like me...and have big hunks of skin chopped off of your face and body to keep you from dying.....right!!! Wearing huge bandages on your face is not macho....Plus you'll look wicked cool...like a guide....wearing the stuff....Ok I'm done...
A-Jay
i use a hat that has a neck protection...really in s. florida you need it or else a couple hours fishing your neck will be black for real lol
I hate wearing sunblock on my face and neck. It's an annoyance to put on, I sweat and it gets in my eyes and makes my contacts blurry, and it seems to stain the collar of my shirts so they look really dirty. A buff seems to be a great option to make all this a thing of the past so I bought one this winter. It looks a little funny (maybe because it looks so stretched out on my big head ) but so far it's kept my face, neck, and lips from getting burned and I only notice I'm wearing it occasionally and is much nicer than wearing sunblock.
I accept the fact that I look like a beekeeper on the water when I have my gloves, buff and floppy hat on. But I've come to the realization that I simply do not put sunblock on with enough frequency so I'm ok looking a little goofy in an effort to prevent skin cancer

X2 ~ !
Sun exposure is just another one of those seemingly innocent situations in life that while it's happening, feels good. But once you realize that you've over done it, sometimes it too late. Despite all the warnings and advertisements, so many just refuse to believe that it can end your life quite prematurely.
I wrap myself up like a mummy and that's all there is to it.
A-Jay
Id rather look like a mummy now when Im young then deal with skin cancer when Im older. My sister works at a dermatologist office and shows me pictures of people that get carved up daily becuase of skin cancer. They straight up take out chunks of your skin mainly ears and nose are the worst affected.

X2, I've been a victim of a dermatologist knife on several occasions; they did the tops of both ears, and spots on both forearms; it's no fun recovering from that. I now have to see the Dermatologist every six months for check ups just because I fish.
I finally bought a Tilley hat. I've accepted my age I guess. Much cooler than the buff was. No more fogged glasses. First time in 3 visits that the Doc hasn't needed to freeze the edges off the tops of my ears. No more burned cheeks and nose either. I look like I should be driving a Subaru instead of a old pick up.
I, too, have had a couple of chunks cut out. I will go to extremes to try and prevent more. I think there's a couple more that are going to need to be cut out. My face feels better after a day on the water, when I wear the buff, than it did with just sunscreen. Buff and gloves and sunscreen are a must for everybody.
I have tried wearing mine but with a full beard it is irritating. Need to try to get used to it.
I wear long sleeves and fishing pants much of the time and that's because of the no seeums, with an offshore breeze coming in it's shorts and a t-shirt. The buff is too hot for me, I only wear it when the insects are out.
You need to wear one man...I'm normally not the safety marshal but getting you face fried over and over is not good at all.
I wear one made by Simms and it's pretty good. It does have the breathing holes. When combined with a ball cap and sunglasses, everything from the neck up is covered.

x2. Columbia Omni or Omni freeze fabric is amazing. a light breeze and/or water on it feels like central A/C. don't know how they did it but i'm in heaven (and SPF 50). i also bought a pair of arm sleeves ($32) to wear with tee shirts instead of spending $300-400 on a bunch of specialty fishing shirts.

the buff that comes with this set has holes for ur nose so it doesn't fog:

Edited by ClackerBuzzI also wear the simms buff I like it because it has extended flaps in the front and rear for neck protection. The previous buff I had always left a gap between it and my shirt.
I use buffs and long sleeve shirts only white color
I know...I know...It's still freezing and we're still getting snow and many places won't see open water for weeks but......stock up now and get your mind set to using this stuff. I managed to sneak by one more year without Skin Cancer.....the stuff works.....use it please.....
Grampa1114
Where is a good place to get these buffs at?
Nice going grampa1114 - this is a good topic to revitalize. I too, had skin cancer. No fun getting Mohs style surgery. I wear a hat (Tilley brand - replaced free if they ever wear out), polarized sunglasses, a Buff, long sleeved fishing shirts (Simms & Columbia brands), and Buff angler gloves. Don't be stupid folks... the UV damage to your skin can kill you. Stay healthy = enjoy fishing longer.
I picked one up this year. No more getting burnt for this guy.
I use it all including long pants, long sleeve shirts, hat with cape, sun block, sun gloves and Buffs. Those with Tilley or Cowboy hats and that is all you use, you are not being protected adequately. A wide brim hat gives pretty good protection when the sun is above you. But the sun doesn't stay above you all day. It offers no protection to reflect sunlight form the water. That will burn you also.
The wet bandanna is a great way to cool down.

If you have a BPS handy, they have it in the Flyfishing section or Orvis, LL Bean, or other such catalogs, or look up Buffs on line. Some previously posted, great ideas as well.....
http://buffusa.com/sports/collections/filter/men
I do.
I haven't tried buffs yet but started using a serious sun hat last year.
And I just picked up a pair of Mangrove Sun Gloves. They are so light that after about three casts I forgot all about them.
It's time for all of us to get serious about sun protection.
I picked up a buff last summer after my face got fried pretty bad, best investment I've made in a while. I strongly recommend it
Buddy, those suckers help a hellalot. Keeps your face cool during the summer, and also allows you to breathe when making them there 85 mph. runs #mercury300
I think I may get one this weekend. I am from a family with bad skin, so I should probably think about it more.
Have you checked out the BassResource buffs? They're contoured to cover your neck front and back!
http://www.rayjus.com/bassresource/
I use one exclusively now. I am redheaded. I wind up looking like a boiled lobster if I don't. I will be purchasing some gloves this year. I also went with long pants and a long sleeve shirt with protection built into them. I don't want to do anymore damage than I already have done to my skin.
I wear a buff almost daily, mostly to keep my neck warm on a cool morning. Mine is insect shield or say they say, other than bugs or warmth I don't like them at all, they are just so hot. Mine comes off once the sun comes up.
I usually wear a straw hat in the summer, but I have been looking for a buff. I will have one purchased before it warms up around here.

Good idea Glenn...but is individual purchase an option?
Absolutely! Yes, you can buy them individually directly from that order form.
Ah yes...just by clicking the box in front....done...thanks....
just ordered a polar buff for the winter and cooler months running while duck hunting is not fun with no face mask
Personally I think they look retarded, but I'm getting to the point it might be worth function over form.
If you think Buffs are retarded then you should see what you look like right after MOHS on your forehead.
I don't care what I look like. I'd rather use a buff instead of applying sunscreen. I do care about getting a sunburn.
There are a lot of different brands of buffs out there but personally Hoo Rag is what I use:
http://www.hoorag.com/
Not only do these provide great skin protection but you can get some really great styles and they are at a great price point as well. In addition you can design your own buff which come in bulk quantities if you have a fishing team or club and want to create some for everyone. Hope this helps someone!

i ended getting up a buff yesterday, only cause so many of yall made me realize that its important to be safe when it comes to the sun. Many in my family have had spots removed from their skin. I wanna stay protected! Thanks guys!

Hey man, I looked and in the FAQ portion of their website it states it's a UPF of 30. The following is a upf chart developed by the American Association of Textile Chemist and Colorists and this is the standard by which all clothing is measured in terms of sun protection effectiveness.
UPF Rating Protection Category % UV radiation Blocked UPF 15 - 24 Good 93.3 - 95.9 UPF 25 - 39 Very Good 96.0 - 97.4 UPF 40 - 50+ Excellent 97.5 - 99+
As you can see the Hoo Rag rates as a 30 which is very good and blocks 96 percent or more of radiation. Hope this helps!
After having some "pre-cancer" cut from my head at the ripe old age of 27/28, I started taking this sun stuff much more seriously. Now I wear, long pants, long sleeves, hat, buff and sunglasses all the time. I too do not like it over my nose, so I have a stick of sunblock made specifically for your nose I roll on a couple times a day. Might look goofy, but better than cancer!

Cool, thanks for the info. I checked everywhere on their website except the FAQ...duh. I did some other reading and found that a t-shirt is usually between 3-9 spf depending on the type of blend. It's kinda scary low and shows me the need for a well made spf shirt.
Notice the hat, gloves, long sleeve shirt and buff (under the hat, I had just pulled it up). All columbia, all spf 30, always on when I'm outside fishing or working.
I use as much covering as I can all the time. Even in 100 degree temps I'm wearing them.
Although I wear long sleeve shirts, I find it cooler to wear short sleeves shirts and sun sleeves. I have several brands of gloves, sleeves, buffs, etc. I don't feel like a cooked lobster when I get off the water.

I thought this was a short and informative read about sun protection. I found it when I was doing some research based on this thread. These are the kinds of things we need to teach in school if you ask me.
It wont cover the back of my neck, just rides up. I gave it to my wife and she wears it when they are doing a raid on grow houses!
Never on the water without one anymore. I have three in the boat, at least. my favorite is the original UV Buff. I have Smallmouth, Turtle Grass, Tarpon, Largemouth, and several others. They're an essential part of my gear.
I always wear one when I'm on the water. Great for he sun, great for keeping bugs out of your face when you make a run also. Wear the Buff gloves as well. Couldn't be happier with both products.

I wear mine everytime I go out. Period.
Also long sleeves and long pants. If you get loose fitting, specialty clothing, its actually much cooler in the summer than shorts and a tee.
While I always say support any members here. ...and try the bassresource gaiter first.... I recently saw this brand on Facebook and they run weekly 40-75% sales on FB. I picked up two for $12 and they are high quality, loose fitting and light.
Search " salt armor". They're fast and courteous too.
Crucial! I wear both the neck buff and the long sleeve UPF.

Combat shirts, BDU shirts, ACU shirts. anything milsurp is the way to go imo.
I haven't found one with the cigar hole in addition to the nose holes. I wear a cheap Tilley hat knockoff, but something additional for the back of my neck - and maybe even the sides of my face could work. I'm going to look into it.

^^THIS^^ !!! ... I urge everyone to wear some sort of UV protection (such as a buff & fishing gloves) while fishing - and that goes double for fair skinned people !! **The current statistics are over 50% of people over 50 will experience some sort of skin pre-cancer / cancer during their lifetime . Don't think it won't happen to you either !! ... I grew up fishing in Texas and Florida and now I have to see a dermatologist 4 times a year for a check and every visit I now average 9 to 12 places on my hands , arms , face and head the Doctor finds which need to be burned off or cut out . These are the places I did not protect as a kid and now it's too late for me as the damage is done ... For an informative read check out Bernie Schultz's Bassmaster article : "Don't Look Like Me" !! ... Lastly , for large head fishermen who experienced a tight fit with previous Buffs - now they are offered in XL sizes . Enjoy fishing - but please be smart out there so you can stay safe and enjoy fishing for years to come .
