Ever Break A Rod -- How? 2024

fishing user avatarThornback reply :

I had a bass fisherman ask me to teach him how to bass fish with shiners. I agreed and said I would furnish everything. Once on the lake and anchored in a good spot I demonstrated how to hook the shiner and I made the cast. I peeled off some slack line and handed the rod to my friend. I told him to keep slack in the line and when he saw the line being pulled off the reel at a steady rate, take up the slack and set the hook like he was trying to break the rod. In a few minutes his line took off and he did exactly as instructed, even broke my rod in half :)

fishing user avatarOntarioFishingGuy reply :

Being an idiot. Pulling line out of the tip when the rod is vertical, high sticking fish and hallway fishing, i have even had a salmon run in between my legs while wading and snap my new 13' float rod. :( this is gonna be a painful thread.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Never while fishing, but have had a couple broken by accident.

Many.....from stupidity mostly.

fishing user avatarcbass12 reply :

Broke one of my dad's old BPS flippin sticks when I was a kid trying to swing a 3-4 pound carp onto the dock at LOZ with braided line. He was pleased about that one. Buddy stepped on one of my BPS Bionic Blades in the back of my truck a few years ago, crunched the blank on one of the ribs in the bed. Didn't realize until the next week when I was crappie fishing with my wife, set the hook and the rod just snapped in two.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

2 in car door last year

2 that I contend were mismanufactured

1 from just plain of use

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Fell face first into a pile of rocks.  Broke my heart, too.  Was my favorite rod at the time...a 7' MF Falcon Expert.  Took a couple weeks for the injuries to heal.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Yes- all on hook sets with braid.

Various brands and all on the first or close to the first trip out.

I think I know what you're referring to here, but you may want to fill in the blanks a little.

As a stand alone statement, it may not be saying what you want it to.

btw - I'm hoping that was not one of his proudest moments, yet he keeps having them.

It makes the point I want....  Don't worry, I took a bunch of pictures with some kids afterwards so it made it ok.

fishing user avatarmjseverson24 reply :

I have broke a few rods, st croix tiumph, shimano convergence, and a fenwick HMX. All of them were broke in the same manner, using braid fishing a jig around wood, feel a "bite" and don't completely reel in the slack before swinging to find out the bite was a log. all of these broke about 18 inches from the tip where the rod starts to shut down into the power section of the rod.  I have since figured out how to correctly set the hook and have not broken a rod since ( about 3 years)...

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

I once broke a Carrot Stix rod.  But not like you would think.  I made a cast at a willow tree that has some low hanging branches near the water and became a little tangled in them.  I twitched and popped the line trying to get it loose until I became a little frustrated.  I then tried to break the line off and of course it came loose, it shot back at me at a speed that was impressive, I could see this bullet weight spinning in the air and heading directly toward me, it was like one of those slow motion effects in the Matrix.  Suddenly before loosing a tooth the bullet weight hit very flush on the rod blank and fell to the ground.  A couple of fish later and snap goes the Carrot Stix.

fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

I did once while fishing. A few years back I was using a Carbonlite I believe. Fishing in the pads at the glades, a very nice bass slammed my bait, I reared back and set the hook. However something changed when I was wrestling the fish out of the pads and my rod snapped. Lost a great fish and rod in the same situation. lol.. Fortunately, the CL was still under warranty, and I picked myself up a new one, no questions asked. I learned my lesson since then and no more rods have been broken. LOL...

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

Not broken but I left a team daiwa t on the deck and as we were leaving...Bump! Flew right off and I was completely unaware.

fishing user avatarAlpha Male reply :

Two last year, one the year before, and one as a kid.  The 2 last year were both under warranty, one was a pinnacle and I was casting a spinnerbait and the top 4" just came off and the other was a Abu Garcia veritas where the guide insert in the tip came out somehow.

If a door or trunk lid does not fully close ? Slam it.

Brain deads do that.

fishing user avataradam32 reply :

I've only had two rods break that I truly felt were due to a manufacturer defect.

The rest were due to my clumsiness and stupidity.

And few in the ceiling fan.

fishing user avatarBlues19 reply :

Got a Vendetta  a year or two ago from Walmart when they were on sale for cheap. First cast with a weightless senko and that sucker snapped. Im gonna blame it on being from Walmart and someone mishandled it. Also horsing a snag. That was a dumb one. That was about 200 feet down the bank after catching my PB at the time.

fishing user avatarcyclops2 reply :

 Wimpies use rod & reel.

Real men use hand lines.

fishing user avatarwnybassman reply :

I have broke two since around 1991.   First was a Team Daiwa flippin' stick that got caught under a rope cleat on a boat.  When I picked it up I heard a slight crunch and setting the hook on the very next fish snapped it in two.   The second one was a 7' medium heavy that a rod locker door came down on.   I did have another one break by my step father.   He wasn't using it, he was resting on it as he was power heaving over the side of the boat while fishing in a heavy chop on Lake Erie.   lol

fishing user avatarEvanT123 reply :

Yes a shimano compre. I had a few cold ones and decided to test its durability and well the rest is history.

fishing user avatarChrisWi reply :

Had a Fenwick Hmx explode in my face on a hookset. Guess I shouldn't be fishing a Texas rig on 6' M

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

Broke only one and it was while fishing, but had nothing to do with fishing really. Was catfishing with my cousin and we were sitting back in some shade. My rod started getting dragged in so I jogged down to get it. I picked it up and hammered back a hookset, not knowing my cousin had ran down to grab it as well. Nailed him across the head and shoulder with the rod and snapped it like a twig. I was mad, but it was too funny to be too upset.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

Oddly enough, I've broken 2 and both were on casts.  I'd obviously damaged the rods previously and didn't realize it.   One was about 6" from the tip and the other was about midway on the rod.  Both were customs and one was a Phenix K2.  I've never seen a blank wall as thin as on the K2.  I will never buy another one for that reason.

fishing user avatarRSM789 reply :

One on a hookset, still landed the fish.

One on a snag about 20 feet up in a tree (don't ask).  Yanked once, broke the rod.  Pulled the line, broke the branch & it fell into the boat.

One on a ceiling fan on a houseboat.

One in a car door.  It broke just the tip & I still wanted to fish, so I snipped the rod (a spinning rod) down to the next guide.  Found that it changed the action of the rod slightly and the slightly shorter length worked well to skip Senko's under docks.  Continued to use ol' no-tip to catch about 30% of my bass last year, all of my other rods are soooooooo embarrassed.

fishing user avatarRobert Riley reply :

Took an old rod outside and smacked it against a tree a few times after I bombed an exam lol

fishing user avatarDaveT63 reply :

2 St Croix Avids. One trying to free myself from a snag, the other in a car door.

fishing user avatarlivetofish28 reply :

Stumbled and fell going from boat to dock and snapped the tip off of two st Croix's an rage and a mojo. Opened the rear compartment of the boat to try and jump the guys next to use and didn't realize the Rod was there St croix rage my Dropshot Rod the week before a tourney I was going to Dropshot in. Didn't go too well lol

Edit-a friend and I decided to see what abuse an ugly stick could really take a couple years back and ran it over with his car multiple times smacked it against a street sign about ten times for good measure and then proceeded to touch the tip to the handle. Cut all the guides off minus the top and bottom one and then went catfishing with it the next day the Rod is still in use as a trophy lol

Tight lines

Andrew

fishing user avatarAngry John reply :

Three for me.

First one was a light spinning I broke being a nucklehead when just starting off. Got a lure stuck in a tree and tried to wip it out like I was using an ugly stick I was used to. First graphite rod gone.

Second was a fenwich small mouth mhf casting rod that I highsticked while trying to land my pb from a yak and she made a last run and it was all tears after that.

Third was done in transit some how and I went to pull it out of its rod glove and six inches of the tip was broken off. That was a lamiglas 702 spinning rod that I really liked. The first rod I broke in two years and I don't even know really how it happened.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I've broken several, most were my fault. I had a All Star flipping stick that blew up on the hookset one of the first times I used it, never seen a rod break in 4 places on a hookset like that. Had a Carrot Stick just fold in half while I was yo-yoing a trap, nothing but the resistance from the bait made it break.

I've broke at least 4 rods swinging fish in. Last summer I cut 2" off the tip of my St. Croix Legend Tournament light flipping rod with my buddies truck door  :cry4:

fishing user avatarBigbassman43 reply :

Broke a couple shutting the rod box on them. Broke one setting the hook, can't remember if I got the fish in or not.

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

I have broken a few over the years. Almost all have been related to clumsiness or lack of attention. Just part of fishing IMO.

fishing user avatarHoosierHawgs reply :

I broke one a few years back boat flipping a fish.. I don't flip fish up anymore, but lip then while they are in the water.

fishing user avatarward131 reply :

I have broken two. One many years ago. I set the hook and the rod snapped just above the reel.  The broken part slid down the line into the water. I reeled it back in with the fish. If I recall correctly it was a little bass. .

The second was this summer. My Ugly Stick handle cracked. Don't know how. The replaced it.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Car doors, not enough slack while pulling on a snag, and tail gates. I think that about covers it.

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

two rods for me.  both times at the ramp pulling the kayak out, both times my fault.

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

Only broke one rod that I can remember. I had a big pike split the boat on me and it ended up snapping the rod in two. Still landed the fish though.

fishing user avatarBruce424 reply :

Yep!!! Car door... brand new rod too didn't even get to use it yet. Then that's the only rod I brought so I had to go back home... awsome : (
