Are you stocking up your box this winter? 2024

fishing user avatarSkilletSizeBass. reply :

What new lures have you added to your box this winter?  I've been buying some new stuff to try this year and restocking up on a few items. I'm trying to expand into different lures that I've overlooked in the past, or just did not give enough effort to, spinnerbaits, jigs, lipless to name a few. And, picked up a few new type/brands just to try out. I'm going to be broke before spring if I don't slow down buying. ;D  Not sure if this link will work :

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

I've actually spent more time un-stocking.  I carry more stuff in that boat than I could use in a whole season, most of which never sees use.  So decided to start rooting and remove a lot of lures and plastics that I don't use.

As to what I've added....well yesterday I picked up a couple bags of the Strike King Finesse Worms to use when Shakey Head fishing, a package of those small rubber bobber stops (no more toothpicking worm weights :D ), and grabbed two more of the RedEye Shads.  (I only had one that I've fished for two years and it's getting pretty beat up).  Today I'm going to dig into my soft plastic boxes and start pulling some more out.

fishing user avatarSkilletSizeBass. reply :

yea I had to unstock some to make room for the new items I picked up. I got a pack of the tru-tungstein weight pegs to try this year. I mostly needed to thin out my worms/soft plastics. I've learned a long time ago though, don't give them away or throw them away, because you may go back to them or decide to use them again. :D

fishing user avatarmidnighthrasher reply :

The baitmonkey seems to have me convinced that i need to buy everything tackle warehouse sells!!!

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

That's my problem....I never toss anything.  I have a few titanium weights that are impossible to peg due to the sleeve.  Seen several articles where the pro uses those small rubber bobber stops as pegs.  Finally found some yesterday and took one and slid it onto my 17lb co-poly.  Works like a dream :D .

fishing user avatarkikstand454 reply :

well... i have found two sales in my area that will lead me to using some different things.

first one store had their entire zoom stock for a dollar a bag. i about fell over. too bad i got there after all the trick worms were gone. i did get some finesss worms and some toads and i picked up quite a few brush hogs that i havent ever really used. i typically use beavers but this year im going to throw the hogs a bit more and see if i like em.

then i went to another joint and got gambler lures for 2 dollars. so i got as many paddle tails as they had and i also picked up some bb crickets that im going to try when punching mats later this summer.

this same store had a dollar off xcalibers so i got some of their traps and a few one knockers.... also got some more series6 strike kings that im excited about.

all i need is some frogs (i like the scum frog pros) and some more shakey heads... and i wont need anything else for the rest of the year.

but then... truthfully..... i dont NEED anything now!

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

i have been cutting back for a while now. when you own over a hundred lipless baits it tends to choke the bait monkey. sold off a few, but counted last night and still at 113. thinking about putting up lots of ten and getting rid of some more.

Your lipless collection sounds like my crankbait collection. I keep thinning them out and had to buy another tacklebox just to put the ones I thinned out in. Now I got 2 boxes in the garage of stuff I don't use much. But, I have pulled stuff out and gave it another try at times, a reprieve ;D

fishing user avatarChrisAW reply :

Yes! I have been. I'm thinking about going to BPS today so I can stock up on more essential hardbaits. I just about have soft baits covered for the most part...

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

I'm starting to thing that all my tackle storage issues would be solved if I had a larger floating tackle box to tow behind my fishing truck.  I'm giving lots of thought to a 19 or 20 ft floating tackle box to replace my 18 foot floating tackle box.  It's just money and you're not allowed to take any with you at check out time.

fishing user avatarbear7625 reply :

The baitmonkey loves the northwoods this time of year. Cabin fever is coming to a peak and the baitmonkey smells blood. ;D I found a Soron XTS at a price I couldn't pass up. The bad thing is now I need another rod. I've done some re-stocking of plastics and added a couple of crankbait colors I didn't have. If the HARD WATER doesn't leave soon, I'll go nuts!!!

fishing user avatarbwillis reply :

I've bought hundreds of soft plastics (lizards, worms, frogs, stickbaits, etc.), dozens of hooks, hundreds of bullet weights, couple dozen jigs, poppers, jitterbugs, jerkbaits, like 5 more rods and reels, tackle binder.  If I keep buying stuff, my fiance is gonna kill me.

fishing user avatarRyneB reply :

My lizard collection has officially gotten out of hand. I told my friend 2 years ago that if i say " I need more lizards" or try to buy any, to punch me. Well, since then i have bought at least 20 bags. I now have two binders full of Zoom lizards. The good thing is i go through almost a bag an outing, so they do get used. I have a lot of stuff, but the only thing i should downsize is crankbaits due to the fact it is probably my least used bait. Went to Bass Pro today and that put a little dent in the wallet.

fishing user avatarbwillis reply :

Yeah, I've got maybe a hundred zoom lizards, couple dozen powerbait lizards, few dozen tiki moko lizards, and i picked up a bag of 100 from bass assassin for like 4 bucks, getting a little ridiculous

fishing user avatarbobbyc reply :

Right about now, i have enough tackle to stay on the water until next Feb. Many old standards were replenished, along with some new colors, new sizes (spinnerbaits, jigs, worms) along with a few new nice rods. I'm still looking at a few new buzzbaits, and a few new swim baits in different sizes. And lastly, about a dozen 'roadrunner' jigs in various colors, as i fish a lake with plenty of yellow perch. OH... some Uncle Bucks 'panfish creatures' (dragonfly) and perhaps a few more jerk baits.....oh, and...........(it never ends) :D

Nice choice with the Suffix.  Best mono on the market, hands down!

fishing user avatarTXBasshunter reply :

I'm even in worse shape - I bought all the stuff to start pouring my own plastics, so I am going to be covered up in baits! :D

fishing user avatarAdam G reply :

Here's the shopping list this spring...

-Rapala Clackin Rap's -- Learned you can't have enough and now they have a new size

-Sweet Beavers -- needed a new punch/trailer to try to get into jig fishing

-Roboworm EZ shads -- going to try paddletail swimbaits this year

-Baitsmith Shad -- everything else they make is awesome and I've heard great things about this one

-Musky Mayhem Double Cowgirls -- I need a Tiger or a big Pike this year

That should be the main additions this year, last year was a little crazy  8-)

fishing user avatarChrisAW reply :

another $75 in hard baits today

I just can't get the monkey off me! I can already see myself spending more on more crank and jerk baits so I have a selection of colors.

fishing user avatarStingray23 reply :

so far I took advantage of the sale TW had on the Seaguar Invizx and Yozuri Hybrid. Next weekend I'm heading to BPS in foxborough MA for some hardcore spending. cant wait!

Having a huge BPS just a few miles away is a double-edged sword...I go at least twice a week to browse around, but the bait monkey jumps on my back and starts chewing my ears off until I give in and buy more goodies. ;D

fishing user avatarowl reply :

I'm going fishing today. That's the only way to stop me! :-[

fishing user avatarCRFisher reply :

I'm trying to be frugal, especially in this economy.  The bulk discount sale at Bass Assassin was a steal.  Loaded up on a bunch of Wave fishing soft plastics and Lake Fork Magic Shads too when Overstockbait was almost giving them away.  Between the two I got about 350 pieces of plastic, 4 or 5 spoons (using spoons more and more - all shapes and weights), and some Terminator jigs all for a little under $60.

All I need now is to pick up some more line.  (that and finally upgrade my rod and reel)

fishing user avatarPantera61 reply :

Samurai braid, Berkley 100% Flouro x 17lb test, 15lb test, 8lb test, Rebel Pop R 1/2 oz x 2, O.S.P. Blitz Max DR, Vendetta 6'9" spin rod, O.S.P. Zero 1 jigs, Revo STX HS, Megabass Bumpee Hogs, Meiho/Versus tackle boxes x 4 and I'm still looking for more jigs, spinnerbaits, worm weights, at least one more reel, one more rod, a few more jerkbaits and treble hooks to recondition some baits.

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

I do almost every season during the winter.I stock up on my usual favorite baits and terminal tackle.

My new baits to try by SK rage tails.

fishing user avatarscrutch reply :

if my wife knew.... OMG!

Rage tail shad, frogs, anafreakincondas, lizards, chunks, space monkeys, is strike king a publicly traded company? cuz I wanna buy some SK stock.  rapalas...new dt's.  10 in all i think so far...xrap shad shallow...box full just of those.  added a new flippin stick with a quantum kvd on it...

oh yeah... a boat is coming in 2 weeks...a 1999 viper cobra i think it'll be.  THATS a whole different story...

AND  just found out I got exclusive rights to 30 acres of a private quarry FULL of hawgs.

yeah... thats right I'm bouncing off the walls here in indiana... COME ON SPRING!! :D :D :D

fishing user avatarIndiana Bass1 reply :

Call it the bait monkey or what, but this has to be a sickness men. I already have over 500 crankbaits in the boat and I pick up another dozen at the classic. Buy 3 reels to go with the 40 already on hand. WOW! And today I am looking to but a few rods. I already have so many on the deck you cant hardly move around. Simply CRAZY. LOL

Yes I have. I've gotten probably ten new bags of plastics, various crankbaits, jigs, hooks, weights. I bought two new rods and reels right after Christmas. I can't even walk into Wal-Mart without buying some hooks and weights.

fishing user avatarSWH reply :

For those of you unstocking the boat or tackle box. What do you do with the baits your unstocking? do you sell them back online or just toss them or give them to others? just curious as i think i would have to try and sell some myself if i had that much and unopened at that.

fishing user avatarurban_angler28 reply :

I got it real bad, i can see bps out the window from my girls house. I have to drive by it everyday. I,ve been loading up on cranks, swimbaits and jigs. I'm making strike king filthy rich

fishing user avatarbackwater4 reply :

Added a few Bandit 200 cranks, Red Eye Shads, some blade baits (silver buddies etc) got into this late in the fall last year and re stocked some plastics. I've been unloading a lot of the stuff I dont use anymore.

For the most part the stuff I take out of my main box I just transfer to other boxes in the garage. There are times I go back and dig something out and try it again.

I give mine to my nephews. Crazy too.... I could have a crap lure that cant even catch weeds and these guys can catch all day with them. I gave them a crazy crawler that i broke 1 leg off last year and the next day one of them nailed his PB 4lb lmb. Its great for them because instead of playing video games or watching tv they are fishing.

Normally sell or try to trade the stuff I haven't used in a while. Most of it is extra's I bought thinking it was the last bait I'd ever need again.

I use to own one of the 2 man boats. We fish in my brothers some now. They are a ton of fun  :D

You just have to cut down on the size of your tacklebox  ;D

fishing user avatarscrutch reply :

how do u keep from opening up some of those packages??!!??  i cant wait to open 'em up and rearrange my boxes to make room.

fishing user avatarIwillChooseFreeWill reply :

I am a minimalist, I only buy what I need, what works most of the time and don't bother with the rest. On a rare occasion I will spend a little to see if something new works but thats usually only a single or small pack.

This winter I did spend almost $300:

Pflueger Trion GX-7 spinning rod/reel combo, 7' Med. 1 piece rod

BPS $25 rod/reel combo with 6'6" M rod for panfish and light bass fishin

300 yd 12 lb Pline CX

all sorts of lures

Replacement transducer for my PiranhaMAX 215 and stuff for a removable mount for my canoe

Handheld GPS
