fishing user avatarfish2355 reply :

So I am starting a new rod locker with higher end setups. I want to know what yalls thoughts were on these setups. I will be starting to compete in tournaments more and more often. I am pretty set on Dobyns rods and Lews reels.

Rods

Crankbait: Dobyns 6’8” med moderate-fast (DC 684CB)

Deep Crankbait: Dobyns 8’ med/heavy mod-fast (DC 805CB)

Frogging: Dobyns 7’3” Med/Heavy Ex-fast (DC 735C)

Senko Rod: Lews Mach spd stick 6’8” medium moderate-fast

Pitching and Flipping: Dobyns Champion Extreme 7’6” med/heavy flip fast action (DX 795FLIP)

Punching: Dobyns Champion 8’0” Heavy Flip Action Fast Action (805flippunch)

?Topwater:6’6” extra fast medium heavy??

?Drop Shot:

?Spinnerbait/chatterbait: M.H. fast 6’6”-7’

Reels

Crankbait: Lews BB1 Pro 6.4:1 (PRS1HZ)

Deep Crankbait: Lews BB1 5.1:1 (BB1)

Frogging:Lews Superduty G 7.5:1 (SDG1SH)

Senko: Lews Mach speed spool 7.5:1 (MS1SH)

Pitching and Flipping: Lews BB1 Pro 7.1:1 (PRS1SHZ)

Punching:Lews BB1 7.1:1 (BB1SHZ)

Topwater:Rowland likes the Lew’s Tournament Lite Speed Spool casting reel with a 7.1:1 gear ratio.

?Drop Shot:

?Spinnerbait/chatterbait:

I like to have a variety of setups for specific techniques. Would yall add anymore techniques to this list current list?

Thanks for the quick response!! Ill look at some heavy action rods for my frog rod. Why do you choose a MH F for senkos? Ive never heard of the MOJO rig. I did forget my Carolina rig :P

And just curious, what is the Bait Monkey?...

A faster tip and slightly heavier rod helps hook penetration when using senkos, in my experience. The hard part is finding that balance of light enough to still cast them well, but heavy enough to dig that hook in, and drag them through cover.

Deep crank I use a 765cb glass and its a beast. Unless you want to run 6xd/10xd. I have a DX703sf on the way, ill update when I get it. You're missing out if you don't have a lews tournament pro somewhere in that list as well.  Superduty should be your punching reel.

I chose the 805 CB for my deep crank because the extra length and a mod fast tip rather than the fast. What gear ratio would you recommend for the Superduty? I wanted the BB1 for the lower gear ratio. I was worried with higher ratio that I would strip the gears. (I’ve stripped gears with big bass in thick stuff before with high gear ratio reel) Would the Superduty be alright with a 8.3:1 to winch out bass? I loudly like that flip switch possibly when punching. I really want a lees tournament pro. Not sure where to fit it in yet. Probably replace for the Senko rod or maybe for my spinnerbait reel.

Its sitting on my 735c right now my go to rod for most of the fishing I do.  The superduty is designed for big baits and heavy cover situations no issues in heavy slop. The bb1 pro sits on my 765cb glass but I have the older model with the multi-stop anti reverse. IF you can find one I highly suggest it. The addition of the magnetic brakes allowed me to really fine tune my casts when bombing into wind. I usually run 50/50 braid to fluor so in a pinch I can always retie lighter or heavier leaders. On the heavy slop its straight braid.

Alright. I’ll do the Superduty reel for my 735c. I will have it on my frog rod and punching rod. The BB1 older model only comes in 5.1:1 for multi stop. I was going to use it for my deep crank but Sam recommends a 6:1 for deep crank. Idk what reel for that yet. I like the slow ratio for deep. Doesn’t tire me out as fast at the end of a long day.

My 735 gets everything bottom contact except for skipping. My 684 Sierra is the skipper

I think for any of my bottom contact rods I want to choose from the  the champion extreme rod series. I feel they are much more sensitive. I have not done much skipping as of now. I need to practice that after ice off.

fishing user avatarJackKlassen reply :

Even though I'm not a Lews guy I can vouch for the Tournament Lite. Smooth, casts a mile and surprisingly durable for a non-aluminum framed reel. I use mine for spooks/buzzbaits with 30 lb. 832 and couldn't be happier. Only thing I don't like about it is the handle is only 85 mm. so you might want to replace it with a longer one.

Guys, we have to introduce this young man to the Bait Monkey.

The bait monkey is a vicious, little guy that likes to attack us when we walk into anywhere that sells fishing supplies. Walk in to buy hooks, come out with a new rod, reel, a whole new tackle box, 4 packages of every color of Senkos, a handful of jigs and some more soft plastics you’ve been “needing” along with a few more hard baits that were “too good to pass up”... then you forget the hooks you originally walked in for and the horrific cycle begins.

If he is buying all of this stuff, he knows him.  He just doesn't know his name.

HAha. I love that guy!! It’s so true. Thought it was just me. Now i can explain to other people who’s a using up all my money. My gear just kept multiplying like mice. I even tried to separate them, but then they multiplied even faster!! Haha. I love that little monkey. Keeps me broke but very happy. :D

The BPS Spring sale is the bait monkey's best friend, also my best friend, and my wallet's worst enemy :annoyed1:

For a dedicated spinner/chatterbait rod, I would look into MH/Mod-fast rods (although mh/f works well for me for that purpose too).  St. Croix lists MH/MF as a dedicated rod for that purpose.  Makes sense to me.

yeah, the BPS Spring sale would be more of a challenge for me, however, I live in Utah and we don't have any Bass Pro Shops. :(

The Bait Monkey told me to tell you that you can buy a lot of stuff online at the BPS website...like 5 dollar red eye shads and kvd squarebills...I bought too many already....but I'll lose them eventually and need them eventually...said the bait monkey.

Obviously the environment in which you fish makes a difference in various set ups.  80% of my bass come from thick grass beds so my plastics are fished on 7' MH fast tip rods.

That is very true. It all depends on the environment. However I am looking to fish tournaments and travel when I can for them. I will cover lots of different places and terrain. I just want kinda a general good all around system I start me off.

I've placed one order from them (just started fishing last year) and will be placing another.
