Question Regarding Too Much Stiffness For Worm Set Up 2025

fishing user avatarBassinNCstyle reply :

I bought a veritas rod yesterday over the carbonlite because it seemed to have faster action. Wondering today if there is such a thing as too much stiffness/action for a worm/jig rod. Like if I put braid on it would it be too much?

fishing user avatarDiggy reply :

The veritas makes a great worm and jog rod, you'll have no problems with straight braid or adding a leader. Ive used mh/h in both situations in the generation 1 version.

fishing user avatarBrianinMD reply :

For jig/worm to me there is not an issue with to much stiffness, the answer would be different if throwing tremble baits.

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

As long as the rod has enough backbone to it I don't think it matters.

My punch rod is a H/XF that I use 60# braid on and wouldn't change a thing.

Mike

fishing user avatarBassinNCstyle reply :

Thanks, I was second guessing my self.

fishing user avatarPenguino reply :

Yeah for lighter worms like senkos and t-rigs a 7' MH rod extra fast action is the best!!!

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

The veritas are broomsticks. It can hurt casting, because the rod won't load. For hooksets, I think the stiffer the better to get that hook to penetrate.

fishing user avatar0119 reply :

I found the action of my MH Veritas too stiff for casting some more wind resistant and weightless baits. It does well using mono and I relegate it to throwing big ez's and ez swimmers.

So it boils done to a trade off castability vs power hook set and which one you like the best.

How much do you think it actually affects casting?

I was wondering if I should use mono or a fluorocarbon with stretch since it is so stiff but I do like the power to set the hook too.

This makes wonder if I should have went with the carbonlite.

No, you should be fine.. Casting may be a slight issue, depending.. But rod manufacturing has caught up with the whole braid thing, I still use mono blends on stiffer action rods, you will get no complaints from me..

What mono blends do you use?

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Just make sure you don't use to light of a wire hook or you'll bend the hook out on the hook set, especially if you use braided fishing line.

fishing user avatarBassinNCstyle reply :

That makes sense.

Big game XT , Triplefish camo, CXX, Yozuri hybrid, Silverthread, Gamakatsu, CX, Sunline, Suffix Siege, Maxima, Plus FC lines... I suppose the actual makeup of each line could be argued, but for my sanity I group these into mono blends, except FC

fishing user avatarBassinNCstyle reply :

Off topic, but what is difference between suffix seige vs elite?

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Honestly, for me, it was $1.98 for 660 yards, lol

But, it's pretty good line for my light duty rigs (#8)

Claims are superior abrasion res, super tough, I wouldn't go that far, but it's good line at my pricing...

Loading is a big issue and determined by the weight you intend to use.

Siege is absolutely terrible. I have 17 Pound test suffix siege camo and it feels like an metal wire. The memory is INSANE on the siege. The elite is supposed to be much more supple and so you probably should go with that. The siege has a coating that is supposed to make it tougher but also makes it have a TON of memory.

Just practiced casting with 15lb invizx, it did OK. I can see how it will need some weight to the lure. May have to downside the line but I tend to favor stronger lines for power, might need to change that approach.

You should be fine on your line size. I use 12-20Lb Berkely Triline is HI-VIS Colors so i can watch my line. depending on what size weight your using. I dont throw less than about 3/16 on a MH baitcaster. I prefer a 1/4oz or 5/16oz weight. so I can really get it out there. On the Note you have to adjust your hooksets with mono. On braid you set the hook the same everytime. On mono if he is 40yds out when you get bit you have to reel into him good and make sure all your slack is gone before you slam that hook and drive it through his mouth. where as next to the boat you dont need to be so aggressive.

I have heard of bass fisherman so good that bass literally tremble in fear of them, but now are there lures that do the same thing??

Senko's kind of tremble when they fall weightless, but I don't believe they are scared of being eaten...

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

Lol too much stiffness and worm same sentance,!

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Action and stiffness are correlated but still largely independent of one another. I don't have any hands on with the ABU rods but hear that they tend to fish heavier than similarly labeled rods. A fast action is beneficial in a jig rod whether you use braid or any other line.

The Veritas do feel somewhat underrated.. I'm curious what benefit is there with a fast action rod vs extra fast?

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

It's just a matter of degree plus the terms are subjective. An XF is beneficial in a drop shot rod where you're doing a reel set and other times you expect a light bight and/or quick hook set. I build jerkbbait rods with an XF but soft tip. I feel it's easier to impart subtle twitches that way.
