Need help to dial in my Whopper Plopper 90/110 Setup for fairly open water (reservoir) : I currently have a 7' MF spinning rod , 3000 series with #20 lb. Power Pro braid , 7'MHF spinning rod , 4000 series , #30 lb. Power Pro braid with bait caster set up I have a 6:4:1 and a 7:1 reels available with a 7' MH bait cast rod and the same #30 lb. Power Pro. *I have some #50 lb. braid available - but I think that may be overkill with a WP 90 & 110 only ... Your thoughts on what you would use if again , only using the WP 90 & 110 sizes ? Thanks in advance ...

I use 30lbs braid on my Revo Rocket for all of the size Whopper Ploppers.

I dont throw one on a spinning rod. But if i did it would only be the 90 and I use 10lbs braid.

I only throw the 110, which weighs in at 1 oz.

I use 40 lb braid, 6.3:1 BC, on a 7’3” graphite MH M rated 1/2 to 1 and 3/8. Works well for me.

I've been tossing the 90 around on a 7' medium-fast rod on spinning gear spooled with 30 lbs braid and a lighter leader. It doesn't need to go real fast so I've done okay with non-baitcasting. Can't comment on the 110, I don't have any bass rods that'll throw that much weight.

I'm leaning towards putting the #30 lb. braid on both the Daiwa 400 series spinning reel with MH F 7' spinning rod ; BPS 6:3:1 with 7' MH F bait cast rod ... I am hoping #30 lb. braid will be just right for the WP 90 / 110 sizes (as long as I prevent any shock to the braid ) . *I also have #20 lb. and #50 lb. braid but feel the #20 lb. might be too light and the #50 lb. braid would be over kill ... Straight braid tied with a palomar knot and then call it a day .

I throw my 90's on 30lb. Power Pro braid. That's on the following spinning setups...7ft. M/F, 7ft. MH/F and a 7'4" MH/M (crankin' rod). I throw my 110's (and 130's) on casting gear...7'5" H/F with 50lb. Sunline FX/2 braid. As for the line size, I personally wouldn't go below 30lb. or above 50lb. braid. Mono or copoly could be different.

I have seen You Tube posts where those with experience use a quality swivel connected to a #3 ~ #5 split ring on the WP .

Not to get off topic but it's worth stating that the WP90 size has a couple of design flaws (since corrected in the WP 110 size) : The rear of the WP 90 does not have much (if any weighting) thus it makes the head want to dig under water . To remedy , you have to keep the head up by keeping your line up out of the water a few feet in front of the WP 90 . I believe lighter braid (#20LB maybe - definitely #30 lb. braid) is the way to go with the WP 90 size to keep the line out of the water to keep that head high and rear end low (again , the WP 110 corrects that with a new internal weighting scheme ) .

Mine sit tail down when idle, I don't seem to have this issue with my 90's.

I made a custom deal. I attached a crankbait snap to a small spro power swivel. Allows me to make it zig zag and such which is a neat little trick to do sometimes. I like the swivel because if the rear section gets gunk stuck in the gap then the whole lure turns instead of just the rear end. Could cause line twisting.

I only have 110's and fish them on a 6'6" MHF baitcaster with 30 pound braid. I use a snap with everything since I bank fish and only bring 1 or 2 rods with me.

On Sunday I fished the Bluegill 110 (also have Bone and Munky Butt) and caught 8 bass in about 45 minutes. Four were between 4 and 5 pounds and nothing under 2 pounds. That was the first time this year bass hit any topwaters in the lagoons I fish. I was beginning to worry that the WP had lost its magic!

Bluebasser 86 : Thanks to confirm the #20 lb. braid will work with a WP90 / 110 ... I just spooled up a Daiwa spinning outfit with a #3000 series / 7' MH F spinning rod - Now I'm ready to go: "Johnny Unitas" with it and bomb those smaller WP's out there a ways (lol) .

I fish the 90 on a 7' M/F with a 6.3:1 reel and 12lb Trilene XT mono. Don't have the 110 yet.

I use a 7' mh/f and a 6:3:1 reel backed with 50lb strike pro braid and a 15lb mono leader.

16lb. mono on either of my walking bait rods. My new favorite is a Witch Doctor Surman 50g.. Great walking bait rod or 110 Plopper.

I know a guide here on Table Rock who has his clients throw the 90 on a spinning rod... for the safety of everybody on the boat.

Im going this year with a 17lb mono leader on my braid for my 110.

seems like with braid on the 110 it seems to not swim immediately or gets tangled up on the trebles.

Good replies - it could be that having a 2 ft. leader of 15 lb. ~ 17 lb. mono / co-poly leader could be a benefit with the 110 .

My Whopper Plopper 90s are thrown on a MF spinning rod that is rigged with 30lb braid. There is a ball bearing swivel connection between the braid and lure.

I know some have had issues with the 90s nose diving, but the pair I have run level for straight retrieve or walking the dog.

I've never considered walking a WP before, but I'll be trying it next wknd. I've thrown 90(munky butt)/110 (i know it)/130 (powder) all on a 6'6" MH AG Vendetta spinning rod. The 130 overloaded it, but I heaved it instead of casting. Rod tip upon the 90 so it swims smoother. the 110 is the best of the bunch and I've yet to catch anything on the 130. All my fishing buddies have had epic success with the bone colour then again the bone colour crushes in all R2S lures.

I haven't caught any fish to date on the Whopper Plopper with a straight retrieve or even the start stop retrieve. I was so frustrated with it that I stopped throwing it. I mean, the WP is suppose to be this awesome fish catcher and I was getting squat. While out with a friend who fishes FLW tournaments, he saw the WP in my topwater box and said that would be a great lure to through. I laughed and said, "Yeah, no confidence in it." He told me to work it like a Spook walking the dog or like a prop bait with short pops. He's never steered me wrong. When I walked the dog with the WP, it got crushed. Its my primary method of retrieve for the WP now.

I've got a huge blowup on the straight retrieve once but too much slack screwed up hookset. It hasn't been a performer for me either, so I'm interested in trying that technique. Thanks!

My 90's and 110's are on a 7' Carbonlite MH fast tip with 17lb mono on a Curado 200E7. It works for me.

I'm trying 110's this year on an old Lamiglas SR705r I picked up cheap. It's traditionally a deep cranking rod, but I'm hoping it works for this application.
