Why does everyone hate favorite? 2024

fishing user avatarAustin Akins reply :

So I made a topic earlier asking about the flairs froggin and flippin stick and their reels and most comments were negative to the brand. I have a defender rod made by them and absolutely love it I use it more than my $300 G Loomis so I’m wondering why everyone hates them.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Not everyone does, and I'd be willing to wager a large number of people dumping on them have never picked one up, let alone fished one. Then again, they sell a lot of hype and not so much substance seems to be a commonly heard theme among those that have used them.

There's some big name pros using them, albeit only the very top end stuff, so it can't be all bad.

fishing user avatarwaymont reply :

I've handled Favorite reels. They were really low quality, with loose tolerances. I played around with 5 different  reels at a fishing show, fresh out of the box, and all 5 had something messed up on them. The vender was totally embarrassed by them. I've never tried out a rod.

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

KVD uses quantum, so what pros use has very little bearing on the quality of the brand.

fishing user avatarSmalls reply :

Their marketing tactics are gimmicky and cringeworthy. So even if they made a decent product, how they portray the brand to us pushes most serious fisherman away.

^^ This ^^  Plus they're connected to the Googan Squad, which further tarnishes their brand image.

That said, I understand they have a new marketing director, so that's probably all going to change soon.

I have both the "White Bird" and the "Big Sexy" rod.  The White Bird is more for trout than bass fishing, so that's sitting in the garage now.

Aside from being heavy, I'm actually impressed with the Big Sexy....although I don't like the name. LOL!  Granted it's one of their most expensive rods.  But even still, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it's a pretty decent worm/jig rod.

fishing user avatarShimano_1 reply :

I agree with the above.  While most guys on here are turned off by the googan association...a lot of younger people are probably saving their lunch money to buy favorite because of the googans.  I dont get the hate either. I'm not a fan of their YouTube content but I respect what theyve accomplished at such an early age. I was chasing my tail and barely surviving at those kids ages. From what I've seen and felt...the reels are probably garbage and kastking would be q much better choice on a budget.  Their rods actually are pretty decent sticks. They're not putting shimano and Loomis out of business anytime soon but theyve filled a niche that has worked for them.

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

I don’t hate them. Before this thread I’ve never even heard of them. Maybe because I don’t watch fishing videos on you tube.

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

No "hate" from me, just disinterest. Complete, all-consuming disinterest.

fishing user avatarjimmyjoe reply :

Favorite exemplifies Chinese business values: unbridled production with zero quality control, and maximum promotion through in-country subordinates, sometimes seen as "sell-outs". Many people really resent that. Others .... meh. Not so much. You pays your dollar, you takes your pick.      jj

I personally love mine but see so much hate on them

I've never fished with any Favorite products...but my 'distaste' comes down to one factor.

Too much 'bling'.

fishing user avatarHappybeerbuzz reply :

While I have never tried any of their products, I also fall in “their marketing tactics are cringy” camp.  However if their products prove to be worthwhile either now or in the future, I would probably get over it like I did with Reaction Innovations.

Have you fished with any other rod brands?

fishing user avatarDirtyeggroll reply :

I have only watched a few videos from some of the guys that have been using them (I think Andrew Flair and 1rod1reel), and I have them break the rods on casts or hooksets a few times.

Never handled a Favorite and never plan to.

fishing user avatarHower08 reply :

I would never buy any of the googan products or favorite brand rods and reels because of legitimate dislike of the "squad" the only one worth your time to listen to is Jacob wheeler and I strongly believe he only backs the products because he likely gets them for free.

Plain and simple they are idiots

fishing user avatarjtharris3 reply :

I’ll take my Carbonlite 2.0 or Mojo Bass rods any day over what they have to offer!

Here, let's slap stars and stripes on a rod made in China.

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

Where do you think all the flags for sale in Walmart were made?

fishing user avatarjbrew73 reply :

Some but I’m sure not all Wal-Mart flags are made by Annin, in the US.

fishing user avatarDwbassin reply :

The guy who runs favorite just seems like a dad who tries to be to young and embarrasses his kids when he tries to be “hip”. Like calling reels lit and fire. It’s all marketing towards the younger generation. It works, big time. There is ugliness to it, but kids like fishing not gonna argue that. They practice brand loyalty. I don’t own any rods, never hear good about them and just can’t buy something that looks like that. I’m only 25, but that gimmicky stuff pushes me away. Focus is not on quality. Dobyns, focus on quality, st.croix focus is the same, and even kastking preaches being the best value. Favorite? “Dude this reel/rod looks lit!” Sorry but I despise that word with every fiber of my being

fishing user avatarJediAmoeba reply :

Listen to how that reel sounds.  I have never heard one that bad...and they are using this video it to market it.

Other than that I am sure a lot of their mid range to high end rods are ok but you are still paying for all their flair and marketing.

fishing user avatarbwjay reply :

I haven't fished any Favorite gear, but the amount that they push their brand with various US anglers is off-putting, as others mention, I think the rods look awful with too much "bling" with stupid names like "Big Sexy". I have seen a few snapped in Googan Squad videos. I don't hate the Googan guys (though I really don't care for some of them) and in fact some of them like LFG seem like decent guys who aren't all about hype and putting on a show. There is some skill there but a lot of it is overshadowed by a desire to entertain which heavily discredits them. That attitude, in my mind, gets linked to Favorite, and I think "any brand being pushed this hard by a bunch of guys who are just monkeys in front of a camera is probably not a great brand". Again I like some of the Googan guys despite their antics but I think they are maybe handicapped by their sponsorship from Favorite. I can't imagine how much money Favorite throws at them to slap their logo everywhere and use their rods exclusively. Thank goodness they have the sense not to allow themselves to be forced to use exclusively Favorite reels as well. I wonder if it's a requirement to use Favorite rods if you want to officially be in the Googan Squad.

It really comes down to image, and when you consider the tacky looking rods, rod names, and attitude of the people heavily pushing the gear, it's a bad image IMO. I'm a fairly young guy, in my late 20s... but maybe just outside the target audience. I know I put a premium on reliability, value, and in a lot of cases, understated beauty. I don't want stupid flashy rods... give me a black/gray blank with some nice cork on it. It will pair way better with any reel you want to put on it, too.

So to summarize, as MIbassyaker said... I don't hate Favorite. I just have absolutely zero interest in anything they make. Zip, zilch, nada.

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

I am not in their demographic.  So I am neither targeted or inclined to use their product.  ????

I think it is very fair to say that, almost universally across the generations, the old are very often annoyed by the antics of the young.  They are marketing to a very young demographic and it's very obviously going to annoy or at least be unappealing to older people.

fishing user avatarsmithy97 reply :

I have little patience for the marketing by Favorite and for the Googans in general. If you can buy a Dobyns, Megabass, G. Loomis or St Croix rod, do it every time. These are long time, good standing companies that stand by their products and let the quality speak for itself. These companies don't use gimmicky or cringeworthy tactics to convince you to buy their products. There are other good ones like them, these are just the 4 that I use and can speak personally about.

fishing user avatarGlaucus reply :

Not gonna lie I'd buy a Packers rod but it would just be a collector item I would never actually fish with unless it was actually a good rod from Fenwick, G. Loomis, Okuma, St. Croix, or Daiwa.

fishing user avatarhwright38 reply :

First off, Favorite Reels are pretty much the exact same Chinese reels you can get on Amazon. They're garbage. Most of the Googans even use Shimano Reels. It's funny how when they're doing an overview of the gear they're using, they'll go into excruciating detail over their Googan baits and Favorite Rods, then just brush off the $300-$500 shimano reel as "a 7:1 gear ratio reel," like it's not a big part of their combo.

Their rods I've heard are actually decent. For the money you can get a better rod from Dobyns/Abu/Shimano/etc, so I don't see the point in spending $100 on a Rigged Rod when I can get a Vendetta/SLX/Fury for the same price.

The guys themselves range in personality to from total cringe dude-bros to seemingly nice guys though. I like some of them, but can't stand the yee-haw ones.

fishing user avatarHulkster reply :

i have been watching a lot of great Roland Martin videos (his channel is awesome) and he uses favorite rods lol

The cringe for me comes when they market it as a Christian-based company focused on grass-roots growth.

The reels they sell are garbage. That reel in the video is exactly what the 3 Favorite reels I handled sounded like.

no reason to buy them.

I think releasing such garbage reels and overpricing them was a mistake.  I handled one too and was so put off by it I could never buy a rod from the same company.  If they are willing to put their name on those reels why in the world would I trust the quality/value of the rods.

I'm confused as I've heard of Justin Rackley, when did he get involved with these other fellows?

fishing user avatarBoomstick reply :

I don't hate them, but I've picked up some of their rods at Dick's, hit the tips on the shelf and couldn't feel it. Normally if I ask someone to tap the tip, I would expect to be able to feel it at the handle at that price point, but I couldn't feel it on the Favorite rods until I hit it hard enough for it to stop the handle of the rod moving forward anymore. An Abu Garcia Veritas for $80 is a better rod, and I daresay the Abu Garcia Vengeance at half the price is still a better rod.

They are heavily promoting the Googan squad (I've heard LunkersTV owns half the company), so they have a pretty sweet marketing thing going if you think about it, I just don't think they're very good rods. Maybe they'll serve as starter rods for people just getting into fishing, and that's cool. But you know LakeForkGuy has to be missing his old Dobyns champion rods everytime he picks one of those up...

I used to watch Rackley all the time, and enjoyed his videos a lot. I don’t even remember how it happened. All of a sudden one day he was like “I’m a Googan, now! And my videos suck, now!”

fishing user avatarTheRodFather reply :

Yeah, LFG becoming a part of the googans will hurt his credibility.  It has for me anyway.  He will become more wealthy though I am sure.

The interesting thing is that 1rod somehow knew to stay away back when they were forming.  Good call on his part in my opinion.  He seems to value his credibility, although he didn't need to get with the googans for any monetary reasons, he has the most subscribers of any of the youtubers, by a long shot.  LFG is the only one that is even close with 750K, to 1rods 1million plus subs.

No he doesn't. Jon B is right behind him by only 20k. I don't blame any of them for cashing out when they could. Especially LFG with his brain surgery.

Exactly one of many reasons I don't like to buy rods off the shelves of these places. Customers mistreat them in their "tests" every single day.
