Shimano Chronarch 50E. 2025

fishing user avatarBasshunterJGH reply :

I have a couple questions about this reel. First, is it the same thing as the curado 50 that everybody loves with a different paint job? Also, what is the heaviest lure you are comfortable casting on this reel? I'm considering buying one my friend has the 200e and loves it I'd like to try a 50 just wondering what the heaviest lure you guys are comfortable fishing w/ this reel is.

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

Yes, it is basically a white curado. As for lure weight. I've thrown 3/4oz spinnerbaits on one but I'll say it's not practical. It was the only reel I had with me. The reel doesn't hold a lot of line. If you were in close quarters the capacity wouldn't matter as much though.

fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

Using braid solves your line capacity issues.

For lure weight, anything normal. A full size Spook, heavy jig etc.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Couldn't say.  I use 50 size reels on Medium or less powerful rods.  Shimano 200s, Zillions, etc. go on MH or more powerful rods.  Personal preference.  I have no line problem with the 50 size as they get lighter lines...normally 8# mono.  Love both the Curado 51E and 201E7.  You should pick up at least one of each.  :teeth:

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Never owned a Curado, but bought 2 Chronarch 50e reels in the past couple years.

Love 'em. I throw weightless Zoom Finesse worms all the way up to 1/2 oz traps. Have thrown heavier stuff with no problems (like carolina rigs - but that's a rarity for me).

Awesome reels, man.

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

I fish a variety of jigs with my Curado 50E's with 15lb flouro and have no problem.

fishing user avatarBasshunterJGH reply :

I'll be using 10 lb diameter sunline mono, so line capacity is not an issue. I was mostly concerned about how heavy a bait I can throw on this reel.  So you guys are comfortable fishing 3/4 oz baits occasionally? Thanks for the answers. I appreciate the feedback. :)

fishing user avatarJaheff reply :

The 50 size shimano's are a fun platform to tune up too!!

There's no issue there.

fishing user avatarTurkey sandwich reply :

It's an awesome reel. I keep mine spooled with braid and it casts everything from the light stuff (1/8th oz or so) to the heavy stuff (full sized spooks, large Crankbaits, etc) without a problem.

All you need in life are 50 and 100 sized Shimanos.

Ya a 100 size (core) would probably be perfect for what I'm looking for. 200 is a little bigger than I like for a cranking/topwater/jerkbait combo. Unfortunately I can't afford one yet!;)
fishing user avatarJeziHogg reply :

And to get back to your question, think about it. Lets say the average weight of lures you use are 1/2oz, and the average line diameter is about .33mm. Most people can get a good 35-40 yard cast with that setup, a 50 sized Shimano will hold about 85 yards of 12lb test (.33mm) so even if you can cast out more then 40 yards, you're only using half the spool capacity.

My thoughts exactly. At the very best I would be getting a 50 yard cast with a 1/2 oz crankbait, if I can get 100 or so yds of .32 diameter 15 lb defier in the reel, that's still only half capacity.

I picked up a 51e this year and a curado 201g.  In comparison the 51e is much smoother, cast further, and the drag seems smoother.  Also, and it may just be me, the reel seems to have a bit more power when handling bigger fish.  One thing I love about this reel, it's just fun to fish.

What?  You aren't making 100 yard casts?  :teeth:   As it turns out my best guess is that I average 30-35 yards on most casts with 40 or so being one of my better ones.  I do think there has been a time of two when that was exceeded by a fair amount, but it isn't what I consider normal.  85 yards doesn't sound like a lot, but we have to remember bass aren't Marlins, Tarpon, etc.  They may take a little line, but not 40 yards.  Admittedly my PB was a little over 7 lbs. so I could be wrong.

fishing user avatarbass1980 reply :

If you're running 10lbs then line capacity is no issue with the 50. I run 20lb braid and to me it's is the most versatile reel in my line up. If running braid I really think this is the MOST versatile reel made. I just can't compliment this reel enough.

On one of my setups I'm using the 50e as a cranking reel. Shallow to medium divers. It can handle 5/8oz cranks diving around 12 ft and be finesse enough to throw shad raps #5 at 3/16oz. I don't crank a lot so I only have one cranking rod. I chose a GL2 MHM cranking rod as my all around rod. Enough back bone for square bill and ripping lipless cranks out of grass and hopefully be able to cast light cranks. At first I had trouble dialing my two really good reels to throw 3/16 and 1/4oz cranks. The reels were a T3 1016 and a Chronarch ci4+. I mean those two reels are knows to be great casters but I think my rod was the real factor in why I had trouble. Then I switched to my 51e and wow, I am able to cast 3/16 shad raps much better! So a MHM rod with a 51e may be the best all around cranking setup if you are not going deep divers.

I have another setup I use the 50e for punching 1/2 oz to 1oz punch weights. I was worried at first being it was meant to be a semi finesse reel but the 50e has the guts and power unlike most finesse reels. Unlike the Daiwas I have, their small reels just doesn't seem right with braid and heavy weights. I believe the 50e is a hybrid. I will add a longer handle for next season on this setup to get more leverage though just because. It may not be the best punch reel but it can handle it. I have not had any issues at all.

And yes, the 50 series is smoother and cast further than the 200 series. Waiting patiently for a Curado I 50...tick tock tick tock.

I suspect an update to the shimano 50 lp line in the next year so I'd buy this model while you can, its an all time great.

I've been suspicious of this as well. I buy 90% of my fishing stuff online and BPS no longer has the 50 Core or Chronarch. I hope they come out with a ci4+ 50size.

fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

My 51s and 1016s are the most versatile sub 200 dollar reels I've used to date. With that being said I don't care for either with cranks that dive much more than 15 feet, or ripping three quarter ounce traps. I feel there are better reels for that. Defier is the most excellent choice of lines too!!

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

For your original post questions I would say the reel is more than just light bait or finesse oriented reel. Your only limitation comes from line capacity. The 50 series Shimano reels are a personal favorite of mine and I have 4 variations. Your Curado to Chronarch 50e comparison is fair. The knobs on the Chronarch are bigger and often preferred knobs to those of the Curado and for size reference they are basically what you would get on a 200e. There may be a bearing or two more or in place of bushing but yes a good portion of the reel outside of the paint is the same. You can use these reels for really anything that doesn't put severe torque on the internal components of it. By this I mean big spinnerbaits, big swimbaits, Alabama rigs, or deep cranks. The reel would fish jigs, standard cranks/moving baits, flip/pitch, texas rig, frogs, weightless plastic, etc... just fine. I run 8 - 15 # line on mine but should you go braid you can do the equivalent in braid ratings.

They also have many tuning parts and great re-sell value and popularity among others that should it not work you could unload it pretty easily.

fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

Dont forget the JDM variants in the Shimano 50 lineup. The Scorpion XT1000 and the Aldenaran MG and MG7.
