It had been awhile since I purchased a new reel until a few weeks ago when I picked up a Chronarch Ci4 6.4 gear ration at BPS. My previous reels date back to Curado 200e and Revo Premier Gen 2 models. So that's like 2 or 3 years of using those(pretty good for me).
Now when I bought the Chronarch the kid at BPS working the reel desk talked me out of the Core, "its out dated next to the Ci4." I know, you shouldn't listen to the kid sat BPS, but heck I thought if this guy is talking down a more expensive reel infavor of something cheaper why should I argue?
So two weeks later after reading through forum after forum post and trying to figure out specs(I'll admit I'm a bit lost). I still want a Core 50mg7...the 100 is tempting as well. Is anyone else still buying these? Am I wrong to disagree with the kid at BPS and pick a couple of these up?
I like the 50, just because of the size. Otherwise, I prefer the CI4+ over the Core; though I may be in the minority.
I just traded my Ci4 for a Core. No regrets here. The 50 series is so comfortable.
The Core 50mg is my favorite reel.
I have 101 MG and love it. It casts forever. I can almost empty the spool with 12lb line. One of the best things is that it hardly ever backlashes on me. I cast a weightless senko with one break on a country mile. The only down side, in order improve weight on this model shimano reduced the bearing count. The reel still is smooth but at the price it could be smother. This is not to say it is not a great reel, it is my favorite. One thing gear does for me, is it increases my fishing fun and the core paired with a g loomis 803c does it perfectly.
I am hoping there is a Core 51 mg in my future....
Another fan here that prefers the core over the ci4. Its so light and palms so well...
The Core is a Chronarch, Shimano changed the names to differentiate their magnesium versions from the regular ones, let´s also remember that the Ci4 is composite, I have nothing against composite reels other than they are composite.
Having to choose between a Core and a composite Chronarch I would chose the Core without thinking too much.
The core 50mg7 and 100mg7 are great reels. They seem to be more popular than the 6:2.1 core. I haven't fished the 100mg7 but among the guys I know that use them say they fish like a lighter weight Chronarch D7. I have used the 50mg7 for 2 years. There isn't anything I dislike about the reel. The cast control cap adjustment is better than the Chronarch 50e and Curado 50e. I feel the reel is plenty smooth and casts well for commonly used bass lures. Still one of the lightest reels on the market today given its age. Sure Shimano is revamping their breaking system, but my super tuned core casts as well as I need it to. I purchased mine for around $280 NIB. I would not hesitate to buy another for fishing weightless plastics, jigs, texas rigs, and other bottom contact apps.
I know that I love my 51Mg7.
Fished both today. 50mg7 is a great reel for sure the size and weight paired with a very light rod is awesome in hand. If the size and weight are important to you then yes the 50 size would be the way to go. If smoothness and great casting (better than the core50 IMU) along with easier brake adjustment and the extra ease of x-ship then stay with CI4.
Last week the 50MG7 was $270 but sold out it pops up about couple days a month at the reduced price. If you wait and get the deal throw some abec7 bearings in it and it shines.
Right now you can get the Core100 or Chro CI4 for $220 at Gander- code JULY4.

Shimano Core is my favorite casting reel.

Having both...this is a tough one. I like that the Ci4+ has X ship and their new SVS infinity braking system with the external adjustment. However the core is more refined to me. It just does what a great reel should do without getting into all these new technology.
My next reel will be a Metanium. From what my friends tell me it's smoother than a Core and has all the new goodies. It's a good time to be buying Shimano reels. They have brought out great products after the E and G series debacle.

Huh?
I don't know anyone that is/ was dissatisfied with the E Series.
I have a Citica G, excuse me but is an excellent reel, much more superior to the venerable B series Curado and with characteristics you only found in the Chronarch series and those didn´t include HEG. The problem was that Shimano raised the bar with the D and E series and the G series wasn´t what everybody assumed it would be.
Graphite sideplates ? the B series had graphite sideplates
Graphite drag star ? the B series had graphite drag star
The B series didn´t have HEG
The B series weighted 8.6 oz
The B series didn´t have Super Free system until several years into production when the SF version was made.
I think he is referring to the re-release of the 50/200 E in the chronarch line.On 7/6/2014 at 2:44 AM, roadwarrior said:Huh?

Yea I don't think folks had issues with the Curado E.... Maybe the change of name and paint maybe was railed on pretty good... Still great reels whatever they call them.

What I meant is they painted the Curado E white and names it the Chronarch and cheapened the Curado into the G. We all know th G series is watered down and the Chronarch E is basically a $200 Curado E. That's what I meant. I love the E series though. I won't sell my 50 series.
Never sell a 50/51. You will regret it.
Thanks for all the input.
I grabbed a core 50 Mg7 and a Alderbaran BFS from Japan last week. They both got here these week. The Alderbaran is a 2013 model and the Core certainly doesn't look dated next to it.
Sadly I can't get out on the water until Thursday.
I think I'm in the minority here, but I absolutely love the new chronarch's over the the core. The casting of the new chronarch gives such a nice whir, that it almost sounds like a DC reel, the lines of the reel are much sleeker, and not so rounded. Casting wise, the core is great, but I think the Chronarch is even better with the new braking system.
I know I don't own the 50/51 that everyone loves.. am I missing something because I have the 100MGFV?
I own a Ci4 Chronarch. The Core 50 MG7 feels completely different in hand but that's about all I can tell you. I can't wait to fish them side by side, but even after that if I did a review I'd probably do both reels and injustice.
The current 50 size lp is already an all time great imo. The 100 size is considered an all time great in Japan.

Which is why I'd be hesitant to pit it against the new Chronarch Ci4. The Ci4 just doesn't have the years of proven quality. It's probably a fantastic reel and I love mine, but the core has what 5 years on it?

Why do you feel the need to pit them against each other? Just own them all and be happy lol. I would hope that the newer reel with the latest technology from a manufacturer would perform better than the design its replacing.

I'm happy as all heck! Is the Ci4 Chronarch an actual official replacement for the Core 50 MG7?
No, it replaces the chronarch d. There's no replacement for the core 50. Hopefully it will be around for at least another year before they update it.On 7/8/2014 at 12:55 AM, pk said:I'm happy as all heck! Is the Ci4 Chronarch an actual official replacement for the Core 50 MG7?

When you guys say "100", you really mean "101", right?
Can't be that many southpaws on the forum.

But it does have decades of Japanese proven quality backing it up with the SHIMANO name on it

My 100Mg7 is a right hand retrieve reel.

Hootie, do you cast with your right-arm or left arm?
If you're right-handed, do you pass your rod to your left hand after every cast?
I'm right-handed, and for years I fished with reels with a right-side crank,
but offshore fishing caused me to switch. With a left-side crank, the power arm of a right-handed angler is
always available for 'casting', 'hook-setting' & 'pumping big fish' to the boat (the left hand just takes up slack line).

Exactly, otherwise you'll be playing switch-hands all day
Roger
Been playing switch hands for sixty years, not likely to change at this late date. It feels perfectly natural to me.

I haven't used the CI4+ yet, but absolutely LOVE my Core 51MG7. I've got a Steez I would gladly trade for another Core 51.

My fav feature of the Core 50 is it's weight. It you fish often and have issues with tendonitis these reels help a lot! Can't imagine going back to the 10-12 oz reel days. Ouch!
I've used the Core 50 MG7 and the Chronarch Ci4 the past two mornings. The Chronarch casts further and reels smoother than the Core.
I love both of my Chronarch Ci4's. I'm hoping that maybe Shimano will revamp the Core this year at iCast!

Nope. I don't think they'll even revamp it, to be honest. They'll probably phase it out and the Metanium will be the new Core. I don't know for sure, but it would make more sense from a business aspect.

No new LPs from shimano at icast. Wouldn't be surprised if the brought over the new conquest from Japan to sell here like the metanium and Antares.
Before I got my METS, the core was my favorite.
i feel like both my Ci4+ are better than any core i have used and i have used quite a few just never was that impressed with them so never pulled the trigger
For me, the light weight of the core is the selling point. I don't think it's as smooth as the Curado E's they replaced for me but probably cast as far. Both cast far enought that a reliable hookset with mono or fluoro gets iffy when bit at the end of a long cast. JMHO
Did some more comparisons with the Core and Chronarch Ci4 last night. Both on the same rods and tried the same lures. Spinnerbaits slow rolling in deep water, the Chronarch has a smoother retrieve when stressed a bit.
But as a top water reel on my Loomis Topwater rod the Core 50mg7 is nice and light. But I like the way the Chronarch Ci4 palms. I've got big hands, the Core 50mg7 almost gets lost in there. So it's really a toss up. I'm leaning towards selling the Core.
I also compared them to a 2013 Metanium. Smoothest cranking on the Metanium. The Ci4 and Metanium both cast further than the Core as well, but not that much further.
My finesse line is out for UPS delivery today so I'll finally get to compare the Alderbaran BFS to the Core 50mg7 this weekend.
I have to agree my Core is not as smooth as some of the other reels I have fished but it's light, gets the job done and feels good in my hand. One thing that did improve the smoothness of the reel was cleaning the pinion gear. I found it had more build up in it than other reels. Maybe it had to much oil in there to begin with.
One day I would like to compare it to the Okuma Helois Air. It may be the next baitmonkey purchase.
