Shimano Vs Lews 2025

fishing user avatarLars1115Angel reply :

Stuck on getting the Lews BB1 Pro or a new Shimano Curado 200. I want a reel that can cast the farthest and is the smoothest. And will last a while. I don't want to hear about customer service and which will "take care of me". That to me is all background. I just want to know which reel is better suited for my needs stated above.

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

They are both amazing reels, and are probably pretty much equal. That being said...

I think X-Ship makes a huge difference in smoothness, especially under load. I would just get the Citica I if I am fishing freshwater.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Is this a new topic from your new reel post regarding Lew's BB2, you owe answers to a few replies.

Tom

fishing user avatarLars1115Angel reply :

Srry about that. I chose the bb1 over the bb2 because I fish for mainly bass and occasionally pike and a bb2 is not really necessary for that much line.

fishing user avatarLars1115Angel reply :

Also has anyone tried the new Lews TP G. It won the icast 2015 best reel but except for that I haven't heard much about it?!

My BB1Pro lasted all about 3-4 hours, the first outing, and it started having issues then proceeded to get worse. Its been returned. My shimano reel I bought at the same time as the BB1Pro(spring2014) has been trouble free.

fishing user avatark3bass reply :

I'm definitely not a shimano fan, but in this case I would say look for whichever you could find cheapest. The tournament pro or the citica or curado I. The BB1 would be better for heavier baits.

What were the issues?

fishing user avatarMidwestF1sh reply :

The only issue I have with my bb1 is the centrifugal break springs pop out but I just keep a little screwdriver and tighten the screws as needed. I tried shimano and have nothing bad to say about them but love Lew's. I'm onto 11 baitcasters from them and love them all. Bb1 casts a mile!!

Typical lews stuff. Knobs peel, brakes turn themselves on, and level wind sticks.

Did I get it right quakenshake? Lol

Close

But my level wind became very loose and the line would not lay on the spool correctly

fishing user avatark3bass reply :

Yeah I had the knob problem. Lews sent me new handles free no questions asked.

My buddy had two new shimano metaniums that the little rubber grips on the thumb bars fell off right away. Shimano wanted him to send the reels in for them to evaluate the problem. What a joke! At least lews will admit fault to a problem and resolve it.

Maybe Shimano cares about fixing that in future reels so they asked him to send it in? How is it a joke to want to fix things in future reels that could be a problem? Do you want to keep having to replace the new handles in future models?

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Overall build quality and performance are comparable in models with like features and price point. Longevity wise, Shimano has a very good track record that's hard to argue with.

You can't be serious. If you don't see why it's a joke to send them 2 brand new 400 dollar reels because they used cheap glue and the thumb grips fell off..well then I don't know what to say. This wasn't an isolated case, it's a well known problem with those reels.

Same thing with the crap clutches and brakes lews(doyo) uses. Well documented. I'd take a piece of rubber falling off over mechanical problems any day of the week

I had mine for good 2 years and none of that happened. You can't be serious about seeing few of cases on Internet forums and call this problem "well known", just like how I don't believe Lews reels have these "wide spread" issues. I think you are overreacting by the tone of your posts.

fishing user avatarLars1115Angel reply :

The only reason that I didn't want to hear it was because I've heard a TON of things about the customer service and how each will take care of you just as well as the other

fishing user avatarillinifan4152 reply :

No experience with lews but I do have a shimano Curado I, along with many E series shimanos and they are absolute quality and have all been issue free.

fishing user avatarGetJigginWithIt reply :

Lars you would probably be better to go and check out each reel seperate and maybe mount on a rod to see which one feels better to you. See if the dealer will let you try casting a plug. Asking which reel is better on this forum, or any forum in that case, tends to flip the kindergarten playground switch of mine is better than yours mentality and you will never get a straight answer. Unfortunately, your question will receive very subjective answers and it will end up only you can answer by doing a side by side comparison. I have to believe there is a bait shop or shops around you that sell the 2 brands for you to check out.

Yep, and it didn't even take 2 whole pages to get there.

There's tons of reviews out there on reels, all are going to be subjective, and probably a little bias. Best option is to get somewhere you can compare reels side by side and decide which you actually like best. Bring the rod you want to put them on if possible.

Now with that said,

LOCKDOWN!!
