Which reel out of this list? 2025

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

Which reel do you guys recommend out of this list for both performance and money. I have an older quantum Accurist PT right now, i'm looking for a new reel. I fish lefty retrieve. So here's my list:

-Shimano Curado E 200 (E5)

-Wright & McGill Skeet Reese Victory

-Abu Garcia Revo SX

-Quantum Energy PT

I want a solid reel, it will only be used for bass, pickerel and other similar sized fish. I'll be fishing anything from weightless worms to heavier spinner baits, probably using power pro.

fishing user avataradclem reply :

Well the 200E5 is a right hand retrieve reel, Shimano does not make that reel in a left hand retreive.  They do make the 201E7 which is a left hand retrieve, it is a 7.1 retrieve rate.

I would look at the 2010 Revo SX or if you can afford the extra $30 the Revo STX.  Both of these reels are great reels but the STX is really worth the extra $30.

I would really avoid the other 2 you mentioned.

Later, :)

I agree, if you can fork out the extra cash for a STX I would go that route.  If not I would still go with the SX, built like a tank and will last you for years of fishing!

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Although I have more Shimano reels than any others I would agree with what adclem suggested.

The E5 is a slow retrieve which is good for crankbaits.

Of the remaining three, I support the Abu selection.  :)

fishing user avatarDaveT63 reply :

If you want to save some money for the bait monkey, Tackle Warehouse has the 2009 ABU STX in lefty on sale for $119.99, and it should be free shipping.  Tough deal to beat on a great reel.   I paid that for mine used and was happy.  Still am!

fishing user avatarRussBert reply :

Like Dave suggested, the Revo STX-HS lefty is on sale at *** for $120.

That is my recommendation regarding performance and value 8-)

Abu Garcia Revo SX

I paid full price for my '09 STX's, and I'm still happy with them. I haven't tried the Victory reel, but of the other three, I prefer the Revo.

fishing user avatarKYntucky Warmouth reply :

I'd say either the Energy, SX, or Curado (I'd go E7)...I have all three and prefer the Curados...

as for the Victory reel

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

So now it's down to the Shimano Curado E7 or Abu Garcia Revo STX. What do you guys think out of those two? I know there's a huge shimano following here, and I love both companies, but as far as using and knowing about these two models exclusively, i'm lost.

I have a Curado 201E7 and love it... I also have a Revo Winch for cranks which is super smooth & has a sick drag.

Curado is a great reel. Its a workhorse...

That being said when I fill my 6.4 spot it maybe an STX. :)

If you are planning to buy the 2009 Revo STX from TW, remember that it has only magnetic brakes.

doesn't it always come down to that? ;D

i have been insanely happy with my stx's. got three of em and plan on gettin a couple more. I appreciate having the option to adjust centrifugal  breaks without havin to pop a sideplate open. I wish the stx had a slower gear ratio. And I think the Curado is lighter.

...adjust mag breaks without havin to pop a sideplate open.

Pretty much all reels that use magnetic brakes have an external control, while reels with centrifugal brakes require you to open up the palm plate to make adjustments. The Curado's have a simple turn-key method to open the palm plate.

I wish the stx had a slower gear ratio.

You can order a set of gears 6.4 to 1 gears from ABU and drop them right in

fishing user avatarfmoore reply :

Both are great reels. I think at this point what it really comes down to is mag breaks or centrifugal brakes.

I prefer the Revos but you can't go wrong with either.

Something to keep in mind: Revos will cast light baits better than the Curado.

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

I cast with centrifugal brakes on my quantum.

fishing user avatarTBendBassin reply :

shimano! centrifugal brakes are way better than magnetic imo.. i do own the sx and its a good reel but i don't think it cast lighter baits well. i tried to use it for my backup wacky setup and it would not throw a weightless worm very good.

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

I can find the STX for 180 and the curado for 144, both in left hand retrieve, both 2010 models. I won't be getting it until christmas, so i'm looking at my options now.

fishing user avatarNorcalBassin reply :

I don't have a Revo to compare it to, but my Curado is awesome... pleasantly surprised how far I can cast with that thing and it is very smooth. Not sure if the STX is worth the additional $34 you mentioned in the deals you found. Just about everyone seems to like their Curados and STX's, so you'll be happy either way with these two being your finalists.

I have one of the STX-HS reels from TW, and I had a Curado 201E7

The STX is smoother and has a superb drag system. It can cast light baits (1/4oz is a light as I've tried) well, but requires diddling with spool tension and the mag brake. The reel is great with heavy baits too. I have it mounted on an Avid 7' MH/F rod

The Curado E7 is a fine reel as well. The handle ergonomics are fantastic, as is the rest of the reel. Fits my style well. The drag is adequte, but I wonder how long the single drag disc and plastic drag washer will last? What I really liked about the E7 was it's ability to cast any baits with no fussing. I set two brake shoes out, and set the spool tension to just take up any side to side slack in the spool. I could cast senko's or 3/4oz spinnerbaits and everything in between and I never messed with the reel settings. The factory spool bearings were greased. I flushed 'em out and lubed with a light bearing oil. It made a significant difference. The Curado is "set it and forget it" reel. Mine was mounted on a Crucial 6'6" MH/F rod.

Hope that helps. For a $120 you can't beat the '09 STX. Get 'em while they're cheap.

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

So the STX is a higher quality reel than the curado? I never thought i'd hear that! What's the major differences in quality?

fishing user avatarscrutch reply :

I have three STX's and I love them. I read a few days ago that some guys were having some quality issues with some curados. I searched for the thread and came up empty.

I can't remember the details but I know David P. was chiming in on them. Maybe he can help. I'll shoot him a pm for you. I think he can provide the answers.

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

Is there a reel in the 150 price range that's better than the curado?

fishing user avatarbilgerat reply :

I can tell you the STX is built like a tank.

Same old decision in the end...

Ford or Chevy

Coke or Pepsi

Baked or fried

fishing user avatarDavid P reply :

Definitely don't get a slow retrieve reel like a E5 for weightless plastics and such. Look for a high speed reel. Revo SX has high speed or STX, both solid reels. I've had awful experiences with the Curado E7s so I wouldn't recommend those.

STXs I had 12 of them at one point and was very satisfied with them, built solid, and never had an issue.

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

In my box (which i'm looking at now) i have the following:

-Plastics, from worms to toads, and a topwater basspro mouse

-Normal Size jitterbugs

-Slightly heavy spinners

-Light to heavy spinner baits

-A few buzzbaits, small to 4 inch long

-rapalas, cranks and spooks

-i sometimes throw worms, for sunnies :-)

So, my accurist i can cast my whole box plus some lighter stuff. I only freespool when flipping, other than that i have the minimum amount of weights on and a slightly light spool tension. So, is the curado going to be able to handle that? I know shimano is top quality.

You'll be fine casting lighter baits with an E7, the higher retrieve speed really helps. BUT, I've had awful experiences lately with the quality of Shimano. I prefer the STX's and can cast just as well if not better with them. If price is the main thing though, I'd still take the E7 over an SX and cross my fingers that I don't have problems with it. But if you can get an STX even an 09, I'd go that route.

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

How is shimano at making things right if i get a faulty reel?

fishing user avatarJDK. reply :

out of your list revo sx for sure of the old stx for 119 at TW which would by far be the best bang for the money

If you can hold out I would, I bought my STX for 99 bucks last year two days before Christmas at Gander Mountain.

I highlighted the two that would be decent choices.  The W&M is unproven, and I haven't even seen one.  The Quantum, ehhh....  Quantum guys love them, but I've seen my fair share of early deaths.

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

What do you guys think of this as a set-up?

-Shimano Curado 201E7

-St. Croix 6'6" Medium casting rod 1 piece

-Power pro braid in #50

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

Is there a BPS or cabelas reel that's better (literally) than the curado and less money?

Which model St Croix you going with?  Triumph?  Mojo?  Premier?  Avid?  I personally would recommend the Avid if you can swing it.  There are a couple in the flea market right now for sale.

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

oops! haha i included everything but the name. yes, the triumph.

The triumph isn't a bad rod for the money, you should be happy with it.

The Cabelas Prodigy (Daiwa reel) is a nice reel and cheaper than the Curado. Normally they are $100 but you can catch them on sale for $70 and they come in a lefty model. I haven't tried anything lighter than a 1/4 oz crank but they work well with those.

fishing user avatarGrewia reply :

From the reels listed in the OP, I'd have to go with the Revo. Are any of the other reels mag?
