solid budget minded reel 2025

fishing user avatarShadow1 reply :

I know there might be a topic about this already.  I couldn't find it.  I am on a little budget . . . got a daughter in private college for another 3 years.  I have 3 older Shimano reels that are showing there wear and tear.  I need to replace one for sure and probably another before its over.  Can anyone recommend a solid reel that won't break the bank?  Thanks guys, great site.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Daiwa Fuego CT100. I got, I use it, I love it.    jj

Which Shimanos do you have currently?  If they're of the more popular models you can always get them serviced and get the drags upgraded to Carbontex.  Our sponsor DVT does great work!

Stick with Daiwa and Shimano. Daiwa Fuego CT and Shimano Slx are the best under $100.

Smart move

fishing user avatarMrSmitty reply :

I have (and love) Daiwas.......but a Lew's Tournament MB is a fantastic reel (and value) at around $100.

I'd seriously look into getting your current reels serviced/reconditioned.  I'm a Shimano guy through and through - I've been burned a few times buying reels that the store clerk said were "just as good".   My advice is if you've got to get a new reel, get a Curado K or a Curado 70 - spend somewhat more than  $100.   With modest care and regular maintenance Shimano reels will last a lifetime.

fishing user avatarMickD reply :

Fuegos are hard to beat.  I'm not familiar with Lew's , but a lot of folks on the forum like them.

I'm wondering why your Shimanos are giving up.  With proper care and maintenance they should last a lifetime.  If you are not keeping them clean, keeping them from getting dunked, and lubing regularly, cleaning not nearly so often as lubing, then your new reel will go too.  Sorry for mentioning it, but we have some real lax people on the forum who don't seem to realize how important proper care is.  I hope you're not one, and if not, your new reel should last a long time.

I have many Fuego CT's, and they have been great over several seasons.

I have one Shimano SLX and it's been great so far.

Honestly the only reason I like the Fuego's better than the SLX, is that they can be had for less $$.

fishing user avatarjohnD. reply :

Citica 200I , can be had for $99 right now if you look thru the big auction site. Fuego CT , for about $80. Can't go wrong with either.

Actually I had already been at work for several hours.  :teeth:

I think that is even a better price than I paid for mine.  Good thing I don't need any more reels.  My pocketbook is thankful for the time off.  :D

Most fishermen I know don't maintain their reels.  They stop working and they're put to the curb, doesn't matter what they paid for it either.  I know quite a few are intimidated at the thought of opening up a reel, but a professional service costs far less than a brand new reel and greatly extends the life of it.
