If you could only bring/use one rod and reel what would it be? what is the most universal set up for you? Gear Ratio; Rod Strength: Rod Action
7 ft MH fast (brand of choice)
6.4:1 reel (brand of choice)
MH/F casting rod and a 6.4 or higher baitcaster...
6'6" Medium Heavy Lightning Rod.. Lew's Tournament MB 7.5:1 lined w/12# Fluorocarbon
Shimano Crucial CRC-X610MH
Length: 6' 10"
Lure Weight: 3/8-3/4
Action: Medium Heavy Extra Fast
Shimano Calcutta CT100A
Gear Ratio: 5.8:1
Quantum Smoke rod 7', Medium power / Fast action, 1/4-3/4 lure rating 3.4oz
Shimano Core 50MG7 7:1 ratio 5.5oz
Power Pro Super8Slick 20#
The rod has a very wide range going below 1/4 quite well (1/8) and handling 3/4 rated lipless cranks that actually weigh a bit more.
The reel can also handle any lure in the rods range as well.

There ya have it!
Although i would have a 7.1 reel lol
My specific rod/reel would be my x7 extreme mission paired up with steez 103hla w/sv 105spool and 7.1 gear upgrade. It would handle my favorite techniques plus it's my most expensive combo, lol.
I only have 1 rod & reel in my hands at a time.
7' MH/F and a 6 something reel
Could I...

Fish Eagle II 6' Med. Fast, Cabela's Prodigy B/C 6:2:1 26 inches retrieval, 12 lb. Cajun Red Cast. Bring it on, son.
Old school basser...
Rod is no problem, the problem is choosing from out of all the reely very extra kool reels I own which one I like the most ......
As much as i love my baitcasters....id have to pick a med action 6'6" spinning rod with a 30 size reel 3 spools one with braid 30lb one with 4lb yo zuri and 6lb yo zuri rod would be able to throw 1/4 oz up to 3/4 live bait, lures.<<<<<this would be a survival scenario....
7'1" MH/F I like Duckett White Ice
6.3.1 Baitcaster I like the Daiwa Tatula Type-R

Nope. And I can't either.
I have to agree with the above, a baitcasting setup with a 7' Medium-Heavy fast action with a 6.3-1 reel. Would make for a great combo as long as you know how to use it.
Champion 734
Chronarch D7
40lb braid
I'd get one of them 8' long spinning rods as big around as fence post, with a huge reel, spool it up with some rope, and use a bobber the size of a volley ball................that's what I see all the people who only have one rod using at the state park when I launch the boat, so it must be the answer to this age old problem that has cursed man since the dawn of time (circa 1976 in case your wondering) . BTW is it all right if I sit on a lawn mower while I use this single rod of wonderment ?

Lol so true.

Am I shore bound or do I have a boat in this scenario?

Funny story is that I was one of those guys, but I didn't have a 8' long spinning rod.
I was once like that not many years ago and thought you people with 20+ rods were crazy. Fast forward about 6 years and I'm one of you crazy guys. I use to be a saltwater fisherman and my rod I owned at the time was a rod not ideal for bass fishing. I use to think freshwater fishermen were wimps and how hard could it be, a land locked body of water. Boy was I wrong! I didn't realize how much bass fishing was a real sport with challenge and once I learned, I caught bass consistently.
I've been trying to get my brother in law into fishing, he likes it (he's one of these people)..but he gets discouraged when I catch fish left and right. My goal in 2015 is to help him catch consistently. I've set him up with a nice spinning combo (Airrus rod with a Shimano Symetre) after his setup blew up on him.
I have so many, there is no reason for me to answer this question.

If I could only have one rod and reel for bass fishing, it would be the very best 7' MHF rod I could afford, plus a 6.4-7:1 reel... something from the Daiwa Tatula or Lew's Tournament Pro on up.
Tight lines,
Bob
Probably a 6'-6" MH casting rod with a fast bc reel. That extra speed is nice when you need it.
7'6" ML with a 5.2:1 2500 reel spooled with 10lb braid and leader, or a 5wt fly rod with floating line will keep me busy freshwater fishing for a long time.
Shimano Chronarch ci4 6:1
St. Croix Avid 7' MH/F
I think Maxximus is right. If it was only one combo, it would have to be a med. spinning combo. Nothing else comes as close to being able to do anything in a pinch.

A problem for a lot of us, I'm sure. I can't even list one favorite rod or favorite reel....another popular monthly question.
You mean like 15 "favorites" and 2 others that I like a lot?
My opinion on this changes from time to time but in general......
G. Loomis MBR783 GLX 6'6" MH Fast with a Shimano Core 101MG. It is the most versatile set up I have.
If I could only have one combo it would be a Dobyns Champion 734 C because it's one of the most versatile rods I have owned and used. I would pair it with a Lew's Tournament Pro with a 7.1:1 gear ratio. I would get the high speed because it would come in handy when you need to pick up slack quickly or cover water quickly. If you need to fish slow you can always focus on what you are doing and slow down your retrieve.

Now that there is a good one.

My IP79 and Destruction X4 combo. Pretty much throws anything I care about throwing.
Original poster said if you could only have one combo right? I guess that makes the prepper in me come out. High dollar and fancy bling just seems to have to fade away and your pick would have to be something that can do everything at least in a pinch. Something that will last or can be easily fixed. Something that can do more than just throw hvy jigs or flip. Might have to do more than just bass fishing.
I am a Clearwater yankee.
So I can use almost anything.
But if I lived in thick stemed weeds & huge lily pads ?
120# braid & a BEEFY saltwater spin rig to pull the whole dam plant up. It would probably break the basses jaw. So I would catch & eat a lot.
7 'med spinning rod with my 2500 size Stella attached. Ten pound braid with a fluro leader. Can use this everywhere and have and it catches
if i'm just bass fishing it'd be a 6.3:1 curado& my powell endurance 714.if i'm going after multiple species(bass,cats,panfish,trout) it would be a 2500 size spinning reel(getting a new one today&cant wait!)&my powell endurance 6103.
Shimano curado 301e on a Phenix 682c.

That's an awful lot of reel on that little rod.
Length: 6' 9"
Power: Medium Heavy
Action: Fast
Lure Wgt: 1/4-1oz
Line Wgt: 10-20lb
Gear Ratio: 6.2:1

I'd pick up a new hobby, fishing would not be enjoyable enough to me to continue with it if I was only allowed to have 1 rod and reel.

Wow, what do you that combo for?
For sake of the question. It would be a 7' m/f spinning rod and a 2500 sized reel. I used this combo for a long time and landed all types of fish. Then I got bit by the bug and have invested my money in higher dollar equipment. Now I couldn't even think about only owning one.
