Revo Mgx 2024

fishing user avatarSouth FLA reply :

Bait Monkey is saying buy, buy, buy...what's your take is this in Steez or Core territory or is Abu getting to ambitious.

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

What? No left hand model? That thing is nasty.

fishing user avatarphilsoreel reply :

Yeah, and it only took 27 different Revo models to get there.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Man that thing is sweet! I'll never own one unless I find it for half price maybe but it still looks awesome!

fishing user avatarQuillback reply :

It looks sweet, but I would like to see some unbiased reviews when it comes out.

fishing user avatarjj'sbassinforfun reply :

Price is out of my league. No left hand models. Only HS Gear ratio's.

But what a sweet looking reel!

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

I was seriously thinking bout buying it till I seen it won't be in to late fall and by then I will be over seas so maybe when I return next year. That way they have been on the market kinks worked out possibly cheaper and I will have money for several if I want.

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

My biggest problem with the entire Revo series is their consistency. They're inconsistent from bait to bait in terms of setting the reel, and they're incredibly finicky when it comes to line and rod. I've not been happy at all with any of the reels I've owned from the series and currently own none, thankfully. I'll fish my Chronarch and Core over that any day, particularly if it's anything like the others. I won't hold my breath in anticipation, as I've not had a good product from the Revo series yet.

fishing user avatarQuillback reply :

I like my Premiers, very consistent and easy to use, but some reels work for some folks and not for others. My Shimanos usually stay at home.

fishing user avatarDr. Watson reply :

that's pretty wicked, I like to try it out, hope it's better than the Revo STX. Still like my Shimanos tho

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

My revo sx ain't finicky a bit I have it spooled with vanish 17lb on a veritas set it once when I got it with just a little pressure on the spool that's it and I throw every weight under the sun without an issue and for a mile. I kept reading bout them being finicky but I haven't experienced it yet

fishing user avatarQuillback reply :

The Abu reels are made for the experienced angler who knows how to get the most from a reel. Shimanos are best for beginners who are intimidated by superbly engineered products like Abu reels. :)

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

Exactly !!! I have 2 stx reels, no problems. Been fishing ABU reels for 41 years. I know I am predjudiced, but it is because of my past experience. I have also used Shimano reels and they are great.

Man, thats gotta start something up. Where's the posse at!?

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

I think it's gonna be like every other Abu product out there. There's gonna be the people who(Excuse the colorful language) have a h*rd on for Abu who will praise it and make it seem like Jesus and then your gonna have the Abu haters who are gonna say its poop.

It looks a like a good reel, but also I think they're trying a little too hard.

Agreed. That comment won't sit so well at the BassResource.com.

ummm, I'd hit it.

:D

You know, a couple years ago I decided to "get with the program" and put down my 5500 c3's and splurged on a Revo Toro. I have since purchased 2 STX's. Love 'em. Can't see dropping $350 for another reel, but it sure is purty.

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

I heard rumor posse is re-locating to China.

Too rich for my blood though.

Love it. Regardless of my love for my Shimano reels, and my dislike of your Abu. That might be the funniest thing I've read in years.

fishing user avatarBassn Blvd reply :

How can you NOT give this reel a try? The premier has functioned great after 2-3 years of hard use so I find no reason not to give this one a shot. I have sold almost all my Shimano's (Chronarch 50mgs, and Core) and replaced them with Lew's. Although I have yet to find a reel that cast as far and easy or holds up as well as my Calcutta's.

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

I think we ought to quit criticizing the other guys choice of tackle. If he asks your opinion, give it. If he is just telling you what he likes, get over it.2

fishing user avatarbarroncooper reply :

good looking reel. I think they'll be typical of most of the revo series though. I've had all of the series up to the mgx and they've all felt great out of the box. I just don't think the gear material (duralumin) is up to the task in terms of longevity. The shimano lineup might not be the buttery smoothest reel on the market but I do know they'll perform and feel the way they did 7 yrs from out of the box new. with that being said I hope the mgx is a solid performer. Industry needs competition. competition is what drives innovation and this can only be a good thing for the end consumer.

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

Did I read that one gear ratio correct 7.9 to 1?

fishing user avatarMr Red Sox reply :

Its an awesome looking reel, but I hate that short handle and those EVA knobs.

yes, but the IPT is still the same as other high speed reels. They have the high 7.9:1 ratio to make up for the smaller amount of line normally taken in (31 inches per turn).

It's designed so the fish will actualy lose weight chasing the lure. It helps prevent heart disease and diabetes in the underwater world.

fishing user avatarphilsoreel reply :

Looks like a nice reel, but I'm not willing to risk $350 on it.

fishing user avatarFat-G reply :

Maybe I'll try it one day.

I am for sure buying a Daiwa T3 Ballistic.

fishing user avatars13john reply :

im thinking both

I'm not a fan of EVA knobs myself. I traded a guy my EVA's off my pat. xt for some of the new lew's paddle looking knobs. They were a perfect fit and I like them much better than the EVA's.

ummm... LOL :D

STX is a great reel; although I like my 201 and 51 better.

and no lefty??? Go away. That and for $30 more you can get the Daiwa Zillion Type R.

fishing user avatarStasher1 reply :

For $350 they could've at least given it a decent finish. From the looks of it, it's sporting the typical Abu paint that scratches if you look at it wrong.

fishing user avatarFat-G reply :

Eh, the more I look the less impressed I am. It has been said before, just get a Type-R.

The Type-R is an awesome reel. Would like to fish the MGX to see how it feels. Its crazy light but then I have a 51E Curado.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Why would you compare this to a Zill Type R? That reel is 40% heavier. Wouldn't you line it up against the Steez or Core? Or maybe something that looks a lot like the JDM PX68......ahem.

fishing user avatarL a r r y reply :

I will be getting one of these. The price is not too bad, look at the Steez and Core, if people can drop that kind of cash on those and even the same price range for a used one, this doesn't seem to bad for me. Now I am waiting to get a sneak peak on on the AG Villain rod

The Villian is tight.

fishing user avatarbilgerat reply :

For those who think Revos are 'finicky', keep this in mind. The 'secret' when setting them up for any particular bait is when setting the cast control knob, it should have enough tension on the spool so that a shake of the rod tip is needed to get the bait to drop - no looser. The cast control knobs are very sensitive on them. Two or three clicks make all of the difference. I have the '09 STX with mag brake only and it was my first baitcaster in over twenty years. I have no trouble with it. Of course I backlash occasionally, always my fault, not the reel.

No LH model nixes this one for me.

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

Bilge, I'm following you 100%, I've just had terrible luck with them, seemingly changing spool tension from one cast to the next. I have cast a crank all day on one, only to have the reel implode on three successive casts- changing nothing and it's back to fishing just fine. I gave them time, a lot of time. Just don't have the faith in them that I do other reels.

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

X2 Thought it was a cool reel to have, but always having to adjust the casting control from one cast to another. My premier never failed me, but others I set it and forget about it.

fishing user avatarIncheon Basser reply :

I have fished and owned all brands of reels. Shimano, Daiwa, Quantum and so on and so on. I used to not like Revos for a silly reason of not owning one and only handling those that belong to friends. Now I have 2 SX and two STX reels. I can't speak for the older versions but the new STX is the most set and forget reel I have. Just set two of the centerfugal breaks, put the mag breaks at 40% and loosen the cast control all the way. Cast as hard as you can and never place your thumb on the spool even after your bait hits the water and no backlas for me. But that's just me. I only own one other reel that can do this and that is my quantum tour pt.

fishing user avatarkikstand454 reply :

hahahaa..... my quantum tour pt is MY most finicky reel. it ticks me off sometimes.

this new revo.... for half the price i can buy a quantum smoke and put 50 bucks worth of carbonmatrix drag in it and have the same freakin reel.

and i can get it left handed.

just saying.

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

I'm sure they will have a left handed version befor long its still on the drawing board not even in production yet I believe. Wasn't it not to long ago like 90% of the BC out there were rh only and the lefty is a newer development. Give it time they will work the bugs out ofer lh models and prolie change something else all the pics iv even seen are CG renderings not actual pictures.

fishing user avatarIncheon Basser reply :

No they have had test models out for months now. I think the first production models rolled out last month.

fishing user avatarhatrix reply :

It looks really amazing and super light weight but at that kinda price range I would never buy it. In the end I think I would rather buy more reels in the $200 range and spend the rest on tackle. My lures are what catch me fish not my reels. All my reels do is look nice and catch the angler :)

Also about the lh retrieve thing why is it bait casters are generally rh retrieve but new spinning reels come lh retrieve by default. That always seemed sorta weird to me.
