switching baits out on braid? 2025

fishing user avatarjeremyt reply :

What do you guys do, I usually take a lighter with me, burn the lure off and change. Do you guys use leaders with swivels or just take cutters. Its a real pain using jig heads.  I love fishing braid, it lasts longer and IMHO is a better solution to  mono, I usually use berk pow pro.

fishing user avatarTin reply :

Cutters.  Dont like fire around it, just personal preference.

fishing user avatarBranuss04 reply :

Cutters.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Cutters

Yesterday's braided lines were made of linen and dacron and any dull pair of scissors cut the line.

The polyethylene braids used today require a good pair of scissors to get a clean shear.

The $3 pair sold by Bass Pro is nothing to write home about, but I'm sure you'll like them better than the cigarette lighter  :)

I use a little pair of Fiskar scissors that I got in the craft section at WalMart.  They have rounded edges so I can run with them and my wife doesn't scold me.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I use kids scissors (Fiskars).  They're cheap, come with a bright colored handle, and they do a fine job of cutting the line with out fraying it.

fishing user avatarAnthonyRSS reply :

I must be the only one here with a sharp pocket knife...

LMAO!! :)  seems like i have a lighter on me more often than my snips!!  If that doesn't work i make a makeshift cutter out of one of the beer cans in the hull . . .

I find that even the scary-sharp hollow ground spey blade on my stockman's knife leaves a frayed end on Power Pro.

fishing user avatarjeremyt reply :

Thanks for all of the replies. I know it might sound stupid, but the lighter was keeping the line from getting frayed and it is a royal pain trying to thread that stuff into an 1/8 oz jig head. I didn't know if a leader would be a better answer. I have tried the diagonal cutters, but they sucked. I guess I will try a plain ole pair of school scissors. Once again thanks.

Not stupid at all.

To this day, I still "Flame-Whip" the ends of my dock lines, which never fray.

Wrap masking-tape temporarily around the rode, ignite the fuzzy fibers with a lighter, wait for a molten blob of plastic,

then blow out the flame. Not so easy on a windy day though, if you know what I mean  :)

I'm actually suprised no one has mentioned this yet but, nothing works better on braid IMHO than a simple pair of finger nail clippers, you don't even have to spend money just open the miscellaneous drawer at home and grab a pair to keep in your pocket, on your belt or around your neck.  BEST solution imo.

i use a single edged razor blade...sharper than the trapezoid shaped ones used for cutting cardboard.

have been using the same razor for months and is pretty dull now but still cuts it no prob.

my powerpro chips the blades on fingernail clippers :-?

fishing user avatarTin reply :

Does anyone know if by burning the line you make it weaker in other spots. Like within a couple inch section up from where it was burned? Always wondered...

fishing user avatarMickD reply :

"Braid Blade" scissors do a fine job, as will a really sharp knife if you cut against something.  I have never found any tool with jaws/cutters that simply close on the braid to cut it cleanly.

I use a flame to get the tips of the uni-uni leader to line knot to their shortest possible length (doesn't work well in the boat/wind, however).

I have never had any problems with it,  thats with fresh water and toothy saltwater fish.

fishing user avatarJig Man reply :

I have used sissors, side cutters, knives, nail clippers, etc.  But now I use the Power Zap.  It cuts through braid like a hot knife through butter and has a 1000 other uses for plastics.

fishing user avatarjeremyt reply :

skunked.

I was thinking of trying the speed clips, but I have had quite a few people tell me that they have had problems with them.  How have they help up for you.

fishing user avatarskunked_again reply :

i dont mind them. theres only a few baits i like to toss while using speed clips so i only use them on spinning outfits. i have however used them on all types of crank baits and found them work ok. i, however dont like speed clips and mono line.

i took my wifes sewing scissors and they work great---come to find out they are very expensive ($12) and the cut through power pro very easily. i used to use the fiskars, the kids crayola scissors, bps, but after a while they seem to become dull. go to a craft store, and pick yourself up some decent scissors. you will be glad in the long run.
