Somewhat new to "advanced" bass fishing. By this I mean starting to look at new rods and have noticed there are jigging rods, crank bait rods, jerk bait rods, flipping rods, etc. My question is; Is there a good cross over rod for muliple tactics or can you get away with 2 rods, one for jigging and flipping and the other for cranks and jerk baits? Any advice would be great, thanks.
A 7' medium heavy fast action will cover jigs t-rig pretty much anything you throw at it and a 7' medium moderate for treble hook baits would be my choice of two rods then a 6'10 medium x-fast for anything I need a spinning rod for
tight lines

Yes you can get away with only 2 rods, if I´m limited to carry only two rods this is my choice:
H Fast for ---> worms, jigs, spinnerbaits, soft body smaller size swimbaits ( up to around 1.5 oz)
M Fast for ---> treble bait hooks, ligh lures
7' medium heavy fast action for single hook baits
7' medium heavy moderate action for treble hook baits
I'm with Dwight. Those two would be my choice.
I am also looking at getting a rod for fishing lots of different lures. I was wondering if it is hard to jerk a jerkbait or popper with a 7 ft rod?
Hard part in this selection of 2 rods is lighter baits, without a spinning rod there will be baits that you will not be able to throw
1. 7' MH fast casting
2. 7' M fast spinning
3. (if possible) 7' M moderate casting
If I could only pick one, it would be the spinning rod, because that's what suits my style of fishing.

NO.
My heaviest bass rod is a 7' med spinning fairly standard fast tip, used for all lure types.
I agree with Dwight, the 7'2"MHM Extreme I own will work with treble hooks and single point hooks as well as lighter baits, not ideal with weights under 5/16 but if we are only allowed 2 rods here I'll take it and I think it is as good as a MF for those applications. The 7'MH will do most work in heavy cover, and both work with single point hooks. I love the MM but too much it wont do with deeper and larger crankbaits and single point hooks that the MHM will.
I have g. Loomis mbr783 glx. It is the most versatile rod I have ever used. It can handle just about anything. It is a 6'6" mh fast rod. This is the rod that started me down a road of no return when it comes to higher end rods.
Thanks everyone for the grwat feed back. Looks like a 7' M and H are the way to go. Looks like it is time to go shopping
What's your budget? If you can swing $300 I'd recommend you look at a Megabass Orochi XX. Many of the rods in that series are quite versatile due to there unique tapers. Also the cosmetics and finish are top quality, and comparable to my St Croix Legend Xtremes.
I'd specifically suggest the Spinnerbait Special as a single rod that can handle stationary hooks like trigged creature baits and jigs, as well as spinnerbaits, squarebills, and top waters. And the sensitivity factor is there, in my hands just as sensitive as my Croix's. May not be the first choice for a dedicated jig rod, but for a jack of all trades hard to beat.
The action isn't as moderate as it may sound, plenty crisp/fast to get good hooksets. I've landed 3 lber a on creature baits and a 4lber on a squarebill.
My only complaint is the hook keeper design, mine now has a Fuji ezkeeper on it now bc it didn't hold up.
I have Megabass F6-72X4, and you can use it for jerkbait, crankbait, topwater, jigs, flipping and pitching, big worms, and swimbaits between the range of 3/8th to 3 and 1/4th of oz. If you are considering getting two 200 dollar rods, I would just get the X4.
My budget is looking to be around $100-125 each, so that X4 is looking pretty good if I coukd get away with one for now. Thanks IAY
If you are willing to spend 250 dollar total. Save up a little bit more and wait for the labor day sale for Orochi XX Tour Verstaile. I absolutely adore the Medium Fast taper on the megabass line and overall versatility of their heavy rods. I can assure you that the overall quality and sensitive of those rods will enhance your fishing experience.
Have you fished the Tour Versatile? I have it as well as the Spinnerbait Special. For me it really fishes a lot heavier then the Spinnerbait Special, and sets up faster, despite being only one power difference. In my hands the Spinnerbait Special feels to be the more versatile and all purpose. Admittedly I have not tried throwing any treble hook baits on the TV, only jigs, trigs, crigs, and frogs. On 8/29/2014 at 9:43 AM, IAY said:If you are willing to spend 250 dollar total. I'd be interested to hear if you've thrown moving baits on it, And what your experience with has been. Might make me try using it in some other ways

I haven't had the chance to fish the XX rods before, and there is no store that carries high end stuff around me so I am stuck to just buying them online without testing them. Only MB rods I have are the F4-68X7 and F6-72X4, so I really can't comment on verstaility of the XX rods you listed, but I felt didn't have any problem with the taper of X4 when I am fishing with treble hooks compared to my X7. I think you can give better advice to the OP than me, and I just wanted to say what I would have done if I was in his shoes, based on all of the good reviews I have been hearing about the XX series and my experience with Megabass rods.
Thanks for the response. I'm jealous of your X4 and X7! I love my two XX rods, and am looking forward to getting a couple more. While the TV and SS are both rated Med Fast in my hands I feel the TV is closer to Fast and just a more powerful stick. I've been told that the tapers on the XX rods are all a bit faster then their other series bc they were targeting the US angler with them. But MB does say the TV can be used for big spinnerbaits and large crankbaits, so based on that and your input I will try throwing a few other baits on it and see how it performs. On 8/29/2014 at 11:25 AM, IAY said:I haven't had the chance to fish the XX rods before, and there is no store that carries high end stuff around me so I am stuck to just buying them online without testing them. @op they are releasing a new rod in the XX series called the Diablo, will be an f5-72 Fast action, might also fit the bill as a great all purpose stick for you. It's likely to be my next purchase once it hits the market.

I have never seen megabass rods on sale. Gary at the tackle trap said no one discounts them.

Hmm I see. I don't really buy my stuff from USA so I didn't know. I would still save up another 50 dollars for the XX though... But that's how bad tackle addiction starts... It's only another 50 dollars...It's only another 50 dollars...How bad can another 50 dollars be?... But I definitely think the versatility and the sensitivity on heavier Megabass rods really warrants the price.
Yep, no Megabass products are included in Holiday sales per Megabass policy. If you're gonna do one rod get the spinner bait special. I feel the taper is extremely universal. Check out the review on TT. If you don't want to spend that much the moderate fast Kistler Klx rods are very universal as well. The taper is right between a mod fast and fast imo.
I also second the Spinnerbait Special. Hook keeper does fail though. Very light and sensitive rod. I just got it recently but like it so far.

Maybe if you're fishing from a boat, but if he's fishing from shore and is working the bait with his rod tip down it could be.
