Your Favorite Brand Of Reels (Baitcast Or Spinning) 2024

fishing user avatarmaq88 reply :

my personal choice was Abu Garcia

not afraid of saying so lol! B)

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

Daiwa. By far the most comfortable fishing reels out there IMO. Also cast pretty dang far, as well as SHIMANO. But I chose Daiwa because the palmability and ergonomics of there reels are second to none.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Man, you guys are made for each other.

:o

fishing user avatarQUAKEnSHAKE reply :

I own all brands on the list but chose other, Pinnacle is my favorite.

fishing user avatarokiefisher64 reply :

Dont throw suff at me please unsure.gif Im new here but I have fallen in love with China reels the last few years. Especially the bigger reels that I use for Striper fishing. Better built than the ambassaduers and for half the cost. There is alot of cheap crap that comes out of China but great quality can be bought also. Cut out the middle man and buy direct.

Welcome to the boards :)

I've never seen "China" reels, maybe the ones on EBAY but not sure if those are the ones you are talking about.

Where in Oklahoma are you from?

As for my favorite reel, I can't really say. I own 6 different brands. lol My BPS tourny is probably my fav though. Even though it was a refurbished reel and has a couple of hitches in it's giddy up. It's my favorite to use, a close second is my Pinnacle Platinum.

fishing user avatarBass_Fanatic reply :

Pflueger!

fishing user avatarSausageFingers reply :

Abu is my personal favorite

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

Yikes - yet another reel survey! Here we go again - reel wars, June 2011 version...

I voted "other".

For baitcast reels, "other" means modern (say post 2009) BPS BC reels for their overall value. I have 2 Rick Clunns (heavy but OK), 6 PQs (great value and features - unmatched number of models [i have all 4 ratios offered]), 2 CLs (incredible feature set at their price), and 3 "C" model ProLites (nifty little reels - I really like these). I also have a RevoS, Curado 200E7 and 50E, Ambassadeur 5000 (60s vintage), and a couple older Shimano BC reels. Nowadays, it's really hard to go wrong with BC reels above the $100 list price range - all are probably fine reels that will give good service.

For spinning reels, "other" means, of all things, SHAKESPEARE ! I still have 6 mid-80s vintage Shakespeare Sigma 2200 spinning reels in front-line service with 3 more stored away (salt-water size). They still work, catch fish. My PB LMB (9.06) was caught with a Shakepeare 2200 spinning reel in 040 size. However, the lack of an instant anti-reverse is starting to bug me and my trusty Shakespeares will be gradually phased out with...PFLUEGERS. Right now, I have a couple Pflueger Presidents, a Supreme, and a couple Supreme XTs that are starting to replace the Shakespeares.

There's the "non-mainstream" vote !

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

I have no brand favorite ,I find it too stifling to go that route. B)

fishing user avatarCanga reply :

i had to go with other.

my only baitcaster is a BPS PQ (only use it for deep cranking)

as for spinning, all Pflueger...i have 2 presidents, an arbor, 2 supreme xt's and i just picked up a patriarch, which i have only used once, but im liking it alot.

fishing user avatarKYntucky Warmouth reply :

It's a toss up between shimano and daiwa for me, but I chose shimano.

fishing user avatarSenkoman12 reply :

I chose other. All my reels are BPS. I know they are probably made by Abu or Pfluegar but it says BPS on them so thats what I'll call them. I have had very good luck with BPS reels. The PQ, what an outstanding reel for $70.

fishing user avatarlineguide reply :

Shimano for me, both baitcast and spinning.

fishing user avatarScorcher214 reply :

I only own 4 combos, 3 of the reels are daiwa(regal, TD Advantaqge spin, td Advantage BC), and one is an okuma(citrix). I like the citrix a lot though, for the price, i think I will be buying another!

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

My favorites are Shimano for both but I have fished with and owned many brands and have liked several of them very much. I just like to stick to a certian model reel so each one I pick up is the same so I don't have to make those first couple bad casts while I relearn all that is unique to how each reel works. I've just always fished Shimano and had good success with them and until I get a reason to change I plan to stick with them. :)

fishing user avatarMaico1 reply :

Been using Shimano for a long time......

They're not made by any other company, in terms of reel manufacturer. BPS owns the tooling, and uses a factory in South Korea as well as one in Japan. "Most" of the OEM reels in the world are made from a couple different factories, Bass Pro is another that has gone that route. I wouldn't be surprised to see the purchase of a factory in the future.

In terms of what I fish, who cares. What matters is that I fish.

fishing user avatarbigfruits reply :

ive strayed a few times but always end up with Shimano. on the bicycle too.

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

Daiwa.

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

Abu.

Looks like posse leads in voting but posts look neck and neck.

fishing user avatarJavelin200 reply :

Other....I'm a Pflueger fan.

fishing user avatarMainebassin reply :

Johnny Morris Sig Series,,,,,3 chrome 1 blue 2 blk. love them

fishing user avatarFat-G reply :

Daiwa for me. I think that Shimano is a great company that makes a wonderful product, but for me Daiwa reels feel more solid and smooth. They feel like they are machined perfectly, and built like tanks.

fishing user avatarNJ-BassSnacher reply :

Shimano all the way! Ive actually just switched from Quantum to Shimano baitcasters. I always used Shimano spinning gear but recently just bought 2 Curados and they destroy my Energy's in every aspect and from what I hear last forever. I also just got a Crucial Pitching Stick and its great, with the best rod warranty available!

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Things are always changing, I'm now into Penn (conquer), class of the field in it's price range IMO.

fishing user avatardodgeguy reply :

pflueger

fishing user avatargrampa1114 reply :

I've never had better reels than my Okuma GT's

Yup. With the exception of my Ryobi Zauber (I just couldn't help myself) all of my spinning reels (and two of my fly reels) are Pflueger.

I'm down to two baitcasters right now, a Curado 200e7 and a US Reel "Hibdon Supercaster" and honestly can't tell you that one is any better than the other. Of the two, the Curado is more likely to wind up in the Flea Market than the Hibdon, strictly based on light-lure performance. I'm dying to try out one of the higher-end Supercasters as a possible replacement for the e7. I'm not worried about the performance, just the ergonomics.

With that said, I'd trade my e7 for a Patriarch 71LP in a heartbeat. I much prefer the Patriarch to the Curado, based solely on ergonomics and finish. Performance-wise, they're pretty equal.

fishing user avatarjj'sbassinforfun reply :

I am an old Abu round baitcaster guy. They have been in my boat for many years and still have the first one I bought. Just bought my first Revo winch.

Spinning has been with the same old snap shot since the early 90's

I have an old shimano BC too. Just hated paying for them. An the latest have us lefties out in the cold with the gear choices. So have most of the others as well!

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

For many years, it's been a tight race between Shimano and Daiwa (both fresh and saltwater).

Then about a year ago, I dismantled a Daiwa Advantage, and since that day I gave Shimano the keys to the city :D

fishing user avatarNBR reply :

I have Pflueger, Daiwa, Shimano, Quantum and BPS and like them all. Oh! In addition to these bait casters I have all of the former in spinning reels plus a Browning and they are all just fine.

fishing user avatarDave T. reply :

Shimano... and I'm not in the posse. :D

Fear not the Shimano Posse

Our Sheriff :woman: is currently looking for new members :D

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

After using my Penn Conquer for a couple of months and seeing them show up almost every where I fish, I'm now a big fan.

fishing user avatartholmes reply :

ABU is my favorite baitcaster, although I own a couple of older Shimanos that have been excellent reels.

I don't really use spinning rigs enough to have a clear-cut favorite, and I don't spend my money on high-end spinning gear. I have solid, reliable reels from Shimano, Pfleuger, Pinnacle and Mitchell.

fishing user avatarJim_M reply :

FWIW, another BPS-Johnny Morris Signature Series user here. A lot of reel and lot less than a car payment too.

fishing user avatarRaider Nation Fisher reply :

Ive fallen head over heels for my 6 Curados and my lonely Calcutta reel. Shimano all the way, baby!!!

fishing user avatarjignfule reply :

shimano

fishing user avatarFishing Rhino reply :

My seven spinning reels are Shimano Saros. Six 2500 series and one 1000 series. I suppose you could say they are my favorites. They are as smooth as butter and the drags are flawless. This will probably curse me, but I've never had a problem with them. I've had three BPS Johnny Morris spinning reels and gave them away. Mechanically, they were ok, but that titanium deposition finish was horrible. It blistered and started to flake off within a year. They replaced the first at no charge, but when the finish began to disintegrate on it, I gave them away.

The more expensive reels no doubt are better, but I'd rather have the savings to spend on electronics and other gear.

fishing user avatarChiCityBasser reply :

Quantum

fishing user avatarGavin reply :

Shimano for casting reels

Abu for spinning reels

fishing user avatarMK-9 reply :

Used to be a big Daiwa fan. Was all i'd buy. But, as the years have worn on I've opened up to Abu Garcia and Quantum. Never used one but have heard good stuff about the Pfleugers.

I consistently hear good things about Shimano, but haven't purchased one for over 15 years.

fishing user avatarnubasser reply :

Baitcasting:Abu Garcia

Spinning:Shimano

fishing user avatargrampa1114 reply :

Had a Pfleuger President...Lasted almost a whole season before it jammed up tighter than a bulls a.. never to move again and that was after one 10lb carp. No thanks...BPS for me now.

fishing user avatarPunkinseedfyretailz reply :

give me a pflueger

fishing user avatarPunkinseedfyretailz reply :

i've got a summit and a president, i've also got a carbonlite and a pinnacle, but for my money pflueger is the way to go

fishing user avatarRed reply :

Abu Garcia is my favorite. I own 5 S'L's, 1 Black Max, and 1 C4. That said, I really love my Daiwa Viento, I use it for flippin and pitchin. Excellent for this purpose, but it also can cast a mile if need be.

fishing user avatarflippin and pitchin reply :

I love my Lews. I fished my 5 BB1N models for over 24 years. I really like my new Lews as well. For spinning, the Shimano Soros and Symetre have been great performers. There are so many quality reels out there it's amazing.

fishing user avatarrumbal reply :

Baitcasting - Shimano

Spinning - Daiwa

fishing user avatarpurebass-ing reply :

I love both Abu garcia and daiwa! Love the fact that some of their parts are actually inter-changeable too! :P

Anyway, I think the BPS PQ is hard to beat at the price u can find one.

fishing user avatarbass-z-no reply :

It's hard to pin a favorite reel for almost every avid fisherman. There are so many good reels at great prices. I learned to throw a baitcaster on a Pinnacle. It was big and bulky, birdnests a lot, and had a very weak drag/brake system, but hey I got it for free and it made me a better baitcast caster now. Since then I have owned or own Abu Garcia Orra SX, Bass Pro Shops Carbonlite and Pro Qualifier, and the Quantum Smoke PT100. For my spinning reel I own a Browning Medallion. I have no complaints about any of the reels.
