Help with my finesse reel/line 2025

fishing user avatarSharkicane reply :

Hey all,

I recently got a president 25 for my finesse rig. I got it spoiled with 8lb seaguar red label flouro. Now it was spoiled by machine at a store. Maybe the guy did it wrong I’m not sure. However I have an extremely frustrating problem. I am constantly getting knots in it during cast and retrieve. I have added wait and casted it out and let it sit in the water multiple times, I’ve used KVD line conditioner several times. Nothing seems to help.

I am at the point where I just want to change lines cause I don’t want to deal with it any longer. I’ve been looking at nanofil seems the reviews are split on it. I’ve thought of switching to braid and just using a leader. I’m not quite sure what to do or what line to buy.

I just want something that will work I am using it for soft plastics, a finesse c rig, small crank baits. Im really at a loss here cause the flouro I got is kinda pricey and I can’t really use it.

fishing user avatarBankBasser reply :

I've used Fireline for the last 8 years, or so, on all my spinning gear with zero problems. I'm so used to it the few times I've tried going back to mono or flouro I've hated both. I have neuropathy in my hands from diabetes and the easiest knot for me to deal with is the improved clinch knot and have never in 8 years had it fail with Fireline. I use 4lb for my light setup, 6lb for my ml setup, 8lb for my m setup and tie straight to my lure with no leader using both crystal and hi vis yellow and have never felt handicapped doing so. It lasts a long time, too. That'd be my recommendation. Good luck!

fishing user avatarmattkenzer reply :

Personally, I tried fluoro on one spinning reel a few years back, made a half dozen cast then put it away.

Did not like it at all.

I switched from mono to braid on most of my spinning reels and have never looked back.

IMHO, you have to try it.

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

For that size reel and finesse style fishing I would go with 6lb P-Line Floroclear or 6lb Kastking Fluorokote line.

That should be all you need for weightless plastics, small cranks and dropshots.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I've said this once today already....person had the same issue.

I have yet to find an 8# fluoro that plays well on a spinning outfit.  What has worked well for me is Finesse 7.2#, and Tatsu or Invisx in 6# size.

fishing user avatarVilas15 reply :

I feel like the president 25 is relatively small spool so fluoro is just not going to work too well. I don't think there's anything you can do other than switching line. If you want to use mono I'd use Sufix Elite in 6 or 8 lb. Has worked for me until recently switching over to Sufix 832 braid in 15 lb. The sufix elite is very manageable vs sufix siege which is tougher and better for baitcasters.

That...I have 8lb KastKing Fluorokote on my Pflueger 30X, and I've had zero problems with it.

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

I've had zero issues using 8lb fluoro on my 2500 sized reels, which are roughly a 30/35 in Pflueger's lineup. For 1500/25 sized reels, I don't ever go anything higher than 6lb diameter, and typically use 4lb. The spool diameter is not really wide enough to handle much heavier line.

I have 8lb Kastking Fluorokote on most of my size 2000 and 3000 spinning reels. It is one of my favorite lines.

I have recently purchased some 12lb for my Baitcasters.

Was there a specific lure you were throwing? Or was it random? I rig my TRD's with no leader, and after a couple hours of throwing them I have to pinch my line to get line twists out because the TRD twirls so much during my casts.

It was a finesse c rig with a 1/4 oz bullet weight, swivel and trigged senko. So I thought for sure it had enough weight that I wouldnt have any issues. I was very wrong.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

FWIW, I would also recommend braid to you. I switched

years ago and have never once wanted to go back to a

mono/copoly/fluoro line (except for leaders).

I'm seriously considering braid and just using a leader, what kind do you use for your finesse rig?

All my spinning reels get 15# PowerPro Super Slick 8.

One or two may still have 10# PowerPro regular. Either

is great, I got the 15# on a deal, so got a lot of it to

use.  Their 10# is equivalent of 2# mono diameter, and

the 15 is 4# diameter equivalent. You'll get plenty to

spool on.

Both are yellow, helps me with line watching. And I use

a leader for every one of my setups.

Sounds good I might go with that, there is a lot of matted and sparse grass, branches, trees and other cover where I fish so braid would probably be a good choice there. What size leader do you use? Does it change at all or just keep a set length tied on?

I use from 6-10 normally, and will use 15 on occasion.

Generally a full stretch of my arms out is the length of

leader I use. I change it out only when it's gotten mangled,

nicked, or cut down too far from changing out hooks, etc.

I picked up some hivis power pro super 8 in 10# test (it’s all they had) and got it spooled up. Hopefully it does the trick. They didn’t have the flouroclear in under 8 either. Pretty limited options lol

fishing user avatarArmtx77 reply :

I will break from the norm and reccomend NanoFil, in the 8lbs test.

Outside of the cost of it and paying close attention to your knot tieing skills, it has been a good line for me the last 8 months.

I use about 50yds of mono backer and than get about 100yds of 8lbs NanoFil on top of the backer on the Daiwa BG 1500...helps to stretch out that $15 spool a little ways.

As far as the knot. Tie the knot Berkley reccomends(Double Palomar?) and you are good to go. Let your drag and superior fish fighting skills, do the rest.

fishing user avatard-camarena reply :

Simple. Braid+leader. Uni to uni knot

I’m extremely impressed and pleased with my results this morning. Just tiny flick of the wrist and it goes a mile out there. I could even cast my little shad rap #5 with no issues. I only got 1 wind knot which I am going to assume was my fault. I either tried to cast to hard or was working the fluke terribly.

Power pro super slick 8 ftw.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Wind knots are what happens when you get twist in braid.  Troll the line out, and reel it back in using slight pressure between your thumb and index finger.

fishing user avatarOkobojiEagle reply :

NanoFil's coating will wear off after a year's use and the distance casting will suffer... I went back to 4, 6, 8 & 10lb original fused Fireline.  Been using the Fireline since the mid 90's without problems, but I still try new lines... only to return to the Fireline.

I will be more careful and on the look at for them. By the time I noticed it it was pretty well cinched tight. Does that make a difference or will trolling it still get those out?

#8-and-up fluoro on spinning gear is where people start to see a lot of problems that can ruin their day of fishing.  If you haven't used braid yet, once you start using it, especially on spinning reels, there's a good chance it'll change your life and make fishing much more enjoyable.  Keep the straight fluoro on baitcasting reels but for spinning reels stick to braid or mono.  I would avoid PowerPro Slick8 and Nanofil for first time braid, go with regular PowerPro or Sufix 832, #15, and use a fluoro leader.  Uni-to-uni works but if you start to see breaking at the knot, don't be embarrassed to use a swivel (Size 10 Spro Power Swivel).

Just untangle the wind knot, and trolling it out will fix it.

fishing user avatarDrew03cmc reply :

I've begun using Nanofil 12lb and absolutely love it on spinning gear.
