Pline vs Sufix vs Trilene vs BPS XPS mono Line? 2025

fishing user avatarLSU Fan reply :

Out of the above brands of regular Mono fishing lines, Pline, Sufix, Trilene, BPS XRS, like to get some feedback as to which would be the preferred to use.  Not primarily fishing rocks or heavy cover but open water.  Sure would like some feedback?

fishing user avatarTnRiver46 reply :

Out of those, trilene although I’ve never heard of the last one. p line handles well but I bought some kind of gold color and I can’t see it. It’s very strong also, you can pull a canoe back upstream with 8 lb test

fishing user avatarLSU Fan reply :

Big'un thanks for you response and the last line I brought up is Bass Pro Shop's XPS line.

If you were to do a blind test comparison of all the above against Berkley Big Game in lb test ranging from 8 lb to 20 lb there would be little if any difference.

4 lb to 6 lb Trilene XL verses Sunline Super Natural mono would be very similar with Maxima 4 and 5 lb Ultra Green being my choice.

The superior mono to the above listed from 11 lb to 25 lb is Sunline Defier Armillo smaller diameters but pricey IMO.

Many years ago I only used Trilene XL while my buddy stayed with Stren.  I use other lines now only because I wanted to try something different.  Never had a problem with XL.  Strictly on spinning reels.

Tried 8# P-Line CX.  Broke in the spool, but that may have been because I was learning to cast and had a few (well, maybe more than a few) backlashes.  It handled very well.  May give it another chance now that I am familiar with baitcast reels.  Tried some 10# FloroClear.  Broke too easily.  Changed out the reel that night (was visiting Florida and luckily had a couple extra reels with me).  Maybe I got a bad spool.

Sufix Elite 12# was the first Sufix line (other than braid) that I tried.  Still on my Zillion 50th Anniversary reel.  I like it.  I use a fair amount of 8# and 12# Siege.  Like the Neon Tangerine.  Easy to see.  Coils after sitting awhile (as does any line other than braid), but I don't have problems with it coiling on the spool.  Which Big Game can do the first few casts.  Once wet, they are all good as far has memory is concerned.  I just take it easy the first few casts.

Never used XPS.

I thrown Berkley Big Game for everything except frogs & punching for 40 some odd years.

You will not find a more abrasion resistant line bar none!

That's how I feel too. Trilene Big Game is the most consistent line I've found in the last 30 years. Stren comes close, but misses the mark by a little bit. Trilene XL can't even approach the consistency of Big Game .... or the abrasion resistance. The only advantage to Stren is that once wet, it relaxes sooner than Trilene. That's OK; I can wait a couple more minutes.  ????  Sufix Advantage has very little abrasion resistance .... and that's in 14 lb. test.  I used Elite a couple years ago, and while it wasn't bad, it didn't show me anything exceptional, either. The only other Sufix line I've heard people rave about is Siege, and I've never used it, so I can't comment on it.

Exactly!

With Big Game there's never a surprise with abrasion resistance or shock absorption.

fishing user avatarMobasser reply :

My favorite all around line for baitcast reels is Big Game also.

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

When it comes to fishing line everyone has their favorite.  Not really favorites, but for mono use I have used BPS Excel 8lb on my spinning reels for 19 years, and the same amount of time for baitcasters with BPS Excel 14lb and XL 17lb mono used for spinner baits and chatter baits.   I also used BPS Excel 20lb mono for frog fishing years ago, but now braid.

Step up to the plate and spool Tatsu #12.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

Out of the ones you picked in order >Trilene XL, P-Line Flouroclear (go one weight size heavier though), Sufix (good line no issues), and then I would not use the BPS stuff (good but I have found it inconsistent).

fishing user avatarLSU Fan reply :

I have to add this comment.  Years ago when I started to use fluorocarbon line I kept breaking off everything.  I kept changing line thinking it was a bad spool of fluoro.  Later I found that to be wrong it was the knot I uses.  I had always used the Palomar know for everything.  Now through advise of a fellow fishermen I use, specially with fluorocarbon line, a knot I saw Shaw Grigsby demonstrate online I call the Grigsby Knot.  I would try to explain how to tie this knot but it is a bit involved so I strongly advise going online and search "Shaw Grigsby and the best knot for Fluorocarbon"

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The good thing about mono is it isn't knot sensitive and the Palomar knot works good with all the brands you listed.

The Shaw Grigsby knot is the old original braid knot or double line clinch knot and Iike all the specialty FC knots doesn't solve the 80% knot strength issue.

WRB, I come to you because I appreciate your responses here and always respect your opinion...I was always a Trilene XL guy but bought some Sunline Super Natural recently and noticed how thin it was at the same advertised strength (.012 Sunline vs. .014 Trilene and a whopping .015 for Suffix Elite all at 14lb.)...hard water here so I haven't had a chance to test myself, but considering that diameter (.012) is comparable to most 10lb lines, Super Natural has to do something for manageability, right? I know most lines are rated under their true strength to begin with, so do you think they are sacrificing strength (closer to actual) or is it simply a better line?

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

Stay away from chinese made line ..big game here also

fishing user avatarMbirdsley reply :

Smaller spinning set ups I like Berkley xl. 8lbs xl is my go to river and spinning line. Bait caster or 10 lbs and above 10bs And it’s berkly big game.  Stuff is so cheap and I think it’s on of the smaller dia vs lbs mono that there is.  I was at bps and they had the cheapest I seen at 6.99 for the big spill which, I think is 1500 yards.  Can’t beat it.

fishing user avatarmoguy1973 reply :

P-Line CX Premium is my go to, non-braid line.  For braid I'm a fan of Power Pro Super Slick 8.

fishing user avatarjohnD. reply :

P-line Cx or Big Game , can't go wrong with either. Never used Sunline Super Natural , gonna try it here in the near future.

fishing user avatarSpinLight reply :

P-line premium CX for light and ultralight spinning reels, 4 lb to 10 lb. I have tried almost all mono/copoly, including some JDM lines. Small diameter, good abrasion resistance.

If @dodgeguy meant Sufix Advance Monofilament then I agree. I've only used it in 10# on a baitcaster but I really liked how low-stretch it felt compared to Trilene XL.
