I'm an idiot sometimes 2024

fishing user avatarNeedemp reply :

We went fishing yesterday in the midwest. It was below freezing the first couple hours and a little windy. Needless to say, that probably contributed to my mistake decision.

I caught a bass about 2.5 to 3 pounds on a crankbait. I got the fish in the boat and the front hook was in his mouth and the back hook was in the side of his head. The crank was stretched tight and I knew it was going to be a mess getting it out. I hate when a bass gets hurt like that. So I knew I was going to have to find a way to remove these hooks without hurting the fish anymore. So, with good intentions, I figured I would put the fish back in the water to let him breathe (I don't like to have bass out of the water for long). So without thinking it through, I put the fish in the water with the crank still in his face. Well with one good run (a better run than at any point during the initial fight I might add), she busted the line at the knot. Doh! An idiot moment if I ever had one, but my intentions were good I guess.

How about you guys? Any good stories about stupid things you have done?

I did the same thing with a crankbait one time. I was in the back of the boat while my buddy was running the front of the boat. I threw the crank out and told my buddy to turn around because I thought the crank would be floating. As we keep drifting, I realize that it is a suspending crank that I threw out and it is sinking slowly to the bottom. I felt so stupid. :D

I caught a nice Jack in the surf one morning, happen to have a Boga grip with me so I figured I'd grip it and weigh it.  I forgot to put the loop around my wrist and this 12# Jack makes a jump and my hand lost grip on the Boga.........This guy is swimming around with my Boga, I wonder what ever happened to him.

I made a cast and the fish hit the instant my lure hit the water.  I set the hook without engaging the reel first.  My reel was swallowed by the biggest bird's nest I've ever made.

I couldn't reel the fish in because of the big mess, so I pulled in the fish by hand.  :)

A couple of years ago I rigged up a new SX and Avid, made a couple of test casts, put it down, grabbed my cranking rod, and on the first cast I hooked my new combo and launched it into 20 ft. of water. Butt's over elbows, but I was able to hook it with the end of my cranking rod before it sank to far.

fishing user avatarJason S. reply :

Yeah I've almost lost a couple of rods. Luckily I turned around in time to grab 'em before they sank to the bottom of the lake.

fishing user avatarBuckeye1955 reply :

Ah, I've pulled the toss the jig in the water after tieing it on too. Cut the wrong line too. Had my walkie (black) to talk to the buddies with laying on top of my black soft sided tackle box and flipped it open to get something.... Splash! Had my baitcasting rod with my most $$$ reel on it laying on the deck behind me. Made a cast and watched it sail over my head into the lake. (Did manage to hook it with another cast before it sunk). Had one buddy toss his anchor in without tieing it on. (TWICE). And as a kid in my old man's boat with an old 20HP merc that would start in gear and the return spring on the throttle was broke --- Got up on one knee and gave it a jerk and sailed right over the top of the motor. I'd killed it with the kill switch and with the handle in wide open position when we'd landed. Quite a surpise for the buddy in the front of the boat to turn and find me gone!

I was fishing on my little 3 man bass boat one day, went to cast and hooked one of my new shimano curado reels and shimano crucial casting rod into the pit lake I was fishing. It's sitting somewhere about 40ft deep. I tried trolling it and stuff, never got it. I figure it's some bottom structure now.

fishing user avatarttufishinman reply :

one day i took my buddy out on the lake and we had a good day of fishing. well when i went to load the boat i had the trailer too far in the water so i hooked the winch strap (which is messed up) to the front of the boat and told my buddy to watch the boat as i pulled up a bit. of course he didnt pay attention he was too busy texting and the next thing i know my boat is floating in the middle of the creek channel. i made my buddy jump in and go get my boat and i stayed dry  ;D

fishing user avatarbrushhoggin reply :

my first proper set up, revo s on a falcon cara. drove the boat to the first fishing hole, stood up to fish, realized it had rolled off the deck during the ride into at least 20 ft of water. watched my buddy fish for an hour or so before i had it in me to even start fishing.  :-/ >:( :( :-X :-[

Years ago my Father, brother and I were fishing on the Shenandoah in WV.  We were anchored cross current above a nice rapid section.  My brother made a cast (dad is in middle of boat) and just nicked my dad's ear with a hook, that brought forth a lot **--//--** from my father.  My next cast I took the hat off of his head -- well the s**t hit the fan.  What he didn't realize was that he had dropped the lure on the back cast and the best small mouth of the trip nailed it.  He didn't know whether to continue **--//==-- or boat the fish. :D :-/

fishing user avatarendless reply :

i dont have a real dumb fishing story but i do have a dumb boat story. me and my buddy's nephew and two nieces with their friend was on my boat while we was joy ridding and swimming in a lake. i decided to mess with them so i looked at my buddy nephew while driving and said you ready i threw it in nuetral and we both dove off the boat. to only come to top of water and see my boat heading for land and realizing the girls didnt know how to drive the boat. luckly for me the boat turned from land but the swim almost killed me. my god i was gapsing for air when got to the boat i just climb in it and laid down

Been there.  Done that.  Only the birds nest wasn't quite so awful and I was able to reel the line in over the backlash.

Measured a fish on the board. It was not a keeper. Somehow I threw the board in the water instead of the fish.

fishing user avatarbassnleo reply :

Lets see.......

Cut the wrong end of the line and tossed numerous baits in which promptly sunk.

Tossed several pairs of pliers in.

Lost countless hats and sunglasses cause they weren't where they should have been when I hit the throttle.

The one that hurt the most.....dropped a handheld GPS over the side. Uhh, it didn't float :-/. That one cost me like 200 waypoints.

I'm known for falling off the boat....while it was in the parking lot in full view of a packed restaurant!

fishing user avatarChaz Hickcox reply :

I got stuck on a sunken barge, and had to wait for a yacht to steam by on the intracoastal waterway. Once I was off and I tried to start my main, my crankin' battery died. For some weird reason I had some stereo wire on my boat, which was lucky because I was able to jump my crankin battery from my trolling battery. To do this though, I had to take my back seat out of the slot to get in the aft compartment. The wind was goin nuts and another yacht was coming by so in my haste I forgot to put by seat back in the hole. I was two miles down the river before I thought about it. It was obviously off the boat. I went back to see if it floated, but it didn't and I lost a whole *&^% seat! Talk about an idiot day.

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

I fell off the boat twice (mine and a friends). Lost: 2 pair of prescription glasses ($700), 2 cell phones ($100 insured), 1 spinning rod/reel ($150). That is calendar year 2009.  :-[

The first thing my friend said to me once I was back in his boat after a very near cold water drowning incident was, "Kirby you're going to have to find someone else to fish with tomorrow. I can't take anymore of this."

Spend much time fishing on a boat and you will see some of the dumbest things, and if you're lucky you won't be the one doing them. ::)

fishing user avatarMaineBassMan reply :

I was at the docks just before weigh in at one of our small local tournaments a few years back. I think it was the first or second tournament my father and I had ever fished. I was taking the fish out of the live well and putting them into the tourney bag. We saved the biggest bass for last, and when I pulled him out he shook his head and I dropped him on the back deck. He flopped all over and I chased him like a fumbled football, but to no avail he ended up back in the lake and I think he would of been the lunker fish for the tournament. No one saw this happen so of course none of the other fisherman believed us. The lunker fish was worth around $400 dollars.

This next one wasn't me but it was very comical still. My Father and I took my Grandmother (she was around 65 at the time) fishing. Long story short we were fishing in this cove that had some standing trees in about eight foot of water. We had just seen this huge snapping turtle right under the boat just as my Grandmother made this cast and got stuck in one of the trees. My dad and I were still looking at the snapping turtle in the water, as the boat drifted close enough to the tree, my Grandmother started to reach for the zara spook. She almost had when my father, (unintentionally) hit the trolling motor and with that we heard a loud "CA-SPLASH!!" We turned in time to see her enter the water, she went completely under, but just as fast as she entered the water she resurfaced and managed to re-enter the boat all in one sudden motion. I couldn't believe a woman of her age could move that fast. She said all she could think off was that snapping turtle and that scene in the movie JAWS where the girl is treading water and the shark takes her under, daaa dunt, daaa dunt, da dunt, da dunt, da dunt ;D!

Dropped Grandma in the drink! That's horrible.  I think I'm going to hell for laughing at that!

I gill hooked my first whopper..... I was so excited about catching the fish! Anyhow, I knew I had to cut the hook to remove it and in my excitement, cut the hook, held the fish in my hand and tossed my rod and reel into the abyss of the lake! At least I kept the fish!

Too funny! ;D I did that exact same thing once. I also threaded a trailer on a brand new jig one day then proceded to toss it overboard like I normally do except this time it wasn't even tied on my line yet. ::)

Got irritated one day(over who knows what) and threw my needle nose down on the floor of the boat(boat is aluminum). Well to make a long story short those pliers stuck in the bottom and dubbed as a plug for the rest of the day. Double DOH!

Broke one of my Croix legend tourneys one day.Got a crank stuck in a sunken tree and was using the rod tip to poke and prod and try to free the lure.It was quite windy out and I had my other hand on the TM tiller. A huge gust popped up out of nowhere and the first four inches of my prized rod snapped like a twig as the boat spun around, and I still never got the bait back. By far one of the stupidest things I've ever done, trading a 230.00 dollar rod for a 8.99 crank :-[. I guess we learn the hard way sometimes,(for me it's all the time) and I have a heck of a lot more respect for my equipment now

(If this is a thread about CF's I can go on all day as I have many LOL. Part of fishing I guess)

fishing user avatarbassman31783 reply :

Lost a good pair of sunglasses because I had them on my hat when I took it off to swat away a wasp.

Also sometimes I get a so excited about getting to a new spot that I forget to bring up the trolling motor.  The last time I did that I ruined a pretty nice trolling motor.  Nothing like putting the hammer down only to have your tolling motor bent to H$!! because it hit a stump  >:( ;D

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Trying to save time in a tournament, I tied on a brand new DT-4 on a spinning rig and threw it into the trees on the very first cast.

Also cut the line and threw a Rat-L-Trap overboard.  ;D   ;D   ;D

This is what happens when you back the trailer down but decide to sit in the truck and eat lunch. Yep, the boat floated off the trailer and into the middle of the lake. Private lake so no one was available to give me a ride to get her so I had to swimming.

fishing user avatarangler1 reply :

I was fishing on a bridge leaning on the concrete, I hooked a fish and was reeling it, when I got the fish to the bridge I did not want to put the stress of the fishes weight totally on the rod tip b/c it was a 10 drop to the water. Not thinking I grabbed the line in front of my rod tip to take the weight off the rod so I could pull the rest of the line and fish up by hand. I set my drag loose so I could put the rod on the ground without moving my position and possibly having my line rub against the concrete wall. For some reason after I loosened the drag I let go of the rod.......that I was still holding over the bridge. I ended up landing the fish then had to peel off a ton of line to get my rod back which I did.
